Macbook optical out to spdif....

i know this is not exactly the right forum for that, but as a logic user i know maybe some people here could get an idea.
i would love to know if anybody ever try to use the optical in/out(mini jack i think) to communicate with another digital device, like dat or whatever in spdif..?
if somebody tell me it work,i would love to know where and what i bought(adapter, optical converter etc) to make it work,
thx

First, let me say that I'm new to Mac, and I don't quite "get it" yet, but I've really struggled with this Optical I/O.
This is too bad, since the only reason that I bought it was to record music. Here is what I've learned.
You have to configure the Audio devices from a control panel that is in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder on the Hard Drive.
Within this Control Panel you can configure the use of this device, along with the Microphone input and the Built in Speaker Outputs. This Panel lets you select something called an Aggregate Device, which as best I can surmise is an integrated view of I/O for this port, but I can't quite master its use.
After a few weeks I was able to get the input working. I take a Digitial COAX S/PDIF signal out of a Behringer Digital mixing board using a Digital COAX cable (has RCA type plugs) that I bought a a local Best Buy.
You have to convert S/PDIF into optical by a conversion box. When I bought the Mac, they told me that I could find these converters at any Radio Shack. This has NOT proven to be true. I tried local Radio Shacks, Best Buys, Comp USAs, etc. and I even had some of them tell me that no such device existed.
Fortunately, there are many web sites where you can find this, and I used a place Called RAM Electronics from New Jersey. I bought a converter and a cable that had the standard square TOSLINK cable out put. I bought a cable that had the square connecter on one end and the mini TOSLINK connecter on the other. The Mini connector is what you need to input into your Mac.
After another week or two of figuring out how to get Logic Express to recognize the input, I was able to play guitar and record into the MBP by this path. I'd rate that figuring all this out was about on par with learning how to use a new expansion card and application on and Windows machine. However, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT ANY EASIER, and this was a big disappointment for me. I was looking forward to the mythical easy of use of the Mac, and did not find it.
Regarding the use of this port for output, I have not been able to figure that out yet. I discovered too late that the adapter I bought from RAM was a uni-directional converter, which didn't convert back from the optical signal to the S/PDIF digital. I went back to the web site and got a device which is bi-directional, and it just showed up this week. I've tried it, but I am not getting a signal out of the Mac, at all.
I guess I have another week ahead of me to try and figure this out.
The sound, when listened to via headphones is clean. The plug ins and effects work well. I just need to figure out how to drive the output, and then I'll be a happy camper. If anyone can help with that, I'd be much obliged.
Hope that helps.

  • Added SPDIF Optical out to MSI A75-G35 and I get no sound

Hello, I connected a TOSLINK cable to my Onkyo receiver in lieu of 2 channel analogue.  I know I'm configured correctly on the receiver's end.  I set up my realtek HD audio manager to send music via WMP to the receiver using the PC's optical output.  The receiver is not recognizing any PCM signals from my PC.  I even popped Skyfall in the PC optical drive.  It plays the video just fine but the receiver doesn't even pick up the Dolby Digital signal from the movie.  I get no sound from the optical output, period.
When I configure audio manager for an analogue signal output through my headphones, all is good.  I change the settings to employ the optical output, and nothing happens.
I just want to play music on my home audio system via my PC mobo's add-in optical output.  1st, I had the latest HD audio drivers from the MSI website, which didn't work.  Right now, I'm using audio driver version 6.0.1.7083, dated 11/5/2013
Also, I tested the optical cable on my cable receiver box to the onkyo receiver.  No problemo.
Any other info about my system hardware or software that you need, just let me know.

LOL  No, I modified a toslink header bracket provided for an old DFI mobo.  It's a simple 3 wire config(ground, optical out, +5V).  Trust me when I say I got it right when I rewired the  pinout.  I have a red light passing through the end of the cable.  The SPDIF header is a $15 option from MSI and shipping cost is $16 and change.

  • MAC Mini and SPDIF Optical Out

I am new to the MAC after 30 years on a PC, so there is a bit on humility involved here! LOL!
I am trying to configure the the sound for SPDIF audio optical out. I see no settings in the Sound Preferences? I only have speakers and HDMI.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There are two places you need to visit:
    1. System Preferences > Sound
Pick "Built-in Audio" for audio out. This corresponds to the optical toslink output. It is the same option as "internal speakers" if your toslink is not plugged in.
    2. Open /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup.app and in it configure the build-in audio for the bit depth and sampling frequencies you require. If you are listending to CDs and iTunes music, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz is what you need. If you have higher-resolution music, adjust accordingly.
You can circumvent step 1 by hoding down the option key while clicking the little speaker sound icon in the menu bar (assuming you have it in the menu bar).

  • Audugy 2 Platinum Spdif Optical out audio skips/stutters/static/pop/interfere

I have the Audigy Dolby 5. working, blue light from the sony receiver, but when the dvd plays with powerdvd, the picture is fine, but the audio skips and stutters. It works fine when I am decoding via the audigy and analog,?and I have tried powerdvd and windvd and they both have the same issue with spdif, so the issue is with the Optical out and some kind of interference.
    Is there anything?I can do?

  • Which external sound card with optical out is compatible for macbook

hello guys!i got a macbook model 2011 and i want to connect with my speakers which is logitech z5500 with an optical cable!Of course i have read a lot of answers in various forums that told me about the optical out of mac which is the headphones out too!but this doesnt give me real surround 5.1 and i want something more specific such as an external sound card to give me the real sound!i prefered Creative Xfi pro but i have also read that iOSX doesnt recognize the soundcard or have various problems!
    please help me !!!!

No Creative sound cards are fully compatible with Vista at this time. Nobody really knows if or when there will be fully working, stable drivers from Creative that work with Vista. If you really need sound, the only fully working cards are from C-media I believe. My on-board C-media sound chip works perfectly with Vista.

  • Does anyone know the sound card specs (USB/Optical out) for the Macbook Pro 15 Retina?

I have looked everywhere and have just given up. The "technical specs" aren't very technical at all. Anyway, I have mine hooked up to a Cinema display, so the Thunderbolt and one USB are used on the left hand side. That leaves just one USB for 3 printers, one scanner, my Griffin PowerMate and my DAC. So I was wondering if using the Optical (Toslink Mini) out in the headphone jack might be a plan if I can find a DAc that deosn't need the USB for power AND if the optical out is 24/192.
I am just starting to set the laptop up as a replacement for my Mac Pro Desktop so wondering what to do here.
    Thanks!

I've just started to look into an issue I'm having with my DAC and my new iMac. There are some serious issues with using a DAC with USB3.0, so you may not even be able to use your DAC on your USB port. I'm getting a lot of popping noises when going through my USB 3.0 ports. I've had some success my hooking my DAC up to a UDSB hub (which is USB2). Problem there becomes power supply issue, whereas the problem with USB3 is data transfer.

  • No optical-out sound on MSI KT4-Ultra!!

Hi, I have recently set up a system based on the MSI KT4-Ultra board. I'm using an Athlon XP 1700+, a Radeon 9000 video card, and I've installed Windows 98.
Although all the drivers and audio applications which MSI provided installed fine, and 2-channel audio from the on-board sound chip works great both for music and for the 3-4 games I've installed so far, I can't seem to get the optical SPDIF port to work! I bought a cable and connected the computer to my Sony MD-player and attempted to copy my CDs onto MD. I go into the MSI control panel and check the box to enable SPDIF-out, removing the speaker cable from the analog line-out just for good measure. When I plug the optical cable into my MD it recognises digital input and prepares for recording. I press record on the MD and play on the computer's CD-player app, but the MD LED shows "no signal". I'm pretty sure both the MD recorder and cable are OK since I've used them to copy CDs from a Kenwood portable CD-player quite recently, so it must be the MB that's giving me problems. Indeed, when I've stopped playback in the CD-player app and went back into the audio control panel, I found that the SPDIF box had been unchecked of its own accord. I've tried this several times, and I've unplugged the S-bracket and reinstalled it all over again just to make sure it was plugged in properly, and I still get the same problem. All audio works fine except optical out! Haven't got a coaxial cable or recorder so I can't check if the coaxial port is equally buggered or if it's just the optical, but I'm getting really annoyed here: this was the one feature I liked best about this board and the only one which isn't working! Any ideas, anyone?

dude, i think i can get u ur signal, but currently i can only get silent recordings, u may have better luck.
on the minidisc, there should be a switch or button that will toggle synchronised recording on and off, turning it off should get u a signal, but it wont be in sync wiv the cd, ie u cant trust it to form track gaps.
hope that helps, done flame me if it dont, if i manage to get substance to my recording, i will send u the info just in case.
    take it easy

  • Optical out...but wait, m

Im sorry if this has been asked before. I did look, but failed to see anything relevant.
Now, I have the Creative X-Fi Extreme gamer. I have it all working just fine under Vista. Awesome sound.
Now, the problem here-in lies. I want to add a 5. system into the loop. Just a cheapish one for gaming. For the most part I will have my headphones on, but when the missus goes to bed, I want to have the option of putting it out to speakers.
    I was looking at:
    http://uk.europe.creative.com/shop/product.asp?category=3&subcategory=9&product=357&p age=
Which fit the price range nicely. BUT MY MICROPHONE is a MUST. I see on this card that the Optical out doubles as the mic port. I have looked to see if there is a way I can juggle my jacks like you could with Realtek on board.
I cant seem to find such an option. So if I plugin a 5. through the optical, what happens to my mic?
I play in a clan using Ventrilo (VoIP program), so I really do need access to my mic.
Im kind of surprised that a card aimed at gamers would seemingly have a poor mic set up, especially as games these days have VoIP built in.
Maybe I am way off base, am hoping there is a solution.

  • Optical Out... Still Supported?

I used to use optical out on my MacBook all the time. I'm one of those people who still pulls out his MD player from time to time and I'm thinking of getting another MD deck. Anywaayyy...
I haven't used the optical out for some time and now when I hook everything up there is no sound. I know I'm doing it right, done it a thousand times. Checked my cables etc. with a different system, all good. MacBook seems fine, the light's there, switching from analog to digital is working fine, everything is as it should be under Audio/MIDI. Just no sound.
It was probably OS Leopard when I last used it. Is there no driver in Yosemite?
Someone told me the newer MacBooks and MacBook Pros don't have optical in/out any more (shame) so maybe Apple just dropped support for it.
My MacBook Pro is a mid 2009.
My vintage Yamaha CA-610 II anxiously awaits a signal.
    Thanks for any feedback/info.

  • Optical Out 5.1 not working

Optical Out 5. not working?Hi everyone.
I have a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI Express card on a windows XP SP3 PC.
I connected the optical OUT to a Sony 5. Home Theather system, DTS and Dolby Digital capable.
When I configure the creative console to output 5. channels, and use the tone or channel tests, I can only hear the front left and front right channels, the others make no sound. My receiver says it's receiving a 2.0 signal, but If I listen to stereo music files or movies, the sound comes out wrong, with low volume and a weird metallic sound. If I set the console to 2., this problem disapears.
Using powerDVD with a 5. DVD, and setting it's options to SPDIF passthrough, the sound it's a perfect 5..
The same happens with Mediaplayer classic using the AC3Filters, and configuring the filter for SPDIF passthrough.
The problem is that the Creative Console doesn't let me choose SPDIF passthrough, I don't have the Digital I/O icon that the help describes and I don't have the mode switcher (it's fixed on Entertainment mode).
    What am I doing wrong?
thanks everyone and excuse my broken English.

Re: Optical Out 5. not working
Sorry, I mistook your card for another model. There is no option to select SPDIF passthrough. The Digital Out for this card is always on.
Please note that optical cable will only carry pcm stereo or compressed bit stream AC3, dts. That's the reason you are getting stereo when stereo music files. How many channels you get when playing movies depends on how the movie is encoded too.
I am not sure what is that weird metallic sound, it would be advisable to contact Customer Support to see if they can help you on this.

JSB Xtreme Audio Notebook optical out problem with Home TheaterSystem-HELP!, I have this sound card connected?(optical OUT) ?to my home?theater system's digital IN ?through the recommended /8in. optical miniplug-to-optical SPDIF cable. Theater system is set correctly to Digital-In mode. I have no sound!
The cable is a Velocity Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug digital cable. I don't see any settings in the Creative Console Launcher. The notebook is a Dell XPS M730 (Vista 32).
I have a PS3, DirecTV, and the SB Xtreme Audio Notebook cable on a hub switch that connects to the system's?one Optical IN. The PS3 and DirecTV sound perfect!
The sound card works fine with standard PC speakers. I'm at a loss as?to what to try next. I set this whole system up myself, so I'm pretty good at working out the kinks, except this one!
    Karen

OK. I just went to Control Panel - Sound - Playback - Digital Output Device (SB Xtreme Audio Notebook) - Properties - Advanced. I experimented with different sample rates and bit depths. Clicked the test button and lo and behold - sound from the HTS! I've tried iTunes, PowerDVD (configured to digital output) and YouTube - no sound! Am I missing something really obvious?
HA! Just backed out to Playback and selected Digital Output Device (SPDIF) and set as Default. Sound is emunating from HTS! Well, that mystery is solved! Who knew.
Thanks anyway! Any comments or advice will still be appreciated.

  • Optical Out Brack

    Hi everyone,
I recently bought a SB Audigy 2 ZS. I happen to have a SDPIF (optical out) bracket that came with my motherboard. I've been able to use this with my onboard sound (Realtek AC'97) without any problems.
My question is: can I connect this optical out bracket to my Audigy 2 ZS soundcard? I can see some pins at the end of the card with the label "SPDIF IO". But there are 8 (5 + 3) pins whereas my optical out bracket has 3 pin connector on it. I know its suppose to be for some kinda external controller that comes with the platinum edition. But I want to know if it will work with my bracket.
    Thank you in advance. :-)
