I have the 20 inch Intel iMac at home, and the 13 inch Intel MacBook for the road. When I have both at home, can the the MacBook be connected to the iMac and serve as an extended desktop?

No, sadly not. The mini has only a single display port, so at best a splitter would divide the same signal to two displays - giving you the result you already have. What you would need is an active device such as the Matrox DualHead2Go (http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/), though while this can give an extended desktop, you are still limited to the maximum resolution the mini can handle, which is rather limiting for most.
An alternative would be to look for a compatible USB display adapter, which could give a resolution-independent option, though the speed of the display is likely not to be all that good. Likely sufficient for basic work, but less so for any moving graphics. So far, I'm not aware of any manufacturer who has released a commercial MacOS compatible product of this sort, but there have been a couple of companies who have promised one, and at least one who have released reportedly stable MacOS drivers for its Windows-based device. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mim0EIN/is_2008_June_3/ain25473487 has a little background info on this.

Allow an extended desktop for imac G5 using OS X 10.3

I got a new display for Christmas that I connected to my imac G5 using a mini VGA, which i intend to use as an extended desktop. I went to System preferences and they said if I don't have an extended desktop option, that means my computer can only display a mirror image on the new monitor.
Is there anyway I can modify my imac to treat the new display as an extended desktop instead of just mirroring the image?

Extended desktop for T61 with GM965?

I want to extend my desktop to a 1440x900 lcd screen. Is this possible with the current GM965 intel driver? I've looked around for some xorg.conf's for inspiration but none until now seems to work.
I've tried xrandr, but it says that screen size is restricted to 1280 x 1280.

I would imagine that the resolution restriction is caused by your hardware, not the driver. My Thinkpad T41 runs at 1400x1050, and Arch Linux recognized my maximum resolution out of the box. I'm not familiar with the T60 line, and it could be the driver, but maybe you should find out what your hardware is capable of first.

Extended desktop for airplay

I've got a 2013 MBA w/ Mount. Lion.
I would like to mirror my second (or third) desktop on TV by airplay, while working on a separate desktop on the computer screen.
Is this possible? (it looks like no)
If yes, how?
If not, is there any software which can do this? Also are there any rumors that Apple is working on this.
It's such a crucial function (extended deskop) that I've never thought it is not possible in Apple computers.

Is MacBook Pro really a replacement for my Mac Pro

I've had a Mac Pro for the past six years but it's recently started playing up and seems to need a new graphics cards.
But I think it's getting to the point where this beast of a computer that is still very powerful, fast and reliable up till now, needs replacing.
All my peers are saying that I should use a MacBookPro as a replacement since I do work outside part of the time and then I've only got one computer to worry about and no need to keep transferring information.
But I'm not sure about just having a laptop. At the moment it's what I'm relying on while the MacPro is being looked at, but already it's got 3 things plugged into it, an external 1TB hard drive because its internal HD at 160gb is too small, a USB for a laser printer and an amplifier to play my music through proper speakers.
Then I'm being told I should hook up the laptop to a 20+ inch monitor while working in my studio.
Can a little computer like this cope with all those peripherals and power demands, plus others like iphone/ipad charging/syncing, plus other bits and pieces from time to time?
I read that my MacPro has a 900W power supply, so it can easily handle all those peripherals of course but can a little laptop cope, and most importantly over a long period, for years. There's no point me investing in a laptop that could easily cost as much as a new iMac if it's going to collapse under the strain after a couple of years when my MacPro has had 6 good years of solid use.
Any advice, experiences out there of the same scenario as me?

A MacBookPro is not a substitute for a workstation like a Mac Pro.
Depending on your usage, it may well be enough for you, but when simply comparing raw power, the MacPro will eat the laptop's lunch.
Tha said, I have have 4 things plugged into mine, including a 24" monitor, two HDs external speakers and it's used for charging iPads and iPhones and it deals with that effortlessly.
The key question is: what do you use your Mac for? Video? Graphics? Text? Development? That'll decide which Mac to get.

Desktop for Mac OS 10.5

I have the new Leopard Mac OS 10.5 and was wondering if 4.2.1 Rev D for Mac will work. This is the latest version that is available for Mac OS 10.4, can someone help?

Yes, but. The Palm Desktop for the Mac doesn't support Notes in the Palm Contacts. So if, like me, you've got years of data in the Notes associated with contacts, you have a surprise: The Notes are stored as Memos on the Mac. But they don't sync back to the Palm device, so you must make changes on the Palm device only. The Mac's Palm Desktop does support the ability to "attach" - i.e., associate - many additional items to a contact. These include memos, todos, etc. But these, too, lose their association when synced back to the Palm device. For example, if you have cleverly set up an agenda in a memo, and a meeting scheduled in the calendar, and have those associated with a contact, you'll have to remember those associations when you get to the meeting.

I appreciate that this might make the Palm Desktop on the Mac more useful. But if the new capabilities can't be used on the device, ... well, I don't get it. What were they thinking?

Airplay display issues: "extend desktop" not working properly. Secondary display continues to mirror.

Whenever I turn my airplay display on and set it to "extend desktop," my secondary display (TV) continues mirroring my mac book pro (hereinafter MBP). It doesn't fully mirror my MBP, but my secondary display registers every time I switch between my desktop 1 and my full screen apps. Moreover, When I do switch to a fullscreen app on my MBP, I get a blank (blue-ish) screen on my TV.
Any solutions!?!
Additionally, "extended desktop" for my Airplay display worked properly when Mavericks was first released.

Try this:
Click on the Apple TV Icon on the top toolbar
Then, select "Mirror Built in Display" instead of extend desktop
In the same menu under "Match Desktop size to:" select "Apple TV" (or keep it on "built in display if that works"
This solved a similar problem for me.

Video switch and extended desktop

Is it possible to use a video switch for my G4 and G5 with the display it controls being the only monitor for the G4 and the extended desktop for the G5?

There is really no dependencie on whether the image being sent through the switch is the primary desktop or the extended desktop. The switch will have no awareness of this. What's going to matter is if you find a video switch compatible with your interfaces and monitor. Are they DVI?

Portege m700 Tablet Extended Desktop Problem

I've looked all over and can't find a good answer to this, so I figured I'd better check with the source! I have a Toshiba Portege m700 tablet PC, which has an LCD monitor connected using the digital cable.
I have the external monitor set as my primary, with the notebook monitor set as the secondary, providing extra desktop real estate to the right of the first monitor.
The problem is that when I use the touchscreen, the mouse controls are only active on the primary monitor (the external one). What I'd like to do is have the external monitor be primary, the notebook monitor be secondary, and be able to drag items to the notebook and use ink, or onenote, or other touchscreen apps on there. I want the touchscreen to control ONLY the secondary (notebook) monitor. Is this possible?
It seems like there should be some way to just instruct the computer to map the touchscreen to the secondary monitor instead of always just mapping to the primary.
However, if there is not, what I did experiment with is having the notebook as primary and the external as secondary, and then using some sort of multimonitor software to manage the taskbar and such to create the illusion of the external monitor being primary. The problem here is that while the notebook is 1280 x 800 resolution, the external monitor is capable of 1280 x 1024, but when set as secondary will go no higher than 1280 x 800. Is there a way to force the external monitor to run in 1280 x 1024 if I'm using it as the secondary?
Is this something for which I need an updated graphics driver? I tried to get a newer version of the Intel GMA, but it actually removed all extended desktop options for me, so I rolled it back. The version it's running is 6.14.10.4837.
Thank you in advance for anyone pointing me to any driver updates, configuration directions, or external software that can effectively manage all these options of extended desktop, screen resolution, and what monitor is assigned to touchscreen control!

I've just tested the "Extended Desktop for Tablet PC" powertoy, and that doesn't solve this problem. With the tablet set as the secondary monitor, when I move the window onto that screen, it just recurses the image over itself, which isn't really useful.
No one has any other ideas about this?

Setting Up Extended Desktop

I am trying to set up an extended desktop for my iMac. The operating system on it is 10.6.8 and I am trying to set it up so that the extended desktop utilizes my Macbook Pro system 10.7.5. I have the thunderbolt cable and have connected it to both computers and tried the following:
System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement
However, when I go into system preferences there is no option under displays for arrangement. What am I doing wrong or what should I be doing to make this work? Is it even possible? Thank you.

There is no MacBookPro model that I know of that you could use as an extended desktop for your iMac. I don't think any MBP's ever supported use of the MBP as a display for another computer.
Only certain iMac models support(ed) their use as a monitor for another computer connected to it via miniDP. If you have such an iMac, you may be able to use it as an extended desktop for your MacBookPro, but not the other way around.

Dual Monitor (Extended Desktop) Information Requested

I am gathering information regarding the addition of an additional monitor to serve as an extended desktop for my iMac 2GHz Intel Core Duo (purchased in early 2006).
Questions:
1) Is it possible for this 2 1/2 year iMac to have an additional monitor?
2) My iMac has a Mini-DVI port on the back. While looking at other monitors, I have been seeing 15 pin High-Density D-shell (VGA), Video - 24 pin DVI-D, and Video - HDMI interface inputs
3) Which one of those interface types is recommended?
4) Does Apple require a proprietary cable to connect with the above mentioned monitor?

Yes it is possible to have an additional monitor. I would compare the 20" iMac display to DVI quality although I believe HDMI is the highest quality (probably comparable to the 24" iMac displays). You will need a mini-DVI adapter to connect any display (see link below). I would recommend a DVI connection using a monitor the same size as your iMac that can handle the same resolution as your iMac display. If unsure what this resolution is go to system preferences>displays.

You can also read some of the reviews from this mini-DVI adapter as most of them are trying to do what you are doing. You will also need a standard DVI cable (sometimes included with monitor) to connect to the new monitor to this adapter. There is also a mini-DVI to VGA adapter - although I wouldn't recommend this connection because it will be lower quality than your regular display. And a cable that connects DVI to HDMI if you decide to go that route.

Trying to use extended desktop

I typically use my 13" MBP with a 20" LG monitor in extended desktop mode. I would regularly plug in my computer when I got home to do work, and unplug it when i left the next morning. I hadn't used extended desktop for a few days, and the next time I plugged in the monitor, it came up with weird resolution with a different aspect ratio and an off center picture. The option for 1600 x 900 at 60Hz isn't listed in system preferences anymore. Do I have a hardware problem here?
Note: I did switch to a shorter VGA cable to reduce clutter on my desk before this problem occurred, but I can't get extended desktop to work properly with my old cable, so I don't think its a faulty cable.

OK open System Preferences/Displays and click the Colour Tab
Does a Profile appear in the left hand column that matches the name of your external monitor ?
If others appear try selecting one of them and then going back to the first
Uncheck "Show profiles for this display only' then try selecting some alternatives to see if this kicks it into action.
Also, try selecting the display profile then clicking 'Calibrate' and run through the adjustments and see if that brings it right.
If none of those work try /Utilities/Colorsync Utility and click Profile First Aid then Repair.

Installing Photoshop CS4 Extended upgrade on my Mac Pro. query

Hi all I do hope you can help me. I have just purchased ps cs4 extended upgrade for my Mac. On attempting to install the istall program checks my system profile then asks me for the serial number for the new product. all well up to this point, then on the next page it tells me it cannot find an existing product to upgrade from and asks me to insert the serial number of the qualifying product. I have the full version of cs3 standard on my Mac so i insert the number. Ok so far. on the same page it asks me to choose my qualifying product showing cs3 extended in the box. However when I try to insert cs3 standard I find there is nothing to change to only this one option. On the adobe website it clearly shows that I should be able to update from the standard version to extended. Can anyone dvise me. I purchased the upgrade from Apple and I note it is the international version.

Thank you for your Help, just come off the phone to Adobe. I had to put a Challenge code in as it was as you suggest the wrong package only allowing Upg from CS3 Extended. All sorted now thanks to a very patient and helpful Adobe guy. Have since updated and everything seems ok even though I am on Snow Leopard.
