Macbook Pro 11' - SSD installation problems

I have bought a new crucial 256mb SSD after my Samsung 8400 256mb SSD failed twice.
I am now trying to install the SSD but my computer will not connect to the wifi in my building. I have tried a number of different networks and tested them with other devices which seems to be fine.
I am holding 'option' down when I turn the computer on which gives me network options to go through.
Any help really appreciated and if you'd like more information on the fault to help please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

floydy50,
if your 2011 MacBook Pro originally came with Lion installed (and no grey installation DVDs in the box), then according to this Apple page, you’ll need to have a wi-fi connection with either WPA or WPA2 security to be able to download Lion from Apple’s servers onto your new SSD. Have you confirmed that your building’s wi-fi has either WPA or WPA2 security?
If your 2011 MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard installed (and two grey installation DVDs in the box), then you’ll need to install Snow Leopard from its Mac OS X Install DVD, and run Software Update to get it to Mac OS X 10.6.8. If you had a newer version of OS X running on your previous SSD, you’ll then need to redownload that version of OS X from the Mac App Store and reïnstall it.
Have you tried booting from your old SSD externally? If it runs fine externally, but fails when run internally, then you might have a faulty internal SATA cable.

  • Macbook Pro with SSD 10.8 OS install CC desktop failed

System disk (256GB SSD) has 210GB before installation process started, 16GB system DIMM available, OS is v10.8. The process of updating Creative Cloud Desktop could not be finished, system prompted warning message of "insufficient memory for app installation" even SDD still has 140GB left.

    Dear Kapil,
I still failed to install CC desktop successfully. Same failure encountered. It looks like the installation process could not be finished for some reason, the storage space in SSD was keeping consuming for more than 60GB. I would not believe CC desktop needs more than 60G storage for installation. I had already installed it on my Mac Pro without any problem. I tried to install it on my MBP as backup. My issue may also relate to my changing level of my subscription last week. I upgraded my subscription level from single app to full function last week by the help from Adobe Service staff. However, I still saw the older subscription was listed on my subscription list, even the service staff said he or she has already cancelled my single app subscription successfully. I started to get warning message of trial expiration soon today while I was using Photoshop CC. This did tell me my single app subscription has been cancelled. Why I still saw it in my subscription list? It is really confusing.

    Kapil,
I had ever tried the process you suggested days ago by referring to closer issue reported in forum. However, I still encountered same failure after doing so. I will re-valid your suggestion after returning home tonight. I am afraid it related to SSD. Many thanks.

  • Will a Macbook pro early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15

My collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15 inch keeps getting stuck on the apple load up screen everytime he hits the power button. He doesnt know what version it is and I forgot to write down the model number of it(Ill update May 16 at 10am PST). I tried safe mode, it worked but after the loading bar gets close to 1/2 it freezes up. He can not find his installation disc that came with the computer. I have mine but its for Model # A1278 I think its snow leopard. Will the installation disc and application disc run successfully on my collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro?
I apologize if there's a similar thread out there, I couldnt find one. -

Will a MacBook Pro Early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 MacBook Pro 15?
    No it will not.
Machine specific gray/back disks are for one model of Mac only as they only contain hardware drivers for that model, not previous ones.
The 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disk will work and it's available from Apple online for a small charge.

This is indicative of a problem with the boot drive and the file structure retaining data on the drive.
The progress bar progressing and stopping means the fsck drive repair is failing, likley the drive incurred head shock damage at that point.
The boot drive itself is likely fine and the problem can be resolved but the disks are going to be required if it's running Snow Leopard.
First get the disks, then attempt Disk Utility > Repair Disk and check the SMART status if the drive is still good.
If there is no backup of data, get that off the machine using a external boot drive.
To fix that problem of a bad sectors, unfortutly the entire drive will need to be Zero Erased (security option > zero all data) using Disk Uility while c or option/alt key booted from the 10.6 disks (using a wired or built in keyboard), it's the only way.
This means all programs, files (remaining) and OS X will be removed in the process. You could replace the drive also.

I'v external DVD driver and I'd like to replace DVD driver with in MacBook Pro with SSD 512GB Crucial m4 2.5-inch SATA 6Gb.  Is it available? All your opinions are welcome.

Here is a post from another thread on this problem.
So here's the deal, don't expect SATA III devices to work on the optical port.  I just went thru this on both my 2009 and 2012 13" MBP's.   The 2009 is SATA II (3Gps) and the 2012 is SATA III (6Gps).   A SATA III SSD (OWC 6G) will only connect at 1.5 Gps on the 2009.  On the 2012, it actually connects at 6 Gps, but every drive I tried crashed (dropped drives, file errors, kernel panics), including a Samsung 830 and  Seagate Momentus XT 750.  Out of desperation, I stuck the (slow 500 Gb) Apple HD in, it connects at 3 Gps and works like a champ.   Check your System Info on SATA info.   If you have a 2009, don't waste your $$$ on high end SSDs or drives.  If you have newer, BEWARE, you're likely to have issues with high end SATA III devices.    On the bright side both Samsung and OCZ V4 work great on the main drive (450 MB/s read) and boots in 10 seconds!!      The optical drive SATA port is a major issue for everyone ( like me ) who buys MBPs because they can trip them out, this is a real nagging issue/obstacle.   This is a firmware issue that needs to be addressed by Apple. I'm hoping for a firmware update and that Apple isn't doing this intentionally.

This is a scam. Do not phone these people, at best they will charge you for unnecessary 'cleaning' and at worst they will gain access to your Mac and steal your data. You've probably managed to install some 'adware' which is producing this fake warning. 'Adwaremedic' should remove it and is safe to use - please see

  • HT4906 my iPhoto i can't open it on my macbook pro what is the problem?

my iphoto i can't open it on my macbook pro what is the problem?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • New Macbook Pro:  To SSD or not to SSD?

    Hello All,
It has been a while since I have been in the market for a new computer. I've managed to hang on to my 12-in. PowerBook G4 since 2003! Alas, it's time for an upgrade, now that the new 2010 line of MBPs have been released.
So far, I'm leaning towards getting the 15" i7 2.66 Ghz, with an 8 GB RAM. My dilemma is whether to stick with the 500 GB HDD that it comes with or "upgrade" to Apple's stock Solid State Drive. I'm not a techie, but I've been reading a little bit about the pros and cons of SSDs. It's a pricey option (especially for the top-tier 512GB), so I thought it merited further consideration.
I'm particularly interested in your thoughts about the longevity of these drives (decay, degradation?), SLC vs MLC drives, and whether or not Apple's stock SSD drives are a good value overall. (Anybody know which brand(s) Apple uses?)
The salesperson with whom I spoke at the Apple store didn't seem to know much about the machine's internals. I've had much better success searching answers in these discussion boards, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Your experienced and thoughtful insight is always appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    Cheers!

I have the 13" 2.53 Macbook Pro with SSD configured from the Apple Store (I think I paid $600 extra). It is only up to you to decide whether an SSD is worth the price for you. Frankly, given my usage I don't know how an SSD makes things better other than:
    1) Making me feel secure moving the machine when using it or using it during turbulence in airplanes ...
    2) Instant open of applications
Would I envision today buying a computer without an SSD? NO. To me, the level of comfort from the two advantages I listed above is worth the expense. I am not sure I would pay some $1350 extra for the 512 GB though. But I might.
The SSD supplied by Apple was a Samsung. Could other brands be less expensive? Perhaps. But I don't see how any other SSD could be faster +for my needs+. It is not that I keep writing huge amounts of data to my disk all the time. You can think of it that way: An SSD is at the very least an option that improves the overall experience and comfort (including a sense of security) and in this respect, given certain usage patterns (mine), the ones Apple uses are good enough.

  • Macbook Pro with SSD (optibay) and HDD. Want to clean install with discs and move hard drives.

    Hi all,
I have bought a used Macbook Pro 15' i5 Mid 2010 in brilliant condition. It came with original HDD in main Hard drive space and and SSD in an optibay. This all works fine and came with Mavericks already installed.
I want to start using the laptop like from new as there is nothing on there i currently need atm and dont want problems in the future with my apple id not being the original installer of mavericks. (had a similar problem previously on a used macbook white that had lion on)
What i want to do is erase and move the SSD to the main hard drive bay (have read this is preferred) and a clean install using install discs that came with it onto the SSD. Then install the HDD into the optibay or external enclosure and reinstall optical drive, not sure on that one yet.
My main questions are about the process i should use. There is nothing i need to back up or anything as this is effectively a new machine to me. Shall i simply erase the SSD (currently contains the OS) and install it in main hard drive bay and run install discs to install original OS (10.6.3)? Is it that simple?  Any tips on erasing SSD would be useful also?
Also as the machine currently boots from the SSD that is in the optibay, is there anything that tells the machine to boot from that hard drive as apposed to the main HDD bay or does it just know? If there is, when i install the SSD into main hard drive bay how do i tell the machine i have done so and to boot from there?
The other thing i may do is buy a new SSD and do a new install on that and leave the current SSD in the optibay and use that for storage. Undecided on that yet.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
    Sam

To do what you want, and the only way to do what you want legally and physically, you will need a set of Original System Reinstall DVD Discs. Without them you can't do what you want as the install of Mavericks that is now on it is TIED to the previous owners Apple ID and can not be transferred and or Reinstalled without knowing that persons Apple ID. And even iof you knew it it would still be TIED to that Apple ID and not yours.
So did the previous owner supply the Original System Reinstall DVD disc Set? If not you will need to order them from Apple.

  • Macbook pro 15 inch wifi problem (late 2011)

    Hello,
Here I write a little desperate with this problem that I have on the MacBook Pro (late 2011) with WIFI .
For several months ago, when I power on the MBP is all apparently normal , spend a few minutes and I lose the WIFI , the icon still comes out as "connected " but no WIRELESS signal , I turned off the WIFI, but, when I try to change back to turn ON, the icon of WIFI still OFF ( the inverted triangle ) . Restarting the MBP and still the problem no signal and appears as disabled , delete PRAM several times until finally everything works again , spend some time and again the same thing sometimes is fine for several hours, go out to eat and return and again the same thing, the worst was when I saw the message "Hardware not found" and "X " where the icon goes WIFI . I rebooted several times and not managed , this was the "hardware not found" message. Some time ago I went something like , when Lion had and read that resetting the PRAM and managed , never came out , but now even that it manages , and it is becoming more common , I thought it was the OS ( MacOSX Mavericks ) so I reinstalled (I'm not used Time Machine, I install all again ), this work the lasted several days without fail, until she passed again, I'm out of WiFi, when I see no WIFI signal in the list , restart me WIFI goes off and I can not change , restart it goes back to " hardware not found" and so on.
Now desperate for this, I opened the MBP , disconnected the cables from the Airport card and reconnected with care and making sure you are all well , turned on the MBP again and works!!, I lasted two weeks , then I thought it was that. But again the whole problem again.
Already investigating more online and I found some details from other users
1 / Both WIFI and Bluetooth are on the same card ( the q disconnected and reconnected )
2 / If the card was wrong , losing the WIFI Bluetooth should lose , but I tried Bluetooth and has no problems
3 / Reported that resetting PRAM or SMC but still, in my case, does not work.
Now all I have left to rule is the WIFI antenna that is located ( if I remember correctly ) for the bottom of the screen, and according to several users this tends to fail from constant use to close or open the MBP (or either to cover or uncover ) , and sometimes it just heats and heats close to this area .
Has anyone had a similar problem? My MBP turns 2 only on March 7, 2014 , I can not believe all that cost me and now is about to fail , I have a Sony VAIO Core 2 Duo for about 5 years (or more) ago and is still running and has been dropped many times and nothing has ever happened : (
Additional data on my MBP ,
Several months ago ( long before the problem with the WIFI) I changed the hard drive for an SSD ( 250GB Corsair Neutron X ) .
There is a problem that often makes me too, is that when you close the MBP ( to open ) , and open it back again ( out of sleep) the following happens :
1 / It instantly freezes when waking from sleep and I have a long wait to enter the password.
2 / When you leave idle normal let me put the password, but just when giving ENTER freezes
3 / Out of sleep, let me put the key, ENTER and when I load the desktop freezes
    Another problem :
This only happened to me a few times , as I mentioned , my MBP is formatted ( have Mavericks ) before formatted (clean install without time machine) , I closed the MBP ( I sent to sleep) and the open the screen was black , but as with bright, and not leave the state, turned off force ( pressing the button) , start the MBP again (power on) charged normal gray screen with apple but with a fairly low brightness, spent a few seconds and turned the brightness to normal and started normally .
I hope some can help me with these problems.
PD : I'm from Peru , if anyone knows a trusted service that please let me know .
    Thank you very much .

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

  • How can I clone my old macbook to my new Macbook Pro 768GB SSD

    Hi,
I have a 2 year old macbook and have just received my new Macbook Pro Retina dispaly with a 768gb SSD.
How can I clone my old drive to my new Macbook as the unit is sealed so I cant ge the drive out.
    thanks.

Bootable clones can only be used with the same model machine as there are machine specific hardware drivers involved that are different between different models of Mac's.
Probally the fastest way would be to clone the old Mac boot drive to a external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then connecting it to the new Mac and booting the new Mac (first time) into Setup Assistant and then use that to "migrate" accounts and programs over. Takes a few hours.
Transfering via Wifi does take FOREVER. like several days in some cases.
If you have the new Mac already setup, then use Migration Assitant in the Utilities folder.
However Setup Assistant and Migrations are not perfect and tend to fail badly if you had problems on the older Mac, sometimes these problems are unseen and only until you try to use the new Mac afterwards do they appear.
You might want to opt instead of installing the same name account on the new Mac, installing 10.8 compatible programs from original sources and then use the external clone of the old Mac drive to transfer just user files manually into the same Pcitures, Movies, Documents etc., folders.
Since you have a SSD, you can load programs later, it's hard drives that you want to install programs before user data to run them faster.
Get a cleaner machine doing it manaully that way and you know there is nothing nsaty hidden, like what Setup Assistant and Migrations often transfer.
