MacBook Pro 13 (2011) Ethernet problems

Hi all! I bought my laptop 3 months ago. almost immediately there was a problem with the Ethernet. The essence is this: after 2-3 hours it stops working. That is, as if the cord is not plugged in. I upgraded my operation system to 10.7.2 but the problem remains.

hi -zieg-
This is my recommendation for your consideration
Also have 3 mo. old MBP (17")
Had ,very briefly, same problem: reinstalled Lion... and problem vanished.
Please remember to do backup B4  any major system change. if you choose to do this: I have time capsule. This would be,of course, a solution albeit time consuming....
Let 'er rip and ...
cheers

My new MacBook Pro (with Thunderbolt) regularly doesnt respond when I am using it and I get the horrible rainbow click wheel. it happens alot when using safari, iphoto and itunes. The three programs i use the most. The clickwheel does eventually go away and I can continue to use the laptop but it is really frustrating.
I am fully up to date on the most recent updates so I am wondering if maybe I have a virus?
    Any help would be great!

Likely not a virus, more like bad sectors are to blame.
This is going to be rough, but your machine is going to be fine.
First backup all your files to a external drive.
Get our your installer disk that comes with your Mac, stick it in and reboot holding c
Once in the installer, look for a menu for Disk Utility and launch it.
Select your drive on the left and click Erase, Format HFS+ Journaled with Security option Erase > Zero all data. (don't forget this!)
This will completly wipe all data off your boot drive and Zeroing will check each bit for bad sectors, which the driver software will map off. It will take a hour or so.
Once finished, exit Disk Utility and Install OS X.
Reboot and you got a new machine again, install any programs from fresh sources and your files from backup.
Yes, it sounds drastic, but I had to do it just yesterday with this brand new i7 Quad, as I was getting too much glitchy behavior which nobody else was having.
My 22 years experience has told me to always Zero Erase every new drive, but I ignored it this time just to see, turns out I was right all these years.
I don't know why new drives have these issues, they just make them and slam OS X onto it and ship them out the door, hope problems gets resolved later down the pipeline.
Windows also has this problem, so it's not just Mac's.

  • Macbook pro 2011 efi problems

Hello there, i've had archlinux working on bios mode but due to delays in boot etc i decided to try to switch archlinux to efi.
I had to boot into bios mode since efi gave an error about no controller found but it's something that can be later fixed on mkinitcpio.
I booted into macos, installed refind, rebooted, picked the bios option of archlinux and did the usual stuff installing gruib-efi into /mnt, i mount /dev/sda1 (the efi boot partition of macos) into /mnt/boot , sda4 into /mnt and sda5 into /mnt/home.
Then i did the normal install steps up until the grub part and then i did :
    # modprobe dm-mod
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --boot-directory=/boot/efi/EFI --recheck --debug
It complained about not being able to hook the efi things (i guess due to booting in bios mode), then did the grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Then i set the password and rebooted and nothing shows up on the refind menu, only the vmlinuz if i set it to search for all kernels, but not the grub entry, the kernel one doesn't help me much since it just puts me on a recovery shell right away.
Spent all day yesterday and a big part of today googling all around but still no luck.
    Thanks in advance.
I changed vmlinuz-linux to vmlinuz-linux.efi as well, and it does show up but i get a
ERROR: DEVICE '' not found. Skipping fsck.
ERROR: Unable to find root device''
    and then recovery shell.
But if i go into /dev in the recovery shell i see the sda1 sda2 etc in there, i guess it's because i'm missing some options in the real place to boot directly into kernel mode.
Anyway no matter what there should also be the grub option present no?
Edit: well to make some progress i created the refind_linux.conf and at least is mount the devices.
Problem now is [drm:intel_dsm_platform_mux_info] *ERROR* MUX INFO call failed
time to chroot into the install and install packer and install linux_mainline to see if it helps as i've seen people with it hanging there too and saying that fixed it.
Well i didn't have to do that crazy move, just had to  add a nomodeset entry, tried installing the ati drivers but if i boot normally i still get the same intel error and hangs.
Can i use X etc normally with nomodeset or what can i do here? blacklist the intel module?
    Thanks
Well getting no screens found so guess not, it seems the answer lies within a linux-mainline.
Theres a patched one at https://github.com/fooblahblah/linux-ma … deon-patch , how can i use packer to compile that? or do i need to use abs?
    EDIT:
Well compiled the linux-mainline and linux-mainline-radeon-patch and not much luck, booting hangs on waiting for udev uevents to be processed
Also managed to get grub to work, turns out it should be only /efi/cookies not /efi/efi/cookies
How can i start X with nomodeset?
Ok fixed with linux-mainline, can at least boot with the intel graphics card now, a cooler macbook pro at last!
    Thanks Jeff for the help.

OK, this is not "downgrade", this is new installation into new partition. Downgrade would mean that you started Snow Leopard and it reverts everything from Lion to Snow Leopard leaving intact all (or majority) installed applications, settings etc.

I am having problems with my macbook pro 2011 version. First of my display will not go to sleep, it will stay on screensaver. I told the sreen to go to sleep in 5 mins and i set hot corners to sleep display. When i go to the corner to make the screen go off, it wont. the sleep light on the front of the macbook pro will turn on idicating that its in screen sleep mode and the keyboard lights turn off but the screen wont. The second problem is that when i close the lid to my mackbook pro and it goes to sleep. Then when you open it and it comes out of sleep, you will be using it for 5 secs and then it goes back to sleep and then move the mouse and it comes back on.

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • MacBook Pro 2011: Problems with logging in

When my MacBook is starting and I am trying to login to my account, there's only the aurora background without the dock or anything else. I can move the mouse and it seems that I am already logged in but I can't see my harddrive, dock or even the menubar. The only way to turn it off is to push the on/off button once but I could also restart it or log out. This seems to be normal. I don't need any force quits. I only don't see my harddrive, programs, dock basically everything exept my mouse and the default aurora background.
I rebooted from the system DVD and now it works but I'm afraid of getting this issue again in the future.
If there's anybody out who has the sam issue and solved it, please tell me!
    I am using a MacBook Pro 2011
    Quadcore i7 2,3 GHz
    750 GB Harddrive
    8 GB RAM
    Thanks in advance everybody!

As always maintain a backup or two of your data on a external powered drive(s)
Some do one TimeMachine and one "hold option" Bootable clone using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superdupers.
The OS and programs can be replaced, but the user data is unique and valuable media, can't be.
Drives are cheap, only $120 or so per 1TB. No reason not to backup data.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 won't turn on (RAM issue?)

(Macbook pro 2011) I had water damage so I sent in to apple for a complete makeover and they pretty much replaced everything. The laptop seemed to be working fine but the issue is that when I put my laptop to sleep / turn off it won't turn back on. I haven't had the time to take my laptop back to the apple store due to projects / travelling. I've found that there is one quick fix, manually resetting the ram by taking the RAM chips out for a second then re-inserting them. The other way is to hold Command+Option+P+R 3 times before reboot and that'll work temporarily for a day maybe. I plan on taking it to the apple store in a day or so if the problem doesn't resolve itself. Do you guys have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    Hello
I have a macbook pro 2011 13" that came with OS Lion (integrated not on a disk). I recently bought OS Mountain Lion of the app store and it is working fine. However I was a bit dissapointed in the battery so I decided to try and downgrade and completely failed, I froze the computer and when I restarted it it did not work. I went into recovery system and erased my disk and all that and went to re-download my OS. I was expecting to get the option to re-download Lion but instead I could only re-download Mountain Lion.
My question is since my computer originally came with Lion can I reset my computer so I get OS Lion back instead of OS Mountain Lion?
Thanks for any help. Any answer will be appreciated even if it is saying it is not possible.

    Erase the hard drive:
        1.    Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
        2.    After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
        3.    Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
        4.    Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 charging behaving weird.  Charges and stops repeatedly and takes very long.  Help?

So a few weeks ago my MacBook Pro 2011 started having charging problems.  I would use it normally.  Then plug it in to charge anywhere between 5-20 percent like I've been doing for the past year that I've had it (since August 2011).  Anyway, what happens now is that it charges but extremely slowly - at least 4 hours to fully charge as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours that it used to take.  Also, it seems to be draining a lot quicker than it used to while only browsing the internet.  Furthermore, while charging, the battery meter goes from the percent its charged to to "not charging" back and forth.  What's going on?  Is there a problem with my battery, my computer, or the magsafe charger?  [please refer to the pictures below to get a better understanding of my problem - these pictures were taken over a 2 hour time period - a time period that usually is enough to charge my computer] - if you'll notice, in the first two pictures, the percent barely went up by 10 in a half hour period:

  • Macbook Pro 2011 running very slowly after upgrading to Mavericks

I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.
I have attached the Etrecheck output FYI

Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

  • Is there a compatibility issue with the Current USB 3 external Hard drives and MacBook Pro 2011 (USB 2)?

I am currently having bad hangs with my 13" MacBook Pro (2011) which I book 2012 ad a New external Harddrive (WD My Passport Edge) which was given to me as a gift.
Friends of mine told me there is a compatibility issue between the USB 3 cord and the USB outlet of my MacBook Pro.
Although this shouldnt be the case as the box of the Hard drive I got said it was compatible.
I even downloaded the WD Drive Utilities and sometimes whenthe Harddrive is plugged in the Utilities doean't Open but just bleeps in the Applications Dock.
Before I used the Harddrive I read a lot from the WD Manual and went to their site and downloaded a firmware update so I really don't know what the problem is.
What I am afraid of is that I may lose some files if I place them in the external Harddrive.
Can anyone help me with this or should I be asking for a replacement harddrive?
This is my first experience with an external hard drive as I never used one before.
    Thank you very much.

To be honest, I've had back luck with Western Digital drives and I avoid them at all costs. If I were you, I would return the WD drive and look at externals from OWC or MacMall (LaCie, even G-Tech).
That's just my personal opinion, mind you...

  • Issue with Macbook Pro 2011

Hi there. I have a brand new MacBook Pro 2011 and I'm having some problems with my wireless connection. I have in the same room a Mac Mini, my Ipad , my Ipod, 3 PC's and all of them have a wireless connection. I notice that since my last MacOSX update I have some problems with my wireless connectivity in my Macmini. Now I'm having the same problem in my macbook pro. I have internet in all my other devices but no internet in my Mac Mini or Macbook. The Access point is 5 meters away from my devices. I put some repeater in the middle to repeat the signal but I'm getting the same beavior. Can someone help me on this? If I go to the network setting and renew my DHCP address I can access the internet but after 15 minutes I'm getting the same problem again.

The signal bar on the menubar is not always an accurate indicator of how strong the signal is.  A more accurate measure is if the signal drops entirely and you are definitely in range of the airport base station.  Also anywhere within 3 meters you may get signal degradation because of overlapping radio waves cancelling each other out.  You also have the option to ask to speak to a customer relations person when you call AppleCare, and ask for an expedited repair, and have your airport card properly seated.  Sometimes they can get loose, or the antenna can get loose inside, though normally this isn't a problem unless the machine has to be opened for some reason.
