  • Which VISTA for MacBook (not Pro) 2GB 160GB HD w/Paralells

QUESTION: Can MacBook handle BUSINESS or ULTIMATE VISTA?
    BACKGROUND:
-- I am buying new Core 2 Duo Macbook (not Pro) with 2GB Memory and 160GB HD (currently have original Core Duo Macbook)
-- This will be 'virgin' machine (no Windows OS or Boot Camp or Paralells on machine yet)
-- For my needs I would normally buy VISTA HOME PREMIUM
-- But VISTA legal (End User Legal Agreement) forbids use of BASIC or HOME PREMIUM versions on virtual maChine (like PARALELLS) -- Blog on PARALELLS website confIrms this
-- So must use BUSINESS or ULTIMATE Version legally
    QUESTIONS:
    1. Can Core 2 Duo MacBook 2GB 160GB HD Handle these larger VISTA versions?
    2. Can original Core Duo Macbook with 2GB do so?

I think that's answered. You can allocate as much of your 2 GBs to Parallels as you want provided you maintain sufficient RAM for OS X. So, if you allocate 1 GB to the VM that's sufficient for Vista.
    Question answered.
Now, for Parallels specific questions regarding installing or running Vista you will find help at http://forums.parallels.com.

  • 3ds max on a MacBook (not pro)

    Hi,
i’ve been thinking of purchasing a MacBook (not Pro) but i do need 3ds on it I know that I would have to run it through windows but would the MacBook have good enough specs to run it?
    Here are the MacBook specs:
    * 2.0GHz or 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
    * 4MB shared L2 cache running at full processor speed
    * 800MHz frontside bus
    * 1GB (two 512MB SO-DIMMs) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300); two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB
I would appreciate any advice and especially some from people that have tried or are currently running 3ds on their Mac via Windows…
    Thank you people

I've got basically the same spec, only 2GB ram, and run Max on the Windows side.
You shouldn't have a problem, but it TOTALLY depends on the complexity of your scene. If you're trying to do any sort of serious shader work - with either VRay or Mental Rar - you're going to be waiting a long time for your renders.
That's what it really gets down to - render times. The MacBook just doesn't have the horsepower for serious Max use, but should get you by for light work. These days, anything but a dual, dual core - or dual quad core - just isn't acceptable.
Also, 1GB or RAM is a bit light.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the applications Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. They make a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive. http://www.bombich.com/index.html or http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • How to reset my mid 2008 macbook (not pro)

i have just upgraded to a macbook pro and have already migrated all my data and settings from my old macbook.  i want to reset the macbook mid 2008 (not pro) to factory settings so i can give it to my son.  i do not have any installation discs as each time i upgraded i did so via download.

The Aluminum Unibody is a Late 2008 not a Mid 2008. the Mid 2008s were the white or black plastic MacBooks.
You don’t want to update to the newest OS if you are going to give your MacBook. 10.6 Snow Leopard was the last OS to come on a DVD so it could be installed on any Mac. 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks are only available as downloads. So if your son wants to reinstall 10.7 or 10.8 they need your Apple ID and password. It’s better to install 10.6 and let them update to the latest OS using their own Apple ID. Be sure to include the 10.6 disk when you give it to him.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. After you’ve installed that then use the 10.6.8 combo updater to finish it off. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
For 10.7 Lion you can get a redemption code to use in the App Store here. You can get it for $19.99. http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
For 10.8 Mountain Lion you can get a redemption code to use in the App Store here. You can get it for $19.99.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lio
10.9 Mavericks is available in the App Store for free.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion or 10.9 Mavericks without going through 10.7 Lion or10.8 Mountain Lion as long as you have the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1.

  • Cannot connect LG monitor to my mac pro running bootcamp

Any ideas why I cannot connect my LG monitor to my Mac Pro which is running Bootcamp?

I have managed to connect this old monitor using a DVI to VGA connector and a vga to BNC adapter.
This gives me a picture but as the max resolution of the broadcast monitor is 1024 x 768, its a pain because if i select "mirror" in display prefs, the mac screen resolution looks horrible at the same settings as the monitor. As the monitor is clearly old and has no 16:9, Hd or decent inputs, am I better off just going out and buying a decent plasma/lcd screen with HDMi inputs and use this to check approximate colours etc?
I realise that its not the same a fully fledged HD Broadcast monitor but none of the footage is for broadcast. It is for DVD (of which most surely watch on a flat screen tele nowadays or streamed over the net.
    What you you reckon guys?

  • My new MacBook won't run last.fm/audio scrobbler!

My first MacBook never had a problem with running last.fm/audio scrobbler. But I have tried downloading it on my replacement three times already, and it just doesn't open - it keeps quitting unexpectedly. I have tried to open it on 10.4.6 and 10.4.7. Is this a sign of worse things to come? Why isn't it working on this one but it worked on my older one?

Try downloading the 1.0.0 beta and then letting it update to the current version:
    http://static.last.fm/client/Mac/LastFMMac1.0.0.1b.dmg
That solved it for me, oh and there seems to be some issue with iTunes open for some people, so you can try quitting that first.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and Macbook (not Pro)

Curious to know if anyone has any experience running Final Cut Studio 2 on a non-pro Macbook. Can Macbook handle Final Cut Pro alright? Is video memory an issue?
    Thanks,
    Mbs

For the record, Motion will run on a MacBook. It's just that some of the features aren't supported, and will produce incorrect results. So I wouldn't rely on it.
Final Cut, however, works perfectly. No problems at all.

  • Macbook (not pro) Core Duo power management

    Hey,
I pretty new to Arch, but not new to linux. I fell in love with Arch the first time I booted it of the CD for installation.
I decided to install Arch on my macbook, because I need linux for work. It works well, I don't have fan-speed problems or touchpad problems, but I do have power management issues. I have install and configured CPUFREQ, laptop-more, acpid and kpowersave and I made sure that all of those daemons are running and working. Powertop reports that with turned down backlight the wattage never drops below 17.8 which is too high. OSX uses about 11.
Now I expect the wattage to drop to 11watts but I just don't understand what hardware is causing trouble. Even with the pure, standard installation of ARCH I still get 17-18 watts of power consumption without any programs running (except for cpufreq and backlight-control).
It's driving me completely nuts. I recompiled kernels with all kinds of patches. Please, someone help me!
    Kenny
P.S.: Now I heard that the new version of ubuntu uses fewer watts... what the hell is that all about??!

CPU freq-scaling is working perfectly. I included cpufeq-info output while idling (doing absolutely nothing) and compiling a Kernel. The ondemand governor scales each CPU individually; sometimes CPU 1 is at 1.67 - 2.0 while CPU 2 is at 1.00 and visa versa every other second.
I don't think frequency scaling is the answer to this problem I'm having. I think it's other hardware that is not properly supported by this flavor of linux at the moment. Here is a list of things I looked at:
    1. Bluetooth - subsystem removed from kernel; no modules running/installed that would interact with this piece of hardware
    2. Touchpad - Mactel patch removed the high number of interupts
    3. Wireless - uses about 1.7 - 2.2Watts; I don't want to/cannot turn this one off!
    4. Graphics - Intel 950G on board; xf86-Video-Intel driver installed. I know about the DRI issue eating up Watts. Would like to keep this on because of compiz. about 1.5 - 1.9 Watts... unsure about this one.
    5. iSight Camera - No drivers installed, not activated??!?!
    6. FireWire - Doesn't make a difference. Nothing attached to any of the ports!

  • MacBook (not Pro) cannot NetBoot

Seem to have problem to boot up a MacBook with a netboot image. The image (10.4.6) is booting up fine any MacBook Pro, iMac and MacMini computer, but when trying to boot MacBook something is wrong with the display.
Also, in the Tiger Server, the model filtering tab in the Server Admin does not contain the MacBook. Only the iMac, the MacMini and the MacBook Pro.
Does anyone knows what are the files (display drivers?) needed for the MacBook to work?
    Thanks in advance
    Kostas Backas

Something changed it appears in Server 10.4 and using System Image utility.
The previous version of server, 10.3, the NetBoot image that is created is only a few hundred MB in size. Now the install image is embedded in the .nbi folder in the Library folder under NetBootSP0 and can weigh in at over 4 GB. I have one image that is HUGE, 30 GB.
Does this mean we can delete the original disk image of our Main or perfect Macs? Do we need both images to save server space? I thought the install image was a minimal disk image that the computer uses to boot from and not the entire disk image.
    Any thoughts?

  • Correction : How does Macbook (not PRO) compare to G4/800 Quicksilver

I currently have a G4/800 Quicksilver Powermac with 1Gb of memory, two 7200rpm hard drives, and a ATI RAdeon 7500 GPU with 32Mb of RAM.
I mainly use my computer for amateur photograph editing (Photoshop elements) and video-editing (imovie and Final cut express), and I play the occasional game (older games like wolfenstein, medal of honor, warcraft 3). I've read a lot on this forum about how crappy the GMA in the macbook is, but to give me an idea, how does it compare to my equally crappy ATI radeon 7500 ? Would the macbook be ok to play games like C&C generals, Homeworld 2 and other 3D strategy games ? I like the occasional 3D shooter but I don't need the graphical splendour of Quake 4. And I've read that Final Cut pro has some issues with the macbook but I suppose Final cut express would be ok ?
How would the 2Gh Macbook compare to my G4 Quicksilver speedwise overall (I would max out the ram in the macbook) ?

    Well lets compare the two.
    Old mac New mac
g4/800 mhz 2ghz intel core duo
    1gb ram 1gb (minimum)
    7500 gpu 32mb Intel GMA 950 64MB
Not only does the processor in the macbook easily outperform the g4/800, but the new gpu offers double the mb and I belive the processor within it is better aswell.
If you was to max out the ram, to say 2gb this will improve gameplay/editing extremely. The limiting factor here will be the graphics, but Im sure it will do the job.

  • What do you do if you Macbook (not pro) says 'Connection Timeout'?

My macbook say 'connection timeout' when i tyr to connect to my netgera Wifi. i have connected other computers to it and it worked fine. I need help QUICK

    Sam here. Netgear router.
Both my black MacBook (10.6.8) and MacBoook Pro (10.6.8) started showing the exact same problem around the same time.  The MacBook Pro can connect to my company's wifi w/o any problem.
I first suspected that the Netgear router is disintegrating, but my Android phone, Kindle and Lexmark printer can connect to the router via wifi w/o a problem. It's only Mac-Netgear that doesn't work.
Sometimes the wifi connection icon shows a normal connection with strongest signal, but 90% of the IP packets drop, according to the result of ping command.  Strange.

  • I have an '09 13in MacBook (not pro) and my charger got so hot it melted the plastic on my mb above the charging port.

It not longer charge at all I tried other chargers which also did not work and its completely dead. Does anyone have any possible solutions? I took it to a repair shop and they were going to replace the port where you plug the charger to, but I wanted to know if that was actually the problem before I go shelling out money for it to not even be fixed.

Thanks my boyfriend actually took my MacBook apart since the rubber bottom was already gone. He removed the MagSafe port and were getting a new one along with a new charger and hopefully this fixes my problem. I didn't think he was actually going to be able to take the thing apart since most need special tools.

the hard drive storage capacity can be increased to as large a hard drive as you can find that will fit.  I believe it is currently 1.5TB.
