Macbook pro 13" (2009) boot-up slow or freezes after 8GB RAM upgrade?

The RAM is recognized when I check "about Mac". This is intermittent since I went from 2GB of RAM to 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) of RAM. Should I receed the boards? Are there other ways to diagnose why the system boots slowly or freezes on the blue screen before the logon screen appears? in one instance when the boot-up failed; froze on blue screen, I forced a power down and then rebooted again and the system allowed me to log on as usual. Currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. upgraded RAM in order to prepare for update to OS X Maverick 10.9.2. 8 GB of RAM by Crucial, purchased from Amazon.com, MAC specifications matched what was required. Please advise. Thank you.

what do you mean "what exact MBP do you have?". what information are you looking for?
The 'model identifier' that can be found in System Profiler (System Information)>Hardware over view or the data that is generated when you enter the MBP serial number in the appropriate field in this link:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
Based on the information you have provided, I believe your MBP's 'model identifier' is 5.5.
The correct RAM specifications for this MBP are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  Does the new RAM conform to these specifications?
Ciao.

  • My macbook pro runs slow, iTunes videos keep stuttering. Nothing has worked to solve this issue. Macbook Pro 13-inch mid 2012 2.5GHz i5 with 8GB RAM upgrade.

    Hello everyone.
I have been having this issue for a few months now and nothing works to resolve it. The biggest issue is that iTunes videos constantly stutter ever few seconds, the audio portion of the video is not effected. The most I have open at once is Safari, Skype, and iTunes, and possibly Open Office. Videos will even stutter with nothing else open other than iTunes. At times it sounds like the computer is running something in the background from hard drive noise.
I even upgraded the RAM to 8GB and it still has this problem! Nothing looks wrong in Activity Monitor other than occasionally the memory usage spikes up to 6GB, but even then the memory pressure graph is green. I dont understand how these non-intensive programs can use that much. The hard drive is barely 1/3 full.
Please help with a solution as nothing has worked so far. Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

  • 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM v/s 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade?

    HI All
This is my first post here. As mentioned I have a fall 2011 15"Macbook Pro fall 2011 with Core i7 2.0 GHZ, 8GB RAM and i was thinking of buying a 2013 Macbook Air 13". Is it a good upgrade? I do light video editing and day to day tasks like word processing, email etc.
How would the performance of the Macbook Air with the Core i5 with 4 gb Ram be compared to the old Macbook Pro 15 with Core i7 Quad 2.0 ghz with 8 GB Ram.
    Thanks
    Sunny

The main advantage would be a solid state drive. This will improve performance and speed moreso than RAM considerations. The disadvantage will be a loss of storage space. Moreover, one of the disadvantages of a SSD is that the more storage space used on it, the slower it becomes and the quicker it will deteroriate.
If you do video editing, I would take the GPU into consideration. Does your 15'' come with a discrete GPU? The integrated GPU on the MBA (intel HD 5000) is better than the 2011 MBP integrated GPU (3000), but it includes no discrete GPU.
Depending on how much storage space you use on your HDD currently + how many graphics intensive programs you run, you may want to consider upgrading your current machine with a SSD, upgrading your RAM on current machine to 16 gb (~160$ through macmemory or newegg), or purchasing a new Macbook Pro rather than Macbook Air.
    Last thing I would add:
You will never be able to upgrade MBA RAM. It is soldered to the logicboard on the new models, non-retina included. You may wan to opt with the 8 GB RAM configuration.

  • Macbook Pro 10.7 - Suddenly extremely slow and freezes

Hi, I've had my Macbook for about a year now and never had any problems up until now. All of a sudden today I turned on my Macbook Pro (running 10.7.1) and it took about a minute and 20 seconds to boot up. Once the desktop background picture shows up, the dock will come up about 5 seconds later, then the top bar 5 seconds later, then all of the icons on my desktop about 5 seconds later. If I click on ANYTHING the spinning beachball will come up and then changes back to the mouse icon in about a minute. I can't open any applications in the dock or open any folders, nothing happens and then the beachball comes back. I have tried booting in safe mode and that seems to work okay, but still a little slower than normal. Checked the activity monitor and nothing major seems to be going on. Reset PRAM, nothing changed. Checked disk utility and everything was fine. If anyone has any idea what might be wrong, please help me out here. I appreciate it, and thank you!

This seems like a very common issue! I purchased the OS X Lion the very next day after its release.. used it for a few days on my Macbook Pro.. I also updated all my applications (adobe, office, ilife etc) to make it run smoothly and compatible on the Lion.. but after a month or so, my machine became like the first macintosh Mr. Jobs made.. VERYYY SLOOWW!!!!! it would take 5-7 minutes to boot up, and the dock wud also take time!! The beach ball occupied my screen so much time, that I even forgot how the normal cursor looked like!
I decided to upgraded my RAM to 8GB, but same problem! I had like thousands of mails and didnt even find any solution to downgrade back to leopard!
I wasted almost a week to re-install snow leopard and all my applications!! and luckily google apps saved me with all my mails! Since then I have been ignoring every single update! I am happy with snow leopard!!
LION IS VERYY BUGGY! I wasted my $30 odd bucks!!! I often search for freezing beach ball lion!!! and seems there is no solution till now... NEVER GOING TO UPGRADE!!!

You may wish to read about maintenance and upkeep of the OS X, plus other
information, across several topics in this site with topics divided into Guides:
    •Tech Guides - TheSafeMac:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
Sometimes, items may have been inadvertently downloaded by accident or due
to poor advisement, and of those some can be a cause of slowness in Mac OS X.
Also, the use of scanning antivirus software can be a cause of slow and disruptive
system issues; since antivirus for the most part is not effective due to the nature of
the Mac OS X and the inability of an AV application to have records of unknown, &
unsubstantiated or rumored issues in the wild, since few or none are known to exist.
The note in the etrecheck report of excessive Page Outs, implies directly that the
computer may need to have more RAM installed; a matching pair of higher capacity
correct spec RAM chips, could be purchased from a reputable source & installed.
As much as, perhaps 16GB in a RAM upgrade, depending on the MacBook build.
All of those red-lettered items in the report that did not load, appear to be system
parts; perhaps that may be something to investigate. Not sure why that is...
{Because today is part of a weekend, I'd suspect the time of day and weekday are
both behind the lack of an earlier reply to your post here. Also, if there have been
weather or other disruptions in the lives of those volunteers who offer help, then
maybe they've had to modify their plans around such events. Or power outages.
    We had one here for more than an hour, and everything went out. Even phones.}
So hopefully some other knowledgable readers may contribute ideas on how to
resolve the issues; troubleshooting may be helpful, and to read through sections
of TheSafeMac to see if there is any malware, adware, or other odd activity that
may point to a cause; removal suggestions for those are in that site. Also, if you
had visited any torrent or sharing sites, or downloaded free yet contaminated items
from software download sites, they could also affect your computer. There are
a few areas in that web site worth reading through.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • 2012 Macbook Pro won't boot from CD and freezes in single user mode

I'm rebuilding a macbook pro. Everyting was fine until I tried to install Snow Leopard from the disk. It goes to the Apple symbol no spinning wheel and you can hear the drive working for a few seconds but then stops. I've also tried booting to sinlge user mode but it just freezes after Loading System\Library\Caches\com.apple.kext.cahces\Startup\Extensions.
I've tried resetting the PRAM as well.

If you have a 2012 MacBook Pro, you can't install Snow Leopard because it's not compatible, so it's normal that you can't start OS X.
Now, you have to install OS X Lion or Mountain Lion again. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and reinstall OS X. After reinstalling OS X, you will be able to use your computer.
You can't run an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, because of some reasons:
    1. The hardware isn't compatible.
    2. The firmware restricts the installation of older versions on the computer.
    3. It's illegal: Apple doesn't allow you to install an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, and it doesn't mind the method you use (a "normal" installation or a virtual machine)

  • Macbook Pro 17 cannot boot into Mac OS anymore after making partition on windows

My Mac is a Macbook Pro 17", I got it from my friend (no original disc).
So after upgrading it to Mavericks (I was unable to install Windows using Boot camp of 10.6.8), Boot Camp successfully let me install Windows 7 Professional (x64).
The problem is that, I shrink the Boot Camp partition, and create another NTFS partition (so I can store data in the second partition as I usually do when using Windows). Now, I cannot boot into Mac OS anymore. Holding Command + Option + R does nothing, holding Option while startup shows a hard drive named Windows (instead of Mac HD). And no Recovery HD too

    shakhriyor,
you’re going to need to purchase a replacement pair of the original grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from Apple to be able to fix this problem.

  • My Early 2008 Macbook Pro will not boot with anything greater than 3GB of Ram.

    Early 2008 Macbook Pro 4,1
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)
    OS X 10.8.4
    Serial: W88450LR1XR
I keep reading mixed reviews saying that 3GB is the max while others say this system supports up to 6GB.  I have tried both Kingston and Crucial and PNY and I get the same results.  I can have 1x2GB stick and 1x1GB stick but not 2x2 GB sticks.  Both 2 GB sticks work independently but they will not work together.  They are PC2-5300 667 MHz.
I would really love to have at least 4 GB of ram in this computer.  Is it not possible?
    Thanks in advance.
    Symptoms:
If I put 2x2 GB in the computer and power it up, the little light on the front of the computer comes on but the screen stays black.  No post beeps or anything to indicate a failure or that it's running (except the light that comes on when I hit the power button)

Ok - so no one is replying.   I just contacted Other World Computing who says that my Laptop will support up to 6GB of ram.  I just ordered the memory directly from them.   I have 6GB in the mail and should arrive tomorrow.  I will report that if their guarenteed ram will work.

  • OSX 10.75 Macbook Pro 30 Minute Boot and Slow After Clean Install

    Here is my problem.
I recently purchased a mabook pro which was dropped with the intentions of fixing the screen.
I was able to initially install OSX with Internet recovery, then for some reason on reboot the password would not work.
I was able to fix the password problem, but the extremely slow boot time persists.
This is a fresh install so I am not sure why it is so slow.

The Hardrive was going bad. I had another hardrive that I knew was good taken from another Mac, I swapped them. With the other drive the computer booted up fine. I later took the drive to the Genius bar and the confirmed what I already knew.

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2009) being extremely slow

I brought it into the Apple Store after it wouldn't boot, and they recommended a new hard drive, so I went out and bought a 500GB for $50, and installed it myself with no problems.
Now, I've had no problems for the past 3 weeks, but just recently I can't even open the finder, or a preview of a file without waiting at least 10 seconds.
This is a huge problem, and I've had nothing but bad luck with Apple for the past few months. Any ideas?

    Hello,
Maybe you are having the same trouble than me ?
    You have :
    - a 2009 MBP that is a 5.3 model according to Mactracker
    - this model should have installed the infamous " EFI Firmware Update 1.7 "
    - a new faster hardrive
My MBP doesn't even see his new internal HD, but works fine with the same drive on firewire 800.
The only solution seems to downgrade from EFI 1.7 to 1.6. Someting only an Apple Store Genius can do. I have an appointment this week to do so.
Another idea : Change the desktop image of your MBP, Ironman might bee out of battery .
See my post and tell me if it works for you : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3035208

  • MacBook pro won't boot up with the screen after Yosemite

since updating to Yosemite  my Mac book hasn't woken up from sleep
i can hear it turn on when I hit the power button but no screen or keyboard lights up
    really need some help please
my Mac book pro is only 2-3 years old

    Hi Bizzlewood,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know it can be both frustrating and concerning when your computer doesn’t seem to wake from sleep. There may be a few different troubleshooting steps I would suggest in this situation. Please refer to the attached article for troubleshooting information.
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
Your computer cannot wake from sleep
Make sure your computer isn't powered off by pressing the power key for one second.
If you're using an external display, make sure your display is not powered off or unplugged.
If you are using a Mac notebook:
Make sure the computer's battery is charged. Try connecting the power adapter to the computer, then press the power button for one second to see if the computer powers on.
Make sure the AC power cord is connected securely to the power outlet, and that the outlet it is working correctly. Confirm the power adapter or cable is attached firmly.
If your computer is plugged into a power strip, make sure the power strip is not turned off. Check to make sure other items connected to the power strip are receiving power.
Confirm the right power adapter is connected on Mac notebook computers. If a lower wattage power adapter is used than the one that came with your Mac, it may not provide enough power to charge the battery while the computer is powered on. Make sure there is no debris in the MagSafe port that might prevent charging. When your MagSafe cable is connected properly, you should see a green or orange light on the connector.
If the issue is still not resolved after verifying the above information, please be sure to follow the steps listed at the bottom of the article in the Additional troubleshooting section.
    Cheers,
    Joe

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

Is there a list of the files and/or folders that contain Settings and Preferences which can be copied from the old system to the new?

with your cc apps you should try to use the sync feature.  that's never worked consistently for me, but when it does work, it's helpful.
there are preference folders and presets and settings that you could copy but you're better off installing fresh because a common problem for people with adobe program issues is a settings issue.
