Macbook Pro 10.5.8- cursor disappears and freezes, iphoto editing goes beachball every time
Hi. I have looked for hours but cannot find exact solutions for these issues (or ones that I can understand), so I am sorry to be repeating what are apparently common problems. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.8 with 4 GB of memory. The first problem is intermittent in that occasionally, the cursor disappears then freezes up, and I have to use the keyboard to navigate. If I run my finger around the mouse pad for what seems like forever, it will move a little but is very uncoordinated. I can push the cursor in a general direction, but it overshoots the area I'm trying to move to. Sometimes, a restart will fix it. Other times, it eventually starts working again; how, I don't know. I've read lots of theories and solutions, but honestly they're all "reconfigure this," "reinstall the pram," "replace the logic board," "backup, delete, and install such and such," and I have no idea what half of it means. I run the basic software updates regularly, have deleted some unused apps and emptied the trash. No idea what a cache is or how to empty one...
The second problem is with iphoto ('09 version 8.1.2. 424), and it happens consistantly. When the editing features are used, it goes beach ball for several seconds, especially when using "retouch." I don't use cloud or iLife11 or anything that didn't come with the computer.
Any advice to a girl who understands very little about computers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have someone look at your machine, discuss upgrading the operating system to 10.6.8 as it will run all your currently installed software (10.7 may not and require more memory, new software purchases)
Also to set up a TimeMachine backup system too.
We can only help those who can help themselves, some need someone to assist them in person.
It's no problem, I don't do my own dental or car work, I turn to those who can assist me with that.
Good Luck

Macbook Pro - Late 2008 - Hard-drive Noise and Freezing
I bought my Macbook Pro in the latter part of 2008 and I haven't had any problems with it until a week ago when I started hearing what I believe to be the hard drive (the lower right portion just to the right of the track pad). During this time, I could still move the cursor around but I could not click on anything and all applications opened froze. This would occur every couple of hours or so, after which I would have to restart my Macbook Pro. Does anyone know what could be the problem and how I can go about solving this? Thanks!!!
Lately there have been quite a few debates on the hard replacement issues with MBP's and from what I have seen they mostly are around the power consumption of the drives being not compatible..
So it's been many days now I'm recommending people this drive :
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-2-5-Inch-Internal-WD5000BEKT/dp/B003TOE4PQ
It's one of the least power hungry drives on the market and is one of the highest performers as well.
It's 7200 rpm and a whopping 500GB for 70-80 dollars is quite interesting .
if you buy the drive and hesitate to replace don't worry it's a 5 minute super easy task and you will find plenty of help if you report back here
I hope I could be of help -
Macbook Pro 10.7 - Suddenly extremely slow and freezes
Hi, I've had my Macbook for about a year now and never had any problems up until now. All of a sudden today I turned on my Macbook Pro (running 10.7.1) and it took about a minute and 20 seconds to boot up. Once the desktop background picture shows up, the dock will come up about 5 seconds later, then the top bar 5 seconds later, then all of the icons on my desktop about 5 seconds later. If I click on ANYTHING the spinning beachball will come up and then changes back to the mouse icon in about a minute. I can't open any applications in the dock or open any folders, nothing happens and then the beachball comes back. I have tried booting in safe mode and that seems to work okay, but still a little slower than normal. Checked the activity monitor and nothing major seems to be going on. Reset PRAM, nothing changed. Checked disk utility and everything was fine. If anyone has any idea what might be wrong, please help me out here. I appreciate it, and thank you!
This seems like a very common issue! I purchased the OS X Lion the very next day after its release.. used it for a few days on my Macbook Pro.. I also updated all my applications (adobe, office, ilife etc) to make it run smoothly and compatible on the Lion.. but after a month or so, my machine became like the first macintosh Mr. Jobs made.. VERYYY SLOOWW!!!!! it would take 5-7 minutes to boot up, and the dock wud also take time!! The beach ball occupied my screen so much time, that I even forgot how the normal cursor looked like!
I decided to upgraded my RAM to 8GB, but same problem! I had like thousands of mails and didnt even find any solution to downgrade back to leopard!
I wasted almost a week to re-install snow leopard and all my applications!! and luckily google apps saved me with all my mails! Since then I have been ignoring every single update! I am happy with snow leopard!!
LION IS VERYY BUGGY! I wasted my $30 odd bucks!!! I often search for freezing beach ball lion!!! and seems there is no solution till now... NEVER GOING TO UPGRADE!!! -
Macbook Pro 13, i5 2011 awkwardly beeps and freezes.
I've had my Macbook Pro 13 inch i5 Sandy Bridge since it came out in March. I always noticed a bit of lag while having a few aps up.
When I'd make songs on garageband it would randomly turn silver and bring up a box saying something like "Hold Down the Power button" and you couldn't leave the screen. It would also shut down if I listened to itunes and worked on imovie.
When I upgraded to OSX Lion it got worse. I've been plaing Starcraft II on a Medium setting, now because I upgraded it will only run on a Low setting, and lags in late game. Like, seriously lags. You can't move or do ANYTHING. It's not only SC giving me issues, when I play Sims 3 and have Skype, Itunes, and Mail up it will freeze and shut the computer off.
Photoshop now refuses to open, so I ended up uninstalling it.
I can't use imovie at all.
My battery life isn't very good.
If I'm on the internet, listening to itunes, and chatting on skype I'll get a random freeze and the computer will beep once. Then do it again a few moments after.
I have an appointment with Apple tomorrow, I'm worried that they wont fix or replace the computer. I don't want to get stuck with this.
I mean, I played Starcraft II on a medium setting on my macbook air 2010. You'd think this thing could at least run it on high! You could have a RAM issue:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US
It sounds like you may also be getting the kernel panic screen, which could well be tied to your RAM issue:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
Since your Mac is new and under warranty, Apple is obligated to fix these problems for you. Your Mac is not operating properly for whatever reason, and as long as there is no user inflicted accidental damage, there is no reason why it should not be fully repaired under warranty.
Good luck! -

information, across several topics in this site with topics divided into Guides:
•Tech Guides - TheSafeMac:
http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
Sometimes, items may have been inadvertently downloaded by accident or due
to poor advisement, and of those some can be a cause of slowness in Mac OS X.
Also, the use of scanning antivirus software can be a cause of slow and disruptive
system issues; since antivirus for the most part is not effective due to the nature of
the Mac OS X and the inability of an AV application to have records of unknown, &
unsubstantiated or rumored issues in the wild, since few or none are known to exist.
The note in the etrecheck report of excessive Page Outs, implies directly that the
computer may need to have more RAM installed; a matching pair of higher capacity
correct spec RAM chips, could be purchased from a reputable source & installed.
As much as, perhaps 16GB in a RAM upgrade, depending on the MacBook build.
All of those red-lettered items in the report that did not load, appear to be system
parts; perhaps that may be something to investigate. Not sure why that is...
{Because today is part of a weekend, I'd suspect the time of day and weekday are
both behind the lack of an earlier reply to your post here. Also, if there have been
weather or other disruptions in the lives of those volunteers who offer help, then
maybe they've had to modify their plans around such events. Or power outages.
We had one here for more than an hour, and everything went out. Even phones.}
So hopefully some other knowledgable readers may contribute ideas on how to
resolve the issues; troubleshooting may be helpful, and to read through sections
of TheSafeMac to see if there is any malware, adware, or other odd activity that
may point to a cause; removal suggestions for those are in that site. Also, if you
had visited any torrent or sharing sites, or downloaded free yet contaminated items
from software download sites, they could also affect your computer. There are
a few areas in that web site worth reading through.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing! -
This always happens to me but recently it's happens more and more. Sometimes When I use it to game or do work or skype it will eventually black out and forze. I always have to hold my power button down to force off my Macbook pro. What is the caused of the proble and will focing off my macbook constantly spoil my mac?
In very rare cases resetting SMC has solved this problem.

2012 Macbook Pro won't boot from CD and freezes in single user mode
I'm rebuilding a macbook pro. Everyting was fine until I tried to install Snow Leopard from the disk. It goes to the Apple symbol no spinning wheel and you can hear the drive working for a few seconds but then stops. I've also tried booting to sinlge user mode but it just freezes after Loading System\Library\Caches\com.apple.kext.cahces\Startup\Extensions.
I've tried resetting the PRAM as well.If you have a 2012 MacBook Pro, you can't install Snow Leopard because it's not compatible, so it's normal that you can't start OS X.
Now, you have to install OS X Lion or Mountain Lion again. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and reinstall OS X. After reinstalling OS X, you will be able to use your computer.
You can't run an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, because of some reasons:
1. The hardware isn't compatible.
2. The firmware restricts the installation of older versions on the computer.
3. It's illegal: Apple doesn't allow you to install an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, and it doesn't mind the method you use (a "normal" installation or a virtual machine) -
On macbook pro when logging in the loading bar gets to a certain point every time then crashes
I recently upgraded to yosemite, I tried to go on my macbook but after I log in the system shuts down automatically
OK, let's try this: as it sounds as if there's something wrong with your hard drive.
Try booting into Internet recovery by holding down the command, option and R keys whilst booting. Make certain that you have a good Internet connection before doing this. Eventually (and it will take a while) you'll see a globe on your screen and then, eventually again, the Recovery screen. Select Disk Utility, then at the top left highlight your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've changed it) and click on the "Verify" button. If everything's OK with your boot drive you'll get a green text telling you that. If it needs to be repaired, then you can try to repair it. If it does need to be repaired, I'm hoping that you already have a back-up in place as there's probably a 50/50 chance of Disk Utility being able to repair the drive.

My homepage now says
XML Parsing Error: no element found
Location: chrome://speeddial/content/speeddial.xul
Line Number 1, Column 1
every time I open firefox.
I then have to reinstall speeddial every time I start up. This never used to happen before and I don't think I've changed any settings.Been in touch with the author of the product and got the following reply:
The problem is the SiteAdvisor extension that McAfee installs; go to Tools > Add-ons, in the resulting panel select "Extensions", locate SiteAdvisor, click on it to select, and then click the "Disable" button; Speed Dial will work perfectly after that.
I already contacted them to attempt to fix the problem, but no reply so far. The problem happens before any Speed Dial code is executed, so I don't think I can fix it on my side.
Don't have the problem any more, note I had a McAfee update just before the problem started happening. -
Firefox lags and freezes for a few seconds every time I want to load a new page or open a new tab
This just started a couple weeks ago, I've tried disabling numerous add-ons and updating plugins but to no avail.
Disabling hardware acceleration seemed to solve the problem. Thank you all very much, but before I close this thread as solved, I've always had that feature enabled to the best of my knowledge. Why did it suddenly cause problems?

Brand new 15" MacBook Pro Retina - unplugged from Thunderbolt Display and Keyboards today find keyboard alpha-numerics not working; except the function keys, delete key, tab key, command/ctrl/shift/alt/fn and arrow keys; and 7/8/9/u/o/j/l produce cursor nudges.
It's a new machine - and the Thunderbolt Display is meant to work with it. You need to just make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have them fix whatever is wrong.
If you like, you could always try a SMC reset and a PRAM/NVRAM reset to see if either of those will get your keyboard back in working order...

Why won't my MacBook Pro start up? White screen and flashing question mark.
Hi,
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 2 years now and I installed OS X 10.8 about 4 months ago.
Today I turned the MacBook Pro on and a white screen with a flashing question mark appeared. I tried then getting the startup manager up: turning on the laptop and immediately holding in alt (option). But nothing appeared for about 25 seconds until a rotating Earth labelled 'Internet recovery' appeared that gave me options to join wireless connections. However, my internet wasn't in the options and when I tried typing in the information required to join my internet the laptop would just load and never find it.
I then tried putting in my Mac OS X install DVD (10.6.7) and help in C until the apple logo appeared on the screen and the little rotating loading circle appeared. That then disappeared and a cicle with a cross through it appeared (similar to a no entry sign). Then after about 30 seconds a blue screen followed by a grey screen appeared until eventually the disc ran properly. I then went into Disk Utility but there was no option called Macintosh HD, only the discs content. It wouldn't let me first aid, erase or repair anything.
I'm totally stumped and have 4 exams at university within the next 2 weeks. I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me out here?
Thanks,
Best wishes,
ConnorThe support article linked below is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to starting up from an installation disc, you should instead start up in Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
If you don't have a current backup of all the data on the startup volume, and you want to preserve that data, then you must try to back up before you do anything else. Ask for instructions if you need them.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to reinstall OS X from Recovery, if necessary. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

hi, i've just bought my first macbook pro, i just installed office mac and when i open the page i cannot see the minimise maximise and close buttons as it's hidden behind the apple menu bar, also when it's at full screen, those buttons do not appear
Try to edit the size of the page using the sides of the page, or if you are desperate, force quit using command-Q. In full screen put your cursor on the top of the page, and the menu bar will appear. If it doesn't keep "pushing" it up until it does. Hope this helps!

I have lightroom 5.7 and a macbook pro 10.9.5. Occasionally when I am editing a photo in the develop module, I suddenly get a "file not found" message and the editing ceases to work. There is no "exclamation" icon below the histogram box in the Library module or on the photo in grid view, and the histogram is gone. What is going on? Trying to find it using the "find missing photos" in the library menu does nothing.
