Macbook loses keyboard and touch pad

My old, white Macbook, early 2008 model, 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM, loses access to the keyboard and touchpad on a random basis.  It usually happens after the machine has not been touched for a few minutes.  It does not appear to have any relationship to the power saving options though.
So far I've reset NVRAM, repaired permissions, and reset the SMC.  No change.
Attaching an external keyboard and mouse allows me to keep on working, otherwise I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button down for 10 seconds to shut it off.  Without the externals, there's no way to recover short of a shutdown.  Everything is back to normal on the restart.
Any other ideas short of taking it in to a tech?

Thanks for the idea.
I had taken the battery out as part of the SMC reset and it was fine, though it make me wonder if there could be a heat relationship.  I've had intermittent problems like this with Windows boxes when heat caused connectors to gradually work their way loose.  As temperatures go up and down, when the fans run, it could cause a brief connection loss.  It wouldn't have to be much to lose it.  Don't know how Apple configures its hardware, but one brief glitch could cause permanent loss during the current session. Interestingly, it never happens when I'm typing or using the trackpad.

  • Keyboard and Touch Pad are Dead!

Today the keyboard and touch pad died on my MacBook Pro. Both were working fine earlier this morning, but suddenly stopped working this evening. Not only that, but now OS-X takes a very long time to boot and shut down as well as Windows Vista on my bootcamp partition. Also, the cooling fan spins at full speed during boot-up and stays at full speed when the login screen appears. It never did this before.
I connected a USB keyboard and mouse to my computer, and they worked fine. I have tried the SMC reset, but the problem still persists. I have tried safe boot, but it doesn't work. Is this a case of corrupted files or something more sinister?
    UPDATE
I noticed that I no longer have a sound device. When I opened Sound, there was no device listed at all. Also, the fan is running at full speed when the CPU load is minimal (98%-100% free). Think I'm gonna need some Crown and Coke after tonight.

I took your advice and went to the Apple Store in Ginza, Tokyo. I was so surprised at how easy they made the entire process! I will have my MacBook Pro repaired at no cost, because it is still under warranty. A lot of companies could learn from Apple's customer support model! Finally, you should see the fancy Star Trek-like elevator!!! Unbelievable visit today!!! Thanks Apple!

  • Keyboard and Touch-Pad Not Working After Having to Install New Hard Drive

I had to install a new hard drive in my HP Pavillion DV9700t that has Vista Home Premium 64-bit.  After going through the recovery process with backup disk the built in keyboard and touch-pad do not work.  During the installation, an error message came up saying something along the lines of "the drivers are not supported by this verison of windows because they are unsigned."  The drivers that had that error were "hpqkbfiltr keyboard filter driver," "HP remote control HID Device," and "hpqkdfilter driver."  I tried to update the drivers for the keyboard from the hp website, but the keyboard and touch-pad still do not work.
My question is, where do I find the digitally signed drivers for the keyboard and touch-pad that Vista won't flag and disable?
    Help please!

    Sparkles,
    Thanks for the suggestions.
When dealing with MS Fix It, I was choosing run.  Upon further investigation on that site, there really isn't a scan that applies to my issue anyways I tried the .NET Framework repair tool, and that seemed to work.  It told me to try re-running what I was having issues with, so I tried running the Windows PowerShell again, but again was faced with the following message "windows update standalone installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247." I went back to the .NET screen and hit "Next" because it didn't work, and that responded by saying they were going to submit logs to Microsoft.  I won't hold my breath on that one.
I'm to the point where I honestly don't care anymore.  I have no idea what to do, because doing a clean install with the discs HP sent me isn't going to help because they are just recovery discs, and not an actual Windows disk.  This is the second hard drive I have had to put into my laptop and use those recovery disks on in the last 3-years.  The built-in keyboard hasn't worked during that time frame on either hard drive.  I don't think the recovery disks I was sent install properly.  Not sure where to go from here.  I spent way too much money on this laptop years ago having it custom built to handle all of my drafting programs, so I don't want to just kick it to the curb.  I was looking into the possibility of just replacing it, but I cannot stand the Windows 8 interface.
I guess I should have fixed the issue with the keyboard on this hard drive before loading all of my programs.  Between the recovery disk install, formatting of the hard drive, and installing all of my programs it took well over 12 hours.  Not really looking forward ot that again Then there's shockwave and flash and all of the other goodies that my recovery disks won't restore anyways.
Sorry if this seems like a negative post, but I'm just tired of trying to no avail.  Maybe I should just take it somewhere to get it looked at, but I can't see them being successful if the recovery disks won't help anyways.
    Thanks for you help,
    MadBuch

  • Cannot load the recovery media since my keyboard and touch pad do not work

My labtop Toshiba C55D-A5392 may have a virus issue which cause the keyboard and touch pad do not function.  initially only a few keys don't work...after a couple days most keys don't work and now no keys are working and the touch pad failed too. I can't even load up windows now.   I bought a recovery media from toshiba and try to reset the laptop to factory settings.  I received the USB drive media from Toshiba, but I cannot load it since I cannot get the laptop into the bios (since my keyboard does not work).  Can anyone help me to resolve this issue?

  • Dynabook C7 - Need part number for keyboard and touch pad

    Hi there!
I have a few questions about my toshiba dynabook C7 laptop.
I want to change my old keyboard and touch pad as they do not work properly. The problem is that i can't find those parts because this model was delivered only for Japan market. So maybe somebody knows number of the models of those parts that might be suitable for my laptop? Or name of the laptop that is similar to my dynabook c7. The full model name is TOSHIBA DYNABOOK C7/212CMEN portege 4101 series
    Thx in advance.
    Cheers!

Hmmm... it can be pretty complicated. As you probably know it is not easy to get any info about those specific for Japan produced notebooks. I am pretty familiar with Toshiba notebook models and your notebook can be the same as Portege A100.
Google a little bit around and try to find info about Portege A100. I believe this notebook was offered in UK only.

    Hello,
    IBM Thinkpad T43

Keyboard and touch pad completely do not work in Windows.
    They do work in BIOS.
Tried connecting external USB keyboard.  They also does not work
Getting Conflicting Device error in Device Manager for keyboard and touch pad
exclamation point is on the keyboard device.
getting Error Code 10 on keyboard.
I cant go to a prior restore point.  That does not work.
tried uninstalling them, that didn't work either.
can't change auto configuration...it is grayed out.
    Please help.
    What can I do?

This is really strange I must say...
But you say you are using the same drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit, this shouldn't affect the PE-part, but make sure you are using the correct drivers 64-bit for x64 OS and 32-bit for x86 :)
If you make a bootable memmory stick from the 32-bit deployment share, does it work then or is it the same problem?
Could it be as easy that the deployment share isn't updated?

I also said that nothing's missing so, I thought it implies that only correct drivers are there.
I filter out all unwanted versions from both deployment shares to save on disk space.
Deployment Share have been refreshed several times with refreshing PE images too.
Mem-stick for 32-bit version works fine - keyboard and touch-pad work in it.

  • My Hp Pavllion dv7 keyboard and touch pad will not work

Hi. My Hp Pavllion dv7 keyboard and touch pad will not work. Been going on for a few months now. Read in the support forum that replacing the battery might help however it hasnt. Ran updates for Windows Vista and Microsoft Security Ess. Boots up just fine however unable to place in my password to get to my user profile and always have to work from guest......unless I have a USB keyboard handly at the time. I use a USB wireless mouse as well.
    Please help and thank you

The keyboard and mouse (touchpad) are separate devices which could go bad at the same time but that would be a huge coincidence. I would try reseating the ribbon cables to the motherboard for both. Here is the Service Manual:

  • Macbook Pro keyboard and track pad freeze

I have tried about 15 times now to post this due to the following problem
Today my keyboard and track pad have suddenly frozen. In appears as if the OS is fine and running but I can't input any kind of key or cursor movement. I have to restart it. Is this common? It's bad news because I have work to do and I can't just get used to using the save command every 30 seconds. That's why I switched to Apple; I was sick of this and similar issues with PCs. Anyone. . . Ideas??

This happened twice to me in the last five months. I had to take it in for service; the first time, they replaced the keyboard, and the second time, they replaced the entire logic board. The problem hasn't come back so far.
If you need the computer urgently, it should work if you plug in an external keyboard and mouse. However, I think you'll probably have to take it in for service in order to get the problem fixed.

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard and tracking pad issues

I bought a refurbed macbook pro from Apple about 10 months ago. I've loved everything about it . . . until now. Yesterday I turned it on and started having keyboard issues. First the y key wouldn't work, then the rest of the keys followed. At that point, it was still starting up normally, but then the tracking pad would only "right click" on items on my desk top, so I couldn't open applications.
Now it will only open up in safe mode and it makes a noise like I'm pressing all the keys at once at start-up. Nothing happened to it between Saturday night when it was working perfectly and Sunday morning so I'm mystified. I brought it to the genius bar this morning and they also couldn't see what was wrong. Genius said something about how some keys looked "stuck" but mentioned it didn't looked like anything was spilled on it or anything.
The only "weird" thing about it is that the hing between the screen and the keyboard has always been a little loose but I didn't know until my husband bought a new pro a few months later and I felt the difference. The genius didn't seem to think that would mean anything.
They told me it would be at least $280 to send it out, diagnose, and fix it. Considering it's less than a year old, I'm a little reluctant (and poor) to do that right way especially since he had no clue what the problem might be.
I'm planning on trying another Genius Bar to see if they might have a better idea (hey, it worked with my ipod once) but I've been combing the message boards to see if anyone has had a similar issue. I found an older thread that talked about 2008 pros haven't issues with the keyboard and trackpad freezing due to a "faulty pressure connector" so I might try that solution when I get home. But any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you bought your Mac from Apple 10 months ago, it should still be covered by the 1 year warranty and as long as the problem was not caused by accidental damage of some sort, it should be repaired at no cost to you. Was the store aware that you were still under warranty?
You can even upgrade to 3 year Applecare if you do so before the first year of ownership is up--definitely something to do if your Mac is having troubles already.
When you see the next genius, make sure they know you are still in the 1 year warranty period, and if you can, upgrade to 3 year Applecare.
You can also call Applecare on the phone and tell them about these problems and ask them for a case number, which will at least establish that they started while you were still under warranty. If a problem first occurs under warranty, Apple will honor the warranty until the problem is fixed, even if the warranty runs out in the meantime.
    Good luck!

  • Keyboard and Touch pad is not responding

I have one Lenovo G450 with Windoxs 7 which was working fine. But suddenly I am having some strange behavior.
Like, when I am starting my laptop then its keypad or touch pad is not responding. After couple of shut down/restart (can't figure out how many times, actually its not constant) the keypad or touch pad is responding and working fine. Again when I shut down and try to start sometime later then having the same problem.
    Please help.

    Hi
    Welcome to Lenovo Community
Please check the following options .
Try entering the Bios using F2 Button , If you are able to enter Bios
    Load Setup defaults .
Then try to Load system to safe mode by pressing F8 key & check if you are able to use the Keyboard and Mouse
If it is working fine then try to uninstall the devices from device manager . Restart the system and boot to normal mode
and verify the keyboard & touchpad is responding .
