MacBook Not Working

The other day I was on the internet when I lost the connection. i decided to restart my mac. Now I can login to my mac but when it brings up my background picture nothing else shows up except for a little magnifying glass at the top right corner of the screen. i can still move the mouse and adjust the volume and brightness on my keypad but thats it. When i move the cursor over the magnifying glass iat shows me the spinning color thing but never does anything, i have left it on all night and nothing happens. I dont know what to do from here.

put your system DVD in and hold down the c button upon start up and don't let go until you see the language page... utilities... disk repair... after repair and if everything checks out... restart machine... if problem is still happening then you can choose what you want to do from there (i end up formatting... less of a head ache)...
cheers

  • IMessage on Macbook not working correctly

Recently, my imessage isn't working on my macbook.
When I click on a message that is already active, the whole chat deletes and the blank chat goes to the bottom of the list, as if it was the least recent chat I've had. When I sent messages, no messages show up.
Messages on regular chats do not send through, but in group chats it does, however it still does not show my messages.
I have tried resetting my computer multiple times, signing in and signing out and quitting the program but still it is not working.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HT2216 Applications on MacBook not working

My MacBook turns out but no applications will open. Some keyboard shortcuts work but not the mouse. Not sure what software version I've got or how to find out when it's not working! Any help appreciated.

If Finder is all that is showing press,
Shift + Command + A to open the Applications window
Use Arrow keys to go down to the Utilities folder,
Move into it and locate and highlight the System Profiler application.
Press Command  + O to open it
Use the down arrow, and run down to Software heading and you'll see what the OS version is.
Posting the OS version here will get your question posted in a better forum, that has more traffic and more chance of someone offering a solution.
Back to your main problem, in the meantime if you have a USB wired mouse, plug that in and see if things return to normal.

  • Internet Connect ported over from from iBook to MacBook not working

I recently bought a MacBook to replace my iBook. Not wanting to bring everything over I chose not to use the migration assistant and opted to bring certain files and programs over via firewire target mode. One of my choices was to bring over Internet Connect since I thought that would bring over my VPN settings. I think, however, the G4 version may not be entirely compatible with the intel/universal aspects of my new and already beloved MacBook.
I can connect to the Internet without problem but when I open Internet Connect I get no signal strength indication, the base station ID is not available, checking the box to show the Airport status in the menu bar does not place the status in the menu bar (it shows up fine in the iBook and my iMac G5). The summary tab just gives me Airport link status not available but does indicate how long my current connectivity to the Internet has lasted.
Is there any fix or reinstallation for Internet Connect possible? Thanks.
iMac G5 and iBook G4 and now MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

No part of the operating system from your G4 iBook is compatible with a new Intel MacBook.
You will have to replace any system files that you "brought over" from the G4 from the MacBook Installation DVD. The iBook is not Universal Binaries. That's why it is not working.
If you don't wanna use the migration, then you'll probably have to set up your VPN settings manually again.

  • New Macbook not working properly?

Well I recentely recieved my new Mac Book about 3 weeks back now and I recentely have came to find that my z key does not work when I'm on Mac OS X. But if I run bootcamp and go on windows the "Z" key on the keyboard works, the thing is aswell when I press it on Mac OS X it makes like a beep noise and nothing happen. Can someone please help me because although the Z key isn't used alot it is still no good not having it working.
    Thanks alot,
    Adam =]

Sorry for double posting but I have more information.
When I use the keyboard viewer and press Z it actually shows it being pressed on screen it just doesn't appear in text box's. Also I clicked on google search (randomly to try typing) and I didn't type I just pressed the keys using the keyboard viewers and when I pressed Z on the keyboard viewer it didn't come up so it's definately nothing wrong with the hardware it has to be something wrong with the programmes or something. Also I can write Z when I hold down shift + Z but other than that I can't use the cap lock to write it.
Oh this is all very confusing please help

  • HT1338 Power cable for Macbook not working / Apple Care discount?

My power cable for my Macbook stopped working. I went to the bookstore at my school and at first they told me I could get a discount on a new one ($29 instead of $79) because I have Apple Care. Then they told me that was a mistake and I have to pay full price even though I have Apple Care... True/false????

It appears your Macbook is at least 2 years old. If you have the extended warranty and there is no physicla damage to your power adapter, then you "might" be eligible for a free replacement.
Have you tried replacing the duckhead adapter yet? That's the part that normally fails first.

  • Transferred MS Office files on new MacBook not working

I just had my data migrated to a new MacBook and then installed MS Office:Mac 2011 on the new computer so my transferred Office files could work.  Some of them open up just fine and some open up blank or with funny lines.  For Excel, some of the docs have some blank columns (but when you are in the cell, the formula bar shows the data that's in there, but it doesn't show up in the cell) and some columns with data.  Some word docs have random lines but look blank.
Any ideas on what is going on?  Why are some working and some not and more importantly, how can I get them all to work, short of emailing all the files or using a memory stick to get all Office docs from my old doc to the new?  Does the fact that the migration occurred before the new Office program was installed have something to do with it?
    Thanks!

  • Mp3 cd burnt on macbook not working in cd player

I've burnt 2 mp3 cd's using iTunes on my macbook, neither will work in my mp3 player. Other mp3 cd's burnt using a PC work fine, can anyone give me tips on why this is happening and how to rectify this?

tohben wrote:is /Volumes/efi on OS X the same as /mnt/efi on linux?
In some sense, mount points are arbitrary -- you can mount a partition at /mnt/efi, at /boot/efi, at /Volumes/fred, at /some/weird/place, or whatever. There are a few limits on this based on certain critical directories -- for instance, attempting to mount anything at /etc is likely to lead to pain. Likewise, if a partition holds critical system files, it may need to be mounted at a particular location to do any good. For instance, if you split /var off onto its own partition, you'd want to mount that partition at /var (except perhaps for some very rare maintenance tasks). For the ESP, though, you can mount it just about anywhere -- under either Linux or OS X. The most common mount point in Linux is /boot/efi, followed in popularity by /boot. AFAIK, there's nothing remotely resembling a "standard" mount point for the ESP in OS X.
Speaking to your broader issue, tohben, I think you'll find this much easier if you download the official rEFInd binary .zip file from the rEFInd download page and run the install.sh script from OS X. That will do the installation for you. It's probably best to install it to the OS X root partition rather than to the ESP, because some users have problems with ~30-second delays when starting rEFInd from the ESP, but normally not when started from an HFS+ volume. (The default behavior of install.sh under OS X is to install to the OS X root partition; to install to the ESP, you must add the --esp option.) If you want rEFInd to read your Linux filesystems, you can add the --alldrivers option to install.sh to install drivers; or you can manually install only the driver(s) you need.

  • Old Macbook Died, trying to put old SSD into new Macbook, not working.

I had an old 07 model 17in Macbook pro with a 250g SSD in it. The old macbook finally died so I bought a used 2011 model 17in Macbook Pro that comes with a 500g spinning hard drive.
I would like to move the SSD from my old Macbook(complete dead) into my new Macbook, but apparently it's not as simple as remove and install. The new Macbook will not boot from my old SSD drive once I put it in. The old SSD was running Mavericks and with data on it which I would like to keep. Any suggestions?

Hello babyharpseal and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
"move the SSD from my old Macbook(complete dead)"
So you're sure that SSD is working properly? What happened to your '07? and did you keep your Mavericks Installer?
    If so:
Update your 2011 to the latest version of Mavericks and place your SSD in an external and do this:
Move your data to a new Mac - Apple Support
Then insure that your internal is bootable and reinstall Mavericks on your SSD.
    http://macs.about.com/od/Mavericks/ss/How-To-Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X-Mav ericks-On-A-Macs-Startup-Drive.htm
This will be a clean install and all data will be erased.
"The OS X Mavericks Installer, available from the (Apple Store)"
    No longer true.
Apple will want you to update to Yosemite but I'm currently not recommending that.

  • IBook migration to Macbook not working, and have tried every solution I have seen on the internet, still my new MB will not recognize the ibook.  Plz help if you can.

It's pretty much what I have seen others write about, only I have not gotten any of their solutions to work.  Last thing I tried was a new firewire cable.  The mb can't see my ibook wirelessly either.  Now I have a new computer and no way to really use it.  This is probably my 20th Mac and I have been using them since 1988, and this is just about the very first time I have been frustrated with a Mac, unable to fix it, and ready to send it back.  So any help here would be appreciated.

Which exact model is the iBook? Is it the Mac that's running Mac OS X 10.4.11? The System Profiler (Applications > Utilities > System Profiler) will tell you, but if you're not sure, you can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Which exact model is the MacBook? Again, the System Profiler will tell you, but If you're not sure, you can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html
(I'm assuming it's not the latest MacBook because the new ones are no longer equipped with FireWire ports.)
Which version of the OS is the MacBook running?
Kappy's User Tip may help you out:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2295
Even if the two could connect wirelessly, it's not advisable to do larger transfers in that way. It is painfully slow.

    Hi,
My Macbook is paired to my PC and both PC and Macbook can see each other...
The Macbook can also see files in my PC and can directly "Get file"
I can even "Send file" to my PC from the Macbook
I can even do other tasks like deleting files from my PC etc from my Macbook...
But When I try to send a file from my PC to my Macbook the transfer never works - The PC says: "Could not connect to the remote device"
    Help plz...

On your dock or in applications in finder is an application called system preferences. Open it. Then click bluetooth. Go under sharing and set your bluetooth sharing options.
Then under the system preferences there is another item called sharing. Check your firewall settings there.

  • Built in Speakers on macbook not working... reset?

    i have a macbook , 10.4.10, 512mb ram, 13'' and the speakers aren't working, a red light is
coming out of the headphone jack , it is not a hardware issue as when i turn it on it makes the
start up sound, I heard that i should reset the speakers , if i should , how do i do this ? i tried all the
    system preferences etc...
    thanks

The red light means it is in digital mode. It is controlled by a switch in the headphone jack when an optical plug is inserted. Sometimes the switch sticks. Plugging and unplugging headphones might reset the switch. If not, try poking around in the headphone jack with a toothpick.

  • Imessages on macbook not working. All contacts/conversations that used imessage are now switched to google talk/jabber.

imessage on my macbook has always had a few bugs...it never recieved imessages sent from other friends with iphones right away, maybe upon next start up it would, but the messages would all come out of order.  It could send out messages that would then also show up on my iphone 5s.
As of today, all my conversations that were going on my imessages no longer have the contact names associated with them, just the phone numbers, and they show as offline.  The text field shows that the conversations are in Google Talk (which is offline) but each of those phone numbers is associated to someone I know with an iphone and they should be imessages, not google talk buddies.  I don't even have all those numbers stored in my google accounts.
I have tried altering settings both on my phone and my laptop so that only my imessages account is logged in or active and have deselected google talk, but none of the contacts come back up.  Icloud is set to sync contacts with my phone and with imessages.
How can I get my contacts back under imessages?

    Hi,
I have seen this with a actual Jabber account that was using Facebook chat as the Buddy list.
This seemed to loose the Real Names from the Contacts app  even though the details still seemed to be in that app.
The issue was traced in that case to an issue with the Facetime server (the Facebook Chat server is supposed to check with the main server and uses this to verify "real names" and this can bypass the Mac's own Contacts app if you are not syncing with Facebook.
Have you tried restarting the computer ?

  • Macbook not working correctly

I recently purchased a Macbook 4 weeks ago. The firmware failed on it. From there, the laptop died and was fried. I sent my computer back and was given a refurbished computer. With this I was displeased. I felt that I was owed a new computer with the money i paid and the amount of apple computers my family has bought. Over the course of the past two years we have purchased one ibook, three macbooks, one imac 65, one macbook pro, one 65 dual desktop, and eight ipods. With my refurbished macbook, someone in the store tried opening the lock with the battery with a key and scratched the plastic very badly. Now two weeks after i received the computer, the battery died and no longer works. I am interested in knowing what will apple do to resolve this problem. I feel as I am due a new computer with what has happened and receiving a refurbished computer after my first macbook was no longer functional, but I am open to what Apple has to say about this situation. I am currently out of the country and cannot call the 1-800 number. If there is an international number i can call for phone technical support on this to fix the problem at hand.
Right now, my father is staying in Sturgize, North Dakota in a Harley Davidson convention. If he can help in any way since he is in the United States and I am currently out of the country, please let me know. Thank you.

Find the international number for where ever you are located now. Call them and explain.
If your father is in SD, you'd have to have him call and tell about the issues and send it in, from where he is.
