Macbook OS X 10.5.8 been acting strange

My macbook has been acting very odd lately. A few weeks ago I had shut off the system to clean the screen and keyboard and then the laptop wouldn't turn back on. Oddly 3 days later I tried turning it on again and it booted and worked perfectly fine. But ever since this mishap I noticed that a few things were odd with the system. For instance, I can no longer just close the lid to the laptop so it can go into sleep mode otherwise the laptop completely shuts itself off. I also cannot restart without the system shutting itself off once and then it will restart itself again properly. Also, the laptop cannot go into hibernation mode if the battery goes dead, it'll turn on then shut itself off again and restart. Another strange thing lately is that the webcam will sometimes randomly turn itself on and won't turn off unless I shut off the system which I find very strange...
I also have a small portion of the hard drive set up as a windows hard drive and I did find a lot of spyware and malware on it and deleted it all, but is it possible maybe that my computer has been hacked in the 3 day period that it decided to shut itself off?

Hi,
Welcome to the    Discussions
I would start with how old is the battery ?
It should show a status icon towards the right in the Menu Bar - does this Indicate it is charged ?
It will also allow you direct access to the System Preferences > Energy Saver pane.
In here the Battery Tab should tell you how charged it is. (under the Disk and Screen Sleep times)
Are the Sleep times what you think they should be ?
I don't think your computer was "hacked" whilst Off.
There maybe more going on here caused by the Battery not keeping certain memory "alive".
I would also try a PRAM reset.
Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT PR Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
Others may join in with other thoughts.

  • Hi, my mac has recently been acting strange. First started about a week or so ago, where it was acting like it would get hung up; but would eventually fix itself. Now, I am having to restart it constantly just to entere a web address. Help please?

Can someone please help me to see if I can figure out what is wrong? I looked to see if there was any updates that I overlooked, however, it stated that all updates had been made. I am completely lost. Thank You.

You are in a situation where it may not be a big deal, or your hard drive could be failing and everything on your computer could be at risk. That means everything gets erased if you don't have a copy of it. You may want to make your first priority getting an external hard drive and making a copy of all your music, pics, movies, ect. while you still can, if you still can. It may turn out to not be a big deal, a directory issue or your'e out of space or something, but better to have a back up and not need it, than to lose everything that's important to you.
If you value your stuff, stop trying to use the computer and back it up, before you do anything else.
It sounds like you should then take it to an Apple Service Provider like an Apple Store.

  • My dock has been acting strange lately.

Whenever I open an application that isn't permanently on my dock, it doesn't appear on the dock and when I open an application that is permanently on my dock, such as Safari, the blue indicator light doesn't turn on and if I want to quit the application, I try right-click, "Quit Safari" but it doesn't show the option. My OS system is OS X 10.7.5.
For example there, I have Safari and iTunes open but none of them have the blue indicator light on.
And when I right-click, it doesn't show the usual windows open, "New Window" or "Quit" options.

  • HT4623 Ever since I upgraded my iphone 4s has been acting strange.

example is when I have a friend call the ring tone is wrong and the picture doesn't show up.
    How do I fix this?
    K

All the "apple" icons such as STOCKS, etc can't be deleted. I use itunes to move them all onto the last screen of icons that I have so I never have to look at them. Kind of dumb you can't delete even apple icons that you never use. I'd rather save the phone memory and use it for something else.

  • Iphone 5 Battery Charging Acting Strange

The last few days my Iphone 5 has been acting strange with charging the battery.  I will be charging it and it will not go past a certain number then if i unplug it a couple times or restart it then it says 100%.  It will be ok for a little while and then go through the same thing.  Yesterday my phone said 36% and a couple minutes later shut itself down because it was a 0%.  So the number is just not reading correctly.
Is this just as simple as changing the batter most likely?  Or something else, other than this the phone works fine as far as i can tell

Always try to charge iPhone when convenient for you. You can use iPhone right out of box, no problems, or you can charge it up if convenient. The best time for most users to charge iPhone is at night while they are sleeping so it is fully charged for the next day. The iPhone lithium battery is very versatile, so charge when convenient for you, it will not effect performance or life.

  • Safari's Tabs Acting Strange After 10.6.4 Update

    Hi guys,
After the 10.6.4 update Safari's tabs have been acting strangely. Say I have Apple.com open in one tab and I hit Apple-T to open a new tab. It then changes that tab (which Apple.com was loaded on) to the Top Sites, keeps the focus on this tab, then opens a blank tab right next to it. I effectively lose the page I was using and a blank one appears. Any ideas as to how to fix this?
    Thanks for the help!

    HI,
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If you still having problems...
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
And if you didn't repair disk permissions after you updated Safari, it's a good idea to do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • CarPlay Acting Strange

Since I got my Apple Watch on the 24th, CarPlay has been acting strange.  Here are the issues I've noticed so far:
I can not get Siri to activate in any way shape or form.  Previously, certain apps would activate Siri upon launch in the car.  For instance, opening the phone app would immediately have Siri ask me whom I'd like to call.  I was also able to use my "hands free" button on my steering wheel to activate Siri at any time.  Now, since I've had the Apple Watch, Siri never activates.
The podcasts app constantly causes Springboard to crash and restart.  This happens not only when playing a podcast, but sometimes just browsing them.
Music controls are hit and miss.  Sometimes the onscreen music playback controls work and sometimes I have to look at the Music glance on my watch to control the music playback.
Is anyone else experiencing these or other issues?
P.S. In case it matters, I've got a Pioneer Nex-8000 head unit in my car.  CarPlay was working very well before I got my Apple Watch, so I'm assuming this is an issue with iOS/CarPlay/Watch and not the head unit.

I have been working with computer since 72 and still do not understand them. All is working, for the time being. I will run it through its paces a few more time to believe that it straightened itself out.
I would still like to know if I am able to delete an apple application and reinstall it?

  • Powerbook acting strangely....help!

    Hello!
My Powerbook g4 17 has been acting strangely the past two days. It all started when I had both Safari and iPhoto open. I got the Beach ball of death and my computer froze (I had been getting the SBBOD on occasion, but never had it caused a full blown freeze before). I tried all the force quit commands and finally I had to manually shut it down. It had trouble restarting, it would chime but then it wouldn't get past the first screen with the grey apple symbol. I turned it off and let it "rest" overnight. The next day it turned on fine, but the computer's "thinking" noises sound different. More of a buzz now than the usual clicking and whirring noises. The power button also makes a strange "BEEEEOOOOooooop" noise when I turn it off, which is also new.
To make a long story short, I tried to run disc utility and it froze on me again when it finished. I had to hard start it (and again, and again, and again...)and it won't go past the first screen UNLESS I let it sit turned off for at least 5 minutes. Once I do manage to get it turned on, it acts fine for maybe a half and hour or so until it slows down (thinking gets labored) and freezes on me again.
Any ideas on what may be going on? I'm worried it's something really bad.....

    Thank you BGreg.
I have 27GB free out of my 80GB drive, so no issue there...
I tried to do the boot up with the OS X install cd witn no luck. I was on the phone with AppleCare last night for over an hour and after trying many different things, it seems I am going to have to mail it in for repairs.
Here I was hoping it'd be something simple.
And of course, I backed up as much as I could. I'm crossing my fingers!

  • IPhone 3GS Frrezing, Deleting stuff, acting strange

My 3GS has been acting strange the past week or two.  It is doing so many strange things that I'll just bullet and list them....
It freezes for 5-10 seconds, randomly.  Can't swipe to a new screen, press and buttons or anything.  Then returns to normal.
Push an App button and it's like I held in the button to delete or move icons.....
Sometimes pushing an App button doesn't load the App.  Takes a few times to get it to open.
When typing a text or email, it adds periods in randomly.  If I hit the delete button, it will sometimes just delete the text I just wrote.
There's a tiny gap at the top between the clock, battery, etc.... some black space.  Sometimes, the upper "bar" moves to the very top of the screen leaving no black space.  Not sure if I explained that too well.
I replaced the battery a few months ago because it would just shut off when it reached 50-60%.  Others have had the same problem.  Replacement went really smooth and it worked fine for at least a month or so.... so I doubt that's the culprit.
I have turned it off and on a few times.  Synced with iTunes a few times and no luck.  I have not restored yet.  Don't really know what Restore does but I am going to read up on it.
Any other ideas or is anyone having similar issues?  I search and found nothing....
    Thanks!
    Jerrod

My 3Gs is freezing on certain contacts (growing number and I believe they're all ATT customers.
To make matters worse...my daughter is a text addict... And most of the other texters just won't pay attention to my pleas that they calmer e.mail me, until the daughter's Saturday Wedding is over... So I can make an appt. At an Apple retailer to have a "genius" help me with this!!!! Everyone coming in for the rehearsal and Wedding is testing me! And I cannot open their message,  much less reply via this form of messaging!
I'm so unable to mess with this right now-
I called ATT tech support and we tried a couple of possible options to fix this and wound up with something that was  SO convoluted involving my PowerBook ( which was at home where I was NOT!) and a week later, here am, without reliable testing!  Did you get any results in your problem?!?

  • Mail acting strange in OS X Yosemite?

Since installing OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10) Mail (Version 8.0 (1990.1) has been acting strangely. It freezes and I have to force quit. Mail will prevent a shut down or restart unless I force quit it. I've been into Mail preferences and reset everything - including handling junk. Anyone else getting this? I've sent the report of each incident to Apple.

    pls try this
Select a mailbox, then choose Mailbox > Rebuild.

  • My macbook pro started acting strange after a safari reset. the mouse no longer: animates the dock, activates hot corners or selects pages from the 'top sites' page.

my macbook pro started acting strange after a safari reset.
the mouse no longer: animates the dock, activates hot corners or selects pages from safari 'top sites' (without a hassle). attempts to reset dock and hot corners from preferences has been fruitless
the mouse also gets 'stuck' in logic precipitating force quits.
i run osX 10.6.8 on a 2007 macbook pro that has had 2 motherboards replaced autumn 2010.
my troubleshooting has been: restart, pRam and safe boot, also checking a 'test' account to find the same issues extant.
pRam restart caused airport to quit and say there is no airport card, and wouldn't respond untill another reboot.
macbook pro 15" 2.4 GHz intel core duo.2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
i have treated this book with care, yet run logic pro studio to the limit of this book's abilities.
    what shoud i do?

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • My MBP has been acting odd since installing N wireless update.

Since installing the N wireless protocol on my MBP my machine has been acting weird. It fails to see wireless networks, the system preferences fails to open at times. OSX freezes, Force quit doesn't actually quit the programs after they have frozen. Basically its so bad i am thinking about re-formatting my machine and starting again, (its only a week old)
Am I the only one who has this?

    Well..that is a bummer....
I did notice something else, don't know if it makes sense or not, but if the mac crashes while connected to my Airport Express at home, the Airport Express stops responding and all of the clients that are connected to it stop getting access to the Internet until I unplug it and plug it back in.
When the issue first arose, I thought it was a problem with the AP express, but since it happens even more frequently when using other routers, I know that is not the issue. Besides, everything was fine until I installed the Wireless-N update. I wonder if there is any way to remove the update?
I'll keep playing with it, but hopefully they find a solution soon. Being that our problem is exactly the same, I would be surprised if no one else is having this issue as well.

  • Macbook backlight acting strange after Mavericks

I performed a clean installation of Mavericks the day after it was released, and ever since the backlight on my MacBook has been acting up. At first I thought it was just inactivity, but now today the backlight turned itself off, but the computer continued to operate. Due to being in an already bright room, there was enough ambient light to reflect and allow me to see that the display was still functioning and I could swipe between spaces with the trackpad.
Typically what has happened is the backlight will turn off for a moment, then turn back on, and the cycle repeats four or five times over a minute. Then it goes away for a while. Today it took about 30 seconds before the backlight turned back on. And it's always the gradual fading, as if it were going to sleep, never sudden off and on transitions.

This is a longshot, but try booting into the Safe Mode by booting while holding the Shift key down. When the Safe Mode boot finishes, reboot normally.

  • My macbook is acting strange?

Hello all, I'm using 2009 macbook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB ram) running OSX 10.5.8. Recently, my macbook's been acting pretty strange:
    1. The admin password stopped working. Normally, I created another working account for myself so that I won't accidentlally mess up with system files. Whenever I updated the softwares or installed new ones, I just typed in the admin password upon requested. However, the admin password stopped working two weeks ago. It just reported that the password was incorrect. I couldn't log in to the admin account as well.
    2. About the same time, I noticed that my HD free space was mysteriously increased from ~4 GB to 10 GB without manaully deleting any files.
    3. The time machine backup started to stall at a certain MB transferred. For instance, last week it stopped at "Backing Up: 307.6 MB of 1.4 GB" but currently at 286.9 MB of 1.4 GB. The time machine drive still has over 70 GB left.
My working account's still working fine but I have a feeling that it might be a problem with the HD, somethings got deleted or corrupted. What should I do or any diagnostic tools that can identifiy the problem? Should I replace the HD?
    Thank you very much
