My MacBook Pro is locked by a third party who wants $300 to unlock it. Any suggestions?

  • MacBook Pro with Third Party USB External Modem ? Drivers? Network Pane?

I bought my brother a MacBook Pro last month, and he is using it fine in Pakistan with my Airport base station and cable internet access. Problem is when he is on the road, and using GPRS with his Sony Ericsson P900/910 is terribly expensive there. So, I have to send him an Apple USB modem (that I am yet to hear good things about). However, he does have an external third party USB modem that works fine with PC laptops. Are there any generic drivers for USB modems built into OS X in MacBooks? How would he go about using the external USB modem in Network control panel and using a generic driver?
Is there a way to use Parallels (that he has) to connect to Internet from the Windoze USB modem and have MacOS X use the Windows connection as the "router"? Thanks.

  • Connect Airpot Express on Macbook Pro to third-party base station

I recently bought a second Macbook Pro and I am having trouble connecting it to my netgear MR814 router. I use WEP encryption 128-bit hex. I got this working on my first one (in fact I'm using that computer to write this post) but it took me along time to get it working and I don't know what I did. It just suddenly worked. So how can I get this second Macbook to connect to my network?
    I have tried common fixes:
    1. $(password)
    2. selecting WEP in security type
    3. selecting WEP 40/128 bit hex
    nothing has worked. any suggestions?

Hello imustflee. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Any particular reason you don't use WPA or WPA2 instead of WEP? I would recommend it as WEP is no longer considered secure.
The problem with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP. In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.
If you must use WEP, I suggest that you create a 26-HEX character password on the Netgear, and use this same password when accessing it from either Macs or PCs.

  • Urgent Warning About Third-Party Batteries!

Canon, Nikon, Sony, and other companies are starting to put code in their camera firmware that locks out third-party batteries in their cameras and chargers. So do not update your firmware if you are already using third-party batteries in your camera. Obviously, these changes make the third-party batteries that Best Buy carries in their stores as well as via part-search/marketplace useless, so Best Buy needs to work on carrying more manufacturer-made camera batteries in their stores as I've noticed that there are many cameras that Best Buy sells or have recently sold which have no batteries available in their stores or only have third-party equivalents available in the stock.

    Hi LexMachine,
Thanks for the information, and if accurate it could be concerning for people currently using these batteries. I have also just stuck with the manufacturer's batteries, but can't say I haven't been tempted by the less costly third party substitutions.
Can I ask where you are getting this information? Is there a link(s) you can provide? Not saying it's not accurate, but would like to verify this information.
    Thanks,

  • What happens when you buy from a third party vender

I am wondering what happens when you buy a macbook form a third party vender. In my case it is amazon.com. I am reading about people returning their macbook's to apple for a refund due to the high pitched whine everyone is talking about. My understanding is that we can still send them to apple to get fixed for the noise, but even if they can't fix it we still can't get a refund right? If I try to return it to Amazon as a defective product who decides if it is? Apple or Amazon?
    Kalel

Amazon's return policy on computers doesn't exclude any brands, so I'd say that you could return it. Here's a link to it if you'd like to read it:

  • Macbook coin operated lock & third party accessories

    Hi,
Question, the coin operated lock/latch on my white macbook broke while trying to get to the battery. Can this be replace? or any suggestions as to how to affix it. I am thinking of gluing it back but I am not too sure if it would be safe to do. Also, the battery is bulging out. I have heard reports of this in other postings. I am not sure while this happens.
Also does anyone have any experiences using a third party for mac accessories. I am considering replacing my battery with one from Newer Technology? They have a compatible battery for my model, and it is selling about $40 cheaper than Apple's.
All comments will be greatly appreciated.

Apple or an authorized service provider can fix the battery lock.

  • Is there a way to have MSOffice-Mac on my MacBook Air sync wirelessly (and non-manually) with iWork on my iPhone without a third-party app?

I purchased a MacBook Air after hearing that it can sync wirelessly with all iOS devices. I then purchased the iWork office for my college courses and found out that the school requires online students like me to use Microsoft Office for Mac. An Apple phone rep explained that this software syncs in read-only mode with the iPhone. Is there really no way - besides third party software like Dropbox, Windows Live SkyDrive, or Docs To Go - for me to sync my homework between iWork on my iPhone and MS Office my new MacBook?

Go through this article: How to back up your data and set up as a new device or do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your phone without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

I want to change the settings (brightness, contrast, gamma) for my internal cam on Macbook pro. I find having to but a third party software (iglasses, webcam settings) to control basic settings as unnecessary and exploitative. Does anyone have a solution?

It is not about payment of $19.95 (Igalsses) or $7.99(webcam settings). This is a very basic setting that should be available in the system settings. The automatic setting of the internal cam does not work great on low lighting as everyone is aware.
i am just amazed how users take in lying down and suggest solutions such as paying for a 3rd party paid app or improving the lighting in your room.

  • Anyone else have difficulty using third party software and websites with the new MacBook Pro with retinal display?

I just returned my new Mac book pro with retinal display after three very disappointing three weeks of trying to use certain websites and other third party programs (Quickbooks, Raintree) that would not function properly.  My husband own the previous MacBook Pro version with the built in CD rom and I was able to use those above mentioned websites and problems with the no difficulties.  Did I just happen to get a lemon or is this a function of the computer being too new for third party software?

Programs such as Quickbooks pro for Mac, I was able to import my previous data and I was able to enter about 5 new transactions before it stopped being able to save transactions.  Other programs ( Raintree ) that I use via VM software as a windows based program I was able to access and use some features but not others.  On the web browsers (both safari and Mozilla) I use a website that has an analyzer feature and it would pull up a blank screen in the place where I would enter pertinent information.  They tried pulling this website at the apple store today and the same issue happened.  All these programs and website I am able to access and run smoothly with no issues on my husbands MacBook Pro , which is why I returned my MacBook.  I just wondered if others were experiencing similar issues with their MacBook with retinal display.

  • Third Party Broadband Access and MacBook

I have been using Verizon's Wireless Broadband PC Card with both my MacBook and PowerBook G3 both running MAC OS 10.4.9 with no problems for about 4 months. Today, my MacBook went through a series of software updates, including firmware, airport, and about 10 others. Now my MacBook won't recognize my Verizon PC card. I uninstalled the VZ ACCESS MANAGER and reinstalled it. I called Verizon and they told me I had to talk to Mac Support. I talked to Mac Support and they can't help me because it's third party. Has anyone encountered this problem and solved it? It's not a problem with the PC card because it's still working on my PowerBook which is how I am able to be online now.
I appreciate some help, here. Thanks.

How did you put the PC card from your G3 in your MacBook?
Don't use the CD/ DVD slot!
If you mean "MacBook Pro", you need a different card.
