MacBook Pro 10.8 problems

Hardware Overview:
  Model Name:    MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:    MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:    2.2 GHz
  Number of Processors:    1
  Total Number of Cores:    2
  L2 Cache:    4 MB
  Memory:    2 GB
  Bus Speed:    800 MHz

  SMC Version (system):    1.16f11
  Serial Number (system):    W87******TYAL
  Sudden Motion Sensor:
  State:    Enabled
After installing 10.8 error message randomly appears
"There was a problem connecting to the server"
Took the laptop to the Genius Bar we also discover the ethernet and the 800FW were disabled.
Starting system with 10.7 ports worked.
The 400FW port seems to shut down during sleep mode. Waking up the system randomly results in error message.
Problems don't seem to be distructive. Mostly annoying.

HI,
Those two messages you are seeing are outgoing calls from your Computer.
There are several possibles about how it was set up.
1)
Making a connection to a Server and then making that permanent (each Start up)
Starting with the Library as the Front app
Go Menu > Go to Server.
A pop up appears where you can browse or enter an IP address.
As I mentions the IP address is normally with a format type as in SMB://192.168.0.36 in my case.
It could be AFP (Apple File Protocol) or SMB to do file sharing.
As I also said VNC:// (IP address) invokes the Finder's Screen Sharing
You get asked for User Name (your Access Name) on the "Server" and the Password.
If the Server or Drive on a computer needs your to list it then that tends to be next.
With the first two of these (SMB or AFP) a blue server icon appears on the desk top (most likely with the Name of the Drive, folder or place you accessed.
To make it permanent and start up each time your turn the computer on you go to System Preferences > Accounts (Users and Groups in Mountain Lion) and then Login Items on your account.
From there you use the + icon and navigate to the Desktop and chose the Drive.
It will then tend to remember the User Name and Password and connect each time.
2)
If your Time Machine Back up is on a External Drive on another computer you may have had to do part of 1) above to "See" the disk on the Desktop.
Having got that far you can then chose it as a Disk in the System Preferences > Time Machine  as the Backup drive.
This to will then automatically login (or at least try) each time the computer is turned On.
3)
Slightly more unlikely is having a drive or  computer showing on the desktop already (As in 1) )
Then using it for temporary files (Such as Photoshop's Scratch disk)
In Photoshop and Photoshop Elements you can, in the Preferences, set the space that the app uses to hold temporary files.  It is called the Scratch disk.  My G4 tower has server Drives and the non boot drives (free space) gets used as th Scratch Disk.
It would slow the Undo and Redo functions but it would be possible.
Certain App such as HTML editors can show the File:// as the URL in the relevant Field  in a browser when testing some web pages.
However there tends to be an extra slash as well.  (file:///Users/ralph/Desktop/button.html)

macbook pro touchpad curser problems.  typing randomly jumps to wherever the curser is resting at the time.  unbelievably maddening.  multiple devices same all have same problem.  hard to believe we cannot find anything on the apple site about this.  MANY complaints outside of this site on this issue... clearly a touchpad/battery design flaw being ignored by Cupertino.  during the writing of this post, the curser jumped randomly and started typing in a different location six times.  IMPOSSIBLE to use as a word processor since typing becomes quite frustrating.  HELP.  any ideas?  Fanboy and shareholder.  three macbook pros in the house...all the same problem. (please do not offer separate keyboard as solution...this is a laptop, not a Surface Pro...)

Go step by step and test.
    1. Restart
    2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.

  • 2012 MacBook Pro Intel i7 (purchased May 2013) constantly drops airport connection. My 2006 MacBook Pro has no problems connecting and staying connected.

I received a 2012 MacBook Pro INtel i7 for my birthday this May 2013. It constantly drops my airport connection. My ancient 2006 MacBook Pro has no problem connecting to airport, nor staying connected. I've had to write this message several times as I keep losing the airport connection and have to reconnect. BTW: I am less than five feet from the airport base.
    Thanks for help.

After trying all of the above the suggestions, the problem returned as before. However, after digging some more I discovered that the issue appears to lie with the 10.4.10 version of the Mac OS; when I checked the software log under the system profiler I noticed that I had installed that update at about the time my Airport problems began. Apple then quietly released a v 1.1 combo update to 10.4.10 on July 2nd, which once installed appears to have resolved the problem. You can find the download at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
What's curious is that originally Apple listed that the v 1.1 combo update resolved some issues with RAW image data, and some sound problems, which don't seem to have anything to do with Airport.

  • Does any one else with a mid 2012 13 inch macbook pro have this problem?

I took my computer in for repair last year having this problem and the problem has started again. I don't know why this happens because I am very carefull with my laptop and never use it on my lap. I also have a shell case on the computer and put this in a laptop sleeve. Also,  have friends that abuse their laptops and have the same model as me and they have never had this kind of issue. My software is up to date so I don't think thats a problem.
Model: Macbook Pro 13 inch Mid 2012
I purchased this in June 2012 and do not have apple care so if someone can tell me how much the repair for this problem will cost that would be great!

That looks like a GPU or display problem.  Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free regardless of warranty status.  You will be told what repair costs will be, which you may accept or decline.
Bring the image with you just in case the MBP starts to behave it self in front of the technician.
    Ciao.

  • Could these (MacBook Pro) keyboard/trackpad problems be Leopard related?

My (MacBook Pro's) keyboard and trackpad stop working every couple of minutes. And then suddenly comes back. The capslock key and it's LED is also not responding anymore when it happens.
Could this be a software thing? I'm about to send this MacBook Pro back and get a replacement, but that would be kind of pointless if this is a software problem caused by Leopard.
    Anyone in the same situation?
    S.

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11, and mine started out having the exact same problems:
First, the keyboard took 2-3 minutes to be recognized after waking from sleep. Then, a few days later, the keyboard and trackpad would quit unexpectedly during use, took a few minutes to start working again. Then it went off a cliff from there. For the past 5 days, my keyboard and trackpad are not working whatsoever, I've tried all of the suggestions I can find online, nothing works. From the moment I startup, to the moment I shut down (thankfully I have a wireless Mighty Mouse) neither of them are recognized. I've had it on for 8 hours straight and it still didn't recognize the keyboard or trackpad. They don't show up in the system profiler under the USB section, and on top of that the on screen keyboard only types in lowercase, nothing happens when I hit the shift or Caps Lock key on the on screen keyboard.
I called Apple 4 days ago, they said that this is a priority issue and hope to have a fix out within a couple of weeks...yes...a couple of weeks, they said that they had the fix, and were just waiting on patents to go through (you have to be kidding me right?). Their temporary "fix" is to buy an external keyboard and mouse.
This is not by any means a Leopard only issue, and you can trace posts about this online all the way back to October 1, 2007, well before Leopard was released to the public.
The crazy thing is, if you look at this and don't assume it was caused by Apple, this bug behaves exactly like a virus, and a very well written one at that.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro External Monitor Problems

    Hi all,
Looking through some of the threads, it appears that getting macbook pros to work with an external monitors is a big issue.
I've just bought a phillips 27" monitor and I'm having no luck whatsoever getting my MBP to see it.  I've tried both HDMI and DVI using Apple's own mini adapters, but no matter I do, the monitor fails to detect any kind of signal and goes into sleep mode.
I occassionally get the blue screen flicker on my MBP as though it's trying to connect, but the monitor does nothing!!
I've tried most of the suggestions in other threads, which relate to earlier OSX versions, but nothing has helped.
    I'm running 10.8.4 on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7.
If I fire up my Apple TV, I can use mirroring and the monitor displays my desktop no problem, but the picture quality is poor. So I guess the monitor works. I want to use a bigger screen as I use Logic Pro, so clarity is pretty essential when it comes to picture quality.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Best Regards
    Phil

    Hello Phil,
The following article provides a number of troubleshooting steps that I'd recommend looking into, especially testing with another display if possible, and resetting the MacBook Pro's parameter RAM and SMC.

  • Retina Display MacBook Pro image persistence problem.

    Hello,
I have recently ( about 3 months ago) bought a Retina MacBook Pro and installed Windows via Bootcamp on it. I unfortunately am used to Windows. Well recently I tried to migrate to OS X and use it more often. Whilst doing so something caught my eyes on the desktop/Screen. There appears to be Ghosting images of the Finder/Safari windows I open which look extremely annoying and terrible for a machine I payed 3000 dollars for. I have contacted Apple support via a phone call and they said they will replace it...the screen...if i brought it and gave it to them myself. The problem is, I live out of the US and I ordered this from a friend that has went there to buy one for me as we both live in Saudi Arabia and the Premium Resellers here sell it for a very high profit rate. My issue is that I live out of the US with a Malfunctioning Laptop worth $ 3,000, and can't send it to Apple as I don't know anybody going there including myself. I have researched and this problem happens only on LG manufactured screens, I have found out mine is also indeed an LG screen via a terminal code I found on the Internet. Is there any way Apple can replace the laptop or the screen from Saudi Arabia as there are premium resellers. The support guy was not very helpful as I was a rare case out of the US and the service of the resellers here said they would like to look at the display, I don't think they would fix it for free...Don't apple devices have an international warranty?
    Thanks,

an hour on my MBP by itself (someone else's office, a hotel room, an airplane, my lazy sofa) and my eyes lose the ability to focus --and I'm toast.
    Ok, I'll explain why.
First off your iPad and iPhone screen is smaller, thus doesn't reflect as much as a larger display will.
Your other displays are in a static environment where you have reduced the glare or it's been reduced just by chance.
When you take the glossy screen laptop to another location without adequate environmental features to reduce glare imposed (no overhead lights, closed windows, low light etc.) on the screen, thus your getting eyestrain from the glare.
It's caused by the slightly out of focus reflections verses the screen image, your eyes are automatically refocusing between the two images.
Your solution in this matter is to apply a anti-glare film to the laptops glossy screen, unfortunately it's going to cost money and be replaced often as it gets dirty, dries out and peels at edges etc.
Ideally a anti-glare matte screen would be the choice in the first place. I use my Mac for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and don't have the eyestrain problem anymore.

  • Macbook Pro Hard Drive Problem - Please Help

My macbook pro had a hard drive failure so I went out and bought a new hard drive and got it to work with the Mac OS, although 2 days later it crashed and now it is not being found when I use the disk utility (Cmd-R), I even ran a hardware test and showed no trouble found.
Should I return this hard drive and get another?
Or is there another problem that is occuring?
    I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2012)
    Thank You.

I just installed a new ribbon cable for the hard drive...Now I get a new error that is popping a message saying "2003-f", this happens when I try to go to the online recovery (CMD-R). I tried two different hard drives and still won't let me get to the utility.
Someone please help, my mini semester classes have started for my University, and I am stuck with no laptop.
    Thank You.

  • Macbook Pro Beach Ball Problems

I have a '08 MBP that has the spinning beach ball showing up in all the apps during use and everything runs slower.
Web pages take 5-10 seconds to load.
Lightroom photos take 5-10 seconds to load. Commands and mouse selections take 4-5 seconds to respond.
It slows down even more with an external monitor being used.
The fan runs high 85% of the time.
Hard drive was replaced with an SSD about 2 years ago, which helped calm HD noise.
The HD has 15.5 GB left right now, but the beach ball problem has been there even with half the HD full.
Problem has been going on for a couple of years, but I've managed around it.
This issue occurs even with only 1 app running. For instance, I'll shut all apps except one application, and it still drags, whether that one app be Safari or LR.
I realize the MBP is older, but it used to be very responsive with the same apps. Never used to see the beach ball during app usage, only at startup of app if anytime.
I believe the RAM is maxed out for what this machine can handle at 4GB, but again, the system didn't slow down before.
I believe the problem may be some processes running in the background that are dragging down everything, but not sure what to look for.
Any advice any fixes are greatly appreciated.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Anti Reflective coating on macbook pro retina display problems

The AR coating is coming off of my macbook pro retina display.  laptop purchased in fall of 2013.  anyone else seeing this issue?

You are not the first one. Every laptop with retina display that I know in Latvia has this problem.
Hope that Apple reads such claims and will do something on upcoming models.

  • Macbook Pro to HDtv problems

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro from 2009 (1st aluminum body). I recently got a samsung HDTV, and when I hook it up to my macbook, sometimes certain programs come up in a distored, unviewable form. It is hard to describe, it looks sort of like a photo negative, with random rainbow colours throughout.
if I close the program (eg firefox) and reopen it on the hdtv with a wireless mouse, then it always works. But if I have the program open first, and then plug it in and try and full screen netflix, it gets all messed up.
I did cheap out on my hdmi adapter, and my hdmi cable. I'm not sure if either of these would have anything to do with it. Help!

    Hi
I've done the same thing, with no problems - the tv audio input selector setting needed adjusting, but otherwise fine. Some tv's are less than obvious how to have the audio input independent of the hdmi.

This sounds like a Windows configuration issue.  Have you tried using the device manager to "remove device" on the HD while it's attached?  THis should remove the drivers, etc, then allow you to re-connect it and let the OS re-detect and load drivers.  I would think that this would allow the OS to select the right driver for the external HD this time instead of the HID driver...

  • MacBook Pro 11/2007 problem with SSD OCZ Vertex Series 250 GB

    Hi,
you can read my detailed problem in the OCZ board here:
    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64941
    The short version:
    - I bought an OCZ Vertex SSD with 250 GB for my 2 years old MacBook Pro
    - System Details: MacBookPro3,1; Boot Rom: MBP31.0070.B07; CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz; SMC: 1.18f5
    - The first 250 GB OCZ SSD was an firmware 1.3 and I could install it with Snow Leopard very easy. After 2 days the HDD just disappeared and it also didn't work in an other PC with an internal SATA port and also not with an external disk with sata to FireWire / USB
    - I RMA'ed the disk with OCZ and received a new one with firmware 1.4. I tried to install the computer from scratch and it couldn't write the partition when the SSD was connected to the internal SATA port of the MBP. I used the external SATA to USB and formated the disk with another mac. Then I could install SL from scratch but after some hours the computer began to stall and after the reboot it tried to run fschk and I got the error: "kernel[0]: disk0: I/O error."
(again: Further details please have a look at the link above)
    - When I boot the system through firewire with the SSD connected through SATA to Firewire it works like a charm but that doesn't make sense (Having a MBP with an external boot drive)
    - I RMA'ed the disk again and last week I received the third one but it had the exact same problem.
So now OCZ told me to ask apple for a possible solution. Does anybody have an idea what to do?
I've read two posts about OCZ problems and they wrote about efi 1.7 problem and with efi 1.6 it would work. Didn't try it out yet - should I?
    Thanks for you help!

  • Mac Pro to MacBook Pro -  File transfer problem

I just bought a new Mac Pro. It is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet. The Airport Extreme is connected to my cable modem vis ethernet.
The Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro appear in the others Shared part of the side bar. I have checked the permissions of the files (command I) that I am trying to transfer and in every case there are the usual names- admin, my name, and everyone - with Read & Write privileges. However, there is another one called (unknown) with read only. I can not change the privilege nor delete the name from the list.
    1. I have repaired permissions on both machines
    2. In "Get Info" I changed permissions and added "Administrators" and made it "Read & Write" to the files I am trying to share.
    *The Problem is:*
I can transfer from the MacBook Pro to the Mac Pro but when I try to transfer from the Mac Pro to the MacBook Pro , I get the Alert:
"You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named " Blah Blah"
When I click on "Continue", I get this message:
"The item "Blah Blah" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"
When I click continue I get:
" The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items".
From the Mac Pro I have no problem moving files from one folder to another on the MacBook Pro.
Transferring worked perfectly when I had my old PPC G5 (where the Mac Pro is in the loop).
Can someone please help? Anyone have an idea or two?

Have run into this problem repeatedly in the past two weeks.  I first discovered I could tether my MacBook Pro to my Droid X and access the internet for free, so I was elated.  After a couple of days I could no longer connect the phone to the Mac via Bluetooth as you describe.  Then it magically came back a week later, and after two days I lost it again.  I spent about 3 hours troubleshooting and solved it.  I hope this works for you.
Open Network Preferences on the computer
    HIghlight Bluetooth PAN
    Select the ADVANCED tab
    Click on "Renew DHCP Lease"
    That did it for me.
    Good luck,
    Rob
