Macbook pro 13" and external monitor question

Hi,
I got a mbp 13" 2010
I would like to buy a  HP 2510i monitor http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02076507 &lang=en&cc=us&taskId=115&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=3757979&prodTypeId =382087
Today I brought my macbook to a computer store and connected it to a samsung monitor 27" using mini-display to hdmi cable.
When i mirrored the screens I got two black areas on the left and right. basically it wanst fullscreen. (macbook res is 1280x800, so I think I got the same resolution on the external monitor)
But when I disable the mirror option Its all good and supports 1080p resolution.
How can I get fullscreen(1080p) even when I am mirroring the screen? will this hp monitor be able to do this?
thanx

You can change your screen resolution by going to system preferences and displays from there you can select the bes resolution. However you will never get is perfect as the ratio is different from your ho screen to your mac. You could either go without mirroring (what I do with my cinema display) or plug it into your screen and then shut your mac lid so the dock moves onto the ho screen and it becomes your only display. You would however need an external mouse and keyboard to control this.

  • MacBook Pro Displayport and External Monitor

My early 2011 MacBook Pro is connected to a Dell U2412M monitor via a minidisplaport to displayport cable.
If I disconnect the MacBookPro from the power cable (run on battery power alone), the monitor loses power. The monitor is plugged in to the same power strip. Unplugging the monitor's power cable causes the monitor to lose power as well. The monitor's USB ports do not appear to work in either scenario.
Is this expected behavior with this setup or do I need to consider an alternative means to connect the MacBook Pro to the monitor? I'd like to use the monitor's USB ports, but my primary goal is to not have to have the monitor and MacBook Pro connected to a power strip in order to have the monitor display work.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, min Displayport supports audio and video for the 2011 MBP 13" via HDMI.

  • Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

  • Problems connecting my MacBook Pro to an external monitor

For the past 2 years, I have regularly connected my MacBook Pro to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a VGA cable. When I do so, the picture  automatically comes up in the maximum resolution of the external monitor (1920 x 1080). However, just in the past few weeks, the picture on my external monitor automatically comes up in 1600 x 1200 instead.  When I click on the display menu in the upper right corner of my screen, there isn't even an option for 1920 x 1080 anymore.  I've tried restarting my computer and even unplugging and replugging in the cable, but nothing seems to fix the problem. However, on at least some occasions, the problem seems to fix itself after about a day or so of use, and the picture reverts back to 1920 x 1080. I should note a couple of things: when I connect another MacBook to my monitor, the display automatically comes up in 1920 x 1080. And when I connect my Macbook to a different display, I have the same problem as I have with my display. So I think the issue is definitely with my computer, not my monitor. Does anyone have a suggestion about how to solve this problem? Or, when the problem arises, is there anything I can do to reset the display to 1920 x 1080 other than waiting for the problem to fix itself? Any suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated!

    Hi bonfig,
If you are having issues with the external display settings on your MacBook Pro, it may be worth going throught the following article, in particular the portion about resetting the SMC and PRAM:

  • Can I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • MacBook Pro to my external monitor

How do I hook up my MacBook Pro to my external monitor if I don't have an HDMI connection or a DVI connection port on my laptop?

Of course! some of the adapters can be purchased at best buy but are usually kind of expensive. I saw an HDMI adapter at Home Depot the other day for $7 which is a good deal.
Although, im not even sure if youre in the U.S., so this information be irrelevant to you anyway haha.

Thanks for your help What about a HDMI to VGA cable? Would this work?
Where would you find one of those? Never heard of that. That is not to say they don't exist. Why would you want to try that? That would mean you are taking a digital signal, converting it to analog, then converting it back to digital.
Stick with the common methods as I described. Tell us if your monitor has HDMI or DVI inputs and I can be more specific as to what cable to use.

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

  • Can i attach my macbook pro to 2 external monitors using a mini displayport to HDMI connector and then an HDMI to dual DVI connector?

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem

I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
    Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3

I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
    No ideas anyone??

  • HT2494 Reboot my Macbook Pro when using external monitor w Thunderbolt to VGA adapter

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.9.2 OS X (MacBookPro8,1). I never had any problem w that but yesterday i bought an external monitor (kind of old model from LG - L1900E). Well, i was trying to extend my Macbook Pro display through a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter. It worked at first but it started rebooting my Mac. I just disconnected that and the reboot stopped.
It sounds to me like a Software related BUG regarding connection or something strange.....
I would like to have some help on how to proceed w that ? Is there a specific SW i need to install to use that ?
I am kind of disapointed because i heard that one of the major items the new OS X was about external displays.....
Looking forward a help from an apple specialist, Tks !

  • Sound Issues with macbook pro 13" and external display

Hey guys I have a 13" macbook pro from mid 2012 with 8 gb ram and the i7 processor. About a year ago I bought a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter and hdmi cable to use my 32 in tv as a monitor. It worked flawlessly and I never experienced the flickering issue people have been talking about. The tv is only 720p so the picture wasn't as clear as it should be. I was also tired of using a pullout desk and thought the 32 in was a little too big so a couple weeks ago I added an entire desk setup in the corner and bought a brand new 24 in Vizio E241i--a1 and mounted it on the wall as a monitor. This tv is the full 1080p. Ever since then, I have had trouble with the sound playing from the macbook>displayport-hdmi adapter>hdmi cable>monitor. I select the monitor as the output device and sometimes it will actually play and sometimes it will not. I mostly use the macbook in clamshell mode when at my desk but sometimes I have both screens on. No matter what if the sound has stopped working it will not go back. If I select the macbook speakers as the output then it will play through the macbook speakers. But once I switch back to the hdmi output for sound it still will not work. The only thing I can do to fix it is to leave the macbook in clamshell mode and then restart it causing the monitor to be the main display at boot up. Once I got the new tv, I also started experiencing the flickering issue people have been talking about with the external monitor. I know it is not because of Mountain Lion because I had Mountain Lion when I used my old setup and never experienced either of these problems. Any ideas on what could be going on? Thanks in advance

Did you format the external drive for use with OS X?
Open Disk Utility. Does Disk utility see the connected drive?
Format it to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • Connect my macbook pro to 2 external monitors

I want to connect my macbook pro up to 2 external monitors.  Anyway to do this?

Yes the power cable from the monitor 1( apple thdb) goes into the laptop and the monitor 1 (apple) to the Lacie and then a short HDMI /Thuderbolt to the Monitor 2 and the lacie and it powered up ok .
I had  tried earlier to daisy to Monitor 2 (acer) off the Monitor 1 apple but that did not work and was surprised when it worked off the Lacie.
The only issue is that I try and switch off Monitor 2 first and properly eject the lacie before powereing off the laptop if that makes sense but there is an apple script to do this which I am going to try

  • MacBook Pro freezing with external monitor?

I recently got an external monitor to use with my MBP (early 09). So it seems that if I have my monitor hooked up (and maybe also when my power cable is plugged in) and my computer goes into sleep mode, the whole thing freezes and i have to hard restart my MBP. Is there a reason it is doing this? Also, if i close my MBP, instead of the computer going to sleep, it makes it go into mirror display mode and keeps it running on my external monitor (and sometimes it doesnt even go into sleep mode...). i found this thread - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3190417?start=165&tstart=0 and it say to use the line:
    "sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0""
in the terminal to make lion/ML work like SL, but any clue what else that will change?

    Hi sgibson,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with the external display on your MacBook Pro. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature or scope of the issue you are describing. Are you using the display in extended desktop or mirroring mode? If you are using it in extended desktop mode, is the issue limited to the external display, or does it also freeze the primary display as well? Does the same thing happen if the display is directly connected to the MacBook Pro (i.e. without the dock)? If you continue having issues, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful in isolating the cause:
