Macbook Pro (10.6.4) thinks there are 2 startup volumes...

I have been having some trouble with Snow Leopard after updating to 10.6.4 and have been trying to troubleshoot some issues and discovered the computer sees 2 "Macintosh HD" startup volumes.
I started the computer holding Option to get to the startup manager, and I was surprised to see 2 harddrives there with the same name, and both will boot, one gives a few errors, and I forget exactly what they were, but I still had access to all my files.
I had this issue shortly after I got the computer (originally running Leopard) and upgraded to Snow Leopard (with a legit copy). I spoke to Apple tech support, they were clueless, and just had me wipe everything out and reinstall Snow Leopard clean, I guess it worked for a while, but when I updated to 10.6.4 the problem came back...
I was wondering a few things:
1. Has anyone seen this issue before if so what causes it?
2. Is there any way to reconcile the issue without wiping everything again?
3. Any other solutions?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

It sounds like your boot drive has somehow become partitioned into 2 partitions, but I have no idea how since partitioning is generally something you have to do on purpose. Did you ever partition the drive, perhaps to create a Windows partition or something like that?
Open Disk Utility and look at the left column. Do you see your hard drive by brand name with two volumes under it?
Select the drive by brand name and go to the partition tab. Do you see two volumes? The blue part represents stuff on the drive.
It is possible to eliminate one of these, but first you need to be sure where your data is--possibly it is all on one partition, but you could have some on one partition and some on the other. You want to be sure to back up ALL of your data onto an external drive before eliminating a partition.
What you want to do is to get all of your data on the top partition. Once the bottom partition has nothing that you want to keep, you can highlight it and then hit the "-" sign. It should then disappear. Then you should be able to drag the bar down and increase the size of the top partition to take up the space formerly occupied by the second partition. Then you can hit "Apply", and you should end up with just one partition.
Again, be sure to have a good backup on an external drive before trying to repartition your drive. If something doesn't work, there is always the chance that you will have to erase the drive and start over.
Good luck!

  • Have a new macbook pro and on the display there are 2 lines, one blue and one green on the left side.  Does anyone know what the problem is.  Happened after 2 weeks.

I just purchased a new macbook pro.  Have had it about 2 weeks.  Last night there were 2 thin lines that are on the left side of the desktop, 1 green and 1 blue from top to bottom.  This happened after I added a printer.  Anyone know what this is.  Fearing that is a flaw in the screen.

Sounds like a hardware problem.  You'll need to contact Apple ASAP.  Since it's so new, hopefully they will just replace it rather than making you go through the repair process, but that's up to them.

All my electronics are about a year old.   iPad is Model MB293LL (4.2.1) only wi-fi - no phone.
MacBook Pro is  OSX 10.6.8 Build 10K549.  Also have an AT&T iPhone that I basically use as a Palm, since I changed carriers.
    Thank you for your help.
ps: I got an error message and it looks like this did not get posted the first time.  2nd try.

Open the Mac App Store on your MacBook Pro
Hold the Option key and click on “Purchases”
Hold the Option key and click on “OS X Lion” from the purchased app list
“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS.

  • My Macbook Pro (bought in 2013) function keys are not working

My Macbook Pro (bought in 2013) function keys are not working. The function keys ie the volume and brightness are not working at all both with one single tap and with the function button. I have checked the settings for the keyboard but nothing seems to stand out that is making the keys not work?
    Please can you help?
    Thanks

Some might suggest resetting the SMC, but I don't really think that will solve the problem. You can try, though.
I would suggest, since you're still under warranty, taking your machine to your local Apple Store/AASP and letting them fix the problem. It could be any sort of hardware problem. Only the Apple techs have the tools to properly diagnose and repair the machine.

You can't merge accounts or copy content to a different account, so anything that you bought or downloaded via the old account is tied to that account - so any updates that those apps get you will only be able to download via that account. You can change which account is logged in on the iPad via Settings > Store

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar

  • My laptop thinks there are headphones in at all times, such that the speakers won't work, how do I fix this?

My laptop thinks there are headphones in at all times, such that the speakers won't work, how do I fix this?

Thanks but that did not work. Details: when I don't have headphones plugged in, the volume won't go up or down and it also displays a circle with a line through it meaning it's not working. When I go to settings and look at my audio output, it only says headphones, even if no headphones are plugged in. I have tried inserting and removing headphones many times, also tried poking the inside of the headphone jack with a stripped Q-tip, and nothing works. Something inside the jack that senses headphones is not sensing the lack of headphones.

  • I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

Are they taking space in all of these locations?
It depends on how you are using iPhoto and Aperture.
iPhoto and Aperture each create their own library files, and the default location for them is in /users/youruseraccount/Pictures
You can configure iPhoto and Aperture to use the same Library file, in which case your photos are only stored once.  But if you are using iPhoto & Aperture with independent library files, you may in fact be duplicating your storage.
The second consideration is whether or not you have configured iPhoto and/or Aperture as reference libraries, in which case their library files only reference photos you have stored in other places on your hard drive.  Setting them up as reference libraries does not duplicate the photos inside the library files.

  • Mac won't let me move files into a folder bc it THINKS there are duplicate files - but they're not

Mac won't let me move files into a folder bc it THINKS there are duplicate files - but they're not. There are hundreds of what it thinks are duplicates. How can I get it to let me put them all into a folder and create unique names? If I do one file at a time, it gives me the option to keep both files. But not when I am moving hundreds at a time.

A reply to an old problem, but I couldn't find this solution anywhere. I had the same problem when I moved my iTunes library to an external drive. As Apple recommends, I used File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to copy my music files from my overstuffed hard drive to the external drive. Copying went fine for a while, adding about two-thirds of my files to the new drive without incident. Then I got the big stop sign with the error message: "Copying files failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
This turned out to have nothing to do with either the hard drive or the external disk. I had a bad file in my music library that was shutting down the consolidation process. Unfortunately the error message says nothing about which file may be the culprit. All I could think to do was to go back to my original library in iTunes and sort by Artist, select all cuts with artists beginning with A, right click and select "Consolidate Files". Then do the same with B artists, etc. Proceeding this way, files resumed copying but when I got to the "S" selections, the consolidate process failed again. Then I selected smaller and smaller batches until the problem file was identified. Removed it from my library and then Consolidate worked fine through the rest of the library. Problem solved.
I spent several days working through this; hope I can save someone else the time.

  • Macbook Pro 17" - My built in speakers are not working.

    Macbook Pro 17"
My built in speakers are not working.
The speaker logo is not highlighted (grey not Black) and when in sound options  "output" pane only displays the digital out for 'optical' - ie, the internal speakers dont register (headphone socket works)
    Any ideas?

    1. If red light is visible in the headphone port, plug the headphone into and out of the port 5 or 6 times
to flip the microswitch inside the port. Hopefully that will make the mode revert back to analog from digital.
    2. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    3. Reset SMC.   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
         Choose the appropriate method.
Hope any one of these steps helps.
