Macbook Pro (10.9.3) w/ FCS 2 Installation?

Hello everyone, so I have a problem. I recently got a Macbook Pro (10.9.3), and my Video Prodcution teacher was kind enough to give me her Final Cut Studios 2 for free. When I tried to install the program, a message appeared saying "You can't open the application 'FinalCutStudio.mpkg' because PowerPC applications are no longer supported." I'm hoping there's some way to fix this without purchasing a new Mac, purchasing FCP X, or erasing any data.

Here is a recent post I assembled that announced a 3rd installation method, that does not require the use of Terminal or Pacifist:

I have now successfully done this on four computers, brand new iMacs running 10.9.4. And I've discovered an even easier way to do this! You don't need to edit the plist file, just move it into the Trash. Install proceeds normally. You can return it after you're done if you like, I don't know what (if any) possible repercussions might come from leaving it deleted.
The file, as indicated on Jeremy Johnstone's blog, is
/System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app/Contents/Resources/PPCRequirements.pl ist
(Note that when you get to Installer.app, you will have to Control+click and select "Show Package Contents")
I have not, as yet, attempted to recreate his successes.

I tried several times to install Photoshop Elements 11 on my new Macbook Pro (10.8.3) but the installer failed to initialize and the Support Advisor inspection could not identify any issue. I went today to the Apple Store to get help and the Genius guy couldn't resolve the problem either. He told me to contact Adobe Support and he gave me an Adobe token number.

MacBook Pro Stalls/Running slow since Mavericks Installation

On the advice of the more experienced here is a new thread.
Since installing Mavericks my MBP has gone from pretty much an instant response to requests, to stalling, the spinning pinwheel, longer startup and shutdown times, as well as slower access to websites (Chrome and Safari, though Safari appears slower).
I have been advised to run EtreCheck when I first joined a post regarding the same problem. I posted the results and was advised to work through some of the issues. This is the initial test result and the very much appreciated advice.

Red is the items I'd look at these are mostly 'system level' - they can alter a lot in the OS. Check the developers website, update or remove the apps if the developer doesn't say it supports 10.9 or if you can live without them.
Soundflower is out of date & it is a 'kernel extension', the kernel is the core of the OS - you don't want any old code running here.
The installer has a removal tool too https://code.google.com/p/soundflower/ so update or remove it if you don't use it.
Update or remove Paragon's NTFS tool, it is running at a system level & it's background jobs seem to be in a 'problem state', it also has something running in the kernel.
Adobe has an updater running, try to ensure Adobe's apps are all up to date, just incase they have stopped checking. Repeat with Google's apps, just launch the apps & look in the 'App menu' or the Help menu for updates. These companies tend to reinstall the updaters if you try to delete them, so there it little you can do but keep the apps updated.
It's odd that all your User Launch Agents: are not loaded, these are background jobs that start on login (if they are in a loaded state). The same principle applies, update or remove the related apps if they are not needed.
CleanMyMac is a concern - there are lots of posts here claiming it can break the OS - it can help you to remove files that are installed by Apple which is not the best idea. I am unconvinced that running 'maintenance utilities' all the time is a good idea, however the app removal tool may be OK for cases where a developer doesn't have an uninstaller. 'Cleaner apps' use RAM & can spend time scanning files which can slow other tasks. Search here for varied opinions on CleanMyMac. I also use ClamXAV, ensure that is upto date & so check it's engine & rules are current.
The purple items are 'user level' items (run on login of your account).
There is a simple way to see if your issues are because of 'user level' items, create a new test user account & login as that user. If the Mac is stable you can assume it is something within your 'user items'.
Check that you need the Login Items running every time you login. They are listed in System Preferences> Users & groups > select your account… login items tab.
You appear to have 3 LogMeIn internet plugins installed - is Safari behaving OK or running slow? I would consider removing most plugins & then installing them as you need them. You can look inside /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ to remove them manually.
~/Library is your 'home library' Use the Finders Go Menu > Open Folder… and enter ~/Library to reveal it. Apple hid this Library folder.
I'd be tempted to remove the Java applet plugin - old Java is a real secuity risk & Safari has probably disabled this for you already.
There seems to be 2 Facebook plugins installed (probably inside your ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/). Remove the oldest one & look for the newest release. Update the Safari Extension if it needs it too.
The Preference Panes are installed in /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/. Open System prefs & launch each third party pref pane (the bottom rows) & check for updates if possible. These also have an ability to modify the OS, so any errors could effect everything. You can usually right click (or ctrl+click) to remove them from the preferences (it removes them from the OS, but may leave any libraries or extra tools behind - see if the developer has removal instructions).
I see you have Plex installed, does this run very often? I find it can drag a Mac to a slow crawl when it is indexing. I suspect Connect360 may do similar things, but I don't really know for sure what it does .
MenuTab for Facebook seems to be doing something with RAM & CPU, update or remove if you don't need it.
That may all be daunting, but it should help. Start with the system level items, and then look at updating the other items. You may find things improve after a cleanup & a reboot.
This was extremely helpful and I have gone as far as my knowledge will allow for now. I did make a bootable clone of the main HDD prior to doing anything, and now there seems to be little improvment following the suggestions made. Also along the way MacFuse was deleted and well as Flip4Mac and NTFS.
Things are far from perfect though and the MBP still stalls and is performing very poorly.

Macbook pro 13' 2.4 windows 7 installation

Ok, so i bought this new macbook pro 13' 2.4 2 days ago and today i tried to install windows 7 via bootcamp in this laptop. first i launched boot camp assistant, then partitioned Macintosh HD. After that i click on 'Start the installation' and it restarted and booted into windows 7 dvd. Then the problem came in. Instead of showing 'Windows is loading files' the screen turned blank and did not respond. I tried a few times and the problem remained.
Im a new to mac, please give me advises to fix this problem.

Macbook Pro replacement hard drive and re-installation of OS X

My son's Macbook Pro (mid 2009) started crashing on boot up and gave a input output error. I have replaced the original 250gb hard drive with a 750gb drive and also upgraded the ram from 2 to 8. Finally I have also replaced the battery. I am using Leopard installation dvd to re-install the software but can only progress as far as the screen 'Install Mac OS X' but there is no disc offered to install it on. By using Disk Utility the only disc shown is the dvd. Pressing the 'New Image' tab I entered 'Save As' 750gb WD HD and 'custom size' as 750 gb. Utility Disk informs me that the disc is only .75mb? Any suggestions to solving my problem and completing the installation program?

Niel, I've checked the connection to the hard drive and all is good but as a check I have disconnected and re-connection the cable to the hard drive and the board. I have also 'listened' to the hard drive and it appears to be spinning. Unfortunately, the Snow Leopard installation disc gets no further with its installation. Are Macbook Pro's of this age prone to cable breaks, or am I using the wrong disc for a full OS X installation, if Snow Leopard is an just as update? Is there anyway to add the drive using Disk Utility and if so how do I do it?

MacBook Pro runs slow after Mountain Lion installation

I have a mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro with 2.2g Ghz processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB encrypted disc.
After installing Mountain Lion and the recent upgrade OS X 10.8.1 (12B19), the system runs noticibly slower than with Lion, which ran slower than the previous version. This shows up in opening and closing programs, rate that drop down windows appear when something is clicked on the task bar, rate that windows open and close, rate that the dock comes up and the icons expand when the curser is moved over them, etc.
Due to my type of work, I need to encrypt the disc. I know this is costing me some speed. I unencrypted the disc and it ran noticably faster, and when I re-encrypted it seemed to run faster than before unencrptying and re-encripting. I have repaired permissions and verified the disk OK.
Somewhere in the build up to Mountain Lion release I thought I read where 4 GB of ram was recomended for Mountain Lion, allthough now the specs indicate 2 GB is OK. In activity monitor, the pie chart for system memory seems to always remain less than about 40% of active memory (yellow).
What recomendations does the community have to increase the speed of operations back to when this system was new?

I was having the exact same problem. My MacBook Pro was seriously close to unusable how slow it was. On a different thread, someone recommended I reset the VRAM and PVRAM (not sure about those initials). Shut down computer. Rebooted while holding down Command-Option-P-R all at the same time until I heard the second startup tone and then released. I noticed an improvement in performance immediately.

MacBook Pro won't start after ML installation

I installed OX S Mountain Lion and I then put the pro to sleep. Went about the night and about two hours later I came back to check out new features and so forth and after clicking with the mouse, the pro won't do anything. Basically the MacBook Pro is shut down and I can't start it back up. Any ideas? I have never had a problem with this pro until I installed ML.

Based on this, I'm not convinced it really is hardware that's to blame, as in all cases it's been shortly or immediately after Mountain Lion was installed.
I had some success last night. I left the machine unplugged completely all day, then last night plugged in and did the SMC reset procedure. Whether I was doing it incorrectly before, or leaving it unplugged all day made the difference, I'm not certain. However, it successfully booted!
I immediately disabled the sleep function, and closed most applications and left it running overnight. Unlike last time when the Genius managed to get it to boot (after it was left unplugged all night, I might add), it's still running fine today. If it's still running by the time I get home I will try re-enabling the sleep to see whether it makes the difference.
The logs from when it froze up previously show nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can tell. The last item in the console related to a memory usage report of the TuneUp app, and daily.out finished five minutes before it froze at 3.25 in the morning.
I'm hoping I can narrow it down to something in the system and then just work around it until there's an update. It's obviously not widespread, but it has affected some people. I'll post back if I find something significant.

I have the same problem and was advised by someone to reset System Management Controller (SMC). I haven't tried it yet though. I wish it could fix it. Let's give it a shot!

USB ports not working in Windows-7 on MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 after Bootcamp installation

1) INSTALLATION
Using Bootcamp (v. 5.1.1, OS X Mavericks) in combination with an original Microsoft installation DVD disc using an external optical CD/DVD drive. Note, the installation is NOT from an ISO image. In the Bootcamp setup window only the lower two of the three setup options are clicked, namely a) to download Windows-7 drivers to a USB stick, and b) to partition the harddrive and then to install Windows.
2) PROBLEM
After the initial Windows-7 installation no devices attached to the USB ports can be found under Windows-7. The ports are dead. Also the WLAN did not work, so no internet connection was possible.
3) CAUSE
The problem is caused when you use a USB 3.0 stick as destination for the Bootcamp driver downloads. It seems that Windows-7 cannot recognize the USB 3.0 stick properly during the Bootcamp/Windows installation process, thus failing to do perform a proper installation of the Windows-7 drivers.
4) SOLUTION
Use a USB 2.0 stick and everything will work perfectly.
Follow these steps in order:
1) Connect your external DVD drive to a USB port and insert the Windows installation disc
2) Start the Bootcamp utility
3) In Bootcamp, remove the failed Windows-7 installation and partition
4) In Bootcamp, redo the entire Bootcamp process, but this time using a USB 2.0 stick
5) Follow all further steps in Bootcamp and later in the Windows-7 installation process
6) At the end of the installation procedures you will be asked to confirm the installation of all Bootcamp/Windows drivers.
7) Bootcamp installs all the drivers and your Windows-7 installation will work perfectly.

Ok, where is this Intel driver? There is no such thing "program manager" so I am guessing you mean the Programs and features control panel, but on my machine that whole window is blank after a clean install. I still cannot get the USB ports to activate. Two fresh installs and several different USB sticks later and no luck. Should I just give up and go to Windows 8.1? I really need Windows 7 to work if at all possible. Other devices shows one USB controller without driver software so I suppose that's the culprit. There are other USB devices installed under the USB section of Device Manager, but they apparently have nothing to do with the USB ports themselves, just devices like the trackpad etc. I've spent two hours on this so far and it's getting out of control. Why doesn't this work with generic USB drivers?

Macbook Pro won't start up passed installer after failed lion update.

After installing what seems now to be a phony Lion update, my mac won't fully start up. Whenever i turn it on it will bring me to the installer and I can't seem to figure out how to start up on snow leopard again. I believe all my files are still intact. Whenever i turn it on it brings me to language options then utilities where i can choose to start from back up, disc utilites, reinstall lion, or use safari. Can anyone help me with this?

Since you appear to be running Lion do the following:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

10.8.4 MacBook Pro Retina 15" won't complete installation

Hello I've tried repeatedly to install 10.8.4 from 10.8.3 normally these updates have been error free and straight forward, however this time the restart begins and it will say wait for about 5-6 mins and then an error message consistently says "an unexpected error has occured, please restart your computer" not once has it been different or ever completed. I've tried repairing the disk to no avail.
Does anyone have anyone suggestions?
its been plugged in everytime with 100% battery as well.

Give this a try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair

After this is completed download and install 10.8.4 Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo).

Can't view videos using FCS client on Macbook Pro

I'm on a new Macbook Pro and I'm accessing FCS via the client. All seems fine but when I attempt to view an asset by clicking on the "video clip" icon nothing happens. Same issue when I open the asset and use the "Actions" drop down and select view.

Problem solved. Sort of. I asked our server admin to set me up in a new user group, new UN and PW. It was a shot in the dark, but it worked. Previously I had been set up as an Admin. Maybe there is a limit to the number of users that can be assigned to the Admin role? Or more precisely, maybe there is a limit to the number of machines that can be assigned to the admin role? Because I am able to access the Admin acct. successfully on my iMac at the office. Anyway, very strange. If you have any thoughts please let me know. Otherwise, thanks for the original response.

MacBook Pro without an installation disk.

So, the new mountain lion MacBook Pro did not come with an installation disk, if you need to make a complete backup
and reinstall every application, etc from scratch, what do you do?

There are two choices. The official one is to concoct a bootable recovery partition on a USB stick. Essentially, you transfer what the drive already has for recovery purposes onto separate media in case the hard drive bites the dust completely: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848
But we devious Mac hackers went one better. Why settle for a piddly recovery disk that does not have a full system installer when you can have it all? So we go thru the motions of "installing" ML afresh, for which you wheedle the full installer from Apple. No wireless access with Windows XP Pro (SP2) on Macbook Pro

Hello,
Just installed Windows XP Pro (SP2) on my new Macbook Pro using Bootcamp Beta. The installation has gone fine with the exception of wireless access to the internet through my Airport home network.
I've tried all the other configuraton wizards on XP...no joy.
The three other macs in the house (2 wireless, 1 ethernet) and one Windows laptop (wireless) are all fine and dandy.
Any suggestions on what to do?

Right Click on My Computer
Select Manage
Click on Device Manager
Make sure that your Ethernet Adapters are working properly
If there is an red X or a yellow ! next to any ethernet adapter then try to reinstall the drivers.
(you can reinstall the drivers via the installation cd or double click on the hardware device under device manager. there should be a reinstall drivers button in there. point it to the CD that you burned from bootcamp)
(there will be a couple of devices that are not working properly.)
