MacBook or MacBook Pro I cannot decide?

I've a Lenovo 15.4" 3000 N200 laptop currently running vista and a screen resolution of 1680x1050. After much thought and temptation from others running macs I'm looking at changing to a mac. The 2 I am looking at are the MacBook 2.4GHz, with a 320Gb HDD and 4GB ram or the MacBook Pro 2.53GHz, 320GB with 4GB ram.
After adding the larger hard disk and Ram options to the MacBook the cost is only about £250 less than the MacBook Pro that already has these as standard, when using a discount I can get at work.
I do the normal website surfing and email along with office tasks with excel and word, with a bit of photoshop and web design. I also do use the laptop for audio editing and recording audio, as I do some freelance work for radio stations and prepare audio for broadcast. On top of this we have also have a few weekends away and take the laptop with us to keep in touch and watch to odd film. I also have the Iphone and will encode films/dvds to watch on this. In the future we might get a video camera and edit the occasional home video to dvd, but nothing serious. I will also add windows to this with parallels to run some small simple windows apps that are not available on Mac and I use from time to time, I know changing to Mac will require me to change my software for audio and office, but the copies I have are old and I'd look to update to newer ones soon anyway so am ignoring this extra cost at the moment.
So the question is, I'm slightly edging towards the MacBook as its fairly portable and easy to carry around being 13" with good battery life. However I am aware and concerned the resolution of the MacBook is much lower than my existing resolution and am considering the extra £250 for the larger screen to help compensate the resolution. So the question is what would other people do in my situation, is the Pro with the extra £250 and size/weight. If you think it is then is it worth the small extra again for the 7200rpm Hard Disk that is not available on the MacBook.
I know its down to personal choice on what to buy but any comments would be appreciated from current users of the new macbooks as I have been trying to decide from reading reviews since they were released last month and every day I change my mind.
Thanks in advance.
James

from my experience, coming from a Mac Book Pro Core 2 Duo, to my now Aluminum MacBook - I made my decision based on the udder lack of necessity of the greater expense at the lack of true expansion.
Please understand, while I am not complaining in the least bit, the MacBook is now a true-contender in the higher end market. the upgraded video card is truly magical, and allows nearly the same amount of computing as my last-generation Mac Book Pro.
the issue at hand is truly the Video Card, Firewire 800, and the ExpressCard 34 slot. the difference is $500 between the top of the MacBook line and the bottom of the MacBook Pro line.
if you need a descrete video card, which will give you excellent gaming performance, second only to the Imac or Mac Pro, then the MacBook pro line is it. BUT, the MacBook has great video too. i'll use World of Warcraft as a benchmark. on the MacBook Pro (prev-gen), i can easily sustain 45 FPS, and can eek out as much as 70 FPS. On the new MacBook, i sustain 35 FPS, and can eek out 60 FPS. i've tried World of Warcraft on a Plastic MacBook, and 24 FPS was the MAX, and normally a not achieved.
Firewire 800 is another consideration. if you have the need for Firewire on your laptop, then there is no choice, MacBook Pro.
lastly, the ExpressCard port. i have no need for this, and only used this for a 3rd party SD card reader. i purchased a USB adapter for my SD cards. Issue solved.
Now resolution. the 1200x800 is small, but not tiny. I owned a 12" powerbook, now that was small. its completely your preference here...

    Any ideas ?

This doesn't work for me at all. I tried entering exactly the same information that I used to set up my regular email account and I'm still getting an error message. I even tried switching to using my gmail account and neither one worked. Then it got hung up and had to repair my database! I have a lot of photos on my Mac (thank goodness they're backed up) and I was really sweating it for a moment.
Apple is so easy until it's not. I find this to be really aggrevating and I'm irritated that it hasn't been fixed. In fact I did an online search and someone described this same problem in detail and it was exactly what was happening to me. Same error messages.
I'm frustrated that Apple keeps updating it's operating system and then we go through these glitches.
And while I'm at it, I have never had such a frustrating time using my login information as I have to get into this forum! Why do they make it so difficult? There's just something about the way it's worded that get's me messed up every time. Meanwhile, at least get iPhoto fixed!

Hi! I've got CS3 Design Standard - the actual disks and Software License certificate. It was installed on my laptop which crashed and could therefore not be uninstalled. I have now installed it on my new MacBook Pro, but cannot get it registered with the serial number. Is it because it wasn't uninstalled on the previous laptop? What to do now?? Thx!

Maybe this can help someone else...  I simply had to properly uninstall CS3 and reinstall it again after that.  I think that sorted it!  I also remember having a similar issue with Macs at work a couple of years back.  Not sure whether the same applies to CS5/CS6.  Here's a link on how to properly uninstall CS3 on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS.  I'm on OS X 10.9.2 but it worked just fine.  Remove Creative Suite 3 and CS3 products

I have downloaded and installed the 10.6.8 V1.1 Combo pack but this didn't fix the problem.

Is it possible to view .bbb files in a mac? how? I am transferring my bberry contacts onto my macbook pro, but cannot open the .bbb files...

Well, if simply double-clicking the .bbb file doesn't work, first try dragging the file onto the BBDM icon (either in the Dock, on the desktop or in the Applications folder or wherever it's stored). That tells Finder to open it with that application.
Otherwise, right-click on the file and choose the Open With option. If BBDM is not the default, select Get Info and use the Open with box from there to select it (if it's not in the list, choose 'other' and navigate to it), then click the 'change all' button.

  • I have Adobe Photoshop 10 installed on my MacBook Pro but cannot get it to type an O with Umlauts as it does on the keyboard outside Photoshop

I have Adbobe Photoshop 10 on my MacBook pro but when using it cannot get an O with Umlauts, which are easily done outside Adobe.  I feel sure that it must be possible, but nothing I have tried has succeeded.  Can anyone help?

How are you trying to get the Ö? By holding down the O key or by pressing Option-U to get the umlauts and then press the O?
I have a later version of Photoshop and am able to type Ö using the "Option-U + O" method, but not using the "hold down O" method. My guess is this has to do with the type engine inside Photoshop. Adobe apps tend to use a different type engine because it is capable of things the OS type engine cannot do.

  • IMac or Macbook Pro Can not Decide Need Help

The iMac or Mac Pro I can't decide which is the best one to get and I need to get a
good answer before next Thursday. The 24" iMac with extreme Intel processor or Macbook Pro 17" with 2.6 Intel Processor. I'm into Graphic Design in the winter months and want something that doesn't crash when I'm designing websites with dreamweaver. I need to know from you professionals which is better. Also this will be my first MAC. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Newbie,
It really comes down to your desire for a fast Desktop, or a fast portable. Only you can decide whether or not you want to "go portable." Either one would suite your professional needs, and do so extremely well. And Macs simply don't just "crash" (not if they are working as they should). My well-over-1-year-old 17" Macbook Pro has never been shut down, and I rarely restart it. No crashes, no problems. I have seen my wife's 3-year-old iBook with an "uptime" of over 160 days (that's almost 6 months with no shutdown or restart!!!). Also no crashes, no problems.
The 24" iMac is simply... stunning. And, with the 2.8 Gig Core2Duo Extreme, it should really rock speed-wise. But, it would remain in one place. The benefits of the iMacs are (obviously) the larger displays, larger hard drive capacities, and sometimes better performance (as in the case of the 24" w/ Core2Duo Extreme).
On the other hand, there's a lot to be said about being portable. "Going portable" is potentially a complete paradigm shift, as far as how one works. My Macbook Pro goes with me almost all of the time, and I can use it for work or play at a moment's notice. I have a really nice dual-display setup at home, which has (sadly) never been used since I moved to a portable; I simply can't be bothered being tied to a single location to use a computer anymore.
In the end, the decision is yours. Either way, you'll be happy.

  • After installing windows 7 on my macbook pro, i cannot access my mac

After installing windows 7 on my macbook pro late 2011, when I try to access the mac side of the computer it just stays in "thinking" mode and will not open up the mac. Windows side opens and works ok.
I only know enough to try to uninstall windows 7 then hopefully open the mac and possibly reinstall the windows 7.
PROBLEM: I only know how to uninstall windows 7 from the mac side (in the bootcamp) BUT cannot access it??
    Any help. Thank you

    Hi craig1045,
It is possible that the file system for the volume containing the Mac operating system, or the OS itself has become damaged. I suggest that you follow the steps in this article to try to repair them -
A flashing question mark or globe appears when you start your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1440
    Specifically -
If your installation of OS X needs repair
If you don't see your startup disk displayed in Startup Manager, or if you see a prohibitory symbol (⊘) appear, your startup drive may need directory repair, or OS X may need to be reinstalled.
If you only see a disk named "Recovery HD" in Startup Manager, select it instead. You can also start from OS X Recovery by holding down Command and R on the keyboard at startup.
From the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window that appears, select your startup disk (usually named "Macintosh HD") from the left side of the Disk Utility window.
    Click the First Aid tab.
Click Repair Disk to verify and repair any issues with your OS X startup disk.
After repairing the disk, try to start up normally.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, start from OS X Recovery and reinstall OS X.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • Macbook Pro 17 cannot boot into Mac OS anymore after making partition on windows

My Mac is a Macbook Pro 17", I got it from my friend (no original disc).
So after upgrading it to Mavericks (I was unable to install Windows using Boot camp of 10.6.8), Boot Camp successfully let me install Windows 7 Professional (x64).
The problem is that, I shrink the Boot Camp partition, and create another NTFS partition (so I can store data in the second partition as I usually do when using Windows). Now, I cannot boot into Mac OS anymore. Holding Command + Option + R does nothing, holding Option while startup shows a hard drive named Windows (instead of Mac HD). And no Recovery HD too

    shakhriyor,
you’re going to need to purchase a replacement pair of the original grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from Apple to be able to fix this problem.

  • Hi, after an update of Thunderbird on a macbook pro, I cannot find + open my local mail files any more. Any idea?

Hi, I have made an update an older Thunderbird version (34.x) to version 35.5.0 on a MacBook pro, OS = Yosemite
Last Friday, I was able to see all my local older mail files and folders, several years of history.
Today, when opening Thunderbird, the old mail folders are all gone. I cannot see if they had been deleted from my disk or if they are still there but hidden. I can only see actual new mails.
How can I find my old mail files on the Mac? What file type or folder type do I need to search for? How can I configure my actual Thunderbird version to display the old folders? How can I recover the folders/files from deletion?
    Best regards
    Maria

    sandraibrahim3,

  • Unsendable email error panel runs off bottom edge of my small MacBook pro. Cannot move or reduce the error panel to access the functional part of it.

    HELP!
I crafted an email for a club I belong to. I filled the blind copy address area with a large list of email addresses. The message did not send, the server (Earthlink) rejected my list of addresses. I am on a small Macbook pro laptop running OS X and the rejected email list goes below and beyond the desktop space. The area on the error panel that has functionality is out of reach and the mail window won't allow me to get to it. I am stuck with an unsendable email on my desktop. I can't delete it, the red button in the upper left corner is off, inactive. The sizing function in the lower right will make the email window smaller but the "Cannot send using this server" panel with the long list of emails remains the same size with the part I need to access running off the bottom out of reach.
The unsendable email comes back when I force quit. It comes back when I restart. I am at my wits end.
Hope there is help for this.

I'm bumping this back up. Does anyone have a solution for this? It's making me crazy, too!

  • The file "Acceptance Letter.pages" doesn't exist. Since installing Yosemite on MacBook Pro I cannot save or export from Pages. Just get the message at beginning of this post. How to solve problem?

I cannot save or export from Pages since installing Yosemite on MacBook Pro . I just get the message at beginning of this post “Acceptance Letter.pages” doesn’t exist or whatever file title I have inserted How to solve problem?

Thanks Peter but I was not seeking to store with I-Cloud. In fact I never store documents with I-cloud.
I was in fact trying to store the files to Documents, which is where I usually keep such things.
Have now discovered that if I leave the file untiled and simply close it, rather than saving it then it will save, oddly, to Documents. I then have to re-title it and move to the folder I want it in.
Despite the above, even once it is titled and saved in Documents then if I reopen it I still cannot then Export it to a Word or PDF file. I still just get the message . xxxxxx.pages does not exist!
Bad news as I am constantly exporting documents to Word and PDF to send to others who do not use a Mac
