Macbook pro 13" cpu 320%

i dont know what happened to my mac but now everytime i turn it on the fan starts to run too fast and the cpu goes over 320%, first i was able to work with it but everything was super slow, now i cant do anything i just can go on the recover menu and try to repair the hdd but i cant , i dont want to lose my data
help please

Well, I talked to Apple support and tried to find out whether my observed temperature ranges vs CPU load were normal. Surprisingly, they told me that they haven't got any publicly available information on this phenomenon.
I have also inserted a plot of temperature rise vs CPU load here.
So it sounded like Apple does not want to come transparent about this issue with their customers. They only advised me to contact the nearest service center and see what is their opinion. Now in the absence of any precise and standard information about temperature ranges, I don't know what would be the basis of opinion from service center.
@pixelized - I suppose i7 overheating is increasingly discussed. But mine is i5. I guess the temperature rise vs CPU load should be different between the two processors. I have never observed temperatures like 120 C, even after 10 mins of 100% CPU load on both cores or by watching videos. Ambient room temperature was 18C in my case.
If anyone has obtained observations of temperature rise on i5, I would appreciate if you share them here.

How i can fix this problem?
Note that: this summer I have changed my logic board to a new one and since then i never had any problem. The only this is that i'm having a warning for service battery which i think is not the issue.

Remove those kernel extensions and test again. They are not part of Mac OS X, you added them.
If you do not know how to remove them, contact the manufacturer.
If you still cannot figure it out, visit the genius bar (FREE with appointment).
    They will:
make sure you have adequate Backups (which is two copies for this exercise).
erase your hard drive (which deletes everything and has no way to get it back, hence the two Backups).
Re-Install Mac OS X from original sources.
    Restore your user files.
If that stops the panics, the problem was in the extensions you added.

  • 2007 Macbook Pro having CPU problems

My macbook pro has been acting weird recently. It's been running slower, and things have been happening like...
When i watch Youtube videos sometimes, when i try to fullscreen the video, the computer takes a long time to do it sometimes and other times the computer will log out completely.
I'm a musician, and I'm trying to use Pro Tools, but even with everything closed and only one instrument open on Pro Tools, i'll get CPU overload error messages.
I have 2GB of RAM which should be enough to run Pro Tools decently.
I have 18 GB of space free on my hard drive.
I downloaded SMART Utility and it said my hard drive is fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    TJ

I suspect your CPU is fine however you need to increase your HD storage. Mac's need a minimum of 10-15% of the HD available at all times to run well. For example if you had a 250GB HD you would need a minimum of 25-37.5GB available. What tends to take up lots of space is media (music, video & photographs) if you off load these onto an external HD that will help.
Also 2GB of RAM is a very minimal amount. Run your computer normally then open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor), then click the *System Memory* tab. If your computer has around 500MB or less FREE RAM then you need a RAM upgrade too. In short this would mean your system is starved for RAM.
Finally you may have unwanted or unnecessary apps opening at login. To check and remove open System Preferences - Accounts - Highlight your account - Login Items - then select the apps you want to remove from login and click the - symbol at the bottom of the box.

  • MacBook Pro System CPU Spikes When Unplugged

Upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago and, whenever I unplug my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011 - 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 - 16GB RAM 1333MHz) and run just on the battery, my system CPU usage goes through the roof which results in my Mac running/responding very slowly and buggy.
However, looking at the iStat widget on my dashboard, it's reporting that my CPU isn't running hot nor does my MacBook Pro feel hot at all. It's also showing that I still have 10GB of RAM free.
As expected, once my magsafe is reattached to my laptop and plugged back in, the system CPU returns to a normal level. In Activity Monitor, it shows kernel_task as being the culprit.
I queried the log as suggested by Linc and TextEdit had something for me:
    Dec 10 15:51:31 My-MBP kernel[0] <Debug>: Process Setup Assistant [307] disabling system-wide I/O Throttling
Anyone have any idea what this could be? Seems like it should be a simple software config but I just don't know.
Additionally, I also ran EtreCheck. These are the results when it's running unplugged:

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening or are experiencing anything similar? I can't for the life of me figure out if it's a Mavericks issue or if it's a hardware issue.  Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

You're not going to believe this but I just now found a working solution!!!
Thanks to the talents of a man named, Rhys Oxenhams, and his flawless tutorial, eveything's running normally now!
BEFORE READING ON...make sure you backup all of you data!  I take no responsibility for anything bad that happens to your machine.  I'm providing this information because it worked for me. There's no guarantee it will work on your system.  TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS BEFORE READING ON and BACKUP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATELY.
Here's what you need to do:
    1. In the Finder menu bar, click on Go and select Computer. 2. In the window that comes up, double-click your computer's HD. For me, it's Macintosh HD. 3. From there, click on System > Library > Extensions. 4. Now look for a file called IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext. 5. Right-click on IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext and choose Show Package Contents. 6. In that new window that comes up, click on Contents > Plugins and locate ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext. 7. Just like in step 5, right-click on ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin.kext and choose Show Package Contents. 8. Just like in step 6, in that new window that comes up, click on Contents > Resources and locate your Model Identifer.
         • In case you don't know what your Model ID is, click on the  in the top left of the screen and choose About This Mac     • In the window that comes up, click on More Info...     • In the next window that comes up, click on System Report     • In the very first screen, towards the top, locate the entry Model Identifier          - Write this info down on a piece of paper. You will need it. In my case, I wrote down MacBookPro8,1 9. Back in the Resources folder, locate the .plist file that has your model identifier. In my case, it was MacBookPro8,1.plist 10. You're not going to delete that file but instead move it to a differnt folder inside your home folder--doesn't matter which folder, just put it somewhere inside your home folder. 11. Restart your machine and you are good to go!
Let me know how it turns out for you.  REMINDER: Backup your data before doing this!

  • Is a MacBook Pro 2010 with 320 Gb big?

Please help, I'm looking for a MacBook Pro for less money than the newest version. I was just wondering if 320 Gb on a MacBook Pro was small, or large.
    Thank you!

320 GB hard drive? Depends on what you will be using the machine for? Also, I suggest you check eBay or the Apple Store (store.apple.com) for deals on Refurb units. You can get a lot more for your money and the machines are in decent shape.

  • Macbook Pro Retina CPU Overheating when doing simple tasks?

I've had my Macbook Pro w/ Retina since July 2012 and for about a month now (starting in November) the CPU Die - Digital has been getting EXTREMELY overheated. It has gotten up to 210 degrees F which is way past the damaging level of CPU but the real kicker is that it happens when I have a few tabs open in safari and a couple other minor programs open (Mail, Finder, App Store, Skype, iTunes). It's not like I'm running Skyrim, LoL, and Starcraft while running background tasks in Fincal Cut X and Motion V?? I mean I have 16GB of ram and only 5 or 6 of it is in use so it's not a problem with multitasking and processing power also shouldn't pose much of a threat for a few tabs in a browser and some low usage programs. I use iStat Menu's and I took a screenshot just now of it in the 180's when it was recently in the 190's. I also checked the disk utility and I can't see anything in the CPU usage that would make it work that hard.
My questions are am I doing something wrong? Is there something I'm missing? Is my laptop defective and in need of refurbishing using Apple Care? Is this happening to anyone else?
    Thank you in advance.

Turn off Skype and see if that has any affect.  Skype is is a notorious heat generator.
    Did you check Activity Monitor?
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro 13" CPU A Diode temperature

    Hi all,
I have recentlypurchased MBP13 inches (Intel Core i5 2.4 ghz, 500 G HDD, Internationalkb). I observed a difference in CPU heating behaviour compared to mypreviously used MBP 15" (2008 version).
So I did the following test:
    1. CPU Temperature after 10 minutes idle (no activity except hardware monitor; user load 1-3% as measured by istat pro) :
    observations:
    CPU A temp diode: 42 degree C.
    CPU core 1: 40 deg C
    CPU core 2: 41 deg C
    CPU core 3: 40 deg C
    CPU core 4: 41 deg C
    2. CPU temperature after 10 minutes of constant intense CPU activity ( 100% CPU load) given on both cores of the CPU
(by typing command in two terminal windows: yes > /dev/null)
    CPU A temp diode : 93 degree C.
    CPU core 1: 99 deg C
    CPU core 2: 99 deg C
    CPU core 3: 95 deg C
    CPU core 4: 98 deg C
    I have got two questions:
    1. Is this a normal behaviour of i5 CPU heating ?
    2. Why does the hardware monitor show 4 cores of CPU when in fact Intel i5 is a dual core processor ?
    Thanks

  • Mid-2009 macbook pro high cpu temp ( 100C) after every cold boot

    Hi everyone,
Every time I cold-boot my MBP, the CPU temperature sky rockets to 100C within 3 minutes at idle with the fans barely kicking in until that point. The activity monitor shows 97% idle with no major processes running and this issue is reproducible every time I turn on the computer. However, if I immediately reboot the computer (warm boot), the computer runs normally (~70C CPU temp, fans @ 2000 rpm). If I do a SMC reset, the computer boots normally for the next immediate single cold boot but symptoms return thereafter. The only way to prevent the high CPU temperatures is to do a SMC reset before ever cold boot.
I'm wondering if someone else has had these symptoms with their laptop and how they fixed it. The system is still under apple care and the symptoms are reproducible but I'd rather not bring it in as this is my daily-use machine.

but bootcamp ( budeled with mac)  not working     how can i get driver for windows 8
    <Email Edited By Host>

There are no drivers for Windows 8. Windows 8 has not been released yet. It is a pre-release preview that will likely change prior to final release. Who is going to take the time and effort to write drivers for a product that will likely change soon?
That said, go to the Boot Camp forums https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp and search for Windows 8. There are several posts regarding successful installations using Boot Camp Assistant.

  • My Early 2015 MacBook Pro fans are at 0 RPM and my cpu temperature never fluctuates

Hello all I have had a Mid 2009 macbook pro for 5 years now and just got my Early 2015 MacBook Pro.  On my old macbook i used iStat and SMC fan controller religiously and everything worked great.
Now with my new Early 2015 MacBook Pro, My CPU sensor doesn't even show up in iStat, and in my top toolbar, SMC controller shows my CPU temp never moves, and my fans are at 0 RPM. I cannot hear any fans moving at all when in a completely silent room, and my ear is to the computer.
I downloaded a game to stress the CPU to see if it'd change, and it doesn't all the way up to the fans just coming on at 6000RPM and the CPU is very high like 80-90C
I have already reset my PRAM and SMC and was wondering if anyone here has been monitoring their temps and have seen the same thing?
    Thanks

I also have an Early 2015 rMBP w/ i5-5287U cpu.  I am using Temperature Gauge from the Mac App Store and getting similar if not slightly worse results.  I'm usually Idling somewhere between 45 and 60 C with almost no activity.  When I run games, forget about it (see below), temps up to 103 Celsius.  I also experience almost no fans until at least 70 C, and then during gaming the heat is not coming down.
Given that the cpu is supposed to shut itself down at around 105 C, I'm thinking that the programs are not decoding the temperature sensors correctly.  This is my first Mac so it's hard for me to compare performance.  I expected better heat regulation.  I was trying to avoid programs outside of the mac store for this type of thing, but I'm considering OGELTHORPE's suggestion for istat menus, as they do claim to support early 2015 MacBooks.  Have you tried this program yet?

  • Memory on Macbook Pro keeps decreasing like crazy!

Okay, Ever since I installed OS X Mavericks onto my Macbook Pro (Early 2011, 320 gb if that helps anyone?) , I've started to notice a big decrease in my hard drive space, even when I'm not downloading anything? I've even moved a couple of movies to my external hard drive and then had them deleted from my mac and the memory decreased even more!
But the strange thing is, I turned off my macbook and then turned it back on to see if something would happen (before I turned it off, I had near 143 gb of free space). After I turned it on I checked the amount of memory to see if it had changed, and it went to 155 gb of free space. BUT-- I checked again about 15 minutes later after checking some emails and it went down to 151!
Can anyone PLEASE help me with this?!

Your title says Memory, but your description refers to your HD storage space.   The two are different..
" and it went to 155 gb of free space. BUT-- I checked again about 15 minutes later after checking some emails and it went down to 151!"
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    As for Memory / RAM
Mavericks is designed to use RAM differently for good reason. Normal
    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/06/12/compressed-memory-in-os-x-109-maverick s-aims-to-free-ram-extend-battery-life
Mavericks uses RAM much more efficiently than any other previous version of OS X. Mavericks now has a memory compression feature that will compress the memory occupied by applications that aren't being actively used and give the freed up RAM to the application that needs it the most.

PROBLEMS WITH MY UNIBODY MACBOOK PRO
GPU/CPU Problems? Logic Board bad? I'm not sure what the issue is. Please Help!
    Hi, I have an:
    ·   Early 2009
    ·   17 inch
    ·   Unibody Macbook Pro (UMBP) (5,2)
    ·   Intel Core2Duo 2.66GHz
    ·   Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT 512MB graphics (kept on Performance mode – not power saver – because it usually sits on my desk plugged into AC wall-wart 85watt mag-safe power like an iMac), (Nvidia GeForce 9400M onboard too)
    ·   I have an external 27” monitor connected and mirrored - with the internal screen off (brightness is all the way down – thus running cooler)
    ·   (Note: all the problems existed before any/all my upgrades – including the external monitor.)
    ·   I have upgraded to 8Gb’s of 1066 DDR2 RAM
    ·   500Gb Seagate Hybrid HDD
    ·   The UMBP is Running the latest OS 10.8.4 (with automatic updates) – and it had the list of problems (below) with OS Leopard, and Snow Leopard too!
    1)  It will not play *Netflix streaming*, or  youtube or any other internet video without stuttering, stopping, and hesitating in video and audio!! I have CHARTER Cable Internet which runs between 20-50Mb’s :-) This is NOT slow internet.
And with my Windows 7 (64bit Intel QuadCore) Desktop PC using the exact same wifi internet connection there’s *No stuttering*, no stopping, no hesitation in video OR audio! It’s an older Gateway desktop with a tiny USB wifi dongle. And the desktop runs *on-board* Graphics – no graphics card in the machine...at least not until I upgrade the power supply – then I can install one. ;-)
    2)  System Information crashes - “Quits Unexpectedly”. SOooooo frustrating! I can’t even get the current specs so you guys know what we’re dealing with. So I looked them up in a file I have kept since I did all my research online to buy this UMBP. So, I copied all the data that was just now sent to Apple (not that anything will be done with it – they don’t care – my Mac is out of warranty). This app crashing has happened *numerous* times in the past couple years and I just didn’t know what to do about all these problems (the list continues below) because it’s been out of warranty since before I bought it used on eBay.
    3)  I canNOT get Adobe Reader to run on my UMBP - it crashes within seconds! I finally uninstalled it and re-downloaded it and then reinstalled it – still same problem. So, I waited a few months and then re-downloaded it and re-installed it again – still same issue. And I know that Reader had been updated more than once in that time.
I think that the following is unrelated but I figure I should put in all the information I can. The battery never says 100% (it’s always between 97-99% full. When I first got the UMBP it kept telling me to get a new battery (for $250!) And the seller sent the UMBP with a 65 watt (not 85 watt) mag-safe power supply…which I didn’t even realize until months later (hey, this was my first and still is my only Mac, so ya gotta give me some grace here. I hate(d) Microslave *so much* after living with WinVista for 2 years that I HAD to get a Mac..and I don’t ever want to go back! ;-) The only reason I even have a Windows box is because a friend of mine (who was borrowing my then spare beat up old car for like 3 months) gave me one when he got it as partial payment for a job he did on a small business network (yeah, he’s even more geek than me!)
At first I was thinking that it was the NVidia GPUs, but now I’m beginning to think that all three: the CPU and both GPUs are in need of re-soldering to the Logic Board. It seems that I’m not the only one online that agrees that the system cooling fans are subpar in UMBP’s (lots of complaints about burned fingers, etc.)  – so, I run a small 6 inch fan (on high) across the top of the keyboard 24/7 so that it won’t completely fry! (Well, at night when I put my UMBP to sleep I usually turn off the fan…but anyway.) It doesn’t wake up at night to do any background downloads or Time Machine (USB ext drive) work – it would most likely wake me up if it did (I’m a very light sleeper). The fan does a good job at keeping the surface (aluminum) “warm” (as opposed to HOT) so that IF I were to use the built-in keyboard I wouldn’t burn my fingers (like I used to – until I bought an external Bluetooth Apple keyboard – those keyboards are so nice!).
So, yeah, I could send it to someone on eBay (along with $200) who will reflow or reball the chips to the Logic Board, but that seems to be a band aid on a situation that is quite likely to happen again…right?
As I see it: Apple didn’t put enough cooling into the system – the fans are too slow/small – and thus I have a serious problem with the Logic Board.
And I was just on eBay looking at Logic Boards and they cost at least as much as most of the UMBP’s like mine. So that would be way too expensive – I might as well just buy another UMBP like mine – but that’s not going to happen.
The closest Apple store is 2.5 hours drive away from where I live. And the closest authorized apple repair shop is 1.5 hours away and it’s not likely that they will run system tests for free…and the Best Buy here in town is not authorized to work on Macs – they didn’t show up in the search results at locate.apple.com/service/….
    So, what can/should I do??
I didn’t write all this just to “vent” – I really need this fixed!
    ONE SMALL ADDITION:
IF ANYONE suggests that I do the following:
    > System Preferences > Energy Saver > Graphics: Better battery life
(Previously it was set to "Higher performance")
Then I will…do something (hmmm it’s the internet, what can I do??)…for their IDIOCY!!!
Doing that *is doing this*: Paying $3,000 for a Macbook (NOT Pro!!)
I mean think about it for one second: the specs on the Macbook is the cheaper/slower Graphics Chip (GPU) and buying a Macbook costs THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS LESS than a MBP! Right?
IF Apple suggested doing that then that is just Apple’s lame-a$$ way of trying to get away from the fact that they underpowered/under-designed the cooling system (fans et al).
That’s the same answer I got from HP when my notebook overheated to the point of dying!!! HELLO?!?!?
Get it? ALL these notebook manufacturers’ designers and engineers are all using the same data/designs! Yet, I’m paying TWICE THE PRICE for an Apple product (expecting a cool running notebook) vs. a custom-built HP 17” notebook PC that I bought brand new a few years ago (with Vista – ARGH!)! One which would run simultaneous DUAL EXTERNAL monitors at 1080p! That GPU kicked butt! AND it had DUAL SATA2 INTERNAL Hard Disk Drives (with the internal DVD burner)! And this was made in 2009 people!
I thought Apple cared more! Especially at this price!
Maybe you DON’T “get what you pay for” anymore…?

  • MacBook Pro compatibility with old Cinema display

This subject has come up in other posts, but I didn't find my problem. We've just purchased a new 15in MacBook Pro 240/4/320, OS 10.6.4. I want to connect it to a circa 1999, 22" Apple Cinema Display, M5662. This has two connectors, a USB and DVI. I have the DVI adapter to Mini Display port. Nothing shows up at all on the Cinema display with this connected. The display works just fine with an older MacBookPro 1,1 (Intel Core Duo) running on OS X 10.5.8; this hook-up has a direct DVI plug. Apple support thinks its an incapability problem and doesn't really offer any else...they don't support them anymore. Any suggestions?

    Hi Larry!
I know it seems like a silly question, but I believe these older displays had a fancy protocol in the DVI cable that allowed them to power-on automatically when you turned the computer on. This may not be supported through the adaptor. Have you tried touching the small power button area on the front right corner of the display bezel?

  • Replaced Hard Drive in MacBook Pro - now TC wants to back up whole drive

I replaced the 120 Gig hard drive in my MacBook Pro with a 320 Gig drive and cloned the old drive back to the new one. Time Machine now wants to treat this as a different drive from the one I have backed up on my Time Capsule. How do I convince TM to backup the new drive incrementally to the old image on the TC rather than creating a whole new back up?

The cloning software you used probably does not copy the journaling entries. Since TM relies on the event-driven journaling entries, it has no choice but to start a new full backup all over again.

  • Getting "Your Startup disk is almost full" on 1st use of new Macbook Pro

This is a brand new 13" Macbook Pro with a 320 GB drive and 2 GB Ram.
As a test of the new machine, I just captured video from a video camera into iMovie - the uploaded file used 19 GB - I did a couple other tests that created files of just under 2GB each, and went to export the 19GB file, which would have used another 19 GB, when I got the "... almost full" message. Finder reported I had around 50GB free from the original 320 GB drive, which didn't make any sense - considering all my activities today should have taken up around 50 GB of space.
I loaded WhatSize on the machine, and proceeded to find out what's going on, and "WhatSize" reported I have 250 GB free (more like what I'd expect). I checked the Finder, and it now says 250 GB free - I know Apple has been having other issues with the 500 GB and 320 GB drives - has anyone seen the problem I'm having??

Yeah, it's big, but given the size of what you were dealing with, it's not astronomical. It could have been invisible (especially given that it was temporary), so it would not show up in finder... or it could have been erased before you started hunting it down.
