so what do i do now, where could i get hold of another grey rebook disk or is there any other options open to me,
apple are ringing me wednesday but wouldnt mind getting it sorted ASAP
thanks for any help

The Mac is a Early 2011 that originally came with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and machine specific install disks. (important)
It was later upgraded to a later OS X verison, but that can only be reinstalled by the original purchaser.
You will need to contact Apple and get a new copy of the Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro machine specific OS X 10.6 install disks (the 10.6 white retail disks won't work)
Make sure to buy a jewel cd case to protect the disks bottom from damage. You also can make DVD-R DL copies of the disks.
http://www.brokenhomeboy.co.uk/pierow/blog/2011/10/make-a-bootable-backup-snow-l eopard-install-disc/
Then follow these directions to reinstall, make SURE you erase the ENTIRE drive by selecing the drive makers name and size at the top, this is important to remove the Recovery HD partition and reset the GUID back to something 10.6 can later fix from the install disk if needed.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
I recommned you stick with 10.6.8 on that macine for maximum performance, however if you decide otherwise, make sure to max the RAM (8-16GB) before upgrading to 10.8, it will reinstall the Recovery HD partition again auutomatically.
For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still

  • Macbook pro 2011 problems

I am having problems with my macbook pro 2011 version. First of my display will not go to sleep, it will stay on screensaver. I told the sreen to go to sleep in 5 mins and i set hot corners to sleep display. When i go to the corner to make the screen go off, it wont. the sleep light on the front of the macbook pro will turn on idicating that its in screen sleep mode and the keyboard lights turn off but the screen wont. The second problem is that when i close the lid to my mackbook pro and it goes to sleep. Then when you open it and it comes out of sleep, you will be using it for 5 secs and then it goes back to sleep and then move the mouse and it comes back on.

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • MacBook Pro 2011: Problems with logging in

When my MacBook is starting and I am trying to login to my account, there's only the aurora background without the dock or anything else. I can move the mouse and it seems that I am already logged in but I can't see my harddrive, dock or even the menubar. The only way to turn it off is to push the on/off button once but I could also restart it or log out. This seems to be normal. I don't need any force quits. I only don't see my harddrive, programs, dock basically everything exept my mouse and the default aurora background.
I rebooted from the system DVD and now it works but I'm afraid of getting this issue again in the future.
If there's anybody out who has the sam issue and solved it, please tell me!
    I am using a MacBook Pro 2011
    Quadcore i7 2,3 GHz
    750 GB Harddrive
    8 GB RAM
    Thanks in advance everybody!

As always maintain a backup or two of your data on a external powered drive(s)
Some do one TimeMachine and one "hold option" Bootable clone using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superdupers.
The OS and programs can be replaced, but the user data is unique and valuable media, can't be.
Drives are cheap, only $120 or so per 1TB. No reason not to backup data.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 problem with windows via bootcamp

I have macbook pro early 2011  and my disk drive not working.
I tried to install windows via bootcamp by an external disk drive but it failed to boot from the windows install disk.
    how can i install it?

The Snow Leopard Windows drivers are on your Snow Leopard install disk. There is no download for Windows drivers and Snow Leopard.
You should include your computer model and year in your posts. Answers may vary depending on your hardware.
XP is not supported on newer Apple computers. You should install Windows 7.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Problem

    Hi there,
at the end of 2010, and at the begining of 2011, i bought a MacBook Pro, 17inch screen, 4 GB ram, 750 HDD, i7 procesor. It worked fine, an extraordinary way to use a computer.
A couple of days ago, it startet lagging, allot. When i opened safari it tooked like 30 - 40 secs, if i tryed to open any of my programs the cruisor started loading (rainbow color) for a minute or so. The startup is slow as **** like 3 or 4 minutes or so.
The first thing i did is, i opened the disc manager, and checked and repaired premissions, there were 2 , and it sait that it was repared.
THe next thing i did was safe boot, that didint work, next was the SMC, and PRAM reset, thst slso didint work.
I am here desperate, i dont know what to do, i have to to allot of laboratorie work, in matlab, for my university exams, allot of reports to write, and now my computer kepps going like this.
I dont live in the USA, so i cant go to the genious pult.

Ok, to wrap things up, i gave my macbook to a premium reseller, and it indeed was the HDD.
He said that it is common, for a Macbook, or any type of computer, to break, what happens is the file location gets corrupted, and, you basicly, cant fix, it , all you can do is try to save your data, i didint succed, i hope someone else will.
This will just be a reminder, to BACK UP FILES EVERY WEEK. The important ones ofcourse.
Thanks  to OGELTHORPE and Linc Davis for helping me out.
To conclude, i didint buy another HDD, i bought SSD HD, it is a Hybrid, between HDD, AND SSD, and it costs about 2000 kn, or 345 $. It is allot faster than the HDD, and a little bit slower than the SSD, and it does not have a tendency to break, at least not often as HDD.

What is the part number and model of Firewire adapter?
I have used them in the past without any problems whatsoever.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 won't turn on (RAM issue?)

(Macbook pro 2011) I had water damage so I sent in to apple for a complete makeover and they pretty much replaced everything. The laptop seemed to be working fine but the issue is that when I put my laptop to sleep / turn off it won't turn back on. I haven't had the time to take my laptop back to the apple store due to projects / travelling. I've found that there is one quick fix, manually resetting the ram by taking the RAM chips out for a second then re-inserting them. The other way is to hold Command+Option+P+R 3 times before reboot and that'll work temporarily for a day maybe. I plan on taking it to the apple store in a day or so if the problem doesn't resolve itself. Do you guys have any suggestions?
    Thanks,

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 clamshell mode broken by latest software update?

After installing the latest MacBook Pro software update and EFI update through Software Update in the evening May 4, I am unable to enter clamshell mode any more. It used to work before. After waking up in the clamshell mode, the machine promptly goes back to sleep. On subsequent attempts to wake up the system, the laptop itself appears to wake up (at least the sleep light stops blinking) but the display does not even wake up. I can still work with external dsisplay with the lid open but this is highly annoying. I have reset the PRAM with no effect. The machine is a 2011 MBP, 15" inch, 2.2 GHz quad i7. Keyboard and mouse are wireless Microsoft desktop but the problem is also present with wired peripherals.
Does anyone else see this problem after installing the latest patch?

Okay, I'll add my frustration here as well.
I've had this problem too, and more noticable since the 1.4 update.
I posted a thread similar to this here.
But I'll just copy over what my main problem was...
Whenever I plug my computer into my Cinema Display (with the computer closed) it won't wake up fully. The status light will come on, any external hard drives will spin up, but the display won't turn on and the computer will go back to sleep.
I have to restart the computer manually to get it to work normally, and if I disconnect it while it's between the sleep and wake mode and try to open it, the backlight will come on but the screen will remain black, causing me to have to force restart it.
This is in addition to my first problem with the backlit keyboard not coming on automatically after sleep, which was temporarily fixed by resetting the SMC, but it goes back to the problem after a week or so.
What could be causing either of these problems? Could it have something to do with BootCamp since I have it installed, or is there a defect?
I would bring it back to Apple, but there's a small dent in the front right corner, and I'm afraid they would deny any problem I have.
I took my MacBook Pro (2011, i7 2.2, 17") into the Apple Store on Monday, and after about an hour of attempting to replicate the problem with a different monitor, there was only one time where there was any sort of problem.
The employee told me to see if there will be a fix, or otherwise they will replace the logic board for me.
One thing I'd like to add as a note...
It seems that the problem is more prominent when I have my computer with everything on it as usual. As in, before I took it to the Apple Store I performed a clean install of OS X, and that may be related to how bad the problem is, any opinions?
I had attempted at reinstalling OS X from a Time Machine Backup, but the problems continued shortly after completetion. In addition to this, I clean installed OS X, and manually reloaded my applications and media, hoping that the problem had stemmed from some kind of broken file system that could be repaired by a new install.
But no matter how I do it, the problem comes back despite the method. It is really something I want fixed, as I pretty much only use it in clamshell mode when home...

  • My MacBook Pro 2011 Crashed!

    Hi,
I have MacBook Pro 2011 model. It came with snow leoprod but then I upgraded it to Mountain Lion sometime in 2012. Initially everything was fine but since last 2-3 months, I started noticing that performance was getting back. I checked CPU and Memory usage, and everything seems to be fine. I had to idea why it was getting bad.
Two days ago, my MBP failed to start. I used 'option' command during startup to run disk utilities and did check for disk problems including permissions. Though disk repair did not return any errors, the verify disk permissions was taking foreever to finish. I left it overnight but it still did not finish. Thats when I thought something was wrong with disk permissions.
I then used the recover option to reinstall Mountain Lion OS. The download was via internet. It downloaded successfully but then when it tries to reinstall OS, it gets stuck. I left it for 5-6 hours but installation never finishes. The remaining time to install shows some ridiculous number like -6,5678 minutes remaining. So did hard reboot by pressing power button to restart and run disk diagnostics. I again ran all checks and everything showed find. SMART status shows Verified. No disk errors or permissions at all.
I have no idea what is going on. Can somebody please help me? I basically want to do this:
    1) I have to retrieve few documents from the harddisk and copy it to my external disk. Can you please let me know if this is possible?
    2) If I can achieve # 1, then try to do a clean install of OS. Since I was not supplied any DVDs with OS, I am not very sure how to clean install Mountain Lion on my laptop.
BTW, I don't have any other Mac products. If I have do anything like USB bootable disk, then I have to do it on my Windows Vista laptop.
My MacBook Pro is with following configuration:
    1) CPU i7
    2) Memory 4 GB
    3) HDD 500 GB
    Please help me!
    Regards,

    Hello
I have a macbook pro 2011 13" that came with OS Lion (integrated not on a disk). I recently bought OS Mountain Lion of the app store and it is working fine. However I was a bit dissapointed in the battery so I decided to try and downgrade and completely failed, I froze the computer and when I restarted it it did not work. I went into recovery system and erased my disk and all that and went to re-download my OS. I was expecting to get the option to re-download Lion but instead I could only re-download Mountain Lion.
My question is since my computer originally came with Lion can I reset my computer so I get OS Lion back instead of OS Mountain Lion?
Thanks for any help. Any answer will be appreciated even if it is saying it is not possible.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
        1.    Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
        2.    After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
        3.    Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
        4.    Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Kappy, a pretty wonderful and very knowledgeable man, has tip for that which I have copied and pasted above

  • Macbook Pro 2011 charging behaving weird.  Charges and stops repeatedly and takes very long.  Help?

So a few weeks ago my MacBook Pro 2011 started having charging problems.  I would use it normally.  Then plug it in to charge anywhere between 5-20 percent like I've been doing for the past year that I've had it (since August 2011).  Anyway, what happens now is that it charges but extremely slowly - at least 4 hours to fully charge as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours that it used to take.  Also, it seems to be draining a lot quicker than it used to while only browsing the internet.  Furthermore, while charging, the battery meter goes from the percent its charged to to "not charging" back and forth.  What's going on?  Is there a problem with my battery, my computer, or the magsafe charger?  [please refer to the pictures below to get a better understanding of my problem - these pictures were taken over a 2 hour time period - a time period that usually is enough to charge my computer] - if you'll notice, in the first two pictures, the percent barely went up by 10 in a half hour period:

  • Macbook Pro 2011 running very slowly after upgrading to Mavericks

I am in deep trouble with my wife so any help would be gratefully accepted.
Shortly after Mavericks became available I upgraded my wife's Macbook Pro 2011 to use the new OS version. Ever since then, the Macbook has been running noticeably slowly. In particular, Mail is almost unusuable taking minutes to open and showing long delays while moving around messages, folders, etc. Excel and Word are also much slower, Safari is slow, in fact just about everything is grinding.
Any ideas on what can I can do to improve things and apease my unhappy wife would be much appreciated.
I have attached the Etrecheck output FYI

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
