Macbook Pro 13" 10.9.2 Mavericks Samsung Monitor

Hi
I have just bought a Samsung LED Monitor SD390 and want to connect it to my Macbook. The sales assistant set me up with an HDMI cable that has the little plug that goes straight into the side of my Macbook (where the lightning symbol is)
When I turn the Samsung it just alternates between an analog and HDMI logo in top left corner and my Macbook Pro doesn't show any additional monitors in the System Preferences > Displays area
Have I got a monitor that will work with the Macbook and how do I connect them and make this work. It was bought for my new job and would like to get this sorted asap otherwise I need to take the monitor back and get one that works!
Thanks
Macbook Pro 13"
OS X 10.9.2
Mavericks

Yes, this was one of the first symptoms.  Also, shortly after screensaver started, screen would freeze.
I went to OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (COMBO) at:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Combo installation did solve the problem and has been working well since installation.
Hope this helps.

    Maverick and Your System message
I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?

  • Macbook Pro randomly restarting since installing Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I've got a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. Since I installed Mavericks, about 6 months ago, it's started restarting at random (it just goes black and then goes through the reboot cycle. Sometimes it can happen a few times in the same hour - sometimes once a week. It doesn't seem related to what programs I have open or how hot it is running. It often happens a few minutes after the machine has awoken from sleep, but this isn't always the case.
I was convinced that this was due to the faulty nVidia chip which was included in some mid-2010 MBPs so I took it to the Apple genius bar and showed them this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 (having first done a clean install of OSX).
They ran "VST (Video System Test) 1.0.3v5 for Macbook Pro (15-inch, mid-2010)" and it passed. They then took the laptop into the back room and "ran some more hardware tests", all of which passed too.
I bought the machine back to my house and started reinstalling software. About 10 minutes ago it restarted itself again (with the same GPU panic message and GPUPanic.cpp:127 line). The only difference between this restart and those before I reinstalled Mavericks is that the previous restarts would be proceeded by a "your computer needs to restart because of a problem" whereas just now no message was displayed until the computer fully rebooted, and then a "your computer was rebooted because of an issue" message was displayed.
I've only installed a few pieces of software, and nothing that I thought would mess with the graphics drivers.
Could anyone please take a look at my logs and see if anything looks amiss? The genius has stressed that it cannot be hardware related so hopefully somebody will spot something.
The only other thing perhaps worth mentioning is that I have 3rd party RAM and a 3rd party SSD harddrive in there. Could either of these be responsible?
    Thanks,
    Joe

I just wanted to share my experiences with Apple recently.
To give some background: my mid-2010 Macbook Pro started restarting randomly after I upgraded to Mavericks and the logs indicated that it was the GPU issue. I am currently residing in Dublin so my nearest Apple store is over 100 miles away in Belfast (a 2-3 hour drive or train journey).
I first took the machine to the Apple store on the 8th March, having first made an appointment at the Genius Bar. I had entered details of the issue into the concierge system and the Genius seemed to know what he was dealing with. He ran the GPU test - which it promptly passed - but, after this point, I didn't see the Genius again as he disappeared into a back room, never to return.
About 20 minutes later (as I was beginning to get annoyed) someone else came and asked if I was being helped. I explained the situation to him and he hurriedly offered to "take it in the back to run further tests". I agreed and left the machine with him - but in all the kerfuffle I left my charger behind.
I went back and collected my laptop as the store was closing. I briefly discussed the test results with a different Genius, who suggested that it must be a software issue. He said that - as I had restored the OS to factory settings before the visit - it was most probably fixed. Given that it had not restarted since I restored the machine (the night before), I agreed and left.
Unfortunately, I didn't realise that I'd forgotten my charger until I got home. I called the store the next day but was told that it's "not Apple policy" to post things out and that if I wanted the charger I'd have to collect it from the store myself. I was then told that it would probably be better for me to "just buy a new one" given the distance involved!
Anyway, the next day I was reinstalling some software and the machine restarted again. I made a post on here and was told that the logs still suggested a faulty GPU, and that the Genius should have spotted it.
So I made another trip to Belfast!
First, I tried to collect my charger. After some crossed wire between staff members, it turned out that someone had labelled my charger and left it on the side for me to collect, but then someone else had then thrown it away. To Apple's credit, however, they gave me a new one off the shelf without hesitation.
Next, the Genius ran the same test again and this time it failed. I asked the Genius why it would be the case that the EXACT same test would pass one day and fail the next but he didn't have any ideas. It is *my* theory that the test not only checks the GPU itself, but also looks in the log folder for logs that indicate a faulty GPU and that, by restoring the OS before I took it in, I effectively "cleared" this folder and made it impossible to detect.
Anyway, he next mentioned that it was out of warranty and that I would need to pay for a repair. However, I had a printout from the trading standards site which outlined the Sale of Goods act and how (under UK law) we are protected for 6 years from purchase if a product is defective. He spoke to a couple of managers and agreed to replace the motherboard without charge.
Next, he wanted proof that I'd purchased the machine directly from the Apple website, as apparently their records only go back 18 months (!). Unfortunately, I lost some emails a couple of years back and no longer had the receipt but - after another discussion with managers - he agreed to proceed anyway.
He then said that I would have to come and collect the machine in a few days. The trading standards guidelines say that the RETAILER is responsible for arranging collection and delivery of the faulty product so I asked whether they could ship it to Dublin. However, he argued that to do this I would have to rearrange everything through AppleCare and have them collect/deliver the machine. So, having gotten this far (and not wanting them to change their minds), I just agreed.
Anyway, I received an email saying that it was ready a few days later so I went back to Belfast again and collected it. So far (touch wood) it's been working perfectly and without a single restart.
    So, the things to remember:
    1) The test may not detect the issue the first time but that doesn't mean it's not there
    2) Restoring OSX to factory settings MAY impede the ability for the test to detect the issue
    3) It doesn't matter if you're out of warranty if you're covered by Consumer Law (check out the law in your country)
    4) Don't leave your charger in the Apple store!
NB: I'm not a lawyer, of course, and none of this constitutes legal advice; I'm just hoping it will help some people as there seem to be a LOT of folks having this issue.

I have a new mac book pro and the os x mavericks says I don't have this and it won't install. What do I do? Thank you.

If you have a new MacBook Pro, it should already have Mavericks (10.9). To verify, click the Apple logo in the top left corner and select "About this Mac". What does it state for version?

I use the files on the Local Area Network on my windows computer by typing in the I.P address in the library. Kindly guide me how i can use these files stored over the Local Area Network.

I disabled GateKeeper's automatic blocking of unrecognised developers, and so I was able to install the driver.

I also borrowed a USB hub from a friend and it didn't make a difference.

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

You have too much junk installed…
    The 'easy' way - reinstall
I think you will be quickest backing up the HD to an external disk (check it still boots!). Erase the internal HD, reinstall 10.9, migrate your USER DATA ONLY back to 10.9, reinstall the apps you use, then delete the old login items & user launchd jobs that migrated. You should have a stable system at the end of it.
The hard way - 'cleaning up'
Firstly search these forums for opinions on running Sophos's AV - it adds extra work to your system & many have had issues with it on 10.9. At the very least ensure it is the latest release & 10.9 supported. Sophos is running 7 system level background jobs and 2 kernel extensions! These all can modify how the system runs.
At the end of cleanup you may have a stable system - it really depends on how much effort you put into clearing out all the system level jobs that are not compatible with 10.9. The developers don't make it easy to remove software too, so you may have a lot of searching to do (for instructions & uninstallers).

Uninstall Jacksta, the 'startup items' have been deprecated since 10.4 - Apple told developers to stop using them years ago.
Update all the other apps listed or find uninstallers/ removal instructions to correctly remove the software.
Are all those sierrawireless and novatelwireless drivers used or needed anymore?
Can you uninstall BlueStacks? It's failing to run jobs inside your user account, get rid of things that don't work (or update them & check they do work).
Java's updater is failing to run - is Java up to date? Do you need Java installed? It isn't installed on Mac OS anymore because of it's lousy security record. Update or remove if you don't need it.
You could try removing Sophos & find that the Mac runs OK - but eventually having all the old kernel extensions & background jobs around will eventually cause something else to break.

  • How can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3

Does anyone know how can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3. Thanks.

    Sean and Andy -
I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
         (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
         (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
         (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
         (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
(E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
(E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'--  routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
(E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
(E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ???  As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA.
    Ed

Is there a compact flash and SDXC card reader with USB3 and or thunderbolt connections that will work with new MacBook Pro retina laptops running OSX Mavericks please?

Yes, I too had this problem.
I was issued an update from Apple for a new version software as well as a new version of Lightrooom and now it shows up on the desktop and in finder as it should.
MacBook Pro Retina running 10.8.2 (12C54)
    Lightroom running 4.1
    Hope that helps.
