MacBook no longer connects -- need help!

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but as I was scrolling through posts, I found similar problems that didn't quite apply, but nothing identical.
I bought a MacBook 1.5-2 months ago. Had some initial troubles connecting to my home network, but once I switched protection from WEP to WPA everything has been running fine. Yesterday morning I had to reboot my cable modem, which runs into a Netgear WGR614 v8. That night, when I went to connect via the new MacBook, I got the error that airport could not connect to my network, please try again.
My hardwired G5 Tower connects via the router no problem, and my wife's iBook connects wirelessly no problem. The MacBook was able to connect to someone else's unprotected network no problem, so I know the card in it is still good, as is the router. I checked and the right password was still being remembered.
Any ideas?

Have you tried adding your home wireless network as a "Preferred Network" in your MacBook's AirPort settings?

Not possible, the current version of iTunes only allows syncing via iCloud which the 3G does not support.

  • MacBook no longer connects to T.V. after Thunderbolt 1.2 update

I recieved a 13 inch, mid 2012 MacBook Pro for my birthday on Dec. 20th 2013. A few days later I bought a Nexxtech Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor which was working fantastically for a couple weeks when connecting my MacBook to my Insignia TV. After installing the Thunderbolt 1.2 update, my MacBook and TV no longer connect. The screen on my MacBook will flash for a second like it is detecting the TV, but that's it. I get a "no signal" sign on the TV. I've tried everything I could find on the internet. Resetting the PRAM and SMC, detecting through command + F2, turning off "displays have seperate spaces", and all the little rituals some people have to go through to get it to work. Nothing. I've even tried it on my parents LG TV. Nothing. I'm so ****** off. This was a huge reason I got a MacBook. Seeing that this update came out in May 2013 and people have been having the same issue since then, I'm not hopeful that Apple will be fixing this any time soon.

I also can't get the media sync to connect after the update. I can get the mass storage to work with no issue, but media sync is having issues.
Every time I connect with media sync, Windows 7 pops up a message stating that the driver failed to load and to contact Samsung. So I contacted Samsung support, which was completely useless.
I need the media sync to work because that's the only way I've found to get DRM-protected media files to transfer properly to my Charge. If I copy them to my phone while in mass storage mode, I can't play them because there is a licensing error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • MacBook Pro smell and need help deciding on which MacBook Pro to buy

So I bought a 17-inch MacBook Pro from my brother in August of 2009. He bought it in March of 2008. A couple days ago I noticed that my MacBook Pro has been releasing a really bad smell almost as if burning plastic. But the smell isn't that bad. What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro? I'm getting a New 15 or 13-inch MacBook Pro in June so idk if I should just not worry about it? And I need help deciding if I should get a high end 13-inch MacBook Pro or a low end 15-inch MacBook Pro?

What could be wrong with my MacBook Pro?
Take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check as to the cause of the smell.

  • Transferring files from macbook to imac. Need Help !!!!

Okay i will make this as short as possible. I was using a macbook to do imovie. My father bought a new 27 inch imac. Well I got his 24" imac. Stoked and boy what a difference !! On the old one I used an external hard drive and woking and saving off of that. When I got my new imac, I bought a new external hard drive. First I plugged in my old one to new imac. Transferred movies over. Then plugged in new external hard drive to imac, and put movies on there. I am a videographer for a few surf teams and I was working on a movie and noticed that some sessions were not on there. So I plugged in old external hard drive to macbook and there they were. turned both machines off unplugged both external hard drive. Plugged old external hard drive into imac and they were not there. I am using ilife 11 and am on 10.6.5. Sorry it was so long, just wanted to give all my info to make it easier to answer. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this whether you answer or not, much appreciated.

    Really strange.
I suggest perhaps attaching the old ext HDD to the MB and the new ext HDD to the iMac and connecting the two Macs with an ordinary ethernet cable. Go to Finder/Help menu/Mac Help/Index/E/Ethernet for an article about making a network with two Macs and an ethernet cable. Then go to Index/S/Sharing to find out how to configure your two Macs to share files with each other.
With the network and sharing hopefully you can now see the files that you need on the MB/old HDD and can drag & drop them to the new iMac/new HDD.

  • Transferring iPhoto albums from old macBook Pro to new - need help!

I am using the firewire to firewire connection to create a disk of my old computer on the desktop of my new computer. It is imperative that I transfer my iPhoto data from my old laptop to my new one with all the labels and albums / folders intact. I have 4 years of photographic microscope data from patient laboratory tests on my old hard drive. These folders are labeled with the patient identifiers and the date of test as well as the diagnosis. I need to have these data on my new computer so I can pull up archived photos to compare new results with past ones. However, when I go to transfer the photos from the old computer the images are only available as "raw" data - that is, I cannot access them as they are arranged in my old computer: folders that have albums by date, subject and lab test. The only images that I can access are what is seen when they are originally imported from the camera (e.g. dsc-0001, etc - not my labels, or my tags, my albums or folders: not "Ms Smith, 12-21-06; positive", etc).
Is there a way that I can import my photos from the old computer into the new one and keep my folders, albums, tags, labels, etc? Or are these data destined to be lost to the archives?
    Any help is gratefully appreciated

You should be able to copy your iPhoto library directly to the new computer. It's /Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library. Drag it to the same location on your new computer. Also copy /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iphoto.plist.

How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • Macbook no longer connects to internet

I recently purchased a used Macbook 1.1 with a fresh install of 10.5 and used it for about a month with no problems whatsoever. About two weeks ago I changed locations (I´m currently traveling around) and the Airport would not connect to the new network. It just says ¨Connection Timeout¨ no matter what I do (ie. type in correct password, unsecure the network, try different networks, etc...). At first, I was able to connect via Ethernet to this router, but about a week ago, that also stopped working. And it´s not just that it won´t connect - it gives me the message ¨The cable for Ethernet is not plugged in.¨ I´ve tried everything I can think of. I´ve reset all routers, reset the PRAM, the SMC, reinstalled the OS... it just doesn´t make any sense to me that suddenly these two different pieces of hardware which both worked fine would both suddenly stop working. I´d take it to a Genius Bar, of course, but I am now in the middle of nowhere in Spain and that´s not really an option so any self help suggestions would be most appreciated... Thanks!

Full bars would just indicate that your MacBook is connected to a wireless network. Typically when a computer can connect to the local network but not the Internet means that it is not configured properly to do so.
What may be missing in your computer's configuration is the proper IP address information.
    Go to Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > TCP/IP tab
Configure IPv4 should be set to "Using DHCP," and the IPv4 Address, Subnet Mask, & Router fields should be populated with the appropriate IP addresses for your network.
    Go to the DNS tab
There should be one or more DNS servers listed. These are either the ones provided by your ISP or ones that you set up yourself.

So why don't you search for the documentation? Tomcat is one of the few apache java projects that is actually decently documented.
    http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/jndi-datasource-examples-howto.html
That should be all you need to get up and running. For the correct JDBC settings, the microsoft website has an article, as do many other websites.

  • Low-Res connection, need help.

I've got a 1.25 GHz eMac running OS 10.3.9 connected to a high-speed DSL network (unknown speed) through a Linksys router and AirPort. I conferenced with a new 1.83 GHz iMac running OS 10.4.? connected directly to a "lite" cable ISP (256 Kb download/128 Kb upload speed).
There was no delay, the audio was pretty good, but the video quality wasn't very sharp at all, so I'm quite disappointed. I figure there's a weak connection link somewhere in the specs I listed above. The video was not nearly as clear as advertised, and it was only about 14 fps.
I think the ISP connection speed is probably the problem. How can I check that from my computer?
Any help figuring this out would be appreciated.

Bill, thanks so much for the info. I've been using Macs for over 10 years and there's always something new to learn.
Yes, I'm using an external iSight on my eMac. The other iMac has the built-in iSight, too. I'll save that USB device link, just in case, though. It might come in handy at some point.
I'm forbidden from using the "speakeasy" site, but the other link worked. Here are the specs taken from the free test:
    Communications: 880.5 kilobits per second
    Storage: 107.5 kilobytes per second
    1MB file download: 9.5 seconds
    Subjective rating: Good
It looks like the iMac's 128 Kbps connection is probably the problem. What is the difference between upload and download speeds, WRT the iSight's performance? My guess is that the lower of the two is the limiting factor.
The iMac I conferenced with is my mother-in-law's, and my computer will be left with my mom when I move away in the near future (I just joined the Navy). All I'll need is a new iMac and a decent ISP, then my mom and my kids will be able to use iChat. If my mother-in-law wants to shell out an extra $14/mo. on her cable bill for better connection speed, that's her perogative, ha ha.
Thanks again for the help. I'm much happier now.
