MacBook Modem/Internet Help Please!

I have recently purchased a Macbook 1.83GHz. I originally had been provided with a modem (Speedtouch 330) through Virgin Broadband. On plugging this into my MacBook it didnt work. I was told by Virgin that the modem was not compatible with Intel-based Macs. Since then I have been trying to purchase another wired modem (as wireless are expensive) but am worried that other modems will have the same non-compatibility problem. I would really appreciate anyone's help/advice on cheap/good modems that will actually work! Thank you
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4)

I don't think you even need drivers. If you connect the modem to your USB port, then open Network preferences it should notify you that a new port has been detected and ask if you want to open that port. You can then configure the new port as required. This basically should be nothing more than selecting the TCP/IP option and setting the Configure IPv4 to DHCP in the drop down menu. You may need to configure PPPoE depending upon what's required for your DSL connection to the ISP.
Once everything is configured you should turn off the DSL modem and the computer. Then wait at least one minute before restarting.

I cannot retrieve the password for the wifi connection on my imac and so cannot access the internet with my ipad at home.  I have a cable modem. Help please!

If you mean that you cannot remember the password for your WiFi network this will work for you - or it should work if you are the administrator on the Mac.
You will need to be logged in as the administrator on your Mac and you must know the password - Open Keychain Access on your Mac in the utilities folder, click on Passwords. Find the Airport Network Password listed on the right. Double click on it. Click on show password in the the window that pops up. Enter your administrator password when prompted and click allow.
If Keychain is locked - you must enter the administrator password there as well to unlock it and access the password.
If you have set the Mac up for Internet Sharing for the iPad to share the Mac's connection, just create a new network On the Mac with Internet sharing and a new password.

There really isn't any workaround to the cost. You can't get the parts needed to fix it yourself. Only Apple has those parts and they do not sell them to end users.
Sure you could take it apart and clean everything and the screen might start working again but then it might not. Depending on what cause it to stop working in the first place. Like something got shorted out.

My Imac late 2012 running Yosemite does not recognise my Huawei 3g usb modem. itried to install Java bt still it does not although the same modem works with my MacBook pro . any help please

    Hey there mbarikiwa,
If your iMac still has not recognized the usb modem, I would use the troubleshooting for Yosemite USB issues in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
If the device is connected to a USB hub:
Make sure the device and the hub are the same speed. Connect USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices to a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HUB, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hub, and so on.
If the device doesn’t have a power cord and is plugged into another USB device that doesn’t have a power cord:
Try plugging the device directly into your computer’s USB port  or into a USB device that does have a power cord. You might need to disconnect and reconnect the other device as well, if it has stopped responding.
If you have many devices connected to your Mac:
Disconnect all USB devices except the device you’re testing, an Apple keyboard, and an Apple mouse. Make sure that the device is connected directly to the computer, and that any hubs or extension cables are disconnected. If you can use the device now, the problem may be with one of the other USB devices or hubs you had connected to your computer. Try reconnecting them, one by one, to your computer. When you find the device causing the problem, review its documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
Verify that the device appears in System Information:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the Contents list. If the device appears but does not work, review the device’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Restart apps:
Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
    Restart your Mac:
    Choose Apple menu > Restart.
    Check your device’s USB connection
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • Macbook Pro Recovery Help please!!!

I have a Macbook pro i am trying to restore. I have been trying since i got up yesterday. I backed up all my stuff on an external drive, restarted, went into disk utilities, erased Macintosh HD, quit disk utilities, went into OS X Mavericks recovery. It downloaded all my stuff and it went to install. Got a huge Yellow triangle with a "!" in it. Said it couldn't install and to contact the software manufacturer. Tried it again many times, but to no avail. Restarted it and got a folder with a question mark in it, blinking over and over. Restarted again and it went into Internet recovery. Got stuck a few times, but finally downloaded. Now it starts up as Mountain Lion Recovery instead of mavericks. (Was shipped with ML) I have tried to download many times but it starts off as the download being 5H 30Min then gets to 2H 13M and then shoots up to 9H 59Min, then up to 12H 56Min. My internet is not that slow. My connection is (as of typing this) 4.91 Down and 0.68 Up. What just happened is i tried it again. Recovery download got until 2H 18Min and went back up to over 6H. I then quit it, and restarted. Reset the PRam and booted up. Now internet Recovery is my only option. I put in my WiFi password and now it has the loading bar that isn't moving, and shows no time limit. I have restored this same mac before on the same network and it restored without a problem. I do not have disks, nor do I have the OS on a flashdrive. I have googled for hours on end trying to find answers to no avail. Help please!

The nearest Apple Store is 6 hours away from me and it ran out of warranty a month ago (of course ) so i don't know what to do. Just checked my computer and i got the 5010F error. Yay..

  • Won't connect to internet, help please

I am back in my apartment at school and they replaced the cable with just another one, almost the same thing, but the problem is that when i connect the cable straight to my CPU it works fine, but when i plug the cable into my airport express it just blinks amber and it shows the connection and even says i am connected but it won't connect to the internet, please help me. my brother will be here tomorrow and i need to get this wireless setup. thanks so much for the help.

Connect the modem to your Airport Express. Then pull power to both for at least five minutes. Then plug power into the modem and wait a minute. Then plug power into the Airport Express and wait a minute. Then try internet access again.

  • Westell 7500 Wireless modem/router help please.

    Hi, newbie here
I recently purchased a laptop for the first time in my life and I am trying to connect it to a wireless connection, which I have never done as well. I am using a Westell 7500 modem provided to me by Verizon. I did a bit of researched and apparently (if I'm correct) I don't need a wireless router or any other devices to get wireless internet.
If I am correct, I went to my modem's IP address and turned on wireless. I set up and changed the SSID and enabled a pass phrase, and I connected to the network at the bottom right. It connects, but there is no internet connection. What I mean by this is that it connects to the device successfully, but there is a triangular yellow warning sign with an exclamation mark on my internet bar at the bottom right and in my "Network and Sharing center" it says "no internet access."
Am I doing something wrong or do I need to buy an wireless router? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You do not need to buy  a wireless router. the 7500 will do the job! I assume you have windows 7. OPen network and sharing center, manage wirleless networks, do you have any entries for your Verizon  ISP?  If yes delete the entry and go to step 2.
If no go to desktop and press f1 to bring up help -  search for (Setp 2)  "set up wirless network" and let us know if that works for you. Welcome to the forum

  • N97 connecting to Internet help please

I got my N97 on Friday and could connect to the internet fine, but saturday morning came - no internet connection available. I rang my contract provider who kindly told me that becasue the N97 is a new phone they don't have any settings or configurations for the phone yet!
Please please could someone tell me how to get the internet back working.
    Thanks in advance

Maybe your operator´s internet site can help you with that.
I had a similar problem as well and I took the configuration of the N95 and adpated it the my new phone. Of course this can not be done automatically, but has to be done manually.
If you tell us what operator, and from what country, you are, I might be able to help you.

  • Ram stuck in MacBook Pro. HELP PLEASE

Today I bought 8GB ram for my MacBook Pro late 2011 15 inch so I removed the previous ram that came with the MacBook Pro no problem but  when I went to go put the first Ram in I accidentally pushed it to far into the bottom and now it's stuck. What can I do to get it out!!! It's jammed in there tight and won't move i've tried pushing it away from the  back metal part but no luck. If I take it into the Genius Bar will they charge me for it I'm still under warranty It doesn't look like I have broken anything just the ram is stuck . Please help anybody !?

If I take it into the Genius Bar will they charge me for it
Even if they do, it will cost you a lot less than a new logic board, which is what you'll need if you cause damage while trying to extract the DIMM's by force.

  • Broadband line ok but no internet - help please

my broadband died 13 days ago and I'm struggling to get it resolved - any help much appreciated.
I've tested with 4 different routers (2 I had and 2 are brand new), 4 different micro splitters and 3 different ADSL cables.  I've tested on 3 phone sockets in the house and on the test socket on the primary phone socket in the house.... all 4 routers say there is no internet.
D-Link router - says "LCP No Response" when trying to connect (doesn't even get as far as authenticating)
Zeyxl router (provided by ISP) - solid red light indicacting no internet.
Apple Airport Extreme - the airport utility says that no adsl cable is connected...
Belkin N300 Router - solid red light indicating no internet
My ISP are insisting that everything is fine at their end....  The first BT engineer said everything was fine and left... the second BT engineer said that the line was fine but acknowledged there was an issue with internet access...
Any suggestions?  My gut feeling is that there must be something wrong in the exchange but I am starting to feel a little bit caught between ISP and BT.
    thanks
