Macbook not sleeping

OK - My macbook will not go to sleep based on the Energy Saver settings. Like if I have it to sleep after 10 minutes, it just doesn't go to sleep. If I close the lid or power button --> sleep, it sleeps fine. This happens with BT off/on, Airport off/on, no apps running...
I have moved the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file and rebooted, recreating this file, reset the PMU and PRAM/NVRAM all with no go.
Anyone else have any ideas?
I am running the latest and greatest updates.

  • Any fix for a macbook not sleeping/shutting down?

I have an early 2009 macbook running OSX 10.8.  If I close the lid or manually select sleep/shutdown it works fine, BUT whenever I plug in my iphone to sync or charge, the macbook does not respond to a sleep/shutdown command (whether manual or by closing the lid).  I cannot be the only person this is happening to.
Is there a fix for this?

    Hi Jeff_C99,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

  • Macbook Pro 13" will not sleep when I shut the lid

    Hello Community,
This is my first time using the forum. I have a macbook pro 13" 2009 model. Recently I had my MBP connected to an external monitor. I shut the lid while it was connected to the monitor and forgot to turn off my bluetooth mouse. Later that night the mouse was bumped, waking my macbook and setting it to clamshell mode. I put it to sleep again, opened the lid and woke it, but the LCD on the laptop did not turn on. I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM with no luck. I disconnected the monitor, rested the P/NVRAM and it would boot with the laptop screen and once everything was loaded my screen went black and then went to sleep on its own. I tried powering on and off using the P/NVRAM key commands...and nothing. So I opened the bottom case and physically disconnect the battery, reconnected the battery, put the bottom plate back on and powered it up. The screen began working again, now I have a new problem, the MBP WILL NOT sleep when I shut the lid anymore. I even reinstalled the OS and still no luck? If anyone has anything helpful that I could try to get this feature working again it would be much appreciated. If there is some terminal command I could try or some other troubleshooting method. I even put a magnet by the right side of the keyboard to try to trigger the sleep switch.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I resolved my issue in a very unlikely way. In my earlier post I mentioned that I wiped my hard drive and was starting from scratch. Well I reinstalled windows 7 through bootcamp and it fixed my sleep issue. That's right folks...Windows fixed my mac. I think that it was an EFI issue. I think this because windows 7 uses EFI and during installation it must have reset the sleep values to normal. I feel when you reinstall Mac OSX the EFI partition on the drive should get wiped and reinstalled as well. I also feel that apple should have an option within System Prefs for the user to select what the way is that the computer responds when the lid is shut instead of the ritual of trickery and problems that the clamshell mode can cause.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • MacBook will not sleep automatically since Snow Leopard install

Hello. I am having a serious issue with my MacBook since upgrading to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. My MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, 2.4 GHz) will not go to sleep automatically anymore. If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu it will sleep fine. However, it will not sleep according to my Energy Saver preference pane which says sleep at 1 min each (Display and Computer). Another thing to keep in mind is that my display sleeps perfectly normally. However, the computer itself will not sleep.
Here are the things that I have tried so far:
    - Reinstall 10.6.2 combo updater
    - Remove Energy Saver preferences and entire System Configuration folder
    - Made sure that no hardware or software is interrupting sleep
    - Reset PRAM and SMC
I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2 with ALL updates and firmware installed.
Please help me figure this out as it is a serious issue. Thanks.

  • Macbook not waking up from 'sleep'

    Hi there,
I got an really annoying Problem with my 4-Month old Macbook Pro and I hope you guys here can help.
My Macbook Pro does not wake up from sleep, the sleep indicator is solid and not pulsating at all.
The strange thing is, when I initiate Standby the sleep indicator is pulsating, also I can wake my mac up. So my macbook is not waking up if it goes to sleep by its self.
In Addition it is possible to wake my macbook up few seconds after it automatically goes to sleep.
But if is goes to sleep automatically and I don't touch it for few hours I cannot wake it up again.
I already did a PRAM, SMC reset. no change.
Maybe I should mention that my macbook pro is hooked up on an external Display. But not directly connected, there is a kvm switch in between. So I can switch between PC1(PC1Display) & MAC1(PC1Display+MAC1Display) Configurations.
any ideas what the problem could be?
    Thanks, TimmyX

I seem to be having the problem as well.
Occasionally when waking it will work. the machine wakes up to a white screen and a little progress bar at the bottom. then the screen comes back.
other times the screen stays black. it seems the computer itself is not sleeping but the screen is black and the Fkeys don't work to either to either change the dim settings on the monitor or keyboard.
I usually have to force shut down the computer to get it back.
I tried the fix I found online about turing off the ethernet port then re activating it after a restart and that seemed to work.
Then I updated to 10.6.2 (using the combo updater NOT software update) and the problem is back.
I now have done the ethernet off and on fix again. I hope it will wor.
I have found a lot opf people with this problem...
I did a clean install of 10.6 and then used migration assistant for my files and prefs... but not my applications since I was migrating from a powerbook g4.
Maybe some pref or setting that was migrated for many of us is causing it...
Are there others with the problem who are on a NEW mac without any migration?
Hope we can help get to the bottom of this.

  • Macbook will not sleep automatically

    Hi
I've recently noticed that my Macbook will not sleep automatically, even when the power management is set to sleep at minimum (1 minute).
It will sleep if I do it via the menu, however if I walk away from the machine with the lid up, it just won't go to sleep.
I've tried switching everything off that could possibly be running in the background, tried from a new user account and also tried a power management and zapped the P Ram.
Up until a few weeks ago it's been running fine, don't know what's happened since, any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Kiran

Thanks, i've pasted below some of the text that was shown in 'Console', the last line was repeated several times so i've only copied it once.
I have no idea what this means, except there is some sort of error, how would you suggest I proceed.

  • MacBook Pro will not sleep when charging and display is closed.

    Hi,
My Mac will not sleep when it is charging. When I close my display, it will not sleep.
When I unplug the power cable, it sleeps...
I've tried to reset the SMC, and I think i did, the charger went from green to red etc different colours..
Does anybody know what this might be?
    thanks

    AIGHT GUYS!
This is how to fix it, and i guarantee u its 90% the cause.!
first of all, if you are a lion user (most likely all of you with this problem) go to system preferences, and then to sharing. turn all sharing OFF. especially printers....
open a terminal, and type in :
    pmset -g assertions
This will show u if somehting is preventing ur mac from sleeping. on the left colomn, it should say "PreventSystemSleep" and on the right colomn a number. mine was one, which is probably the same for you guys.
Go to system preferences > Print & Scan > Open Print Queue. Make sure all the printing queues are empty and nothing is in there. You do not need to pause any or anything like that just make sure nothing is in the queue.
Close your macbook lid and look at ur light it should be sleeping. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR U
took me long enough to find out.
dont hesitate to ask me any questions

  • HT1776 MacBook does not sleep when closed

I have a Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro running Mavericks.  Sometimes when I close the lid, it does not sleep or turn off the display, even after the set time in Energy Saver preferences.  My main concern is that I have my security settings set to lock my computer 5 seconds after sleep/turning off the display, and this does not happen, as it does not go to sleep.  The only way I notice is that when I open the computer some time later, the screen is already on and it is not locked.  There are no periphials connected when this happens.

Sleep - Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    Sleep - Won’t

  • How can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

how can i get my macbook pro too stay on and not sleep when lid is closed?

If the machine is asleep, lid closed, and you plug in to an external monitor and an external USB keyboard, the machine will wake, anbd reconfigure the screen resolution for the external monitor, Once it has made this configuration change, you can open the lid and it will continue to address only the external monitor.  At least that's how my early MacBook Pro unibody 13" works. It seems to run a bit cooler this way. It gets quite toasty with the lid closed while doing anything demanding and you are more likely to hear the fan come on.  I have not seen any temps that would cause alarm, but I do get a high speed (6000 rpm), noisy fan sometimes with the lid closed, .
If you operate in the open-lid, external monitor only mode, if you deactivate the monitor for any reason, when it reactivates it will be running both screens, with all the navigation hassles this entails, so I generally set it not to deactivate the screen when in this mode.
Thus I agree with those who say that some of the cooling air is drawn in around the keyboard, the difference in cooling performance is observable.  If you activate istat pro, get the computer hot running in clamshell mode, and open the lid, you can watch the CPU temp drop by a few degrees C within a couple minutes.  It isn't a huge difference, but enough the lower the fan speeds.

  • MacBook Pro NOT sleeping properly anymore, and getting hot.

My MacBook Pro does not sleep properly anymore, and gets really really hot, anytime I send it to sleep either by closing it or by selecting "sleep" from the menu. It also loses all its battery really fast while on this state (even faster than while being awake and being heavily used).
It started a while ago only, or at least it was not there from the begining. I had never before had to put off a MacBook Pro, except while flying... I always just close them and they sleep after a few seconds; BUT I can not do like that anymore with my new MacBook Pro... I have to save, close and shut down... then turn on, open my apps, and open my files... its not something to be happy of... I'm very sad with this problem and I have been unable to find the reason for the sudden change.
Please I need help with this.

An additional detail I forgot to mention:
Everytime I tell my MBP to sleep, or just close it, the computer does not seem to go off (because of the levels of the sound of the HD and of the fan), though the screen goes off correctly.
Now, the strange part is that everytime I "wake it", the screen goes on immediately, asking for my password, and after inputing it correctly the screen goes COMPLETELY OFF for 2 seconds, before "coming back normally".

  • MacBook Pro (June 2010) freezing with screen turned off (not sleep)

    Hi.
This issue has happened to me two times now. I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13 inch and the problem has happened when I let the computer sitting there without moving anything with its lid opened, after like 20 minutes when i'm going to use it again it has the screen turned off, the fan on and the indicator light half way on constantly but anything would respond, to use it again I have to hold down the power botton until it turns off.
It was not sleeping because I have the sleep timer set to never, what I do have on is the sleep display timer to 15 minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Please help!
Now I got this then of turning it back again and a 3 min loading of the OS.
What could it mean, I don't know how to read this please

  • MacBook will not sleep. Suggestions?

    MacBook will not sleep. Suggestions?
    OS 10.6.8

Something quick to try is reseting the paramater RAM, which holds onto things like power settings. Reboot the Mac and after you hear the chimes hold down the following 4 keys:
    Command+Option + P+R
It will take a little longer to bootup as a result of the reset. People suggest also to hold it down until you hear the chimes multiple times (3-4) on the last reboot, let go of the keys and let it boot all the way up.

  • MacBook not waking up after sleep

I have a new MacBook, less than a week old.
Sometimes after I open my MacBook after sleep, nothing happens. Only the light on the front turns off but the display does not turn on and I don't hear that noise that Apple computers always make when wake them up or turn them on. I can hear the computer on but nothing is happening. I have to hold down the power button to reboot.
    What should I do?

I had the same problem, sometimes three or four times a day. You may try "resetting your PMU" -- I did this on suggestion, but continued to have the problem.
I created a new user account and kept all of the default settings, and started using only that account for a while. The problem with coming out of sleep went away, and things were fine for a week so I assume it is something software-related. I switched back to my desired user login now, with still no idea what might be the cause of the problem. If I had to guess, I'd say it's a user-configurable OS setting, or application that cannot recover from sleep mode, that hangs the OS.
I saw on another thread that using "Secure Virtual Memory" is maybe the root cause of some graphics problems (video driver issue). If true, maybe it also causes the "failure to wakeup" issue. Some have also suggested the wake-up issue can be avoided by turning off "require password to come out of sleep mode." I have not tried this; I need security and the ability to lock my desktop.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 17 Will Not Sleep!

    Hello everyone,
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 17" i7 model. Everything seems to work pretty well, but there is one issue. No matter what I do, the laptop will not sleep. If I click sleep/close the lid/press the power button, the computer just turns off instead of sleeping. I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC; no dice there. The battery says "Service Battery", so I was thinking that might be the problem, but getting a battery replaced is pricy. The issue happens regardless of if the charger is plugged in or not, but when the charger is plugged in it goes to green for a split second when the computer turns off, then back to orange. Is there any way this could be caused by a faulty logic board, or is it probably the battery?
    Thanks!

System Preferences > Energy Saver > Battery
    Click:  Restore Defaults
    Restart your Mac to test.
If that doesn't help, it might be the adapter > Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
The battery says "Service Battery", so I was thinking that might be the problem
And check battery cycle count >  Mac notebooks: Determining battery cycle count
