Macbook LCD DESTROYED! What now??

My Macbook attempted to defy gravity this weekend, and now I have a cracked LCD. I know that my AppleCare Protection plan does not cover accident, so I'm left to fend for myself. How much will a replacement screen cost me? Should I attempt to install it myself? How much would it cost to have an Apple technician repair it? Can I buy the replacement screen from Apple, and if so will they install it for me without ridiculous service charges? Am I going to have to send my beloved, injured Macbook away to be repaired??? Please help a grieving Mac-student!!!

when i accidently broke my macbooks lcd I got it fixed from macbookresq.com. I think the cost was $440 and that included 3-way overnighting of a box to ship my macbook to them in and then them shipping it back. Total turn around time was 4 days (the only reason it was that long was because I shipped it to them on a thursday evening, and I would have had it back saturday but the shipping doesn't work on weekends).
While I found places online offering the replacement LCD for cheaper, some of them likely aren't the same LCD that came with it (such as the non-glossy ones), and you really don't save that much. I think I saw an LCD only for maybe $300-$350. Even then I'm not sure if it was the same brand.
While I'm technically inclined, and know I could likely replace the LCD I didn't want to deal with the hassle. First making sure I took apart the laptop properly, installing the new LCD properly etc. Then what do you do if the LCD doesn't work, etc etc. Additionally, if I did it myself, I could just see apple voiding my applecare warranty (i paid for the extended warranty after the G4 iBook logicboard issue 6 months out of warranty) if I sent it in. Sure everything worked fine after I installed it, but they'd make some claim that I broke it when I opened it up etc etc. They're known for trying to void warranties like that.
Anyhow, I just think it is much much much easier to pay up for a professional installation and just not worry about breaking anything or whatever (Additionally the company was cool with me removing my hdd before shipping the laptop to them, so that made me happy). Now my laptop works good as new (well, except for the DVD-RW drive, the discoloration, and the occassional RSD I need to get it serviced for).

But you can...
iPhoto calls them Albums. You create the albums yourself in the File menu. And you name the albums yourself.
And you can move photos from one album to another at will. Or delete them, or whatever.

These troubleshooting steps can help if your iPhone 4S is not recognized by your MacBook Pro:
Plug the device directly into a high-power USB 2.0 port on the computer. If possible, use a USB port on the back of the computer.
Avoid plugging the device into a keyboard, display, or standalone hub. The USB ports on these accessories may be low-power or only offer USB 1.x connections.
If you are using an accessory, remove the accessory and connect the device to the computer using only the Apple 30-pin to USB Cable or Lightning to USB Cable.
If you have access to additional Apple 30-pin to USB Cable or Lightning to USB Cables, try testing with another if the first one doesn't work.
Restart your computer and device. To restart your device:
Hold the power button until "slide to power off" appears. Slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the Sleep/Wake button to turn it back on.
Disconnect all USB devices from your computer, except for your keyboard and mouse. Then reconnect the iOS device. If the issue is resolved, reconnect other USB devices, testing after each connection.

Sounds like something internal was damaged in the fall, probably the disk drive. Take to Apple and ask them to fix it.

Turn off power, and allow your computer to dry completely.

Press the power button down to force a emergency use only hardware shutdown.
Press and hold the Option/alt key on the built in keyboard, boot the machine.
If MacintoshHD appears, select it and click the arrow, then in System Preferences > Startup Disk reset that. Done.
Sometimes a NVRAM reset is required then the above done again.

You might need this if you don't have a recent backup and your problem is software related, Disk Utiltiy can't fix the drive and recommends you backup, erase and install.

MacBook Pro destroying batteries

Ok guys...I have an issue with my MBP. Ive had it for a long time now and it has had a few trips to the apple store to see what the problem was. Im posting this to share with you, my crazy experience that im still not out of. Maybe some of you have had this problem, but whatever info I can get would be helpful.
My problem will be best put into a little timeline.
My MBP was purchased in July of last year (06). It came out of the box working wonderfully and without one single problem..no whine, no screen issues, Nothing. It served me well from the start, and continued to untill about 5 months ago.
The first incident took place in school when my computer was plugged into the AC power connector. Someone unplugged it for a second to connect my plug to a power strip, and "poof" my computer went dead. Out of nowhere.
I didnt really think there was a problem until I pushed the charge indicator on the battery and found out that the battery was fully charged! Through experimenting with it, I found out that the only way my computer stayed on was to be hooked up to the AC power into the wall. This is a problem considering my laptop's main purpose is to be portable.
I scheduled an appointment that week and took it down and got it checked out. The guy was really cool about it and explained that some batteries are just bad, or go bad over time. I was pleased to hear that, and remembered reading something about a battery recall. So he placed a new battery in and like magic, the MBP came on and worked on its own! I was happy that it wasnt my computer, and that it was just a defective battery.
The new battery he gave me worked wonderfully, for about, 3 months. Then, one day, out of nowhere, "poof" , It just died again after being removed from the wall on full charge. Like I said before, It would power on, and work fine while plugged in, and the battery read as fully charged.
I still wasnt too concerned because I saw how easily it was fixed before and just thought, maybe there are a lot of faulty batteries out there.
Took it back to the store 2 weeks ago, and told them of my previous visit for the same issue. He told me that it could be the logic board or the battery. Then, he put a new battery in and it worked again perfectly, so he said it was the battery and not the logic board. Once again, my computer worked and I was satisfied.
One day soon after, my AC power connector was plugged into the magsafe slot on my computer, I was just working on the computer normally, when smoke began to rise from the magsafe connector. I quickly unplugged it and looked at it closer...The wires had actually gotten hot enough to melt the cable almost half way through! so I have this melted magsafe cord now that cannot be used. Luckily, my girlfriend also has a mac and let me share hers for all this time. So I was planning on getting down to the apple store this week...
Then, last night, I was working on my computer while plugged into AC power again. I moved from where I was sitting and bumped the magsafe connector off of its slot on my computer and once again, I hear that awful sound of your hard drive spinning to a halt when your computer completely dies!
Yeah...three times this has happened. Im concerned now and worried.
So basically, Im worried what can be done about this. I dont understand it, Im pretty sure that ALL 3 batteries were not defected. That would be too crazy considering almost everyone else I know that has one has an ok battery. So Is my Macbook Pro destroying the batteries? Did It destroy the magsafe?
Im not sure what to do...Has anyone ever had a magsafe replaced due to the same situation? and if anyone has a clue, what could be causing my computer to kill batteries completely over the course of 3 months?
Let me just clear a few points up so that you understand some things that I have already ruled out...
1. I understand that a magsafe is not meant to be pulled out by the cord and never once removed it like that. I tried to educate myself in the right way to preserve my computer. I read about them breaking because people pull on them hard, but I can assure you that never happened.
2. My computer only does this on batteries that it has for long periods of time. In other words, at any given moment, I can grab my friend's MBP battery and put it in my computer and it will work just fine. So I ruled out that maybe my computer isnt able to recieve the battery power. If it was a problem like that, then why do other batteries work fine?
therefore, it has to be the batteries, but something that happens over a few months use.
3. I understand that batteries eventually die out. But I also know that it takes a while for that to happen normally. Im not one of those people who leave my computer charging all day, or on all day for that matter. My computer use is what I would call very normal and average. Average enough that a brand new battery loses capacity in two weeks. Not to mention, the batteries are fully charged.
4. last thing.....my "defective" batteries wont power any other MBP's either. So its not just my computer being funny about connecting. But maybe that its ruining the batteries.
I dont know what to think. I cant explain it. I love Macs and understand that there are problems that can happen with any technology, but I just dont want to end up spending a complete fortune fixing this thing and Im worried that is the road im headed down.
I realize this post is extremely long. I thank whoever made it this far. Im just trying to include everything so that you completely understand as best as you can.

Lithium ION and lithium polymer batteries have a built-in microprocessor to control the charge rate of the battery. A lithium battery that is overcharged can overheat and catch fire or explode. If the microprocessor determines that the battery is in danger, it can permanently disconnect the battery cells from the outside world. Coupled with the fact that you have had a magsafe connector fail from overheating, I think the charging circuit in your MBP needs to be replaced.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I would like to capture the files as they appear on the MacBook, such as "Events" in iPhoto and the various song categories within iTunes without having to rename them all once saved on the Pro, which is the case with photos when I simply save them to thumb drive and import them to the Pro. Thanks for all your assistance. There is no need for apologies, Migration Assistant did indeed create a second account for the MacBook data. It has just taken me some time to figure out how to access it. I now have all the MB data in one account and the MBP files in another, which suits me fine. In fact, it is an advantage in my case as it keeps the private and business aspects separated.
I will however try the fatcatsoftware to transfer all the iPhoto files to my iMac, where I keep my main photo library. and it will be of help to keep the events, etc in the transfer. As far as iTunes is concerned, I have HomeSharing on all my computers and this has obviated the need to worry about playlists being transferred successfully. However, HomeSharing did not appear to share the iPhone/iPod apps that were stored on the MB and although these have now come across with the new MacBook account on the MBP, I was wondering whether my iPhone and iPod will be recognised by the MBP and sync with it? Will I need to have the MB account open to achieve this or will the MBP recognise and sync with the iPhone/iPod automatically irrespective of which account is open?
Thanks for the tip on deauthorising my iTunes account from the MB before sellng. This I will do and I believe the best way to remove all of my data from the hard drive is to reinstall the MacOSX operating system software. Is this the right approach to securely delete everything?

I need to upgrade my MacBook late 2008, what are my options. I have already upgraded RAM to 4 GB some 4 years ago. Also replaced HDD to 1TB, but ended up with a slower response. I am looking to switch the HDD again to speed up the performance. Any suggestions?

Upgrading from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro. What to expect in HDV?

I have Final Cut Pro 5.1
I do alot of editing in HDV. Although editing HDV on my Powerbook in FCP is possible, it's a little slow and rendering times are a little painful. What kinds of speed/rendering improvements should I see if I purchase one of the new Macbook pros? What are some of the everyday improvements in FCP that you noticed by upgrading?

you are in for such a treat!
i don't have specific numbers for you, but the difference in performance of these machines is substantial
quite apart from cpu's and clock speeds, the MBP's have also got across the board better faster components such as faster beefier gfx gpu's, SATA hard discs etc

Right now the best thing to do is be patient. The last six days many people have been reporting problems with FaceTime. The source of the problems remains unknown.
