Macbook not fully starting up.

My Macbook, which I have been happy with until now, isn't starting up fully. I get past the Apple screen with the clock and the chime, and it starts OS X. I try to log in to my username (Macbook is password protected), and it will show my background, and stop. It will eventually do the rainbow spinning ball thing, and just sit there. It is starting to upset me, because I haven't bumped it or hit it or done anything that would have caused physical damage to it. I installed a new hard drive about 3 weeks after I got it, which was in August, and it has had no problems until now. The RAM is OEM, and I haven't done anything else to the computer. What is wrong with it?
Right now, I'm trying to Repair the disk permissions, and its frozen again, with the spinning rainbow ball. I'm honestly happier with my PC than I am with my mac.

Try running fsck once.
1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
/sbin/fsck -fy
3. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit should bootup normally.
If that doesn't work, the only commercial repair utility that's compatible is Tech Tool Pro. DiskWarrior hasn't been updated. Last resort is a reformat.

  • Ipod touch 3rd Gen not fully starting up - constantly restarting with the apple logo screen

    Hi,
First of all, I cannot get my ipod touch (3rd Gen) to start up so I cannot get model specifics and version numbers - though it is iOS 5.1.1
I have obviously tried to restart it by holding the power and home button for 10 secs but this has not done anything.
At the moment, the ipod switches on and I see the black screen with the white apple logo - this stays on for about 3 minutes, then I get the little spinning circle (but it isn't spinning) for a couple of minutes, before it powers off and does this again... repeatedly. It only stopped because the battery power ran out.
I have connected it to my computer with the latest version of itunes - it appears in the devices list but just has a spinning 'loading' icon and is grayed out.  As my ipod restarts the cycle again as above, my computer makes the noise as if i just plugged it back in and the above happens again in itunes.
The problem began when I updated apps (through update apps in app store) and it froze - I turned the ipod off to restart it, and now this is happening.
Any help or advice extremely grateful... I can't even access it to get it restored which is a bit of a problem as I have work notes on it. (Obviously I don't know if notes are backed up on ipod backups through itunes?)
    Many, many thanks in advance!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Leopard & MacBook not even starting up. . . All messed up . . .

Hi. Im here on behalf of a friend.
There were some problems on his MacBook (saying he didnt have permissions to do basic things) so he took off the permissions for the whole Macintosh HD.
Now his computer will not start up at all. It will turn on but the apple sign and the spinning wheel keeps turning. After 5 mins of this the mac gives up and restarts only to do the same thing again. It will start up in target disk mode and im on my powerbook now trying to sort his computer out.
He has Leopard on his. I have the original Leopard install disk here. Is there anything i can do to make his computer run from Leopard and update it all.
He has tried booting from then Leopard disk but it says that its not the right Macintosh for this disk. . .
    Any advice?
    Thanks for your time. Ben

Hi. When your friend tried to boot from the installer disk, was that the Leopard disk he installed on his computer? Make sure that he is using the disk he installed in his computer. Another option is do a Safe Boot. You can do that by pressing the shift button after hearing the startup chime and keep on pressing it until the OS loads properly. If that doesn't work, you need to boot from the install disk or do a target disk mode and run repair disk and disk permission in the Utilities folder. You can also use Disk Warrior. If all fails, Archive and install while preserving the user and network settings. Good luck.

  • 10.4.8 update causes MacBook not to start

Sits on the spinning wheel after numerous attempts to restart. Had no problem until I installed the update. Is there anything good in ths update? If so, what?
How do I go back to 10.4.7?

My Macbook also will not boot, though it did fine after the update (yes, it did restart twice). The freezing started many days later when a different user logged in. Immediately, beachball. Now it does it within 12 seconds of displaying the login screen. coreservic jumps to 100% cpu usage and the system beachballs. I have remote login enabled so I can troubleshoot this type of thing, but in this case there's nothing that can be done.
I've isolated it, I think, to an issue with the aiport. I can Safe Boot and do everything just fine, until the airport is enabled / attempted to be configured. Deleted all airport and network related prefs files manually via ssh, still no dice. So I figure I'll go back to my 10.4.7 SuperDuper backup...but..get this:
I cannot drag disk images in Disk Utility into the Restore window (yes, I'm booted from the startup disk). All mouse clicks are interpreted as a drag-select, and I am unable to move my source or target into the dialog, and swift thinking Apple put no alternate way to access them via a file browser dialog. Typing in full paths to the Volumes still will not enable the "Restore" button. So wth do I do now?

  • Not fully starting up w/ black screen & no chime

My 15 month old 17" MacBook Pro decided to go to sleep this afternoon and never wake up. Had to hold down the power key to turn it off, but after that point, whenever the power key is pushed, the light immediately comes on in the front and it makes a slight sound (similar to waking from sleep).. no startup chime, and the screen remains black.
I have tried resetting PRAM, Power Reset, changed out ram to the factory stick, and even trying to target disk mode it to my wife's iMac in the hopes I could pull off the most recent data.. to no avail. (wouldn't even show up). I tried to boot from the 10.5 disc and it just got stuck in the machine and wouldnt see it (though I can hear it spinning up in there when I attempt a restart)
I have never seen anything quite like it in my years of dealing with Macs and it has me quite perplexed. I have trolled all the forum posts that include "not starting up" and have tried every trick mentioned. Suspect is the hard drive at this point, but the Logic Board keeps coming up in posts so I am not ruling that out. I have an insurance policy that may cover this but I am trying to revive it before resorting to that (or driving 2 hours to the nearest Apple Store)...
Anyone have any other suggestions? I would try a key on a kite in a lightening storm at this point if I thought it would help (though I suspect that power surges/outages we have had here the last few days are the culprit since it was not even acting any different until a few days ago.. even though I have it on a UPS) Help!

Are you sure the screen is totally black? My Core Duo MBP started up to what I thought was a black screen. when I turned on the overhead lights I could just barely see something on the screen. When I used a bright flashlight I could seee that my desktop was there. The problem was the backlight going out. This is repaired by replacing the inverter.

  • Computer not fully starting up

I have a PowerMac G5, and just recently my computer will start up to the gray screen, yet it will remain there, and usually around 30 seconds later, my fans start blowing like crazy. I have shut off my computer and rebooted it with several different methods: holding down command-V or rebooting the pram my holding down command-option-p-r until the tower restarts but it will all inevitably go back to where I first started- at the gray screen frozen, with my fans making more noise then ever. Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it. Thank You!!!

what would be some reasons why my hard drive/logic board would start dying out of nowhere? Are there any solutions?
Not out of nowhere really, as we ourselves are set to expire at sometime... so is everything else, including Computers, some go longer than others.

  • Could not fully start the application because an unknown error occured

I'm using photoshop 7.0 and my problem occurs with Imageready. I am using Vista, but this has not been a problem for the past year (so I don't think it's Vista related).
I recently created an animation in Imageready and it worked just fine. However, when I returned to use Imageready again, I received the error listed above.
Reinstalling does not resolve this problem. If I do a system restore, I am able to use Imageready again. . . but only one time. after which the same error occurs.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

Any securtity tools or specific Windows updates? Something is most likely suppressing the app. Also check the properties of the executable for ImageReady. It's possible something has reset security permissions or activated DEP for it. Run it in compatibility mode, if need be...

  • Macbook pro not fully charging

My macbook pro is less than one month old and it started not fully charging a few days ago. It was at 97% when the light turned green, and wouldn't go up any more. I always have my keyboard light off & the screen light very dim so don't tell me to lower it. I then decided to calibrate the battery and it charged 100% but I unplugged it for a little bit and it dropped to 99% and will not go up anymore. The charger light is green and it thinks it's fully charged. What is going on?!! this is new!

Thanks for these suggestions: I have tried safe mode re-starts (both "verbose" and simple "shift" + power) to no avail.  I get the error message "disk0s2: media is not present".  Following this I inserted the installation disc and from there ran disc utility.  The "Verify Disk" indicated an error " invalid sibling link" which it could not repair.
I also tried to completely re-format/erase the disk, but again got an error message "disk object invalid or unable to serialize".
Any ideas of what could be causing this or the best solution?  I fear I am fast running out of options.

opps.  Long title there... The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted those.  Checked for software update and installed suggested downloads.  Problem still contintues.  Any suggestions?

    Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?
    Thanks and best regards.

70 hours...  no, it's not normal but it can't hurt your Mac to be running for that amount of time.
