MacBook- Plastic on base breaking/cracking off

I have noticed many people with the early edition of MacBooks reporting that the plastic breaks off the base on each side of the track pad... I too have the same problem. It appears that the small plastic supports above the screen hit the base and weaken the plastic, until small strips about the same size as the to supports loosen and break off. I don't suppose Apple will do anything about this design flaw if your MacBook is out of warranty... Just wanted to make people aware of the issue again and .... maybe put some other screen/cover support between the top and bottom before closing the top. Don't know if the issue has been solved on the newer models.... An Apple fan from the beginning, but very frustrated with this design flaw.

I haven't had that problem on my Core 2 Duo Macbook (purchased April 2007, I think.) My wife's older Core Duo Macbook had the problem you described, but she took it a Genius Bar and they replaced the broken part under warranty. In my experience, Apple will sometimes fix problems like after the warranty ends, as well.

Do you mean when the water was spilled on it, it shut down?  That would indicate a major internal short occured.
Really, I'd say you need to take it into Apple or an Apple authorized repair center and get it looked at.  Odds are you've got a significantly damaged device that will require professional repair and parts replacement to get working again.

  • I need iMovie but can't upgrade to Mavericks (on a MacBook plastic case early 2008, running 10.6.8)

I used to have IMovie on my MacBook (plastic case early 2008), running 10.5.8.
Then I upgraded to 10.6.8, and added extra memory, it's 2 GB now. Thus I lost  iLife, that I used to have.
I tried to purchase iMovie 11 but it requires 10.9 or higher.
Unfortunately I cannot upgrade, because my Mac Book is too old (only aluminium case ones from late 2088 can upgrade).
    So...what should I do?
Look for older versions of iLife/iMovie, but where do I get them?
Or can I get iMovie 6 and the rest of iLife from my old installation disks (10.5.8) of when I purchased the MacBook? And how do I do that?

    Thanks!
iLife '09 apparently requires 4 GB and I only have 2. I'll see if I can find the DVD that had to be in my original machine box.

  • Macbook air (11", mid 2011) turns off randomly

My macbook air 11" (mid 2011) turns off randomly. Sometimes, in the middle of something a black screen. After a few seconds it starts up again, on using a key. It restarts in the application I worked on before. Strange!

Do you have put hard drive to sleep when possible checked? Try unchecking it.Have you tried repairing permissions in utilities? You could also do a pram reset. Command/Option/P/R keys at startup for three chimes.

  • HT1338 my macbook pro has been running hot off and on

My macbook pro has been running hot off and on for the last couple of days

Are you running andy anti-virus or "cleaning" software? Both can shorten battery life and run up the temps.
Take a look at this Apple article:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
Note in Step 3 you need to make a change if running Mavericks. In Mav, Activity Monitor's "Show All Processes" function moved from the application window to the application menubar:
Setting to "All Processes" is the only sure way to catch some suspects. Not noted in the article is this: AM won't tell you much if you run it shortly after a restart. Use your computer as normally as possible for at least a half-day before running the test. Also not clear is that you should be looking for any process that uses more than about 10 percent of the cycles. I've checked a lot of Macs with AM and, assuming you quit any user applications you started (other than AM) nothing should be a percentage larger than a single digit in a healthy Mac.

i havent backed it up on computer or icloud i synced it with my macbook and accidently deleted them all off my macbook and now its gone of my phone!! help me

You'll have to restore them from the most recent backup you made before you deleted them.
When computers and iOS devices are "synced" together, whatever you do on one device is synced to the others. You deleting them off your Dads phone made the same occur on your phone. That's how it is supposed to work.

Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery

  • Macbook Pro Down Arrow key fell off.

Macbook Pro Down Arrow key fell off. Any DIY, or does it have to go to the store? I'm fairly certain the local MacAuthority has a fix, but i'd like to get it done now. I saw a 30 minute long youtube video about it, but he doesn't mention the arrow keys. The only thing similar is the small function keys. And I don't think it's the same mechanism.

    Hello brooklinekilla,
I would be concerned too the up arrow key on my keyboard was not working.  I found an article that can assist with further isolating and troubleshooting issues with the built in keyboard.  I recommend following the steps under the section titled, "Some keys don't work as expected" in the following article:

  • So my MacBook pro, after I turn it off from "sleep mode" for over an hour....will make a cracking sound for a little while when I turn it back on. It sounds like something is burning internally or something. Help

I need to know why it's doing this, thanks

    Hi
I dont know why the first message appeared but usually this message is shown when the HDD recovery or Recovery disk would be started.
Do you have some recovery disk in the CD/DVD drive?
Check this otherwise I have no explanation for that
Maybe you should backup the data and should recover the notebook again
    Would be worth a try

  • Why does my white macbook keep on producing new cracks?

I have had my white macbook for just over a year now, I have never once dropped it. When I take it to school I put it in a sleeve thing. I'm really careful but I have been noticing that cracks are appearing. There is one at the top right where a little bit of plastic came off... same problem with where you rest your hands.
There are also lots around the fan and the bottom.
Does apple cover these charges?? What should i do, it looks ugly

    Thanks for actually replying!
Basically, I am literally like 10 days past my year thing. CRAP!
But I phoned them last night and I have an appointment on Saturday and hopefully they will be nice...
    Thank you though

  • Awoke to find MacBook display distorted. No cracks/Spillage

    Hi guys,
So I had my macbook pro screen replaced last April. Everything was fine until the other day.
I left it on all night, (I think I was rendering something in final cut pro, or forgot to turn it off) I woke up to this.
Then the next day, some improvement.
There is not a crack in the screen. No spillage, so I'm mystified.
I'm thinking screen connection bad? or hard drive/video card issue?
I spent $300 from CoreHelp for this replacement months ago. Upon receipt I noticed very minor dents on the back shell.
I may return it to CoreHelp and TRY to get them to replace it for free, since it's clearly faulty.
I'm just curious as to why this might have happened, since in the past this always occurs from a crack in the
    screen.
Could it possibly be repaired instead of being replaced again?
Thanks so much in advance for any info or suggestions.

maybe it got heated due to sunlight or charging too much?

  • Charger cord and macbook plastic question

First question. My charger cord seemed to get pretty hot near the connector and slowly split and melted, revealing a bare wire. Now the connection is getting flaky and I have to keep it in a certain position to keep it working. I had it replaced before, so I went into the apple store and tried to have it replaced again but was told to buy a new one as my warranty was up (which is odd because my warranty was up the last time I had it replaced). Is it safe to continue using it?
My second question is about the plastic on the MacBook. Over time a bit of the plastic has broken off the edges. I was told this was a common problem with plastic MacBooks. The person who uses it the most says she is getting shocked by the places where the plastic is missing. I don't know whether this is electricity from the laptop or just static. She says it's most commonly the a spot above the screen and sometimes to the lower right of the keyboard. Is there any way to cover these up?

  • HP DV6 Base Enclosure Crack

    Hi All,
Need your help i am having HP DV6-6165tx and i am having problem with my base enclosure. It is having crack 2 months back i seen a crack near by the subwoofer. And i tried to fix that but the plastic was so delicate that it got worse so i used
(M Seal) industrial grade epoxy compound to make the exact design to cover that broken plastic and hide that with colourful  tape. But now again i am having one more crack near by the DVD drive. I am the only person who is using the laptop and let me assure that the laptop never fell or hit to something that will cause this breakage. Now i am not sure whether i should call HP for the replacement or not cause they might cover this in physical breakage but as i already told this is not physical breakage. So want to ask what should i do and feeling that why i bought this laptop i whould have gone for dell.

    Hello Shivesh,
The case has cracked on your laptop.
The only thing that I can suggest is to call HP and tell them that you want to send it in for repair.
I’ve heard in some cases they will send the laptop to the repair center and let the repair technicians decide if the repair was accidental or not.
If they decide that it is accidental, they will ask you if you want to pay for the repair or not.
Here is a link to the phone number to call HP.
Let me know how everything goes.
    Have a good day.
