Macbook Pro 13 inch early 2011 running slow

Hi, I've had my Macbook Pro (13", early 2011) for about three years now and it has been very well behaved up until now. It has 4GB of ram and is the basic model of its kind. I recently upgraded the operating system to Mavericks but I noticed it was being slow even before the upgrade. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive through time machine so data loss isn't a worry.
I have noticed that opening applications such as Mail, Word, Google Chrome, iCal, Spotify and iPhoto have become increasingly slow and browsing the internet (youtube, tumblr, etc) is similarly slow with content and sound lagging. I wonder if I should buy and install more ram? Or is it a problem with the hard drive? On average how long would a macbook pro of this age last?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had.  Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles.  I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files.  Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.
    Ciao.

Thank you so much! This really helped, but I fear that there are still settings or installed software components that are slowing the macbook down.

Have deleted (secure delete) and reinstalled several times. Got it to open once right after download... Usually crashes/hangs upon attempted start-up, then shows as "Application unresponsive".   Must be forced to quit.
No other audio interfaces or drivers installed that I am aware of. Playback through onboard audio interfaces, sometimes routed to Apple TV via Cat 5 cable, out to receiver via fiber optic SPDIF, or to Panasonic HDTV via HDMI cable through Thunderbolt port.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • MacBook Pro 15 early 2011 slower than it must be...!!!

    Hello everybody,
I have an MacBook Pro 15 early 2011, 2.2 Ghz, 4 RAM... It is running Mavericks 10.9.5, the latest update... The Etrecheck statistics seems to be very fine. So, here are some good and interesting questions: Why does my Mac work not that fast as it was on Slow Leopard? Why do I wait around 25-30 seconds to run Microsoft Office Document? Why the operating system is booting around 60 seconds? Why when I use software like MatLab, it turns that is not so possible to switch between the apps really fast, because multitasking freezes?
At the beginning, when I installed Mavericks 10.4.1, I thought that it is not enough RAM, after I read some comments from people that are using 2009 MacBooks running Mavericks and everything is fine, I canceled this possibility. Then I thought that my HDD is dead, I checked it 1000 times, its fine... So, the question is: what could it be, slowing my mac???
I plan to increase my RAM to 16 GB, but I am really not sure if it will help, because mavericks has another algorithm of RAM usage...
Really hope to hear some logical answers!

    Best regards,

Remove "MobileGo," or else refer to its developer for support.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011 - Running Extremely Slow

I've only had my Macbook Pro for about 9 months. Lately it's been running EXTREMELY slow, and freezing up at some times. I have a RAM monitor, and it will sometimes drop below 192MB! I have 4GB installed, and I only run a few light-weight applications, No Final Cut, or Photosop. On a typical day I'll have the following open at once: Safari, Spotify, Minecraft, Mail, Messages
Nothing 4GB can't handle right? I guess not. I don't download from untrusted websites, so I doubt it's a virus. I honestly have no clue. I don't have the Apple Care, and I'm not sure if this is covered in the 1yr limited warranty that is included with the computer. Hopefully someone can help me resolve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Caleb.

  • My MacBook Pro is walking, not running, slow

My MacBook Pro, circa early 2011 is getting progressively slower. I recently installed Yosemite, but the slow down had already started before that. It is not always consistently slow, at times it is fine. Sometimes however, when I type, the text takes around 30 seconds or more to even show up. Sometimes it never shows up at all. I play a guessing game as to whether or not I need to retype the sentence, usually to find out I didn't, it was just taking a minute this time. Safari may sit for a few minutes before responding, and yes the router is working fine, all our other devices have no problems getting out. I have repaired permissions and I have cleared some hard drive space so I have over 70GB free.
    Thanks for your help,
here is the Etre System Report:
    Problem description:
MacBook Pro is running painfully slow. but not consistently. At times I will type and it may take 30 seconds or more for the text to show up. Applications may creep or not work at all. I recently upgraded to Yosemite, but the slow down started prior to that. I have repaired permissions and cleared hard drive space as well.

  • Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 Lag Spikes

Okay let me just brief you on my Macbook.
In September 2011 i bought a Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 model, 4GB RAM, 2.7GHz Processor, you can get the rest on the site.
I bought it as a ex-display model, so you can imagine it already has some milage from it.
Through the (almost) 2 years i've had it, apart from the odd overheat shutdown, and a 1 charger replacement, it's been no hassle, even with me constantly shutting it and moving it. It seems that all the issues are coming in bulk.
I generally use the laptop for gaming, mostly World of Warcraft, sometimes Minecraft, and lately Starcraft, and Spellforce on BOOTCAMP or virtual machines.
About 2 weeks ago, the laptop started refusing to charge, i couldn't understand if it was the charger (as i only replaced it a few months earlier and the cable was still in perfect condition) or the port itself in the laptop. I took my laptop to an Apple store, found it was the Magsafe on the cable, replaced it on the spot, but the reason why i'm saying this is i'm wondering why it broke so quickly, and if lack of power has anything to do with it.
I've grown a liking to Spellforce so instead of having to restart into the Windows side of my Mac, i just use the Virtualbox Virtual OS i already have set up from when i used to work from home and have to use certain software on windows because Wine just couldn't cut it (and lets face it, Mission Control is awesome, then you go on Windows and everything just seems to cluttered). So i read the default specs for the game on Steam (2GB) so i give Virtualbox 2GB, but this was a MAHOOSIVE mistake, because as soon as i clicked start, it's been a down hill spiral.
The computer immediately started lagging, to the point where the laptop was actually unusable, so i force restarted it by pressing down the power button for 5 seconds and i let it restart. After it booted, everything seemed fine (i expected nothing else) so i decided to only give it 1GB of RAM, and just turn down the settings to the lowest possible (which is something i've had to do with World of Warcraft recently. It used to be able to run on Ultra when i first got the laptop, now it struggles on low and if i have a browser up at the same time). Again, big mistake, it lagged to unusability. So i restart again, but this time it takes 5 minutes to boot, and once booted everything is so slow, so i decide to re-install the OS, so i get my flash drive and spend the next hour moving things over from my user folder because when i would try to move a folder that had 5+ files or something that was 100MB or larger, it would error out saying a certain file couldn't be read or written, and would cancel and remove everything else that was transfering at the time.
So i restart but boot into the recovery option, and do a refresh the OS, and i let it download and install. I was surprised to see when it had all completed that it still had all my files, but it still ran slow, not as slow as before but definitely not as good as before, i would estimate at quatre the performance. So i assume that Virtualbox must have editted some system setting and my Mac thinks i only have 2GBs of RAM and not 4GB, so i search on how to reset the bootloader, and i was tried the alt + cmd + r + p, but after that when it booted, it came to the wallpaper but i was getting these popups that Finder had unexpectedly quit, so i click Okay a few times, they keep coming back up, so i look at the details and it says that the app had failed 500+ times before.
So i put my Snow Leopard disk in, use Disk Utility and use erase on my Mac OS partition, then i re-install Snow Leopard, then i download and install Mountain Lion again, but the snails pace remains. I do alittle more research and someone suggested modifying the partition size by a few gigs or so to re-write it and reset certain variables attached, didn't work, even after a reboot.
So yesterday i just put the Snow Leopard disk in, and i remove both partitons (Mac and Windows) and i make one partition. I install Snow Leopard and then Moutain Lion, and so far it appears that everything it back up to speed... however, i've been keeping a keen eye on Activity Moniter and "top" in Terminal, and my CPU usage and RAM usage are always relatively low. I always seem to have 1GB-2GB RAM free, and my Idle CPU always seems to be above 80%-90% but i'm getting these weird lag spikes. I notice it most when i try installing World of Warcraft again, the download speed averages around 3MB/s (my ISP is Virigin Media and i get 60Mbs/s fibre optic so i know it's not my connection failing) and then the app seems to freeze (stops refreshing the average speed, and then about 5-10 seconds later, it starts refreshing again but it's at 12-50KB/s. This also seems to happen a lot when i use web browsers.
I have noticed something new, literally only about 30 minutes before i started writing this. There is a noise that happens every 2-4 seconds, it's pretty regular, it sounds like a grasshopper, or other chirping bug/insect inside my laptop. It sounds like metal scraping against metal, which is worrying. It's coming from the right hand side of the Magic Track Pad, which is where i believe the Hard Drive is. I've looked online and this seems to be a sign that the harddrive is dying.

Yeah, the problem has been solved.
Unfortunately, the solution is buying a new storage device.
So if you're having these issues, i tried almost everything consumer possible, that's free anyway, and the hard drive was just too faulty to work properly. So backup all your stuff whilst you still can.
I bought an SSD for around £80, only 120 gigs of storage, but i have iTunes Match so i don't need to have my films and music downloaded.
If you're very mobile with your laptop, then i suggest getting an SSD. Lugging about a laptop with a storage device with moving parts is very very risky.
As soon as i got a new storage device, everything was back to normal. It was like it was new again.
Anyway, sorry i can't give you a free solution, but it's the only solution i got.

  • 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011.takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!
    -Christina C.

  • When i connect my philips 170c monitor to my macbook pro 13" early 2011, it does not detect the second monitor?

help! i've googled around, but none seems to solve my problem
my macbook pro is early 2011, 13", running lion.
the philips monitor is vga only, so i have a mini display port to vga adaptor and connecting it to the vga.
the screen on my mbp does turn blue, but no input is detected on the external monitor.
    any advice?

If it does not detect the display automatically, try going to system preferences>displays, click detect displays.

  • I got my Macbook Pro 17inch (early 2011) back from Apple (they had to replace the logic board) and now my microphone is not working

I got my Macbook Pro 17inch (early 2011) back from Apple (they had to replace the logic board) 3 days ago, I had a terrible experience as the genious who gave me my solid state disk for safekeeping lost my disk's brackets thus I had to wait 2 more hours until they find one after 10 days of waiting for the repair. I noticed some weird sounds, like somehting is moving with the mac 1-2 times, even if I have no mechanical parts other than the fans, but my real issue at the moment is that my microphone is not working. I can see the mic in the System Info however and in Audio Midi Setup. In the Audio Midi Setup I see that the master chanel is turned off and I can't turn in on. Ch 1 and 2 are on full. I also noticed the first seconds after the comp. boots the blue bar goes to the middle in the System Preferences -> Sound -> Input. Any ideas what to do or try? I do not want to go back to the apple store as it is 50 minutes away from here and I need my laptop as a computer science student. Everything else is working perfectly.

You need to call both the store that did the repair and Apple directly, warranty service or Apple care, and report this problem with both of them and get a ticket number of some kind (some kind of verification number) that the unit just came back from major service with this problem and that you want it fixed when you can lose the use of it, which is not right now.
Without doing something like that they could easily say it is damage not covered under the normal warranty.
God knows what the repair center did and did not do to it while it was there.
And depending on when you actually bought it the warranty could run out in the mean time.

  • Macbook Pro 13" early-2011 Fans at high speed

    Hi guys,
I hope you can solve this pussle for me.
My Macbook Pro (13", early 2011, Core i5 @ 2.3) started to behave weird, its fan (only the exhaust one, since it's a 13" Macbook Pro with the Intel HD integrated graphics) is running at top speed (6200-6208 rpms) with no reason at all. No system processes consuming high CPU, just idling.
There's a twist to this issue, though. It only does it when I open the lid more than 90 degrees. If I get it back the fan returns to normal functioning.
    What I did:
checked the temperature sensor values, they are fine
checked for crazy background tasks, there are none, CPU usage is at max 7%
it does the same thing even in safe mode
    reset PRAM
    reset SMC
reinstalled OS X (Lion). Updated to 10.7.4
searched every discussion I could find on this matter
The difference between this issue and others I encountered along the way is the lid opening thing.
Does anyone know if getting the lid past the 90 degree mark triggers anything?
The other theory I have is that there's some dust blocking the intake and when the lid is opened wide, the air is somewhat obstructed by the bottom of it.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

You may have diagnosed the problem.

I would take off the bottom cover and see if there is any offending material.  If not, then the Apple store genius bar should be your next destination.
    Ciao.
