Macbook not charging

I have only had my Macbook since late December of this year and not that long ago I noticed a crack on the left side, on the corner of the charger port. My charger got bitten by my friend's dog not about a week ago and ever since then I've had to wiggle the charger a little bit to get it to work, and usually it would.
Now this morning I had left my macbook on the table and when I woke up I tripped over it (I have problems walking so I fall quite easily)
However, the fall violently jerked my poor macbook to the floor (which thankfully is carpet) and after checking it over my mac seemed to be alright and in good working condition. I did think it was odd though that because my mac charger is magnetic that it didn't automatically pop off like it usually does.
But, when I tried to charge my macbook I noticed that the cord seemed to be wiggling in the charger port and it is very difficult to get a charge.
I am going to go and buy a new charger tomorrow but I was wondering if a new charger would more than likely fix the problem because the fall somehow weakened the magnet or is it more than likely a problem with the mac due to the crack?
Thanks very much
Ivy

The standard power adapter for that generation 13.3" white or black MacBook is the 60-watt Magsafe charger.

Either the T connector or the L connector will work, but some MacBooks might need a firmware update to use the L-shaped connector:

Per other posts in these forums, a 85-watt Magsafe power adapter will work without problems on a 13.3" MacBook, but the larger-capacity adapter was designed for the large-screen 15" and 17" MacBook Pro computers.

    Hi Marlisa,
#1 Your battery should be replaced if it has actually gone through 1128 cycles. Most batteries don't last near that long.
    #2 Reset the SMC

  • Why is my macbook not charging? And how do I fix it?

I bought my macbook in 2008, so it is 5 years old.  Recently, it started to not charge when it is plugged in.  If I hold the charger firm to the side of the port, it charges, but otherwise, it will charge for a few minutes and then quit.  I am not sure what is going on.  I use my computer a lot for school, so I am frantically trying to find a solution for this problem.  Any advice?

Sounds to me like you have a dirty connection between the charger and the macbook. First check that out. Cleaning electronic contacts is best done with a suitable spray cleaner, like this one (no endorsement implied, this link is to clarify not to promote a specific product):
    http://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Spray-Cleaner-Citrus-Scent/dp/B0006ZH9NU
But just in case it's the battery that is at fault, you can check it out with this little beauty (this is a recommendation!):

  • Macbook not charging even after replacing battery

I have a 13" unibody that was having problems charging, and eventually died and would not run off of battery or the power cord. When I took off the bottom of the computer and disconnected the battery the computer would work fine as long as it was hooked up to the power cord. I bought a new battery and instaleld it and the computer worked flawlessly. I decided to recalibrate the battery per the instructions on the apples website and now when I plug the power cord into the computer for normal charging I get the "Not Charging" icon on the top. If I pull the plug it wont shut down it shows that it has a little battery left. The condition shows as normal and coconut battery shows the current charge @ 2%. Everything worked fine 6 hours ago.
    Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: Resetting PRAM did not change anything.
The Magsafe LED is black, no color.

    Thank you for the reply.
I have a new charger coming in the mail so I will see if using that solves the problem. Right now there are 2 macbooks in the family with only one charger as my puppy chewed through he cord on the other one. I tried swapping the magsafe but keeping the same cord (magsafe to computer), but still didn't have any luck.
I think it's weird that I originally could not even power the Macbook on unless I removed the bottom, disconnected the battery and plugged in the power supply. Then when I installed a new battery it worked perfectly with or without the power adapter until I tried to recalibrate the battery.

I'm having the same problem.  I got my battery replaced about 2 months ago because my Macbook Pro (got it in 2008) would keep shutting down after a minute or two of being unplugged, so I figured the battery was on the verge of death.  Last night I noticed that when I had it unplugged the battery life was wavering between 1% and 2%.  I plugged it in and it says "Not Charging".  It was fine a few days ago, showing me a life remaining time.

  • Charger plugged in, but macbook 'not charging'--help! *gulp*

HELP guys, I'm freaking out *+big time+* I just noticed that when I got my macbook plugged in, it's not charging. The icon is the one you got when it's plugged in (with the little fork-shaped thing in the middle), but instead of it saying 'charging' like when the battery isn't full, or 'charged', when it is, it just says 'Not Charging'. It's like it can see the magsafe connector inside, but the juice isn't coming through to the battery, even though the computer itself is powered by the charger since when I click on the power symbol I get 'Power source: Power adapter'.
Also, the magsafe connector itself isn't lit. It used to be green for a bit, but a much weaker green than normal, and before that it wasn't even lit--I've tried with three different wall outlets, one of which was outside my house where I usually use it (it was in a starbucks). Also, when I disconnected the magsafe to get a reading for the battery, it was only 1:35, even though the magsafe light was green (albeit a weak green).
If it matters, I'm running 10.5.3. The macbook is still fairly new, bought mid-december, all updates current as I got it set to checking daily and install the minute I get the notice. Any ideas what could be the matter? Please tell me what it could be if you know, because I am getting really scared something might be wrong! And the worse is we don't have real applestores where i live, so I can't take it there!glp

    UPDATE
Got mine working! I went back and cleaned the magsafe connectors again .
    read tech doc
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303240
Even though mine looked clean and not bent, one of the pins must have been pushed in (which would explain power but no charging)
Also, it took me three times cleaning (I used compressed air, but they say use a soft toothbrush) before it worked for good (the orange light would come on but go out in 5 minutes)
I now have a full charge!
    Hope this helps

  • MacBook not charging after drink spillage?

    Hi,
About a month ago I spilled Drink ( Hennessey and Coke ) Over my laptop. The next day I opened it up and cleaned it with alcohol , also everything looked fine and no damage seen. Tho when I had my Mac up and running I noticed that not all my KeyBoard lights were working and that the battery was Charging VERY SLOW !! I mean it would take about a full day for it to fully charge up.
The rest was working fine. Till one day I forgot to charge my battery and my MAC died. And would not charge up again. So I had to replace my battery with a new Battery from ( Apple store ). So my mac was up and running again tho still charging very slow. Once again i forgot to leave it on charge and it run out of battery and once it dies it just wont start up or charge. I can see the green light tho its very dim.
-I have bought brand new DC PORT and swapped it with an old one did not help , same issue
-I have tried several charges no luck
So basically my mac only works if I have charged up battery and once it dies it just wont boot up. If any of you guys know what could be wrong or how can I fix it any suggestions are welcome & much appreciated !!

You need to take the computer to an authorized service center for assessment.

  • Macbook not charging, Magsafe green, immediate turn off if charger removed

    Hello all
I have had a search for similar issues but found nothing quite the same.
I have a 2009 17" MBP with a 2 month old new battery in it. (not by Apple)
My current battery percentage is at 14% but my Magsafe is showing green to indicate 95% or above. When I remove the Magsafe my MBP automatically turns off like I've forced shut down.
I've looked in 'About my Mac' system report and it shows Battery not charging.
I have contacted the company who supplied the battery as it is under warranty, however, how do I know it is the battery?
I've tried resetting the SMC by using shift-ctl-option-power but it has not solved my problem.
    Any help appreciated!

There are many tales of woe on these forums about installing non Apple batteries.

The green light indicates that it is providing power to the MBP.  It does not mean that the battery is charged 95% or higher.  Disconnect or take out the battery and the charger light will green.
If your charger was connected when you made the image of the battery data, it indicates that the battery is simply not being charged.  The battery may in effect be dead or there is a problem in the charging circuitry.  It would be best to have the MBP evaluated by an Apple store genius bar for a definitive analysis.  The evaluation will be FREE.
My money says that the battery is the problem.
    Ciao.

  • 2008 Macbook Not Charging

I have a 2008 black Macbook. Recently, my orginial charger blew and I ended up buying a new one. Once I received my new charger, I charged the battery and took it off the charger. However, once I went to charge my computer again the charger would not register that it needed charging. So, I thought maybe the battery was dying (as it was the orginial one) so I bought a new battery. I thought the problem was solved as once putting in the new battery the charger immediately recognized the computer needed to be charged. However, I've run into the same problem again. If I unplug the charger it won't charge the computer once I plug it in again (though after a few days it'll charge it again, but if taken off I run into the same problem). Is there a problem internally within my computer (as it can't be the battery or charger since they are both brand new) and has anyone run into the same issue?

Try doing an SMC reset. Failing that, you could make sure that the charging port on the computer is clean and unobstructed.
Next, look at this article and make sure that your firmware has been updated.

  • Macbook not charging - light remains green. Do I need a new battery? (CoconutBattery specs inside)

    Hi everyone,
I just got back from a two week vacation to find that my black  Macbook isn't charging. When I put the charger head into the laptop, the light remains green, and the battery isn't charging. I ran a CoconutBattery diagnosis on the machine and got these results:
    http://i.imgur.com/mMobh.png
I'm not exactly clear on how to interpret these results, but I believe it's saying that the battery doesn't have any capacity for charging. Will buying a new battery solve the problem? I'm not sure if Apple sells the batteries for the older Macbooks now, either.
    Thanks for any help!

  • MacBook not charging. Charging light blinks red and green (very low) than green in normal charge.

My MacBook's battery is dead. When I plug the charge the charging indicator blinks with dim red and green light instead of bright green light. Please help anyone has a solution to it. Last time I remember tye battery was 46%. I plugged in charger and put my iPhone and power bank in charge in Mac USBs. After hours I found that neither phone and power bank was charged nor Mac. Instead Mac's battery was also empty.

  • My new macbook's battery is not charging.

I bought my macbook last April 9, 2011 and after one day I experienced my macbook not charging when I plug it in. I only plug it in when it says that I am running on reserve battery power. I went to a Power Mac Center and they said that I should only be concerned if it happens again. After one week, my macbook was fine until last week it started behaving like this again. My one week warranty is out and I've been trying to reset the SMC over and over again but it continues to happen. Does my unit need replacing or something? Or is there a permanent fix for this?

Forgive me but I have to ask, your MacBook has an integrated battery correct? Is this exactly how you reset the SMC?
Newer Mac portables with a battery you don't remove
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Try resetting the pram also, don't know if it'll help but it won't hurt.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
