Macbook + linksys + p.c. = happiness?

i have a windows vista desktop, a windows xp laptop, an hp printer, and a BEFW11S5 wireless router.
i am looking to buy a macbook, and am wondering if the router can support both internet and printer connection for my mac computer...
one other question, apple customer service said they don't support technical quesitons re: linksys, and linksys customer service said they don't support technical questions re: apple...what's a mac lover who had linksys to do?
i appreciate anything you can tell me.
thanks,
mac_lover_leah

I dont think that the Linksys should have any issues with Mac Operating system ....
You can give it a try ..... & let me know if it works .........

  • Week 27 MacBook Pro 17" - Very happy so far

I finally took the plunge and got a 17" MacBook Pro. I went with 2 GB of memory instead of the stock 1 GB. I also choose the 120 GB 5400 RPM drive and the glossy display over the matte display. So far, I am extremely pleased with this new system.
    * No weird noises can be heard. Occassionally, I'll hear the very light hum of the cooling fan but that is it. Much quieter than my Gateway notebook whose cooling fan was quite loud when it kicked in.
    * The glossy display is very nice to look at and the colors are extremely vibrant. I don't work outside much with my MacBook Pro so the glare will be a non-issue for me.
    * The system does get very warm under heavy load but no worse that the Gateway notebook this is replacing. One evening with XP running inside Parallels, I worked with my MacBook Pro on my bare legs with no discomfort.
    * Windows XP Pro inside Parallels is very fast (faster my Gateway 1.6 GHz Centrino based notebook with 1 GB of RAM). I gave the VM 768 MB of RAM to play with and XP just hums along quite nicely.
    * Battery life appears to be good. I ran on battery one night while running XP inside Parallels and if I had let it run until the battery gave out, my rough guess is that the battery would have lasted 3 hours.
I have only had this for 4 days but so far, I would have to say that it's the best computer I have ever owned.
iMac, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Congratulation thus far and enjoy

  • Happy with Macbook?

I know that, being a support forum, there's bound to be an overwhelming majority of people coming with Macbook problems, thereby scaring many of us potential buyers.
I was just wondering-who here has a problem free Macbook they are fully happy with? All you non-posters speak up here!

Count me among the happy MB buyers. joer1978 sums up my experience exactly.
I puchased the basic model at Amazon, got the $100 rebate, and used that to upgrade the RAM to 1G.
I've had it almost two weeks, been using it everyday, and haven't experienced any problems at all, and especially none of the ones that have been described here and other forums. I did purchase iKlear to keep it clean, which works great, but I haven't seen any discoloration, scratching or flaking. I love the shiny white color.
I get great battery life, especially for such a bright, sharp display. I also get great WiFi reception as compared to my older Dell D800. Outside, in direct sunlight, the MB has a nicer display than the Dell D800.
I've installed BootCamp for the few Windows apps I want to run, and it has also perfomed as well as possible with Windows But, we have Mac MS Office 2004 (which runs fine), so I rarely have a need for Windows.
I would tell potential buyers not to worry so much about what they hear. Like all electronic devices, there are going to be some problems, and that's what these forums are for. So, naturally, you're going to hear more problems looking through here.
Heat hasn't been an issue for me. As an old laptop user, I know all laptops run hot to some degree. I monitored mine for a few days... it was a little on the high side, close to what others reported. But, that's actual CPU temperature and it's still lower than the high end threshold for that chip. As the enclosures get smaller, the heat has to go somewhere. I'll take the thinner and smaller case over a slightly cooler laptop. It's on my lap as I type this, and I've been working for about an hour, moving every 10-15 minutes just to change positions, not because I was on fire
I'm converting our office to total Macintosh. Each computer we've purchased from Apple, from a G5 Tower to several G4 and Intel Minis, to now this MacBook; each one has worked right out of the box, with no issues. Makes my job easy, I plug them in, and they JUST work!
I will say our first experience was bad. We left the Mac platform in 1992, after the IIfx computer. Our return back to OSX was with a Powermac G5 Single 1.8G model. It was one of the infamous late 1.8G models that had random, and often, system freezes. It was totally unusable. After about a month in the closest Apple repair store, working nicely with Apple, they replaced it with a Dual 2.0GHz model. We just wanted a working computer, but they went the extra effort to give us a great machine that we're still using today, 24/7, with no problems. And, it's paid off back to Apple, since now, we are replacing each of our PCs with Macs.
For those that are having problems, just work nicely with your support techs. Document the problem and show evidence through logs, etc. Also, try to duplicate it if you're able to get to a Genius bar.
Hope this helps anyone that is getting worried about purchasing a MacBook. I traded in my Dell D800 to get this, and have no regrets!! It is one sweet, little machine!

  • Despite EFI update, Trackpad unresponsive on MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013)

Tonight (Nov 11), my trackpad stopped working completely on my MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013 - OS X 10.9). It does not seem to notice anything (clicks, movement, scrolling, etc.). Also my keyboard has stopped working once.
I have the Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update (Version 1.3), which was apparently installed as of November 8th. I've read that it is supposed to fix the problem, which is odd because the issue did not start for me until after I had the update. Would be grateful for some help. Thank you.
(Currently, I'm using my Logitech Cordless Click Optical Mouse as a replacement.)

I also have experienced the same problem even though I have installed the update.
I have asked Apple to ring me for a discussion today, however, not sure what can be done if the fix doesn't do what its supposed to do.
Happy days (my first Macbook pro) not so happy!!!
I would be grateful for any thoughts as to how I can prevent the lockups
    Regards

  • Migration to new macbook aluminum

I have recently purchased the latest macbook and its a happy upgrade from my ibook g4. My current problem is when doing the original migration over the wireless network after many hours, the connection failed. I then went to attempt the process again however this time via ethernet. When I went to do this, I was not prompted with the original page that asked to transfer from an old mac and went straight into the set up.
So my question is now that i have a set up macbook how do I do the migration from my old ibook?I would love to get the basics of music, pictures and documents from my old machine.
    Thanks so much!!

You can, but I would suggest you simply transfer the files manually over the network. There are some caveats to consider when moving from a PPC to an Intel Mac. See the following FAQ:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Help, MacBook won't shut down properly!!

Hi, just hoping someone can help with the following as my MacBook is not a happy bunny. I recently reformatted my hdd and restored my system using Time machine. This was to allow me to create a new partition so I could run bootcamp. All was fine for a few weeks, buy I have noticed recently that system preferences has become unreliable and fails to load on most occasions, freezing in the process - it shows in the dock, but does not load. I have OSX snow leopard all updates, two user accounts, guest activated. I have repaired disk permissions a number of times - sometimes works for a very limited time, other times not. I have deleted the finder and systempreferences .plist files in both user accounts, emptied trash and restarted, again limited effectiveness. When the sys prefs crashes, i force quit it, then it tends to load fine next time, but 2 mins later its up to its old tricks. On top of this, the Mac is now refusing to shut down - it will get to the spinning wheel phase then nothing, I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
I've also tried disabling the guest account, but no luck.
Any ideas gratefully received as I'm worried that jts all going crash soon !
    Many thanks
    Rich.

    Many thanks MJ,
I deleted everything you mentioned and sysprefs worked for a while but as soon as I tried opening an application e.g. mail, the first reboot of sysprefs worked fine, but subsequent ones hang. Funny thing is now the power down problem has gone away - it seems to work very quickly - I guess a function of clearing out the caches folder?
Anyway, sysprefs issue remains. Ive reported the fault to apple anonymously (have copy of report if that helps). Here are the console messages during a number of restarts and subsequent attempts to open sys prefs. If you/others need more please let me know (the last line represents me forcing a quit of sysprefs):

  • Macbook w/Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a Macbook that I just bought 3 days ago. Like everyone else, I am having the same problem with wireless encryption.
However, when I turn off the WPA and just use WEP, I can connect but it seems to lag. What I mean is everytime I browse, it's almost like my computer needs to "reconnect" with the router. If I stay a a site for more than a couple of minutes the connection kind of goes to sleep. It shows I am connected but it just sits there, sits there, and then connects. When I am on WPA or wired I do not get this.
So, for my actual question, does the Airport Extreme Base Station have issues like this?
On Apple.com, people are giving it glowing reviews. On the net, the reviews are marginal at best.
    Current Setup:
    Macbook
    Linksys WRT54GX4 w/SRX400
    Thanks in advance!

I have several Linksys routers and also an Airport Extreme Base Station. I like the Linksys better. The AEBS has arguably better output power than my Linksys, but in my 1600 square foot house, it doesn't matter.
I also have a Macbook c2duo running OSX 10.4.10, and it drops off the AEBS just as much as any other router.
The downside of the AEBS is that it doesn't have a native web based management system. You've got to use the management tool to deal with the AEBS using SNMP protocol. It'd be nice if you had to manage 100 AEBS, but is a nuisance for home use. I found the latest realase of Airport utility (v5.2) to be very buggy on Windows XP - it killed my PC's abaility to negotiate a DHCP lease until I downgraded back to version 5.1. I ultimately went back to using my WRT54GS. The Linksys has lower throughput, but that only matters for specsmanship. The other thing is that Linksys can do multiple PPTP VPN pass through, but VPN pass through doesn't work on the AEBS unless you use bridge mode and static IPs.
I spent the cash for the AEBS, but in retrospect I would have rather put it towards memory upgrades, etc.

  • DVDs & CDs won't mount on my Macbook.

I have a 2008 Macbook that will no longer play DVDs or CDs. When the disc is inserted, the drive makes some funny noises (more than just the usual crunching sound and whirring) then after about 10 seconds the disc is ejected. I have tried several different discs all with the same result. I have tried inserting a laser lens cleaning disc and it gets ejected too. These same discs that I am trying to play worked just fine last week. I have tried modifying some settings in Preferences and I have restarted the machine as well as shut down and restarted. Nothing seems to help. Any suggestions? The OS X I am running is Snow Leopard if that makes any difference.

The gist of the topic surrounding compatibility of the Apple USB SuperDrive (recent version) with older models of MacBook/Pro, /Air, iMac (intel) that had built-in optical drives, is that the older models would see their internal drive as the correct boot drive for an OS X disc. And not see the newer optical superdrive, due to changes, as one. The older Apple USB SuperDrive model was different in this regard; as was the early model intended for MB/Air.
However, I've heard of brands such as LG who make a generic USB superdrive that is less costly and it has been said these can be used as an external USB boot drive for OS X discs.
In either situation, a superdrive's compatibility for simply playing or recording to media discs is one thing; being able to boot an OS X system on DVD media is another. So there is a gray area when interpreting this. I'd suspect a generic USB superdrive may be worth the effort due to the lower cost; should it not work out exactly, it will still work as a good player. It may also do OK even if the OS X may balk at recording media (had not read that it causes issues) in so much as a work-around would be to use other recording software to use the drive.
A standalone drive, if you talk to the vendor about your issue or need for compatibility, may be an answer; especially when the original internal superdrive has failed. This OWC page has a few different options; of course internal options need to match the computer specs. External options could work, however that's why I'd ask directly, by email or phone...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/
There are a few items to note in this iFixit guide regarding the newest Apple USB superdrive that could make it worth consideration as a replacement, due to some kind of patch that may (or may not) work. Looks as though it could. Details and a method are referred to here:
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_USB_SuperDrive -- with more details about a workaround:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/23023/Can+I+use+the+AirSuperDrive+as+an+Exter nal+Drive+the+Mac+laptops
The method discussed in the above thread suggests a possible workaround, but may be too narrow to reasonably buy a new retail Apple USB Superdrive, to try it. The topic is interesting.
    {Of course, there also are companies whose business is to repair and restore function to older Mac portables, and some are quite good at that; if you need an older model to continue use of software investment of a vintage era, compared to the latest newest models. OWC site has a few on occasion, & wegenermedia does, too; inventories vary. Or they could fix yours. There are times when it is good to have an identical spare computer; a backup device.}
There are a few options noted in following page, where LG, Samsung, & a few others are listed:
    http://www.macmall.com/n/Best-External-DVD-Drive-Mac/macMainMenu-2286?q=macMainM enu-2286
Some users in the ASC discussions had good result from LG and Samsung models as external USB superdrives for use with older MacBook/iMac models whose internal optical drives had failed. Since the newest MacBook/Pro or /Air do not have optical drives, nor do the iMac or Mini, the newest Apple USB Superdrive would require a workaround to see if it could work. Some have done that, but I doubt they went out and bought the Apple model to modify it. First, it costs more than the other brands; and second, it is not recommended to modify the product because that likely would void Apple warranty.
Anyway, I'd consider a third-party name brand for the older product external superdrive replacement path; but the LG and Samsung may be able to work OK for burning discs, and to boot the computer from an OS X install disc. Some other brands of burners would prefer another brand of software to burn discs. •If you contact macsales/OWC, ask if they have a product that can use the OS X included drivers (so you install nothing) to burn DVD/CD, and about compatibility with commercial recorded discs; and also the question of importance with original install-restore or retail upgrade DVD, if they boot Mac System DVDs and support OS X like the original-internal optical superdrive.
Hopefully you can get a workable solution for your old MacBook.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook Pro disappointment

I am an Apple User for 5 years now. I've had my first Apple product, Ipod mini (green), during my college years. When Apple releases new products, I made sure I am aware of it and find a way to have it. My father gave me my first Macbook last year and I am really satisfied with it as well as other Apple products (Iphone, IPad, Ipod Touch). Of course, there is always a need for us to upgrade our gadgets. So I decided to get the new improved Macbook Pro. We bought it last year but did not avail the AppleCare for I know that this new Macbook Pro is more versatile and multi-tasker than the Macbook I had. I never had any problems with my Apple products but a few days ago, a thin green line appeared on my screen. I was so disappointed. I asked somebody from the service center here in Manila for what I should do and they said that I need to replace the screen. It drove me mad when they told me the price I had to pay because I no longer have the warranty from Apple. I couldn't believe that this can happen too soon knowing that I have tested the other product (Macbook) and was really happy with it. This laptop was only used for a year and 4 months. It would have been okay if this is not pricey.
I am hoping that Apple would do something about this. And I am hoping that this message will get to their attention.

    (1) Unfortunately, these things happen. It is my impression that, on average, the quality of Apple products is slightly above the average, but the average is pretty low these days.
    (2) Fixing a notebook computer, irrespective of manufacturer, is always expensive. The parts are flimsier and working with them is trickier and more difficult than with desktop machines.
    (3) Fixing Apple computers is always more expensive than fixing another brand. The market share is much smaller, so both parts and labour are more expensive. It's something you need to keep in mind when deciding upon a purchase.
    (4) Follow eric grenoble1's advice. Talk to Apple. Perhaps even write them a nice letter, explaining the situation, how much you liked your MBP, what you did with it, and why fixing it is important. Apple is not a charity; it's run like any other corporation, to make money; but sometimes they can appreciate the value of good will. Keep in mind that the higher up the ladder you can manage to reach, the more likely you are to get a helpful answer.
    (5) This forum is definitely monitored by Apple (after all, they'd be fools not to, since they are hosting it on their servers!). However, it is monitored for bad language and items that run contrary to Apple policies and interests. It is NOT monitored for customer feedback, customer satisfaction, or to provide customer support. If you post anything here in the hope that "Apple will hear this", IOW, that your words will reach someone of any consequence at Apple, or who can speak on behalf of Apple, you are wasting your time. Utterly.

  • MacBook keyboard spill damage?

    Hello all
I recently purchased a spill damaged Macbook late 2007 Core 2 Duo 2GHz 1GB RAM. Opened it up and cleaned it all out with water dispersent and contact cleaner and re-pasted the heatsinks. Plugged the keyboard in, hit the power button and... Nothing!
So I watched this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cnXsKBX5LM tried it and pow, Macbook fires up! Happy days, now have a semi-working macbook for under £30.
My question now relates to the keyboard and its port/socket on the logic board. If I am able to start the Macbook using the method in the video above, can I assume that its the keyboard that is damage/broken and not the port on the board? And that if I were to buy a new one for around £50 would it work?
I realise nobody could give me a definitive answer but a general consensus would be prime
    Thanks in advance. TRTH

Based in the information provided, no, you can't assume that the keyboard itself is faulty. What a liquid spill is involved anything could be shorted out. So in your case it could be the keyboard, it could bethe logic board or it could be both. Without the proper tools and knowledge to check the components out all you can do is start throwing money at it and hope the first cheapest thing you try works!

  • MacBook Black: Selling - Leopard license question

    Greetings,
I'm interested in selling my MacBook Black. The only lingering question I'd like some advise on is what exactly to do with the Leopard license that will come with my new MacBook... I'll explain.
My current MacBook Black came with 10.4.x, and when Leopard came out I purchased a family pack (5 seats) to install on my Mac Pro (quad core) and MacBook Black. Now that I'm looking to sell the MacBook Black I'd like to ship it with Leopard installed... here's what I thought about doing.
While holding on to the MacBook Black, purchase a new MacBook. Wipe the new MacBook and do a clean install from my family pack. Transfer files from the MacBook Black to the new MacBook, verify everything is happy, make a backup of my new MacBook. Wipe my old MacBook Black and do a clean install of the Leopard license that came with my new MacBook, and ship this original disk along with all related contents to the purchaser.
My only concern is that if the family pack of Leopard keeps track of installs... would this read 3/5 installations when at this point it should only be 2/5? Also I'm not 100% certain if it matters using an older Leopard install disk on the new machine and the newer Leopard install disk on the old machine.
I'm all about doing this in a professional manner, and initially it doesn't seem like I'd need to purchase yet another Leopard license for the purchaser because one already comes with my new MacBook.
Any advise would be much appreciated

That's correct. You cannot install your copy of Leopard from the new computer onto the one your will sell. That violates the license agreement. Your Family Pak does not extend to the original discs that come with the new computer. If you were to install Leopard in that way then you would be legally obliged to provide the original discs from your new computer to the person who buys the old one. You do not want to do that for two reasons: 1) the discs contain your pre-bundled software, Windows Boot Camp drivers installer, and the Apple Hardware Test suite; 2) they are OEM discs and will only work on your new computer.
True, the computer will not have Leopard installed on it. If the new owner wants Leopard, then they can purchase their own legal copy or you can purchase a single-license copy of Leopard to provide with the computer when you sell it.
    Legally these are your alternatives.

  • Speakers for MacBook

I recently bought a new Black Macbook and am very happy wih everything except the sound. Its just too soft. Now, I wasn't sure where to post this (so my apologies if this is not the right place), but what speakers would you recommend for me? I play guitar (quite loudly I should add), and like to play along with the song sometimes. So I need speakers that are reasonably loud and have good sound. I'm willing to pay anything up to about $400... Anything from the apple store would be great (if you could provide a link to the speakers your refering to, it would help quite alot). Thanks...

    Hi there
I recently got myself an apple ipod speaker, and it is LOUD, I live in a 2 storey house with solid walls, I can hear the speaker in the living room from upstairs and its not even at full volume. Sound quality wise, its acceptable, the old fashion hi-fi system would be better since you can place the speakers at either side of the room. But then there's gona b wires laying around the place, whereas this Apply hi-fi just needs a power cable and an ipod and you are set (it has a sound input in the back for you to plug in other devices like a CD player and of course your macbook).
    And here's a link to the speaker: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=EA7 50468&nplm=M9867LL/A

So Ive been reading and reading some more...comparing Macbook and MacbookPro. Is the only thing you cant do on a Macbook is alot of gaming? I know there is a shared graphics card on a Macbook...can you watching movies on a Macbook? Id like to take advantage of the new rental system in itunes.
Just trying to justify the 1000 difference between the macbook and the macbook pro...seeing if I really need a Macbook pro to be happy and do what I want. Thanks
