MacBook not going to sleep and getting very hot

I just purchased a MacBook and have been using it for a few days. I have noticed that it does not appear to go to sleep correctly and gets very hot in the process. I finished working on my MB about 45 minutes ago. At the time it was connected to the mains and I disconnected to catch my next train. I shut the lid and after a few minutes the sleep indicator light at the front dimmed once then stayed on permanently. I could not hear the drive spinning (though the drive is quiet on this machine and there was a lot of background noise) and assumed all was OK. Anyhow, I have just taken the MB out of its case some 45 minutes later and it felt extremely hot (almost too hot to touch, I would guess around 50ºC). The sleep indicator light on the front was solid white. I opened the lid and the machine woke up. Something not right here....Also power remaining was down to 72% so something has been using up a lot of energy and heating up the aluminium!
Tony
ps. Whilst writing this email the MB has cooled down considerably but still warm.
ps2. Probably not related, but I have firmware password protection enabled
null

I did see some of the other posts, but nothing about the MB getting so hot.
I tried sleep from the menu and this seems to work (though I have rebooted the machine since the above report).
What worries me is the potential fire risk/damage to the MB, the case was extremely hot.

  • MBP not waking from sleep and getting very hot

When my Mac Book Pro 15 inch is left for a period of time greater than approximately an hour and plugged in it should automatically go into sleep/hibernate mode. Something happens during this period but I can hear the fan running heavily, the MBP is very hot and I can do nothing to wake it. The only option I have found is to hold the power button down for a few seconds to power the unit off then back on. When the MBP restarts I am greeted with the message "The computer was restarted after Mac OX X quit unexpectedly". I have also seen many kernel panics occurr on a regular basis. This is a new Mac Book Pro and was recently sent back to Apple for diagnosis. I was told it was my third party memory but upon instaling my original Mac memory the problem is STILL present.
Anyone else seeing or heard of this type of behavior???

Hi, I am having the sleep problem with my 17" MBP. When I shut the lid down and it goes to sleep mode for short periods it is ok but any period for longer than 1 hr it will not wake when I lift the lid or press any keys on the keypad. It was also turning itself on and going into sleep mode when I left it to charge overnight from a turned off state untill I sent it for repair. Now it just has the sleep problem, what I have noticed is that it does not play up when I start it up in Safe mode. I have just done the hardware test from the install disc and there were no problems, then I did the archive/Install bit and that did not solve it either. Ah well back on the phone tomorrow unless someone can shed any light!

The Warranty duration is the Warranty of the Original iPhone. If that Warranty has now lapsed, then the replacement has a 90 day Warranty from when you received the replacement iPhone.

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • MacBook not going to sleep when connected to WiFi

    Hi there,
my MacBook 3,1 is not going to sleep as long as it is connected to WiFi.
It starts the process of going to sleep as my VNC connection gets dropped but it stays awake. I can easily reconnect.
Everthing else is working fine. Any suggestions?

    Hello everyone,
I'm facing the same syptom. I tried many things and now havw to live with putting the MacBook to slee by hand. I had some other issues just before that:
1: The MB returned randomly from sleep while being closed. That was annoying. I think it was fixed after installing smart sleep and doing some cleanup in the preference files.
2: Then I was put "randomly" to sleep. I figured that came from overheating the processor (thus I'm gld it went to sleep). The fan speed control was set to constantly 2000 rpm. Installing fanControl helped.
3: Lid closing did not init the sleep mode and the backlight is not turning off. Niether does it wake up on opening when I put it io sleep manually (I have to press a key).
The sensor for closing the lid seems to work, if it is the same which controls the maximum brightnes of the sleep indicator light (pulsing). It is darker when the lid is closed.
I wonder if there is some settings tool.
Besides I think the issues started after the Software updates around 12th of dec. 2008, with MacOS10.5.6 and the EFI & SMC firmware updates.
    I'm eager to get answers.
    Kid regards, Ralf.

  • My iPhone 3GS will hold a full charge for only a short time, and gets very hot when not in use in my shirt pocket.  Any ideas?

My 3GS iPhone will not hold full charge for very long.  It gets very hot in my shirt pocket even when hot in use.  Any ideas?

Double-tapping the home button does not show apps that are running.  This is not a task manager, it is merely a list of recently used/accessed apps.
Basic troubleshooting of the device is reset, restart, restore.  Has a reset or restore been tried?
Check to see if updates exists for the apps, this could be a simple issue of a badly coded or buggy app that needs to be updated.

  • Charger making noise and getting very hot...

My MacBook White is only six months old. The external charger that came with it is getting very hot and making a low but audible buzzing noise. The heat takes an hour or so to really build up to the point where I can't touch it. It used to get hot if I left it plugged in for many hours, but never like this! This particular problem just started happening today and I'm not sure if it is safe or not to use. Has anyone had this problem? I am afraid to call AppleCare and have them tell me that it isn't covered by warranty, etc. etc.

no no, that's not cool at all! call apple, it's covered. you don't have applecare unless you paid for it & the 1 year std warrnty will still cover this.
if you get them called now, they will likely have a new one to you by tomorrow.
pick up applecare before the year is up, it's worth it.

  • My MacBook Pro with Retina display is getting very hot, is this normal?

I recently downloaded Counter-Strike Global Offensive and Minecraft on my Mac, and after about a minute of playing one of these games, my Mac would get very hot right above the keyboard. The fans get very loud and it seems a bit unusual, Is this damaging my Macbook pro?

Use it and keep it on when it gets very hot take it to your local Apple Store you might be successful and receive a new one, because the unit has to have some type of defect. Take your receipt if you still have it.

  • E4200 quitting every 15 to 24 hours and getting very hot

I purchased an E4200 from a retail store about ten days ago.
It completely quits periodically. Even the managment interface is gone. It seems to just die. The only fix is to unplug it, count to ten and plug it back in.
The router also gets extremely hot. I have tried locating it in several places, no matter where I put it, it still gets very hot. Right now I have it straddling a trash can so that it has about two feet of air space under it. It is still uncomfortable to the touch.
When I contacted technical support all they would do is walk me through setting it up from scratch again. I've done that many times, and I do not want to do it agian. Setting the router up agian will not make it cool down.
    Should I:
    1. Exchange this for another one, probably from the same batch, at the store?
    2. Fight with Linksys tech support to get a waranty return? (Any input on how to get them to do this?)
    3. Return this router altogether (paying the retailer's 15% restocking fee) and look for another brand?
    Any thoughts or opinions?
    Thank you

Unfortunately even turning it upside down and a local cold snap were not enough to "fix" this router.
It did stop completely locking up. I could always get to the web interface.
However, the WiFi still quit accepting clients after a day or two. The radios were still broadcasting the SSIDs, but all clients were kicked off and could not connect.
Very dissapointing. I have read other reviews that also say the radios quit periodically. I wish Linksys would figure that out and/or at least offer real tech support who could work with me on my actual problem and not just read scripts to me about how to reset the router.
I took the router back for a full refund from the retailer. I am impressed that I could get a full refund. If I hear that Linksys acknowledges and fixes this problem in the future I will probably buy another one.

  • Macbook not going to sleep :)

So I decided not to buy a desktop machine like an iMac instead I want to buy a bigger screen, a wireless keyboard and mouse and get everything connected to my MacBook,
I am able to see what ever is on my MacBook screen on the new screen, but in order to do that I have to leave my MacBook open, cuz if I close it it just goes to sleep, is there a way to over-ride that?
To close my MacBook but still have picture on my other screen and still use my keyboard and mouse? wireless and everything?
I know it can be done I just don't know how.
    _abe

Well you want it to go to sleep first when you close it. However, after that happens just press a button on the keyboard or click the mouse to wake it (must make sure that wake up for bluetooth devices is checked in your keyboard and mouse bluetooth tab).

  • IPhone 4 is not holding a charge and is very hot

I charged the phone all night and it only shows a 47% charge.  Plus the phone is very hot to the touch.  Has anyone else had this problem and what's the remedy?

Bring your phone in for battery diagnostics.

  • Late 09 MB Pro 13" now on Mountain Lion keeps crashing (spinning wheel) and getting VERY hot. Even Safe Mode slow to work. Managed a back up last night and wondering should I put the original ios disc back in to take it back to SL. Advice appreciated!

    Hi
For past year or so my mac book has been getting gradually worse. Spinning wheel, and overheating, last night I had trouble just getting it to start in Safe Mode (been using the on/off button a lot lately!)
Problem may be related to media - iMovie followed by iPhoto are the most likely programs to bring everything to a stop but not always.
I'm not an expert although I did figure out how to re install the operating system from the partition with help from this forum a couple of months ago but it didn't fix the problem.
The iOS is Mountain Lion (via Lion)
I managed to do a back- up last night and now wondering if I should re- install Snow Leopard from the original discs that came with the laptop.
Got a lot of media on there (replaced the 250gb drive with a  Samsung 1tb a while back which is less than half full.
Never had to use any of my back-ups before so:
If I re install the original operating system will I be able to be selective in what I put back on later?
    and -
Will there be any issues putting a Mountain Lion back-up into a Snow Leopard iOS?
A lot of whats there isn't needed but don't want to lose it completely.
    Advice appreciated thanks

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU|I/O' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.
If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info End **
there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely.

  • Laptop running slow and getting very hot

I have had my macbook pro for a little over two years I have noticed a significant decrease in spead and the unit is now starting to get hot when in use, any suggestions on how to improve the performance and address the heating issues. Thanks

Your 2009 model and especially the 13" MPB really isn't a good match with 10.7 IMO.
Go over this page and report back what you tried and any info, perhaps we can narrow it down.

  • Macbook pro goes to sleep doesn't wake up...noticed the light on the power cord not on...

My MacBook Pro goes to sleep and this time will not wake up. I hold the start button down for count of 10 without results. I noticed the light on my power cord isn't on...and I've jiggled the cord and plugged it into a working outlet. Help!

All Apple laptops will go to sleep when the battery gets low, during this sleep you will not be able to wake it up.  based on what you are saying, to me it sounds like the battery is low because your power supply failed.  I would recommend either barrowing power supply from a friend, or bring it to the apple store, that way you can test it with a good power supply, it that is the case, replace it.

  • Macbook can get very hot!!!

Ok I've been having this problems every single day. Everytime I used my Macbook for about 2 hours, it gets very hot. Is it because its summer? What do I have to do to stop this?
Also, when it gets really hot, my macbook just starts freezing and the fan is going very fast that its very very hot.
Should I have my AC on or at least my fan next to my macbook?
    KK any suggestions please... Thanks

Go to System Preferences - Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor and check what app is using CPU. Try to quit this app and check the difference.
Also, what size of RAM do you have ?
