MacBook Pro 10.4 won't install 10.5, not original optical drive

Hello. I know the answer to the first part of this question. I have a 1st gen MacBook Pro (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo), with 10.4.11 on it. I just last week upgraded the internal HD to one with a larger capacity. Went to install Leopard, and guess what? It says it cannot install on this Mac. I check this on the KB, find out it's probably because it is not the original optical disk inside anymore. Joy.
OK, my question is this: At the time I had the HD upgraded, I had the original HD taken out and installed in a housing to make it a USB external drive. Can I somehow install Leopard on that drive, then clone it back over to the one in my MBP? Using Carbon Copy Clone on something similar? Please advise.

OK, I guess I didn't list the problem as clearly as I should have...
I have the Leopard CD in the CD drive. It sees it fine. I click on the installer, and it starts. I get the screen that asks what language I want, I choose English, then it starts its check of the system, and about ten seconds later, it comes back and says it cannot install on this Mac.
Here's the Install Log:

Then, before I quit the installer, I choose the external drive as my startup. It restarts, I launch the installer again, it asks to restart the Mac. OK, I figure since I have the external drive now selected, it will boot that and start the install. It doesn't. It seems like the install CD doesn't want to kick in on the external drive.
Looking at the log above, any ideas? Thanks for all the help here! If all I wanted was to use the external USB drive to boot, it does that, so it is a bootable drive.

my macbook pro early 2012 won't install release version of yosemite after being in the beta test, anyone else having any issues with this?

Received an email from apple saying thank you for being in the beta test and they tell you to download the release version from the mac app store and install it. Done this twice and it says installed successfully after rebooting twice and doing the usual install of a new OS. However when it boots up and opens your desktop it still has the Feedback assistant installed and continuity and all the new features do not work at all. Making me assume that the final release has not installed at all. Spoke to apple on the Phone and they Don't know how to solve it. Except for doing a fresh OS Install. Which i would rather not do, but might have too. currently backing up my Mac as we spec to do it

  • MacBook Pro attempts to place a NON-EXISTING disc into its optical drive several times, immediately after being opened & woken up, every time...

About a week ago, my mother tried to place a DVD into my MacBook Pro while it was still closed & sleeping. Of course it didn't anything, but allowed her ignorant self to push the disc quite far into the disc drive. Once opened & woken up, the disc drive responded & operated normally, allowing my family to enjoy another great episode of Hanks & Speilberg's Band Of Brothers... UNTIL, the following day I opened it up & it began to make that "sucking a disc into its slot" noise, quite a few times before quitting... It hasn't damaged my MacBook Pro to my knowledge, I even put the DVD back in to insure that the drive hadn't been broken, but continues this process EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to open up & utilize my top-of-the-line Apple product. I've tried to restart/shut down my notebook, but this hindrance proceeds to linger. Also, I've began to worry that the amount of times the optical disc drive performs this mechincal process could cause future damage. Furthermore, it's a bit of a nuisance when trying to stealthly get on my MacBook Pro at night and end up waking up everyone... I have also upgraded to OX X Mavericks 10.9.1, could partake in the problem at hand? I would greatly appreciate suggestions & hope someone knows the direct solution to this problem!
Thank you for your time Apple Support Community, I truly appreciate it...

Damage was done when your computer fell.  Your warranty if you have one and Apple Care do not cover accidental damage.  Your only alternative is to take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.
NOTE:  If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with.   They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Please??? :-)

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.

  • Updated to latest operating system on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

Updated to latest operating system OS X Mavericks on MacBook Pro and now won't let me drag files onto a flash drive.

The Flash Disk must be NTSF formatted. Writing to NTFS requires 3rd party drivers (Tuxera, Paragon). Reading from NTFS however does not require these. So install NTFS drivers, or format the drive in FAT32 from Disk Utility.
    Hope this helps :-)

    Ok...
So I bought my MacBook Pro second hand, and it came with no installation discs, but I got Mountain Lion and had it installed and decided to back it up to a disc in case of this scenario. I followed some instructions to make a bootable disc and used it to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion back when I first got it.
My problem is that without the boot partition of my MacBook's hard drive it doesn't seem to want to boot the disc.
Since I didn't want to buy a disc and I don't have another MacBook or know anyone near me that does, I decided to download a hackintosh iso and use it along with my other laptop to install iPC 10.5.6....this installed successfully and my hopes were that my MacBook would be able to boot it, so I reinstalled my MacBook's hard drive and to my surprise it booted, although not normally. Since it is hackintosh it has some rewritten boot features so it's not a true OSX, but it is fully functional. Since I finally had OSX booted I figured I was in the clear and would be able to install Mountain Lion from this, but then I found out that you have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later in order to install Mountain Lion.
Now I'm stuck with a hactintosh version of Lion and still no way to get back to Mountain Lion, is there anything I can do now that I have a functional OSX installation?

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro, How can I install Windows 7 without an Optical Drive?

For clarity:  I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro.  I recently decided to upgrade to a Crucial SSD drive, double the ram (8 gigs), and remove the optical drive in favor of using my old drive as a back up.  I am also currently running Yosemite.
I want to install Windows 7 onto my SSD, using bootcamp.  Unfortunately I no longer have an optical drive installed, which makes things difficult as Bootcamp does not even give me the option to create a bootable USB.
Now, this is where things get kinda fuzzy:
MId 2010 macbooks use EFI, and are quite capable of booting from USB.  How do I know?  Because I booted from a USB drive in order to do a fresh install of Yosemite on my SSD.
I have read mutliple forums and threads with claims that folks have had no problems doing this on 2008 Macbook Pros running Snow Leopard.  However, what seemed to be required was some clever .plist modding.  I have used both text wrangler, and x-code to do this, unfortunately upon booting of bootcamp, bootcamp instantly crashes.  Naturally, I can restore bootcamp because I made backups of the .plist file.
It would seem that modffying the .plist file assumes that the option to create a bootable USB device is grayed out.  In my case, it is non existent.
I have also read that folks have had success using rEFIt, however rEFIt has been forked to rEFIned, and the developer of rEFIned made mention on his site that Yosemite handles booting differently than previous versions of OSX.
WIth that, I was hoping that some kind person could explain to me whats going on, what I am missing, and what I can do to make this happen just shy of tearing down my MBP and reisntalling the Optical Drive and dusting off my Win 7 disc.
Also, my Model Number/Bootrom is MBP 6,2.
    Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your reply, and the information.  This is what I came up with:
I added the strings as instructed, however when I went to sign the script in terminal, I was told:
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: replacing existing signature
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: code object is not signed at all
    In subcomponent: /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/info.plist
Also, here are screen captures of the lines that I added.  Mine are the top string entries:
Thank you for your help, thus far!
