Macbook, parallels, and dreamweaver

Hi. I'm thinking of getting a MacBook and Parallels so I can run Dreamweaver in XP. That's just what I'm thinking. I don't want to get a MacBook just to find out that Dreamweaver barely runs on it in Parallels, or not at all.
I was thinking of getting a 2.0 GHz MacBook with 2 gigs of ram. Does anyone else think that's enough to decently run Dreamweaver on Parallels? Or should I just run Dreamweaver in XP with Boot Camp? I'm sure running Boot Camp is probably the better choice but I do want to have both Mac and XP handy without having to reboot to switch between the two.
I will also possibly be running Photoshop in XP, granted, probably not at the same time as Dreamweaver. However, is this configuration with parallels enough?
I guess I should be looking at the MacBook Pro, but I'm not there yet. I'm just beginning (learning, in fact) so I don't really need the better stuff yet. If I can get away with a MacBook, so much the better.

Programs running under Rosetta definitely start slower and do run slower than their UB or Windows counterparts. But the more important question is whether the slower speed is actually going to have an impact in everyday use.
For example, Word being slower has no impact on my document creation or editing. I notice no impact on basic photo editing in Photoshop such as cropping, touch up, levels, and so forth but some filters are noticeably slower. Still, I've not been tempted to use Photoshop in Windows (even though I have it) because a) lost productivity booting back and forth with BootCamp would probably negate any speed advantage of PS in Windows, b) the slower screen redraws of Parallels Desktop would probably similarly negate much of the advantage, and c) I've found that muscle memory is highly ingrained with Photoshop!
In short, I'm not certain that the slower speeds under Rosetta emulation is enough to have any real affect in your use of DreamWeaver.
Yes, if you use your BootCamp partition from which to run Windows in Parallels Desktop, that partition would receive the malware picked up by Windows. For me, it is one of the major attractions of running Parallels from a container drive. I back up that drive once a week keeping the last 3 copies - ie the one that is a month old gets erased every week. Should I encounter a resistant piece of malware, getting back up and running will require erasing the container drive from my MacBook and copying the most recent (I hope!) backup from my external drive.

How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

MacBook Pro - no problem, it is an extremely popular computer for running that software. Just look at the Adobe demo videos of their products, most of the time you can see a MacBook Pro running the software in their video.
MacBook Air - should be just as good most of the time.
However, if you get involved in heavy Photoshop work like highly stacked layers/masks/channels, 16 bits per channel or up, or merging HDR or panoramas, the MacBook Pro may be better because it can take 16GB RAM while the MacBook Air can take only 8GB RAM.
Also, if you are going to do serious programming in XCode or Dreamweaver, you may find the MacBook Air screen to be too small for all of the code windows and tool palettes that you may want to open and arrange in those programs. The 15" Retina screen of the MacBook Pro will let you spread out your work and do less window switching. The 11/"13" MacBook Air screens are both smaller and non-Retina so not as sharp.
Even Photoshop is nicer on the 15" MacBook Pro because of the extra screen space for the image with less intrusion by the tool palettes.
In short, if you are a casual user the MacBook Air will be great. If you are a professional with a heavy workload the MacBook Pro may be more efficient overall due to the larger screen and higher RAM capacity.

  • Running parallels and Quick Books on a MacBook. MacProtector messed me up last week but I got it off Now I can't get Quick Books to open. Can anyone help?

I am running Parallels and Quickbooks on my macbook. After an unfortunate encounter with macprotector (I didn't install it) which I was able to get off my computer, I now cannot access Quickbooks. It is trying to open it (unsuccessfully) in my Disk Utility. Any suggestions?

I figured this out. There is an extra step now which I assume is from the iTunes update.  There is an option below where you check to sync Audiobooks to 'Include Audiobooks from Playlists'. I checked the playlist f and now my book is all the way on my phone instead of just pretending.
Seems redundant but what do I know...At least I can listen to my book finally.

  • Photoshop and Dreamweaver on the Stock MacBook Air 11" 2012 128gb 4gb

    Hi
I'm just about to start my second year of university and have a budget of £850 and was just wondering would Photoshop and Dreamweaver CS6 run on the stock MacBook Air 11" (2012) with 128gb and 4gb.
I already have a 21" iMac (2011) with 16gb ram to do the seriously heavy loads so the MBA would be for propering essays and light to moderate photo editing and to design templates for websites. I dont play games and I use the iMac to watch movies and I use my iPhone to listen to music.
any advice will be greatly welcome
    thanks

  • I have a new Macbook pro and need to run some Windows software, it appears "Parallel" should work well from what I've have read. Will I have any issues or problems accessing and printing from various printers on my Windows 7 network within Parallel?

I have a new Macbook pro and need to run some Windows software, it appears "Parallel" should work well from what I've have read. Will I have any issues or problems accessing and printing from various printers on my Windows 7 network within Parallel? Is Parallel in fact the best way to go?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Can a Macbook pro run Parallels AND Fusion?

I know this may not be the right forum, but I'll make it a quickie.
Will I damage my mbp if I install Parallels and Fusion? I would only use them one at a time for their own virtual machines -- but can having both on the same system cause damage to my precious mbp?
    thanks!

I had both installed and upgraded from Parallels 4 to 5. It erased my Parallels 4 install and replaced it (I just downloaded the demo of 5 to see if it was worth upgrading). Long story short, I hated Parallels 5 as it brought my brand new MacBook Pro to it's knees, and since it erased my Parallels 4 I uninstalled the whole thing. Now I'm using only Fusion 3 and it is quite nice. It's not as snappy as running bootcamp but since I have decided to run Windows 7 I'll have to wait until the compatible Bootcamp drivers are released before I move it to bootcamp.
That's just my observations. I thought Parallels 4 was pretty good but Fusion 3 is better. And I don't know why Parallels 5 was such a slug but I was very unimpressedin both the performance AND the fact that it completely obliterated my previous copy with no option but to start over with a fresh install.

  • Installing windows parallel and partitioning MacBook harddrive

I'm hoping this will be straight forward.
I've Windows Parallel program that I want to install on the MacBook 13" and want to
partition the MacBook drive so that it runs a good percentage of this (Windows Parallel) program.
But also leave enough space so that it can run OS Leopard on it and few programs without causing
    any conflicts.
Appreciate any thoughts as I want to load this in a few hours.
Do I need to do anything beforehand to partition the drive for Windows?
Also I'll be adding MicroSoft 2003 after WP is loaded.
    thanks in advance ~A~

Please explain what application that you're speaking of. There is a program called Parallels Desktop by which one may run ms windows on a Mac but your description doesn't match its behavior. If you've purchased a software package, please indicate the title of it so that the forum may be of assistance. -GDF

I have a new MacBook Pro and running Windows 7 on that side with Parallels.  My Windows side keeps locking up.  Help

You should be able to get the CS3 programs installed and running on the new pc since CS3 is spec-ed for Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  Downloading the programs does not require a serial number.  You can find them here:  Download CS3 products  but you will need the serial number to activate the programs.  You might be able to find that thru your Adobe account online.
You will not be able to install the CS5 Mac version on a PC and you won't be able to trade it to a PC version either due to it being an older version.  Trades are allowed only for the latest version (CS6)

  • Setting up new computer, eliminating Parallels and VM

My late 2007 MacBook pro (OS X 10.5.8) has a virtual WIndows XP machine using Parallels.  It came with iLife software and is backed up to an external hard drive using Time Machine.   It’s losing some functionality (optical drive, keyboard) so I bought a new-to-me Macbook pro (mid-2009 model, with OS X 10.8.2) which has additional software I would like to keep.  I’ve decided that I don’t need XP on the new MacBook Pro, so want to eliminate that when data is transferred.
If I use Time Machine to set up the new computer, I suspect that it will automatically partition the hard drive and give me Parallels and XP.  I also suspect that it will write over everything on the new machine and I’ll lose access to the new software programs (Word for Windows, etc.) that came with it.
So... How do I retain all the new software that came with the 2009 MacBook Pro, while transferring everything EXCEPT Parallels and XP from the 2007 MacBook Pro  - including  iLife which came installed on the 2007 MacBook Pro?

Thanks for clarifying about partitions, and Parallels as a disc image.  Very helpful.  Uninstalling Parallels should do the trick.
If I migrate the old machine to the new one, that should bring my iLife along.  But will it replace the OS X 10.8.2 with the older OS X 10.5.8?  Will it eliminate the new software currently on the new machine?
Alternatively, could I "migrate" and merge the TM contents of two different hard drives onto the new machine?  One thought I have is to buy a new, larger HDD, install it in the new machine.  Then migrate elements from each of the old hard drives: From the new machine migrate OS X 10.8.2 and the new software, and from the old machine migrate the iLife software and all my files, email, etc.  Is that possible?  If so, how to do partial migrations?

  • Windows 7 OEM parallels and Bootcamp, installation sequence?

So ive got a 2013 macbook air and planning on using the OEM licence to firstly create a bootcamp partition, and the having parallels run off the bootcamp partition. Now I understand I might have to go through the whole phone activation the second time. My question is ...what sequence should I use to activate.Should I activate parallels first after the installation of parallel tools or can I just activate bootcamp first????

    Karim.Foad wrote:
Ok wow that's cleared a lot up ....I've been researching this for the last few days , and getting mixed views with some saying windows will count the virtual machine as a separate computer and they have all sorts if activation problems .But for the second activation , in parallels , the long digit phone activation should be sufficient ?? Because I really don't look forward to explaining everything to a Microsoft Representative
    Over the phon haha!
This is why I originally suggested that you read the activation directions on the Parallels and Fusion sites. They address the issue of Windows thinking that the VM installation is a second installation of Windows when in fact it is not. This is because you are not installing Windows in Parallels you are only pointing to your single Bootcamp installation of Windows. This is an issue that has been addressed by the VM manufacturers.

    vivebk67,
FYI, I have the same issue.  I converted from MS Office 2010 to Mac Office 2011 by importing .pst files several months ago and I have noticed that many emails, which I originally received in MS 2010 but coverted to Mac 2011, show the paperclip as if there is an attachment.  But when I open the email, the attachment is not there.
At this point I cannot find any pattern as to why some converted emails retained their attachment and other emails appear to have retained their attachment but the attachment is not visible.
I can confirm that there actually is an attachment by opening up MS Office 2010, but that is a huge pain becasue I have to open Parallels to do that.  I have no issues with any attachments received in Mac Office 2011.
I spent an hour opening up a ticket with MS, sent them .pst files with examples and the guy was able to confirm that he could open the attachment in MS, but not Mac.  BUT, of course, I was told that I would not be apprised of any ticket updates and that the only way I would know if the issues was fixed was when I was finally able to view attachments that I was not able to view previously.

  • Parallels and Time Machine

I think I did wrong question
I have installed Parallels on my Macbook Pro, and I'm interested in buying a Time Machine Airport, my concern is whether Time Machine also makes me the automatic backup of my files have Windows in Parallels

No it doesn't .. Time Machine only works in the Mac and cannot usefully do anything for windows. It cannot even read the format.
Parallels will use a file for the windows partition, rather than using a true partition. This file can be seen by TM.  but it cannot back it up in a way that offers restoration. it is very important to exclude this file from Time Machine as it will be many GB in size and will change every time windows boots or saves even a 1KB file TM will be forced to save the entire windows virtual disk file.
You must backup windows from inside of windows.. this can be done to the Time Capsule if you buy one.. BUT the internal MSBackup on home editions cannot save to network drives.. so you will need to buy or download a suitable backup software.. there are thousands literally available for windows. Most work with network drives.

  • Unistalling vista in parallels and installing xp in boot camp

okay i have a macbook, running leopard. i currently have parallels running vista but i want to remove both and install boot camp and xp with a disk my friend has. i got my computer from macmall and so they installed vista and parallels.
can i remove vista and still be able to register it in the future as an authentic version? (i paid for it.)
is this possible (remove parallels and vista put on xp via boot camp)?
will i be able to use vista in the future if i install it?
please help me a bit the process too...
    thanks a lot

I just recently had to do this with Parallels and XP-SP2. I asked the same question, do you need to remove Parallels and the Windows install.
Yes. Some might argue no, but I did.
Cleared all of Parallels and then set up Boot Camp for the partition size required, installed XP-SP2 and followed up with Leopard DVD to do the Mac Drivers. All went well including the activation.
And, I had to go back and re-install Parallels to point to the Boot Camp install, which went well.
But, yes, a secondary activation was required, and a simple quick call finished it all off.
Please note, no call was necessary for the Boot Camp (re-)installation.
Despite the Vista differences, I would suspect it would work out the same with regards to activation.

  • Parallels and VPC

I have a new MacBook Pro with Parallels and need to install Windows on it. I wrote to Parallels tech help and asked if there was any way to get the Windows out of my old VPC, that I used in my old iBook. Got an answer suggesting that I use Parallels transporter to move the whole VPC into Parallels. My question is: I hated VPC because it was so incredibly slow, and was hoping Parallels on my new computer would work faster. Has anyone tried this routine of copying a VPC machine into Parallels, using their transporter? I don't really quite understand this. Would it mean I would still have to use VPC and it would still be slow? If I buy and install a new version of Windows on Parallels, will it work better and faster? Thanks for any advice.
    <Post Relocated by Moderator>

VPC was slow because it had to (literally) translate from PPC to Intel code and back again.
Now that the Mac is Intel native, VPC is no longer necessary.
Depending on how you bought VPC, it may or may not have shipped with a separate Windows installer CD, but I think it's old enough, it may not have SP2 in the installer.
Parallels allows you to run windows in a window (just like VPC) but at Intel native speed. This allows easy data sharing between OS's
Becasue your machine is Intel based, you can boot your machine directly to either Windows or OS X.
If I understand the process, running windows through parallels will be slightly slower than booting direct to windows. (because windows will use all of both processors if booted directly; through parallels it does not do that.)
