MacBook Pro 13" i7 2011 Freezing when I'm not using it.

I've got the 2011 MacBook Pro 13" i7 with 256GB SSD. It runs really2x fast and am very pleased with it. However, It has a weird issue... It totally freezes when I'm not using it sometimes. It's happened three times now and every time it freezes it would be when i left it for a while like seconds to 5 mins and when i get back it's already frozen. Note, it didn't freeze from coming from screensaver or sleep. How I left the screen is what I see when I get back. I can't move the cursor, the keys don't respond, when I close the lid it doesn't sleep. I'd have to press and hold the power button to force shut it down and boot up again.
I've already contacted Apple Support the second time it happened. The tech was friendly and we did some reseting of PRAM and stuff. I just put up iStat on my menubar to see if anything weird would show there if it ever freezes again after now the third time it happened!
Please help! This is annoying.
My specs:
Mac OS X 10.6.7
MacBook Pro 13" i7 20011
2.7 GHz, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD.

Thanks,
The sad thing is where I am, I don't think there are Apple replacements here yet. I had my mac bought in the US and brought by relatives all the way to the southern part of the Philippines.
It's just weird. I would understand more if my mac froze under a heavy task which so far it hasn't. I have run TWO Windows 7 instances: one Boot Camp, the other virtual, had a whole lot of applications running and while Even playing Star Craft 2! And it run so smoothly I was so impressed. It just so happens to hang when I leave it there doing nothing! ??

since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

  • My MacBook Pro 15" i7 2011 freezes suddenly minutes after starting up.

My MacBook Pro 15" i7 2011 freezes suddenly minutes after starting up the computer.
Sometimes it beeps after freezing, and keeps beeping forever until I shut down the computer by pressing the power button.
Other times the screen gets a little darker and a text appears saying I need to turn off the computer by pressing the power button and restart, but after restarting the computer freezes again. Each time I turn it on it takes only a few minutes to freeze it seams, about 2-3 minutes or less, and occasionaly it doesn´t even start up.
I don´t recall the exact version of the operating system, its MacOSX (10.6 or something)
    Any sollutions?

Three beeps is usually indicative of a RAM problem.  Take out one RAM chip and see what happens and then swap with the other one.  See if there is a difference.  Also engage the Apple hardware test and see if that offers any useful information.
    Ciao.

What version of OS X are you using? If Yosemite, you need to update to 10.10.1 or higher.
In any case, start by going to the editor preferences>general, clicking this button and restarting the editor:

Because your MBP does not require it.

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep

  • MacBook Pro 15 inch 2011- Blue tint in Windows 7 using Bootcamp 4.0

I have recently installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp on my Macbook pro 15 inch 2011. The display under Mac OSX is accurate with vibrant colors using the default Color LCD profile. In WIndows 7, everything is tinted blue and all colors are dimished because of this. I have tried importing my Color LCD icc profile from Mac OSX Lion and this has helped to some degree. This alleviates the blue tint but gives Windows a warmer, browner tint. Unfortunately this makes the display too dim and crushes the blacks. Additionally, some games revert to the default windows calibration with the blue tint. Games look bad either way as the Color LCD profile in Windows makes the game too dark and the default calibration makes everything blue. Has anyone been able to correct this in Bootcamp? Thanks

msconfig / chkdsk / Windows 7 DVD system repair or rollback restore point
Ccleaner 3.09 - remove temp files and caches / also run Registry section
Start: Run %TEMP% (select all) and remove all the contents in there
Heat, fans, poor Apple drivers, I would not blame ATI but I would upgrade/install those.
And yes BC 4.0 probably was not tested fully.

  • MacBook Pro with retina display freezes when streaming from Vudu

I don't know if anyone has experienced this before. I have been trying to watch Non-Stop on Vudu tonight with a lot of issues. After streaming for a while, perhaps some 15-20 minutes or so, the video starts buffering non-stop (ha!). The problem is that once that happens, I cannot click on anything. The buffering doesn't stop, but even if I try to quit Safari, the thing freezes Safari and freezes the entire computer. I have been working with Apple for the past 2 hours and nothing that has been done seems to fix the problem. I even ran a diagnostic and it said that I had no issues.
This is the first time I have streamed from Vudu. I never had issues streaming from anywhere else. I am running a Netflix video in the background to see if it will freeze. Since it's not a full screen, I don't know if it will do the same. Nothing else seems to cause a problem, but what is bizarre is that it freezes the entire computer. In the case that the website was messing everything up, I don't know why it has to freeze the entire computer.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so did you get to a solution and how?
    Thanks!

I had this exact problem when watching streams on my Macbook pro retina 15". For the sake of testing, I tried opening the same stream i was testing in chrome, using 120 % of cpu, in safari, where it uses roughly 3-10 %. dont't know if this will solve your problem, but I advice trying it.

  • Macbook pro is slowing or freezing when using fcp x

I am having a nightmare with FCP X performance.  It just can't be right that problems I am having are normal.  I have a new macbook pro with 2.6Ghz , 16GB Ram, 512 SSD and connected to a lacie thunderbolt rugged drive.  Just about as good as it gets outside a monster mac pro right.  When editing the projects I am getting consistent delays of a second or more and randomly I get ones that are longer and the machine freezes completely.  When I try and look into it on activity monitor the only thing that seems to be taxed is the RAM but even that does not seem to be maxed.  Sometime if I clip on another app there is a delay and I thought maybe that could be because FCP X is hogging the RAM but can't tell. All software is up to date. The projects do have mixed frame rates and resolutions but that should be ok.  I have not even started to colour correct yet, there are a number of retiming and effects but nothing much.
It is driving me crazy as I am looking to use shortcuts and keyboard commands but I am constantly waiting….. very…very..frustrating.  I have set prefs to better performance and tried proxy editing while editing.  I have switched of background editing as well.  I can not use this software anymore if this is what I must get used to.  Please can anyone help with this as it is going to cost me money.  I have been using FCPX for a while and don't want to have to learn a new one when this should work.
I am still unsure if I should render only when in original footage pref and if I shouod render before exporting.  I do render as I thought it would output a lower bit rate if not.
Thanks for your time and any advice is welcome

With such a machine the slowness is *not* normal. Does it happen *all the time*?
You are right that low RAM is often the cause of slowdowns, but that would happen if your free RAM is in the tens of MB - it does not seem to be the case.
Do you have many projects and events available? All these take up RAM. You can disable the projects and events that you are not working on - use Event Manager or manually create a "Final Cut Events - Hidden" and a "Final Cut Projects - Hidden" folder and move unused events and projects in the Finder (while FCP X is not running).
The usual first recommendation is to trash your preferences. All sorts of misbehavior can occur if the preferences files get corrupted. Use Preference Manager (free from Digital Rebellion) to trash your preferences.

  • Macbook Pro 13 inch (2011) freezes all the time

    Hi all ,
About a week ago, I started to experience difficulties working on my MacBook Pro - the whole system started to "freeze" and glitch all over the place, e.g. finder not responding like it should be, opening folders takes ages (in some cases up to 1 minute), and even as I type this text now. In my case, rebooting did not do the trick, my Mac was still glitching like ****.
So I went on, freed 150GB of data on hard drive, deleted all Autostart Applications, even wiped PVRAM, however, the results were negative - nothing changed, whilst Disc Utility reported, that no mistakes with drive were found. I then continued to struggle, and this time wiped the hard drive, and reinstalled the system completely from disc. However, after the system had been installed (after about 3 hours of wait), I noticed that yet again my Mac is freezing up, just like before.
So here lays my question - is there anything else I can do, before taking it to local Apple Store ?

I've been having the same issues. However, I've replaced the hard drive and memory sticks and clean installed Snow Leopard twice now, but I'm still having issues with freezing. Typically it will freeze one application, followed by inability to use expose, spaces, and the other applications I have open in succession as I try to access them. So far I've reset RVRAM, run disk utility, hardware tests, and just about everything else there is with no luck.
I have a mid-2009 13" so I'm wondering if it's the processor beginning to go but I'll keep trying.
I've been in to the Genius Bar twice in the last week.  Apple will try to run their tests on every part of your system. However, nothing came back wrong the first time and they sent me home. It crashed at least half a dozen times that night. After a week more of trouble shooting, I took it back in and still nothing. I've also gotten the '?' folder upon bootup many times and the 'prohibitory' sign upon bootup as well. I'm guessing its the CPU for me but if yours is new, it should still be under warranty and Apple will fix it (if they can find a problem). I'll keep looking and working on this until I can get mine working again and if I figure it out, I'll let you know.
    Best of luck

  • Macbook Pro 13" late 2011 crashes when i plug out a "Focusrite Saffire 6 USB" while in sleeping mode.

    Hi Forum,
I have a problem with my Macbook Pro crashing when i plug out my "Focusrite Saffire 6 USB" while it´s still in sleep mode.
I do have the latest drivers and updates so is there any way to fix that Problem ( besides not pluging it out while in sleep mode)?

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2013 15" freezes when using safari

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15" 2.7ghz, 16gb Ram with 512 gb SSD.  Since the recent EFI update and the OSX 10.8.3 update, when I have been using Safari, my mac has become very sluggish and I get the spinning beachball whihch doesn't clear.  I have only had this MacBook for 17 days.  has anyone else had this problem?

hope there will be a fix soon…
Yours is not a common problem, and no fix for it will be forthcoming automatically anytime soon.
The symptoms you describe could indicate a failing Hard drive, and you should set all else aside and make certain your Backups are completely up-to-date.

In cases like this, a visit to the Genius Bar is really the best solution. Your appointment at the Genius Bar for an evaluation is FREE, in warranty or out.
