Macbook or Macbook Pro?  That is the question!

I bought a Macbook whenever they first came out and like everything new, problems rise, all normal. My problems:
1) Keyboard top cracks on the edges
2) Sleep-light no longer turns on
3) Magsafe melted
4) Display slightly dims in and out
5) I think thats it.
As much as I would LOVE to have a Macbook Pro, for my needs, I dont believe it to be necessary. I do a lot of HD Video Production, but my Macbook handles VERY well. As far as I can tell, the only difference, or BIG, difference between a Macbook (2.4Ghz) and a Macbook Pro(2.4Ghz) are 1) Display size, and 2) Graphics card.
My biggest concerns really are about the materials in the black Macbook and the speed/performance differences between the Macbook 2.4Ghz and the Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz. Are the black Macbooks still as weak as the first gen (mine) and will crack, stain, etc etc?? Comparing those 2 (Macbook vs Macbook Pro, 2.4Ghz), do they run differently, or is there no real reason for spending an extra grand on a graphics card that I dont need because I only need to use Final Cut EXPRESS?? Help me i choosing my next Mac! Thanks!
GC

I own a macbook 2.13 and also a macbook pro 2.33, and love them both, but the feel of the keyboard (let alone that the bkpro lights up when dark) feels much better, the bkpro also has firewire 800 in case it's needed, both are made good but when working on both such as changing memory, the book pro has more precision on its components. The aluminum body on the bkpro dissipates heat better than the plastic on the macbook and aside from the fact that I could hook up a large monitor to the bkpro because of its dedicated video card, the graphics on the bkpro look much sharper and well defined, which is something I love apple computers for. Aside from specs and power there is prestige and this sometimes matters to some people who like being mobile, some people will define others by what they drive and the bkpro it's a high performance vehicle. Looks fast just standing still.

  • To MacMini or To MacBook Pro, That Is the Question

    Hi,
I am getting rather frustrated in transporting my MacBook Pro 15" about from Home Office to Work Office (50% of time in each) have iPad and Air but need to run VMware for windows applications; arghhh! so require a little extra RAM, 8GB works fine on my Pro.
I could go to a new 13" MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM extra $500.00AU though compared to the MacMini. Have Monitors and all the other for the mini and have used one at home for my Media Centre for a few years and am very pleased with the performance.
    Just cannot decide.
Any opinions would be gratefully accepted.

    Yes Allan,
Very good point, I just love the Pro. I would leave one at each location and I have cloud so it would work. You are correct though I just need a desktop.

  • How can i retrieve data from a macbook pro that has the flashing folder with an ? mark in it, to a brand new iMac

I want to do a data recovery of my 15" MBP that has the flashing folder w/ ? mark in it, to an iMac 21.4"; how can i go about that?

You'll have to watch the video and buy a few tools to extract the driive.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Then use something like this to connect to the other Mac or PC with MacDrive installed.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U3NVSPATA/
You also can get the same adapter elsewhere online for as low as $12 I've seen.
Likely it's a USB 2,1 which your Mac's can only accept USB 2,1 anyway, no need to pay more for a USB 3 unless you want too.
No compensation for site or product mention
You likely should be having a professional or Apple tech attempt to bypass the firmware password if you forgot it, it's the best way to go about things.
Just because the Mac has a spinning wheel gray screen at boot doesn't mean it's ruined, you just need to bypass the firmware password and then from there fix the machine's cause for not booting, which is likely a software issue from a third party kernel extension file.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
You should know that opening the iMac could likely ruin it and will ruin any warranty or AppleCare, and if it's a Early 2011 model or later you can't replace the hard drive yourself as Apple has proprietary software installed on the drive that needs to "talk" to OS X to control the fans speeds.
    Good Luck.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro that freezes up daily

I have a new 2.4 multi touch MacBook Pro that gets the Mac equivalent of the Windows BSOD every single day. A grey wall scrolls down the screen at random times and say the computer must be rebooted.
This is a real annoying feature considering the single core MacBook Pro I was using previously always worked just fine.
What's up with the new MacBook Pro's?

    Hi Shore,
Since the computer is brand-spanking new the most likely cause of your kernel panics is poorly seated RAM modules. Try taking the RAM sticks out of the machine and reseating them. This will most likely solve the problem.
If it doesn't, see this article for other ways to diagnose kernel panics:

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

  • Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version?

Is the hard drive better in the MacBook Pro that the Air version? What are the negatives?

That is a question only Apple can answer and the purchaser must decide if the price is worth it.  Apples pricing for upgrades in the past has often been such that third party RAM and HHDs/SSDs were less expensive.  However those options are no longer available with the retina MBPs.
    Ciao.

  • How to unlock macbook pro that has been remote locked from the icloud

how do you unlock the macbook pro that has been remotly locked from the icloud because i forgot my password

This question should NOT be answered. Using Find My Mac to lock one's computer is a personal security measure for those whose Macs have been lost or stolen and may be in the hands of criminals. Publicly posting instructions for defeating that measure would be tantamount to abetting theft.
If you have foolishly locked your own computer and need to unlock it, take it to an Apple Store. Be prepared to prove you are its rightful owner.

How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.

    LizMaddock,
you can reset the input source to Spanish by selecting the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, selecting the Input Sources tab, and pressing the “+” button in the lower-left corner to select one of the Spanish input sources. The “Spanish – ISO” input source is most similar to the physical Spanish keyboard layout.

  • My quandary is how to transfer EVERYTHING from a Macbook pro that won't boot up to a new one, will the usual linking with a firewire lead still work?

I have an early intel Macbook Pro that wouldn't wake from sleep and won't now boot up, i'm just going to replace it with a new 13" i5 but i need to transfer the last five years of my life off the dead one to the new one, there's nearly 3 grand of music software and mp3's before i even think about the 10 years of photographs and videos, some of it is backed up but i ideally want to just transfer it all over.
what are my options? will linking the two together with a firewire or similar still be possible without the old one booting up (it still has power and turns on but the sleep light is constantly lit but very dim, the hard drive does sound like it's spinning up) or am I best removing the old Hard drive and putting it in an external case, would I be able to access directories and folders or could i boot up off an external drive or would there be hardware compatibility problems?
without sounding off i'd appreciate any complicated processes be explained in beginner to intermediate levels of "GEEK" i'm far from a pro but should be able to muddle through!!!
you've no idea how much any help with this will be appreciated!!!

Since the old MBP is dead the only option is to remove the hard drive and use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to get all your stuff off the old drive.
One note though make sure you use the same user name and passord on your new MBP as you had on the old one.
As to software hopefully you have all the license information written down other wise you may have a hard time reinstalling some of it. Also be aware that OS X Lion will not run older PPC software. So if you have older programs that used Rosetta to run it will not run on Lion.
    Good luck with everything.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

  • I have updated my iPad 2 to 7.0.2.  After syncing to iTunes I noticed that in Safari on my MacBook Pro one of the Bookmark tabs has been emptied.  Also, on the iPad I am getting a dark keyboard that stays on the screen no matter what is going on behind it

Lots of strange things happening after installing 7.0.2.  Mail and Safari routinely quit on me.  Keyboard appears for no reason and doesn't go away.  After syncing to iTunes on my MacBook Pro one of the bookmark tabs got emptied out.  Is there no one cracking the whip anymore at Apple?

Using iCloud to sync bookmarks between your Mac and iPad?
If so, on the iPad tap Settings > iCloud. Swich Safari off then back on.
On your Mac, open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Safari then reselect it.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync your bookmarks.
If you are using iCloud, don't sync Safari bookmarks on iTunes. That could be why the bookmark tabs got emptied out.
