Macbook Pro 13" 2.8GHz i7 vs 15" 2.6GHz i7-which to buy?

I am upgrading this year to get retina and SSD. I currently have a late 2011 Macbook Pro with a 2.4GHz i7 processor, 16GB ram, 1TB hard drive, and a AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB graphics card. I am considering portability issues of the 13" vs the 15". I work in the court system and have been using my iPad in court but I will be loosing that option when the state switches us to VPN at the end of the year. In shopping I noticed that the 13" Macbook Pro maxes out with a 2.8 GHz i7 processor whereas the 15" is offered with either 2.3 GHz or 2.6GHz. I definitely want an i7. In my experience it just works better for me because I usually have Parallels with Windows 7, Word, Excel, Safari with multiple tabs, mail, and calendar open all at once, bare minimum. I do some photo editing but I do like to play some higher memory games every now and then. Portability aside, will the 2.8GHz processor in the 13" make a big difference over the 2.3GHz or 2.6GHz in the 15"? In anyone's opinion, will it help make up the difference for the single graphics card in the 13" Macbook Pro? For reference I play WoW occasionally, STO, and various console ports. Thanks for any advice.

Hi
I got a Macbook pro i7 so its a similar spec. I would advise against gaming on the Macbook.
The CPU temperatures goes through the roof. For example RealTemp measured the CPU cores at 87 and 91 C and GPU at 69 C after playing CM 2010 in Bootcamp for 30 mins. That's with placing the macbook at an angle on a desk so there was a gap for air to circulate under the laptop.
The maximum temperature envelop for the i7 is 105 C according to Intel website, the i5 might run a bit cooler, still I don't like to push the CPU for a long period of time so close to their max temperature.
The i5, i7 macbook is very powerful, I run it with Windows 7 using VM ware all the time. Its not the lightest laptop on the market, but its still very portable in a backpack. You can also buy a 26" monitor very cheap now days so you can hook the macbook to a bigger screen at home.
Hope this helps

Nevermind - I answered my own question, which is I CAN"T READ ANY BOOKS I purchased in iBooks on my MacBook Pro.  If I want to read on my mac I have to use Kindle or Nook.  Which means any book I've already purchased through iBooks has to be read on my iPad.  Kind of a drag because there are times when it's more convenient for me to read while I'm sitting with my Mac.

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

  • I have a MacBook Pro Late 2011 and I'm wondering if I install Windows 7 Ultimate to this MacBook Pro with this Full Retail Version. And if so, which bit to use either 32-bit or 64-bit since I have both disks.

    64 bit.
32 bit won't use all your computer's ram.
64 bit allows you to run 32 bit programs
    Your computer is 64 bit
    New programs use 64 bit.
There is no reason to use the 32 bit version of Windows.

Do I need to buy a larger Time Capsule?
Probably yes. You might be able to get the full backup of the new MacBook Pro on the Time Capsule, but it will not be long before the Time Capsule is out of space.
Better to add a new Time Capsule and backup the new MacBook Pro to the new Time Capsule, and keep the old MacBook backing up to the old Time Capsule.
If you do not want to add a new Time Capsule, another option would be to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with new backups of both Macs and move forward.

  • MacBook Pro 15 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo 2 and Sony Bravia KDL-46NX800

    Hello,
I now have a Monoprice HDMI to Mini Displayport. I am trying to connect my Macbook Pro 15 to my new recently bought Sony Bravia 46'. I also have SwitchResX on my mbp.
Anyway, it's not working at all. The Sony is not detecting my MBP.
I fiddle with SwitchResX and nothing works. I look everywhere for my TV's specific EDID profiles. No luck.
Anyone out there care to help me out, please.

The other way around is the same. I tried "detect display", nothing happens. Nothing showing another display at all.
If it was a defective cable then I would NOT get a replacement because I just don't want the hassle of working on it and the problem will be the same.
Most likely to mail it back to get cash back.
Umm, to add, I am running 10.6.4 and have NOT yet upgrade it to 10.6.5. I still don't think that'll solve the problem.
    Any ideas?

  • The spinning "wheel of death" does NOT go away! I've loaded too much stuff on my computer (including the entire Adobe CS6 software) and I want to delete everything on my macbook pro and start over? How do I clean everything up without buying MacKeeper?

I use my MacBook Pro (Late 2009) for EVERYTHING and I have loaded so many apps, even doubles of some, I think!   My computer is running really SLOW and I think it is because I don't have enough memory.
I just installed the new Adobe CS6 and that was a BIG mistake.  The spinnning wheel of death doesn't stop! I wish I could load that program on my computer so I can use it "on the go", but I can't stand the spinning wheel!
I want to clean up my computer and get rid of EVERYTHING on it!!     Then, re-install the factory settings to run Lion.  I believe this will make the wheel stop spinning.
However, how do I make sure that all of the extra stuff that is attached to the app, ( including all the cache') is deleted too?   I don't want to have to buy MacKeeper!
I am hoping the computer wizards or the apple team can give me an answer on how to clean up everything and start over.  I have saved everything on my desktop mac.

Thank you so much for the help!  I had heard bad things about MacKeeper and I don't want to screw up my macbook  any more than it already is!  I will do as you suggest.  Do you believe this is the best solution for the problem I described?
Should I load my Adobe Creative Suite 6 (in the cloud version) on an external hard drive?
I am so tired of this spinning wheel....should I avoid putting the CS6 on my macbook pro altogether?
I have it on my desk top mac, but wanted to be able to take the photo editing with me when I am "out and about".  I know I should probably buy the ipad, which would transport much easier, but even the ipad probably doesn't have the capacity to hold all the Adobe CS6 apps, correct?

  • HT204135 Hi! Okay I am about to purchase a printer for my MacBook Pro w/retinal display. I would like to know which

Can someone tell me which printer would be most compatible and easiest to install?
I have never owned a wireless printer and feel intimidated by the very thought of connecting a printer to my MacBook Pro with Retinal display and Mountain Lion.
I feel overwhelmed by the info on the net. Thank you from a concerned senior citizen.

    I would need a printer/scanner.
Then have a look at the MG6320

  • If a macbook pro with retina display's hard drive fail, do you have to buy a new computer

I am going to get a macbook pro and i'm not sure whether to go for a normal 15 or 15 with retina, i would prefer the retina for what i need it for but this is pretty important

The Retina model doesn't have a hard drive - it has flash memory storage (the same as an SSD, sort of). The flash storage is easily replaceable - even by the user - but the RAM is soldered in, so if you purchase a Retina display model, it's best to opt for the full 16MB of RAM.
Apple sells the non-Retina models with both hard drives and SSDs but their pricing for SSDs is ridiculous. You can add your own at a fraction of the price.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have an older WD Passport mini hard drive plugged into4 year old macbook pro. Needs additional application to download recorded tv show, which app might i need?

I have an older WD Passport mini drive plugged into my Macbook Pro. Once connected I can't watch recorded TV show. What additional software do I need to download to my Pro to view?

Depends on what codec the video files are. You SHOULD be able to use quicktime. But I have found Quicktime to not be able to play all codecs.

  • How good is macbook pro compared to 13" macbook pro retina and is the macbook pro has haswell processor and  will I get further updates if I buy macbook pro without retina

will I get further updates if I buy macbook pro without retina
I do not know what you mean by that. Any currently produced Mac is likely to be supported for as long as every other Apple product that has ever been produced. Most Apple products are relegated to "vintage" status approximately six years after which they are discontinued by Apple, meaning that the non-Retina MBP is likely to be supported through 2020.

  • I have Garage Band for my Macbook Pro. It runs on OS 10.5.8. Can I buy JamPack loops and sounds for it? Thanks.

Can I purchase JamPack loops and sounds for MacBook Pro, running on OS 10.5.8? I already have Garage Band app.

First you would need to meet these requirements:
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

  • MacBook Pro 15' 2.8GHz 2009 not charging battery.

    Hi there!
This problem just came out of no where!
My battery doesn't charge anymore. Also the date gets back to 2001 every time the MBP powers up.
I tried to re set the SMC and nothing happened. After released all keys and power the MBP the Magsafe didn't change colour as described.
Another note: the instructions don't say the time that you actually have to hold the keys down for?
How long do you have to wait before powering up your MBP etc. Nt very specific.
Anyway, The battery information says that Battery is "Not Charging" on the System Profiler and the drop down menu on the top right battery icon. My MBP is still under warranty but I don't usually panic before go to the Mac Shop and get help. "It takes a long time to get help by a genius in Melbourne, even if you book a time" Poor guys they don't stop.
I cleaned all the surfaces of the Magsafe and MBP and I also have a second MBP and used the other Magsafe with the same issue.
On the System Profiler info the battery seems to be Ok with just one cycle.
Any help will be very appreciated.
    Cheers
