MacBook mini-dvi problem

Suddenly my mini-dvi port on my MacBook C2D 2.0 GHz White (late 2006) stopped working properly.
When I connect an LCD monitor using mini-dvi to vga adapter there is no signal but when I connect the monitor using mini-dvi to dvi adapter everything works fine. As far as I understand there is something wrong with the analog signal in my MacBook's mini-dvi port because the problem is definitely not in the mini-dvi to vga adapter as I bought a new one and the problem did not disappear.
I would appreciate any help. Is there any way to fix the problem besides replacing the logic board?

By the way, what I also found out is that when I connect display to my MB it even detects the name of the monitor, which can be seen in the display preferences. For example at work I use BenQ FP72E and when I connect it to my MB through mini-dvi to vga I can see the exact name of this monitor in display preferences but still there is no signal on the external monitor.

  • Macbook mini-DVI - DVI - HDMI not working with My 32" Vizio

Okay so my Macbook mini-DVI - DVI - HDMI is not working with My 32" Vizio. I've connected an 18 pin plus one slot DVI to HDMI cable to my 32" Vizio HDTV, this cable is connected to my macbook via a Mini-DVI to DVI cable, this one has 24 pins plus one slot on the DVI side. My Vizio display is blue, no signal, it reads. I'm wondering if the reason it's not picking up the display is the lack of pins on the DVI to HDMI or because I dont have any display options aside from screen size and color on my display menu. BTW I hit the detect display button and nothing happened.... I know I just wrote alot here but hopefully someone will read it and come to the rescue. thanks

Oops, I guess all I had to do was restart my macbook. I feel like an idiot.....all is well.

  • Macbook mini DVI to DVI output problems

    hi
I've been using a samsung syncmaster 22" with my macbook for about a year now with no problems using the mini DVI to DVI connection
then earlier this week i used a different DVI cable to plug my playstation 3 into the screen, when i plugged the computer DVI cable back into the screen lots of red/pink pixels have taken over the screen and when the desk is nudged red lines flash up
i thought it might be either the DVI cable or the mini DVI to DVI adapter and replaced both to no avail, i have also tested all the cables on other screens/with other computers, and tested the screen with my playstation. Screen and cables all work fine so i think it must be some kind of output problem, but cant work out what it could be seeing as nothing would have happened to the port on the actual computer whilst changing connections on the samsung screen
sorry for the long winded post, really wanna know what the problem is here

    Hi cbeth,
    welcome to macbook forum.
For your friend macbook, try to press F7 back and forth to switch between mirror and expanded mode.
Try to update your macbook hardware firmware and software using software updater and repair permission after that...application/utilities/disk utility/repair permission.
Also reset your PRAM and PMU.
Open your friend system preference / display and try to compare and set yours similar to hers, including resolution, color depth, refresh rate.
    Good Luck.

  • Macbook mini-dvi -- VGA projector problems

    Hi
At the school i teach at we have problems hooking up our new macbooks to one of our projectors. We use a mini-dvi --> VGA cable to hook up the projector. The mac recognises the projector and it gets listed under screens, the resolution also changes. But no picture is beeing projected by the projector.
If we use a mini-dvi --> s/video/rca cable it works fine, but the quality of the picture is too low. The projector works nicely with the older macs we have, wich use the mini-dv --> vga cable.
Any toughts on what may be the problem, or what we could try?

I am having the same problem. I have to do powerpoint presentations at college and it was so embarrassing to go up there and my macbook not sync up. It use to work. I even bought a new adapter. It did not fix the problem. All the windows laptops were able to sync up to the projector but mine did not. This one one of the main reasons I bought a macbook. I need to take my work to school and connect to projectors. I am using the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. There appears to be no physical damage. When I click detect displays nothing happens. Now I have to redo everything on windows. Please, I hope someone has a fix for this. I am using the following; 2 GHZ Intel Core 2 DUo, 1 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.10

  • Macbook + mini-DVI to video adapter problems!

    Hi,
My roommate and I both have Macbooks - I got mine in June '06, it's one of the older black 80 gb models and hers is a white 120 gb that she got in August '07. We bought a mini-DVI to video adapter so we could watch DVDs and video files on our TV, but have been having some trouble with it lately. At first, it worked perfectly with her computer, but in the past few weeks has been malfunctioning - when she plugs it in, the default background shows up on the TV screen but nothing else, any windows she has open only show up on the TV if she drags them to the right on her screen until she can't see them on her computer anymore, so we're unable to watch anything fullscreen. Any tips on how to fix this?
Also, the adapter has never worked with my computer - any time I plug mine in, my computer display becomes enlarged and slightly distorted, and on the TV screen is distorted by horizontal lines that move up and down the screen. Any ideas here?
Thanks so much for the help!

  • Macbook Mini-DVI to Video problems

    hello everyone,
i just got the mini-dvi to s-video cable. I connected it to my TV and the picture is fine but there is no sound from the TV, just the macbook. Its getting annoying bcuz my Apple remote is broken and it would be nice to get sound from TV so its easier to control. Any ideas out there pls. I want to enjoy my movies. Thanks

Right, you need to get a cable like this (see link) to plug into the headphone jack on the MB and the audio in on your TV. S-Video doesn't carry audio.

  • MacBook Mini-DVI to HDMI not working on Vizio VO22LF 1080p

I recently purchased a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter so I can hook my macbook to my Vizio 1080p LCD TV. The macbook detects the TV correctly but no matter what I do the TV never detects the macbook on the hdmi input.
Doing some searches I saw discussion of a bug with 1080p that and a trick to get two 1920x1080 resolutions to show up in the display options but it never works for me.
When I connect to my 42" Panasonic 720p everything works great.
    Any thoughts??

This sounds a lot like the problem relating to an Apple disclaimer about the mini driving non-coherent displays which seems to especially affect the original G4 mini. See here under the "Video" sub-section:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP65
The problem is the timing for 1680 x 1050 will often have a dot clock above 135 MHz. There are really only a couple things you can do; one is to use the VGA interface as you have been and the second is to use a program like SwitchRes X to lower the pixel clock and stay with the DVI interface. If you want to go the SwitchRes X route, download and install it (get the SwitchRes X Control Panel version and not the full version of SwitchRes X) and then write back to this thread and I can take you through the steps you need to perform. • Should the MacBook Mini Dvi adaptor click into place?

I had a 2007 white Macbook, which the Mini Dvi adaptor clicked firmly into the port on the MacBook. I then replaced it with a 2008 white Macbook, and the same adaptor doesn't click into place, it's just held in by friction and looks like it wants to fall out all the time.
A similar problem has been posted recently for a Mac Mini:- http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10393614
Does anyone know whether Apple changed the design of the port at some point so it no longer clicked into place, or whether it is a fault which could be repaired under Applecare?

I have an early 2009 White Macbook and my adapter definitely clicks into place. Maybe you have a faulty female socket on theMacbook, cannot seeing them change to be honest, I think there is only 2 types of adapters.

  • Macbook Mini-DVI to VGA...   To 1080p LCD tv

I was interested in buying a new display for my macbook, using the miniDVI to vga.
Then i saw that new TV's have VGA ports on them to act as moniters, and thought.
42" TV... or 19" moniter... hmm
Currently i have the miniDVI to video cord so i can use my TV as an additional moniter when playin games etc.
But its not clear enough to play the games on that screen.. its good for some videos
But text and games its not good at all.
Is the Mini DVI to VGA a good port?
Would i be able to hook it up to a TV or if not a bigger moniter and have it as clear as the display attached to the laptop?
    Macbook
    2.0GHz
    1GB ram
Vid card is just the old standard one when the black/white macbooks were still new.
Not the cool new ones with nice video cards

I have a 40 lcd tv and have my macbook hookuped to it using the mini display port to vga and it looks really good, but i only use it for watching movies. Dedicated monitors are still better for reading text or playing games

  • Macbook, Mini-dvi to video, TVs

I bought the mini-dvi to video adapter to use with my Macbook. I plugged it in and connected it to the TV using the yellow wire. The TV (a Toshiba HDTV) does not display correctly.. it's basically just black, sometimes I can see a little green or whatever.
On my Macbook display, I know it think it is working, since a second display is listed and Spaces shows the extra display as well.
    What do I do?
    THANKSSSS

Since you mentioned your TV is HDTV:
Did you connect the yellow wire to the Composite Video input or the Component Video Input? These are very different, but uses the same connector and cable shape. It sounds like you plugged it in into the Component input.
If want to check my suspicions, plug that yellow wire to the input right next to it, and you will see occasional blues instead of greens. And move it over one more and you'll see occasional reds instead of blues!
The yellow thing from the mini-dvi to Video is composite, but most HDTV inputs are component.
    Here are your options:
    1. Free:
Does your HDTV have a composite input? It might be labeled as standard analogue or something like that. If so, use your yellow cable and plug it into that input instead.
    2. Better:
The mini-dvi to video adaptor also has a S-Video output. Use an s-video cable to connect from mabcook to TV.
    3. BEST:
Does your HDTV have a DVI input? If so, you will get a MUCH better picture if you buy the mini-dvi to DVI adaptor and then use a DVI cable to connect macbook-TV. That will cost you money, but it'll look great.

  • Macbook, Mini DVI to Composite/S-Video and Vizio 32" LCD.  HELP: Resolution

So I bought this adapter to hook-up my LCD TV to the Macbook, and I cannot get the correct resolution for this TV.
"32" HD 1366 x 768 native LCD HDTV" is the Specs.
NOW, I did download SwitchResX, but was unsuccessful in registering the custom 1366 x 768 resolution, the LCD TV simply prompts: "No Signal"
Under 1280x768 the TV does work, but it looks blurry.
    Please Help

The Mini DVI to Composite/S-Video is for use at standard TV resolutions, such as 640 x 480. Fo the full 1366 x 768 try using a DVI to HDMI cable with the Mini-DVI to DVI adapter

  • Can't work with Macbook mini-dvi adapter to s-video out under Windows..??

    hi..
My macbook can work well with mini-dvi adapter to tv out under mac os,but it can't work under windows os..
If anyone's using their Macbook and has any comments please let me know..
    Thanks.
    Richard

Yes, if you can get an s-video cable and plug that into the SCART adapter, that would be better than plugging in composite video.
Clearly, having an SCART connection is not going to "improve" the video going in, you're going to be limited by the lowest quality connection. An s-video connection will provide a higher (but probably not a lot) quality signal than composite video.

  • Monster iTV Link for Macbook- Mini-DVI ports different...

I have been watching movies etc. on my TV through my 14" G4 iBook for the last year using the Monster iTV Link with the mini-DVI end. I recently bought a Macbook and expected to do the same with it, but the mini-DVI ports are a different shape!
I have scoured the internet for some information on different mini-DVI ports but have come up short. Can someone explain why Apple would install a different mini-DVI port on the Macbook? Or not install an S-video?
Regardless of why they did this, I now need a new adapter or Monster needs to make a new iTV Link cable for Macbook. Has anyone seen an iTV link for Macbook? Is there one out there I can use?
I am assuming my other option is to buy the mini-DVI to video adapter, use the audio part of the Monster cable I currently have and get a S-Video cable. However before I acquire more cables and adapters...
Can someone confirm that the the Mini-DVI end of the Mini-DVI to Video adapter is the correct shape (version) for the MacBook.
    THANKS
    Macbook Intel, 14" G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It would appear the Monster guy is confused what cable you got. The iTV cable I bought up on Google has the standard round-din S-Video connector found on 15" and 17" Powerbook G4s of the same generation, but I don't think that is found on the 12" Powerbook. What you need is a DVI to S-Video connector to hook up the iTV cable from all indications.
