MacBook Pro 1.83GHz or 2GHz

Just in general which one do you think is the better value and which would you prefer. The price diference as you know is around $500 plus tax. Do you think what you get with the upgraded version is worth the price (2Ghz, 1gig Ram, and 100GB Hard Drive? I plan on running normal mac programs as well as boot camp with such programs as audtion, photoshop, etc. I am planning on using about 15g for boot camp with the buffer bringing it to 20G. What does everyone think?
Cheers!
John

I just bought two 1GB Corsair "Value Select" SO-DIMMs. One was inadequate and caused repeated hardware resets. The other one appears to be OK, but I'm loathe to keep it and plan to return them and buy from a source with a better reputation, even if their prices are higher. (But $300 for a 1GB SO-DIMM from Apple? What is it, solid gold?)
By the way, I should add that Apple's hardware test, which I ran three times, showed no trouble with this RAM, but MemTestOSX (http://memtestosx.org/) quickly led to the resets whenever the marginal SO-DIMM was installed.
Search the MacBook Pro forums for Corsair and you'll find (as I should have before buying) that my experience was shared among several people.

  • Macbook Pro 1.83ghz Woes - continiously being fixed - never working :(

I have a Macbook Pro 1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo - with lots of problems.
Back in November, it had problems with the Fans making a clunking / grinding noise and - the fans were replaced as well as the LogicBoard... This worked for up until a few weeks ago and then the right fan started playing up with the same issue and MBP was getting extremely hot - fans were running at 6-7000 RPM - even though iStat Pro isn't completely accurate - it was showing the .c temperature running at 85 degrees centigrade - pretty hot!!!
So 3wks ago, the right hand fan was replaced as well as temperature sensor on the Logicboard. Once fixed this worked for 3 days and then the fans went crazy and the MBP went stupidly hot again - right fan going crazy, rattling and clunking.
Installed Leopard 10.5.2 update > asked to restart > then HD failed to boot > No OS available etc. Took to be repaired, right fan replaced again and internal HD replaced.
Got the laptop back after parts replacement and testing, worked for a few hours and then right fan started its old tricks but then the left fan started doing the same - now both fans are whirring and making grinding noises AND the HD makes clunking noises (like the heads are slipping) when the disk gets busy!!
What can I do now? I'm gonna send it direct to Apple rather than this ****** 3rd party Apple Center that continuously fails to fix this Laptop.
Hopefully Apple can sort this out for good
    Chris

This is sounding more and more like a lemon. I'd call AppleCare, tell them of your experiences, and if they won't replace your machine, ask to be patched up to Customer Relations and get a case number. This being a user to user board all we can do is offer you sympathy. Now if you are at a stage where you just got back the machine and it hasn't yet failed we can offer some tips to prevent failure.
    AppleCare can be reached here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
And don't give in to any excuses. Just take it through the chain until you get the response that satisfies you.

  • SLOW going on Aperture 3.1 on MacBook Pro 1.83ghz

Ok so recently upgraded to Aperture 3.1 and it is as slow as molasses. Simple editing tasks not even in fullscreen mode are painfully slow--adjusting exposures, recovery, highlights, shadows, etc. I have to shutdown all other open programs and cancel all background tasks in Aperture i.e. thumbnail processing or whatever and still it crawls. The CPU usage in Activity monitor consistently shows between 100 and 180% when actively working on single images. Has Aperture outgrown my trusty MacBook Pro or is something wrong here folks? I upgraded thinking it would be better optimized for my older system but my post production times are seriously crippled. Any suggestions for what might be going on? Thanks in advance!

Your 2006 laptop is an early Core Duo before the Core 2 Duos. At 1.83 GHz clock speed and max of 2 GB RAM Aperture performance will be poor. Sorry.
As a frame of reference Geekbench ranks your MBP at about 2300, my slightly newer C2D MBP at ~3000, and a modern i7 MBP at ~6000.:

Looks like it is time for us to upgrade. Me especially, because even though it works, my box is full of hot chocolate...

  • Issues with DVD Player 4.6.1. on MacBook Pro 1.83GHz 15'inch

I'm having problems with the DVD Player 4.6.1 version. When I insert a dvd the application doesn't start, it completly ignores the dvd. The icon shows up on the desktop screen but doesn't run. I tried to change on the Preferences Pane to open the application but keeps ignoring it. DOES ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO CHANGE OR SOLVE THIS PROBLEM!!! ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED!!!

    A much to late comment....
First thing I did when I bought my MacBook Pro was purchase an iSkin and covered my keyboard with it. If it get's grubby it's easily cleaned.
And never use something wet on any keyboard...tower or MacBook (the latter being much more expensive to deal with). On a Mac book, if water, anything wet, gets in the keyboard it can fry other components....much better having Apple Repair fix it right.

  • Macbook pro 1.83ghz

I was wondering from which weeks are these macbooks(1.83mghz).
    how good are them?
    thank you

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
we don't and can't know what week they're from (yet). if you can come up with the first 5 digits of the serial number from one you're considering, we would know. the first five digits will be W86xx, and the xx there is the week number....
many people have machines w/ single-digit week numbers that work perfectly. there is not in general a strict correlation between week number and some issue....
    cheers

It looks like a GPU issue.  Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  Bring a copy of the crash report with you.

  • Macbook Pro 1.83ghz Core Duo - Boot Disks

Hello. I have misplaced my startup disk. Any chance I could paypal someone some money in order to get a burned copy mailed to me? The apple store doesn't have any.
    Thanks!

Call Apple tech support. They can send you a set for a reasonable fee.

  • How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?

Hey, I know there are other posts on what enclosure you can use and if it's a possibility, but I haven't seen any that tell me how I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, I am wondering if this really is a good idea, using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive? In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. I use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9, Office, and Photoshop.... My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15.4' 2.2ghz quad core i7 8gb RAM. Oh yeah and a mother thing is, I think I should get an enclosure that has a thunderbolt port with usb, what are your thoughts?

How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?
Get an externel enclosure at the same time.
    You can order from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner,  to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD.  Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup.

  • Triple monitors with Macbook Pro Mid-2014

Despite having three video ports (two Mini DisplayPorts and one HDMI) I can't get three monitors (HP EliteDisplay E231, 1920 x 1080) to work with my brand new Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.2GHz with the Intel Iris Pro video controller. I've seen videos on youtube of people successfully connecting three monitors to older 2013 MBPs. What am I doing wrong?
I don't understand what the issue is, the Intel Iris Pro can address over 1GB of memory, that's more than enough to drive 6.2 million pixels, and the thunderbolt 2 ports are 20 Gbit/s each!
Multi Stream Transport seems to be broken in Mac OS X. I've also looked at USB 3.0 Video Adapters, but there are no Thunderbolt to USB hubs, and it appears that Apple broke all the drivers for DisplayLink adapters. I've even tried a Matrox triplehead2go dp edition, but even that doesn't work correctly, the matrox controller software won't let me drive all three monitors at 1920x1080.
I have an HP EliteBook 9470m with an Intel HD 4000 that has no problems driving these three monitors.
Seriously, what the ****? All I want is three monitors to work.

Yes that is exactly the configuration I used, these are the cables I purchased from amazon:
    StarTech.com 6 ft Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 Adapter Cable M/M - DisplayPort 4k with HBR2 support
Gefen DVI to HDMI Cable 6 feet Male-Male

  • MacBook Pro (2011) won't display 2560x1440 native resolution on external monitor

I have the new MacBook Pro 15inch with 2.2Ghz quad core and an external NEC PA271W Monitor with a 2560x1440 native resoultion. I have them plugged together via the dual-link DVI-D cable but the MacBook pro will only recognize 1920x1080 as the max resolution on the NEC monitor. How can I output the max 2560x1440 resolution to the monitor?
The MacBook Pro is left open for dual screen view. Please help. Thanks!

I am surprised no one asked you the following question regarding your response.
What if I don't what 2 displays and I only want to support the external monitor? Can I be in extended mode and have only 1 display?
The reason why I ask is because I am going to buy a dock for my MacBook (2012). The dock forces the MacBook to close thereby rendering the internal display useless.
I think what I am after is some sort of "extended to external" mode.

  • Macbook Pro A1150 freezes, intermittently doesn't boot, replaced HD...

I have a Macbook Pro 2006 core duo, 2ghz, 2 gig ram. It has worked fine for years and i've been very happy with it.
I noticed a lot of freezing a few months ago and the original 120gig hd finally gave up. I managed to save my files before this and purchased a 500gig hd to replace it.
I switched the hd's, installed Snow Leopard and it worked great, loads of free space and a fast hard drive. Then around 5 days later the same problems started...
It would freeze up with the spinning wheel and force me to reset the machine. Then occasionally it wouldn't boot. Eventually it got to an unusable state and the dreaded flashing ? folder appeared upon startup...
Yet again it seemed the HD had given up on me.
I bought another hard drive, brand new 500gb, 7200... and switched them again. It worked fine, but this time only for an hour or 2, then the same problems began.
If I don't use it for a while (a day or so), then it works perfectly for around 30 minutes, then it freezes and won't start up again.
This is what confuses me. I've run the apple hardware test and it finds no faults. The only thing is the HD disappears sometimes during scans and obviously crashes the system.
This is what I don't understand. If there was a logic board fault then I don't see why it would work so perfectly for a period of time and then require a "reset period" of a few hours until it will successfully boot up again. I could take it into an apple store, but being an old model and also after having replaced the HD myself and fans I don't know how they would react lol.
If anybody has any suggestions I would love to hear them as i'm very confused about this.
I'm thinking it could be something as simple as the HD connector cable, or it could be the logic board.
    Thanks

    Hi c,
It sounds like you're ok doing minor surgery. Why not open it up again and make sure of the connections? The HD cable/connector does sound like a possibility (as does DaddyPaycheck's idea about the issue being heat related). If you don't find anything by checking things inside, why not make an appt with the "genius" bar and have them look at it? The worst thing that can happen is they can say "no."

  • How much could I get for my MacBook Pro?

I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro (November). 2.2GHz, 200GB HDD, 4GB RAM, and I was wondering if anyone knew how much I could get for it. The video card is slowly dying too and I wanted to trade this computer and spend some extra money to get an ipad 2 16GB.

  • How to increase Macbook Pro speed

    Hello,
I have a 2011 15" Macbook Pro with a 2.2Ghz Core i7, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, Dual Graphics which I use mostly for Photo/Video editing and work on my digital photography business.
For this purpose I have Photoshop CS5.1 and also run Windows 7 using the latest Parallels 8 software.
I find its plenty fast enough when running one or two programs but when switching between Windows and OS and having Photoshop, Bridge, Explorer, Proshow, iMovie and other things open at the same time, the computer can understandably get sluggish and can even freeze up for a minute or two sometimes.
My question is, what would be the best way to speed up and help the Macbook Pro cope?  Would adding more RAM memory or a SSD be the best route to take?
I'm not expecting it to run everything at the same time and have lightning speed, but just wonder if there's something short of getting a mortgage to by a completed specced up version, I can do to improve it.
    Thank

What Kappy says, or simply run only one huge performance program at a time.
For this purpose I have Photoshop CS5.1 and also run Windows 7 using the latest Parallels 8 software.
I find its plenty fast enough when running one or two programs but when switching between Windows and OS and having Photoshop, Bridge, Explorer, Proshow, iMovie and other things open at the same time...
Run either CS5 or Windows 7, not both at once.
If your taking screenshots out of iMove for instance, do those first, then save them to the desktop. Then quit it and open Photoshop and do that, then quit and open Windows and transfer them there.
Just plan out your behavior, not have everything open and go random cookoo switiching between them constantly.
You don't have that sort of performance machine, it's only a laptop. To do what you want all the time, intense multitasking, really needs a MacPro, a SSD boot drive and 80 GB's of RAM.
You see, even if you put 16GB of RAM in there, over time Apple and developers are going to bloat their code more and more, especially with 64bit processors to force hardware turnover.
Also with laptops the performance will be intentionally hobbled because of the laptops limited cooling ability.
Right now you might be able to run 4-5 programs at once with 16GB of RAM, but that's not going to be the case next year when 10.9 comes out and newer software.
So the least expensive option is to plan your behavior, because multi-tasking too many programs really isn't efficient, your brain really only can handle one or two things at a time.

  • Macbook pro & vodafone 3G PCMCIA card-how can I use this?

    Hi
I have recently bought a macbook pro and love it but I need a way of using my company vodafone 3G PCMCIA card on the move. Do you know of a compatible USB card holder I can slide the vodafone 3G card into or a 3G mobile solution that fits the funny express card slot (that is available in the UK for me to use). How are all of you making out who used a vodafone 3G card with a G4 15" powerbook like I did now you own a macbook pro?
Happy to buy an adapter or even look into a new 3G internet provider but it must be available in the UK and work with my macbook pro?
    All ideas appreciated.

I don't know if there is a PCMCIA adaptor for use with the MacBook Pro (or any portable.) However, here's some things to check into:

  • Macbook Pro 1.83

I want to get a new hard drive for my old Macbook Pro 1.83Ghz.
What do I look for when looking for a new hard drive?
    ATA or SATA?
What is the maximum size that I can put in the the older 1.83Ghz model, and the maximum RPM? Any suggestions on a good hard drive? Can I take it to the apple store and have them install it? Or a local tech store?
Also I just installed Leopard and I heard that there are problems with the older macs and leopard. And that apple released a video drie update this month, I can't seem to find it though.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You need to get a SATA, or Serial ATA hard drive. The PATA, or Parallel ATA is for the older PowerBooks and iBooks.
There is a huge variety of drives that will work. Two good places to look are Other World Computing and Newegg. Two good brands are Western Digital and Seagate, which now offers a 5 year warranty now. I think you can go for 7200 RPM for faster performance, or 5400 RPM for greater capacity. I don't thing there is a limit on how many GB's, but you can get more GB's with 5400 RPM drives. I think up to 320 GB but I'm not sure.
Are you still under warranty? If so, be sure that installing a new drive won't void anything. I don't know if the Apple Store would install it or not, but an Apple authorized repair facility should be able to. Or you may be able to, especially if you are out of warranty. I think that ifixit has instructions:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
The only problems that I have heard of with Leopard are on the Power PC platforms like the G4 machines, where not all of the Leopard features will work. And Leopard is not supported on a G3 although people are looking at ways to make it work. It should be fine on any Intel machine.
Hopefully there will be a lively discussion on hard drives to help you to decide.
    Good luck!
