Macbook (mid 2012, 9,2) has very poor performance since the day I bought it (less than 2 months ago)

Problem description:
My macbook is extremely slow since the day I bought it (which was less than 2 months ago)…Came preinstalled with Mavericks and 4GB of RAM. Upgraded it to 16GB hoping that would help, but that did very little…then upgraded to Yosemite. That just made it worse. Formatted the whole thing and installed clean Yosemite. Still, every time I right click, I get the rainbow loading icon and it hangs. Every time I open any file, or click any app, it hangs for a few seconds, again with a loading icon. Every time I play a song on iTunes or even VLC for that matter, it stops multiple times, every few seconds. Feels like it’s “buffering” while I’m playing a song off my hard drive. It’s been bothering me for too long now…Any idea what the issue is exactly?

If it has been slow since it came out of the box, it's probably defective. The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.

  • Blackberry Link for Q10 with Outlook Sync has very poor performance and not good Functionality

I am wondering if anyone has tested this software. Blackberry Sync software for my previous phones were wonderful. I can sync my contacts and calender in a very short time. With this new Blackberry Link it takes about 1 1/2 hours Plus to complete. And when it does complete - it duplicates entries which I did not want.
Plus what is missing is the following:
        1. I am not able to say Update both Device and Outlook any longer. This functionality is gone.
My question: How does it do a two way sync if I only have a choice to use what I have on my phone or on outlook only
I want to be able to update my Outlook contacts with changes and addition I made on my Q10 phone and update my device with changes I made to Outlook.
Why did Blackberry remove this very flexible choice? Plus Blackberry Link has very poor performance.
I work for a large company and I do Enterpirse Software testing daily. Performance is the number one complaint for customers on top of the UI and functionality.

    Thanks for the reply.

A thing I noticed when I opened Descktop Software for the first time since the new Z30 is that the old application thinks it is looking for a Z30.  I havent even opened the application since before I got the new device.  The only way it could think I have a Z30 is if it is using a lot of the same files as Blackberry Link.   That is some pretty terrible software development practices in my opinion.  I'm going to take your suggestion and uninstall both apps, run a registry cleaner and reinstall BB Link and I bet it works a lot better afterwards.
    EDIT 12 March 2014 7PM EST
Still all of the same errors with regard to syncing outlook contacts and Schedules.  I will post all of the error messages I recieve here as I see them.  Application is always started by connecting device with USB cable.
    "Sync was unseccessful
Caught _com_error exception. Description(): Error in MAPILogonEx: MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED; Error(): -2147467259 (0x80004005); ErrorMessage(): Unspecified error; Source(): XCPCRdmptn.RdRDOSession"
    REBOOT
Change to sync contacts only, 1-way sync to computer, always use device data
    "Sync was unsuccessful
CPreferencesManager: Configuration Value for /Preferences/Account_1_65537/DevicePin not set in TransConfig.xml for translator RimBB"
    REBOOT
Application went through the whole process and hung for about 15 minutes and then completed successfuly syncing contacts only.
Change to callendar only.  Sync completed successfuly.  No hang or errors. very quick.
A new recurring appointment on the device was not transferred to the computer.
    Sync callendar again, completed successfuly.
Appointment is still not transferred to computer.
So far I've spent an hour tonight trying to sync my contacts and appointment changes from just one day.  I'm not thrilled.

  • How do I get apple to fix my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) screen, which has always ghosted?

Since I bought my MacBook (mid-2012) the screen has had ghosting problems. Like, since day 0. At first it wasn't really a problem. I wasn't doing graphical work; I didn't need "pixel perfect." But, then I started needing to spend time in Photoshop again. The ghosting made it a frustrating and error-prone process.
My screen ghosts in about 30 seconds of being on the same image for any visible region. So, basically, if if I work at zoom 100% for 30 seconds, using the brush for a few quick strokes, then zoom in, I have to wait another 30 seconds for the false-shadows and hues to go away. It was unusable. I was busy, so I just started doing graphical work on my linux workstation with Gimp. I was too busy to get it repaired.
Finally, a year or so ago when I had some time, I brought my computer into the Apple store. I told them of my ghosting issue, along with an odd sound from the fan when the CPU was pegged. They held it overnight. They claimed they did some diagnostics and cleaned the fan. I thought, well, I don't think that will fix anything, but I signed off. The Applestore staff are very friendly. It's difficult to say, "wait, no -- this is ****** up," to them.
Of course, that fixed nothing. Why would it? I went back to being busy. Then, recently, I had more time again. I brought my laptop into the store. Since Apple had just issued a notice about my year's laptop having graphics issues, I thought, "finally, they understand there is a problem!" They took my computer and shipped it out to Texas, aware of not only the random buffer-level (graphics card) pixelation, but also about the ghosting. It came back with a new logic board and heat sink. Again, this didn't seem likely to fix it, but I didn't object at the store. They were so friendly there.
I bring it home. Unsurprisingly, the ghosting issue was unresolved. This fantastic retna screen is functionally useless for me when doing graphical work. On my Apple. A computer that lauds the creative power of graphical designers. Really?
In no world this okay (see video) for an Apple product that I spent several thousands of dollars on, with the expectation that I could do graphical work. The challenge I heard both times from Apple employees -- "how long were you on the same screen" -- is an utterly absurd question. The video answers it -- about 30 seconds. But, in any case, you can't bill this as a high resolution screen for graphical designers and artists with this problem. We spend time on single screens, fussing over single pixels for hours.
I'm willing to assume that my screen was oddly defective. And, that this was not indicative of a common fault in this particular model. But, it demands resolution. The screen needs to be replaced. I'm tired of explaining that to the Apple store.

  • Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal?

Can Apple replace my macbook pro (mid 2012) retina's battery if I think that the battery health has gone bad/in need of and renewal???
I've had my Macbook for about 11 months now and i use it every day; its gone though about 420 cycles of charging and using the power, and i noticed the battrey preformance has decreased (as expected). The problem isn't sevear yet but it would comfort me knowing that i could replace the battery in the near future
Please contact me or answer the question if you know anything about this!

No only if they think under warranty/AppleCare, but your likely able to pay for a new battery if they have them, which they might not yet since it's such a new machine still.
BTW, I have a Early 2011 17" MBP, 27 months old, charges to 97% and has only 14 cycles.

  • Macbook MID-2012 crashing every day (Kernel Panic)

    Hi!
I hope I'll find some help here.
My new Macbook (MID 2012) is crashing everyday. I read that this might be a RAM issue (maybe due to the fact that I installed 16GB 1600Mhz of Crucial), but this would really surprise me because I only got this issue after some weeks of the RAM replacement. In some cases I need to restart my MB a couple of times to get it run again. Also pretty weird, I got a similar issue when using Ableton Live, my trackpad an my keyboard freezes (computer continue working), and then I need to restart it a couple of times, and one of the two USB holes isn't working anymore (and to get it work again I need to reboot it again). For information : I have an USB hub with a MIDI keyboard connected, an external HDD, an USB Key, a Dongle, a Keyboard and a Mouse. I'm also using an external Audio Card, connected to the second USB hole, and a 27'' Screen. I really would like to reproduce theses crashes, but it's always happening at some random moment (not necesseraly due to a RAM overloard or so) Maybe some issue in my configuration.... Any thoughts ?
    Thanks in Advance !

Before you do anything, finc and remove the following kernel extension:
    com.avira.kext.FileAccessControl          1.0.0d1
...it could be anywhere but your root System>Library>Extensions would be a good place to start. If you can't find it, download the free "EasyFind" from the Mac App Store and search for "avira." Once you move the kext (to a Desktop folder, for example) reboot and see if you're still having kernel panics.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My MacBook pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 don't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs.

My MacBook Pro 2012 Mountain Loin 8.2 doesn't clear the inactive memory automatically when memory needed for other program so I get page outs. There are much inactive memory when page outs. Why my mac does this?

That's completely normal. If other programs require memory then the system will reallocate Inactive RAM as needed. Page Outs don't mean anything.
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • MSI GE70 2OE-015NL very poor performance on battery power

    Hey guys,
First of all I want to say that I'm really happy with my GE70 notebook. Everything works perfectly fine except for this one thing... When I play games on the notebook while on battery power, the performance is very poor. For example when I normally on AC power get around 250 FPS, it drops down all the way to around 40-60 FPS on battery power. In real demanding games this can be very annoying, since I have to play on AC power constantly for games like Battlefield 4. Although this isn't really a problem for me most of the time, I just don't think that's the concept of a notebook... I monitored some statistics using MSI Afterburner and I noticed that the GPU's core clock is clocked all the way down to a constant 135MHz whilst gaming and the memory is clocked all the way down to around 400MHz. I'm using a GTX 765M. I've already tried changing settings in the Windows power settings, the NVIDIA control panel and I even looked into the BIOS, but I couldn't find a solution to this problem. Apparently the GTX 700M series GPUs support Optimus technology which should give a decent battery life using the full power of your GPU, but for me it doesn't do so. The battery gets drained in around 45 minutes while gaming on very poor performance. I hope you guys can help me out!

    Oyo,
All Gamer NB are not done for play in battery mode, battery life are short and the power provide by a battery are far from the power adapter, this mean the NB get less power and your CPU and VGA are working in lower mode = lower result.
This is normal because link to the battery, thepower adapter provide 120W, the battery 49W, you see the gap between them ^^
So for play games, use the power adapter and the battery together, this is the best way.

  • Z key in macbook pro pops up on right side. Little pin on scissor clip underneath has broken. No stress on computer, is this apple covered? Otherwise where do I get a new scissor clip. Less than 3 months old.

On the Z key, the little scissor clip underneath on the right hand side has two little pointy bits which connect to the key, the top one of these has broken off and the key is barely hanging on, if pushed on the right side of the key, it pops up. I tried to push it back in but it keeps popping up.
My mac is less than 3 months old. The computer has been treated well and has not been used rough or treated badly, I imagine it's just an accident while typing or a weak clip.
Is this covered by Apple, if not where do I buy a new clip for under the key? -

u can give try to using external enclosre and backup ur files. I hope u will get files back. or using external enclosre with ur hdd boot into Linux and try to mount ur harddisk.
there are multiple no of tutorial to mount apple partion in Linux.

  • My MacBookPro is less than 3 months old and for the last few days, it has been  itslow to load anything, especially web pages.  I get the rainbow swirl when loading or reloading.  I guess I am spoiled.  Up until now it was lightening fast!

My MacBookPro is less than 3 months old and, for the last few days, it has been loading so slowly, mainly with webpages.  I have gotten the swirling rainbow "thinking" icon more in the last days than I have since I bought it.  I know I'm spoiled and expect it to be faster than lightening (which it has been) but I am worried that I may have been compromised in some way, or, is there anything I can do as administrator to clear out some "junk"?

Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
Given that your MacBook Pro is so new, you should certainly contact AppleCare and take advantage of the free telephone support included in its purchase price.
Until then, if you are motivated to investigate this yourself consider the following:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

  • Poor performance of the BDB cache

I'm experiencing incredibly poor performance of the BDB cache and wanted to share my experience, in case anybody has any suggestions.
    Overview
Stone Steps maintains a fork of a web log analysis tool - the Webalizer (http://www.stonesteps.ca/projects/webalizer/). One of the problems with the Webalizer is that it maintains all data (i.e. URLs, search strings, IP addresses, etc) in memory, which puts a cap on the maximum size of the data set that can be analyzed. Naturally, BDB was picked as the fastest database to maintain analyzed data on disk set and produce reports by querying the database. Unfortunately, once the database grows beyond the cache size, overall performance goes down the drain.
Note that the version of SSW available for download does not support BDB in the way described below. I can make the source available for you, however, if you find your own large log files to analyze.
    The Database
Stone Steps Webalizer (SSW) is a command-line utility and needs to preserve all intermediate data for the month on disk. The original approach was to use a plain-text file (webalizer.current, for those who know anything about SSW). The BDB database that replaced this plain text file consists of the following databases:
sequences (maintains record IDs for all other tables)
urls -primary database containing URL data - record ID (key), URL itself, grouped data, such as number of hits, transfer size, etc)
urls.values - secondary database that contains a hash of the URL (key) and the record ID linking it to the primary database; this database is used for value lookups)
urls.hits - secondary database that contains the number of hits for each URL (key) and the record ID to link it to the primary database; this database is used to order URLs in the report by the number of hits.
The remaining databases are here just to indicate the database structure. They are the same in nature as the two described above. The legend is as follows: (s) will indicate a secondary database, (p) - primary database, (sf) - filtered secondary database (using DB_DONOTINDEX).
    urls.xfer (s), urls.entry (s), urls.exit (s), urls.groups.hits (sf), urls.groups.xfer (sf)
    hosts (p), hosts.values (s), hosts.hits (s), hosts.xfer (s), hosts.groups.hits (sf), hosts.groups.xfer (sf)
    downloads (p), downloads.values (s), downloads.xfer (s)
    agents (p), agents.values (s), agents.values (s), agents.hits (s), agents.visits (s), agents.groups.visits (sf)
    referrers (p), referrers.values (s), referrers.values (s), referrers.hits (s), referrers.groups.hits (sf)
    search (p), search.values (s), search.hits (s)
    users (p), users.values (s), users.hits (s), users.groups.hits (sf)
    errors (p), errors.values (s), errors.hits (s)
    dhosts (p), dhosts.values (s)
    statuscodes (HTTP status codes)
    totals.daily (31 days)
    totals.hourly (24 hours)
    totals (one record)
countries (a couple of hundred countries)
    system (one record)
visits.active (active visits - variable length)
downloads.active (active downloads - variable length)
All these databases (49 of them) are maintained in a single file. Maintaining a single database file is a requirement, so that the entire database for the month can be renamed, backed up and used to produce reports on demand.
    Database Size
One of the sample Squid logs I received from a user contains 4.4M records and is about 800MB in size. The resulting database is 625MB in size. Note that there is no duplication of text data - only nodes and such values as hits and transfer sizes are duplicated. Each record also contains some small overhead (record version for upgrades, etc).
Here are the sizes of the URL databases (other URL secondary databases are similar to urls.hits described below):
    urls (p):
    8192 Underlying database page size
    2031 Overflow key/data size
1471636 Number of unique keys in the tree
1471636 Number of data items in the tree
193 Number of tree internal pages
577738 Number of bytes free in tree internal pages (63% ff)
55312 Number of tree leaf pages
145M Number of bytes free in tree leaf pages (67% ff)
2620 Number of tree overflow pages
16M Number of bytes free in tree overflow pages (25% ff)
    urls.hits (s)
    8192 Underlying database page size
    2031 Overflow key/data size
2 Number of levels in the tree
823 Number of unique keys in the tree
1471636 Number of data items in the tree
31 Number of tree internal pages
201970 Number of bytes free in tree internal pages (20% ff)
45 Number of tree leaf pages
243550 Number of bytes free in tree leaf pages (33% ff)
2814 Number of tree duplicate pages
8360024 Number of bytes free in tree duplicate pages (63% ff)
0 Number of tree overflow pages
    The Testbed
I'm running all these tests using the latest BDB (v4.6) built from the source on Win2K3 server (release version). The test machine is 1.7GHz P4 with 1GB of RAM and an IDE hard drive. Not the fastest machine, but it was able to handle a log file like described before at a speed of 20K records/sec.
BDB is configured in a single file in a BDB environment, using private memory, since only one process ever has access to the database).
I ran a performance monitor while running SSW, capturing private bytes, disk read/write I/O, system cache size, etc.
I also used a code profiler to analyze SSW and BDB performance.
    The Problem
Small log files, such as 100MB, can be processed in no time - BDB handles them really well. However, once the entire BDB cache is filled up, the machine goes into some weird state and can sit in this state for hours and hours before completing the analysis.
Another problem is that traversing large primary or secondary databases is a really slow and painful process. It is really not that much data!
Overall, the 20K rec/sec quoted above drop down to 2K rec/sec. And that's all after most of the analysis has been done, just trying to save the database.
    The Tests
SSW runs in two modes, memory mode and database mode. In memory mode, all data is kept in memory in SSW's own hash tables and then saved to BDB at the end of each run.
In memory mode, the entire BDB is dumped to disk at the end of the run. First, it runs fairly fast, until the BDB cache is filled up. Then writing (disk I/O) goes at a snail pace, at about 3.5MB/sec, even though this disk can write at about 12-15MB/sec.
Another problem is that the OS cache gets filled up, chewing through all available memory long before completion. In order to deal with this problem, I disabled the system cache using the DB_DIRECT_DB/LOG options. I could see OS cache left alone, but once BDB cache was filed up, processing speed was as good as stopped.
Then I flipped options and used DB_DSYNC_DB/LOG options to disable OS disk buffering. This improved overall performance and even though OS cache was filling up, it was being flushed as well and, eventually, SSW finished processing this log, sporting 2K rec/sec. At least it finished, though - other combinations of these options lead to never-ending tests.
In the database mode, stale data is put into BDB after processing every N records (e.g. 300K rec). In this mode, BDB behaves similarly - until the cache is filled up, the performance is somewhat decent, but then the story repeats.
Some of the other things I tried/observed:
    * I tried to experiment with the trickle option. In all honesty, I hoped that this would be the solution to my problems - trickle some, make sure it's on disk and then continue. Well, trickling was pretty much useless and didn't make any positive impact.
    * I disabled threading support, which gave me some performance boost during regular value lookups throughout the test run, but it didn't help either.
    * I experimented with page size, ranging them from the default 8K to 64K. Using large pages helped a bit, but as soon as the BDB cached filled up, the story repeated.
    * The Db.put method, which was called 73557 times while profiling saving the database at the end, took 281 seconds. Interestingly enough, this method called ReadFile function (Win32) 20000 times, which took 258 seconds. The majority of the Db.put time was wasted on looking up records that were being updated! These lookups seem to be the true problem here.
    * I tried libHoard - it usually provides better performance, even in a single-threaded process, but libHoard didn't help much in this case.

I have been able to improve processing speed up to
6-8 times with these two techniques:
    1. A separate trickle thread was created that would
    periodically call DbEnv::memp_trickle. This works
especially good on multicore machines, but also
speeds things up a bit on single CPU boxes. This
alone improved speed from 2K rec/sec to about 4K
    rec/sec.Hello Stone,
I am facing a similar problem, and I too hope to resolve the same with memp_trickle. I had these queries.
    1. what was the % of clean pages that you specified?
    2. What duration were you clling this thread to call memp_trickle?
This would give me a rough idea about which to tune my app. Would really appreciate if you can answer these queries.
    Regards,
    Nishith.

    2. Maintaining multiple secondary databases in real
time proved to be the bottleneck. The code was
changed to create secondary databases at the end of
the run (calling Db::associate with the DB_CREATE
flag), right before the reports are generated, which
use these secondary databases. This improved speed
    from 4K rec/sec to 14K rec/sec.

Doesn't sound like it.  It sounds like you're being logged-off.
Does your Mac go through the complete Restart cycle -- black screen, gray and/or blue screen momentarily, startup chime, etc?
If you're not sure, do a Restart just to watch the process; the next time the problem occurs, see if it's the same.
You need to know which it is, as these will have very different causes, and different places to look for a solution.
