MacBook Pro 13" 2.5 or 2.9 GHz?

Hello Apple Community,
I am currently shifting from a PC to my first MacBook and cannot seem to decide which MB Pro will suit me best.
I will be a freshman in college this fall. I don't plan on using programs such as Photoshop very frequently. I rather plan on using the basics to complete assignments given to me. I may edit video once in a while, but, like before, not very frequently.
My school offers the MB Pro 13" 2.5 GHz for $999 and the 2.9 GHz for $1399. Being a college student, I would like to save some money since this is coming out of my pocket becuase I don't want my parents to spend any more money on me. (Not being stingy)
Which laptop would you recommend me?
Also, does anyone know the difference between a Licensed Microsoft Office and a regular Microsoft Office? My school also offers the Licensed Microsoft Office 2011 for $33 compared to the regular Microsoft Office 2011 at Amazon for $87.
Thank you for your help!

Hi there,
I have just recently bought the below:
I use mine for buiness (working from home, keeping in touch via email and amending word docs / spreadsheets etc). I guess it depends on the size of memory you need and also the screen size, if you are not going to be editing video etc I'm sure you'll be ok with the 13" screen. You can of course always purchase memory drives / portable hard drives if you require more memory at a later date.
If you want to save money then I would suggest the first option.
As far as the Microsoft Office goes I am unsure of the exact difference, I bought the follwoing:
I find this great, it has everything you need really, I actually bought it with 2 other colleagues so it worked out much cheaper.
I hope this helps (alittle).
Kind regards and good luck.

  • MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.8/2.8 GHz/Intel Core 2 Duo/with 4 G memory and would like to hook up an external monitor.

I have a MacBook Pro, OS 10.6.8/2.8 GHz/Intel Core 2 Duo/with 4 G memory and would like to add an external monitor.  I have the usual ports; 2 USBs, Ethernet, as well as a couple small ports that I do not know what they are for...  sorry .  First of all, is it possible to add a monitor or TV screen for a larger screen when using?  Secondly, if this can be done, what do I need to buy?
    Thanks so much!

Yes, it should be possible. I think every MacBook Pro ever sold has some kind of port for an external monitor. You would have to nail down which kind of port your MBP has and where on your MBP it is located.
Can you find the little "getting started" pamphlet, manual, or PDF that came with it? It should name the connectors.
My guess? If the only ports you have besides USB and Ethernet are smaller than those, you could have a Mini DisplayPort.

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris

i have a macbook pro 15" retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram when i try to download an HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD? i went to the support on the apple website and looked at the specs that a computer has to meet in order to play HD movies and mine is well above them. Why can't i play the movies?

That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."

See this knowledge base article. Also, you might want to update to 10.6.8 (don't know that that will fix your problem, but it's the latest version of Snow Leopard).

    (using latest AE CC2014)
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 with 2.7 Ghz Core i7 processor 16GB memory Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 1024MB processor, doing some heavy AE renderings and just realized that this machine says it has 8 Cores? I'm had not yet turned on Multprocessing in Preferences Should I be?
Should I leave 1 or 2 cores for other applications?
RAM allocation per background CPU is defaulted set to 3GB
Also for Adobe Media Encoder: in preferences under Video Rendering /Rendere it is set at Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) is that the best config for this computer?

    How much ram?
The best settings depend on what you are working on. Here are mine for a nearly identical system:
It's usually best to keep memory blocks in 4GB blocks. If my workflow is more in other apps I'll switch out other apps to 8 gb if things start to slow down. Because of my usual project settings I keep MP turned off on this machine, but for some projects I'll turn it on. If you decide to experiment to MP then keep an eye on the Actual CPU's that will be used and make sure the numbers add up. Other applications and Actual Cores should add up the the total in your system.

Apple removed some Retina MacBooks Pro and started selling other ones with slightly better hardware last week. If you have this MacBook, you can continue using it because, although Apple has upgraded the hardware, changes aren't big compared to your MacBook Pro model

Do you have any filters applied to your clips?
This happened to me before, I accidently had applied a broadcast safe filter to a color matte that was black....
I figured it out by duplicating my sequence and deleting items from my timeline 1 by 1 until I was able to export a reference movie.
Anywho, export again, this time with "self contained" movie selected.
Then try to import to Compressor.

  • Hello everyone I need help! Why i cant Update to Mountain Lion if Im gonna try to update my Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5. It always says "Your Software is up to date" which is only Mac Os X ver. 10.7.5

Not sure what exactly you did (or not), but it looks as if you should attempt doing it all again, only this time all right and by the book. Many millions have done so, and sure it'll work for you as well.
If you've indeed purchased ML already, you'll find it exactly there in the App Store: under Purchases.

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

  • Just downloaded mavericks, now iPhoto won't load because of an error message that says "You can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac" . I have a 17" MacBook Pro, mid 2010 model running 2.53 GHz and Intel Core I5,

I just downloaded the new Mavericks operating sytem on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 17" 2.53GHz, Intel Core I5 machine. My IPhoto is no longer working at all, I'm getting an error message that says - "You Can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac". I also loaded Mavericks onto my other MacBook Pro 17", mid 2009 model and everything works fine. I would think that the newer Mac would easily work with IPhoto. Also, when I try to download from the App Store, it asks for my Apple ID and Password, I enter it, and then the little spinning color wheel just spins forever, with nothing ever happening. I tried downloading the IPhoto Upgrade but it never actually downloads, HELP!!!

What version of iPhoto do you have installed?  Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.  It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 2.3 VS 2.6 GHz Which is the bang for your buck?

    Hello everyone,
So today i am contemplating whether i should go with the 2.3 or the 2.6 GHz macbook pro with retina display, no matter which one i get i will be upgrading the ram to 16GB and leaving the processors at the same clock speed. The price differentation from the 2.3 to the 2.6 is quite a big leap going from 2496.06 to 3174.96 that is a difference of $ 678.90, I am a college business student who does school work so, microsoft word, powerpoint, excel, text edit and other regular school programs on the computer, i also do web browsing, emailing, itunes, downloading, bootcamp, videos, photos and playing games such as Dota 2, Crysis 2, Modern Warefare series, Battlefield 3 and so on.
So my main concern with getting the 2.3 GHz is that it has 256 GB less of SSD than the 2.6, this worries me because i use bootcamp extensively so im just worried i might run out of space when doing all the things i do on my macbook, also another thing that i need the apple community to clear up is the CPU for the things i do is 2.3 GHz enough power for what i wanna do, or will it be overkill if i go for the 2.6 GHz?
Take in mind that i do have enough money for the 2.6 GHz one, but if i do not need it i will not spend the extra $678.90. So in clear detailed explanation can you guys and girls please explain which one you prefer, and why you prefer it?, also please give me some suggestions on things i could do with the $ 700.00 i have if i did go with the 2.3 GHz
Both models really appeal to me excluding that they are the exact same only difference being the CPU and the size of the SSD. So what do you guys think is the 2.3 GHz good enough for what i do or shall i go with the 2.6 GHz?
    Best answer will be noted.

So here is the thought process I used to buy:
    1. Memory soldered on the motherboard so buy the max. I dont plan to upgrade this computer for years.
    2. Faster CPU is just not necessary unless you are doing computaional tasks. Even if so, cI an see no reason why the base model i7 cannot handle just about anything
    3. The 256GB SSD is plenty big. Can see no reason to shell out BIG $$$ just so I can carry around media that I am not watching. With USB 3 and TB there will be ample opportunities to get a far less expensive, and very fast external harddrive. Something that is easy to carry around. I expect something like the g-drive slim will be available in USB 3. Right now I use an external 6gps drive to backup on my Win system via USB 3 and its fast. I expect the same performance on the Mac.
    4. I have 2 external monitors and so I bought 2 TB to DVI adapters.

    1. I understand that there is a significant jump in the graphics from 256MB to 1GB. How would this be reflected in my photo edition / facetime & skype utilization? Would there be a difference in operating temperature?
    2. AES-NI: only included in 2.2GHz. Apparently, main benefit would be speed of encryption when and if utilized by future OS updates.
    3. VT-d: only included in 2.2 GHz. Not sure what this represents.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Below is a link that I found on the Apple models that have (and don't have) AES-NI:

  • Macbook Pro Early 2011, Core i7 2.0 GhZ, won't shutdown

I have recently bought a Macbook pro with core i7 Processor from Apple store. I restored my backup from an iMac 27 I owned previously. Everything worked fine for about a month. But from past couple of weeks, it won't turn off. A blue screen appears and the loading circle keeps spinning. I have to press and hold the power button to turn it off.
Does anyone have the same problem?
Please let me know if some one has a solution for this.
    Thanks

Start by unplugging all your peripherals and shutting off bluetooth and wifi and testing.
Turn off automatic login, and allow Guest Users to log into the system, then reboot and log directly into Guest and attempt a shutdown.
depending on the issue being system-Wide versus User specifiic the troubleshooting steps will vary greatly.
