MacBook Pro 13 Inch Mid 2012 Hard Drive Replacement

Hi Guys,
Thinking about replacing my stock 500GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 13 Inch to a 1TB drive at 5200rpm as I don't really need the speed increase of a 7200rpm and would rather have improved battery life and have a hard drive a bit quiter.
However just wondering your opinions on the Western Digital Blue at the link below:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/inch-SATA-Internal-Hard-Drive/dp/B00C9TEBJQ/ref=sr_1_1?i e=UTF8&qid=1398026527&sr=8-1&keywords=Western+Digital+Blue+1TB+2.5%22#productDet ails
Does it work in my version of the MacBook Pro? I've always used Western Digital drives in my desktop no problem, just wondering about this working in my MBP.
Any help would be much appreciated,
Cheers.

I will take a different position.  For about a year now I have used 1 TB HDDs in my MBPs.  I have had 1 TB 5400 rpm HGST HHDs, 1 TB 7200 rpm HGST HDDs and now have 1 TB SSHD Seagate in my late 2011 MBP.
They all have been quiet with no performance issues.  Though I do have much data on external HDDs (principally videos) I would prefer to have all of my data resident on my MBP.  In my opinion that would be more convenient for several reasons but large enough drives are not available yet.  My current drive is about 90% full.
Quite frankly I fail to understand the 'accepted wisdom' since my experience tends to refute that premise.
I can recommend any of the afore mentioned drives as valid options as an internal HDD.
Ciao.

  • Can the Macbook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) Hard Drive be Upgraded?

I have a Macbook Pro Retina Display Mid 2012 that has a 512GB SSD Hard Drive. I am finding that I need more space and having an External Hard Drive is a little inconvenient. I see that there are 1TB SSD and thinking of changing out my Hard Drive. Is this possible? If so, what brand of Solid State Drive should I look into. Thank you for your time.

  • Macbook Pro 15" Mid-2012 hard disk models?

    Hello,
i am interested in buying the 2012 Macbook Pro 15 inch model and plan to upgrade the 750GB 5400rpm hard disk to a 7200rpm.
Does anyone know what model is being used? Thankyou.

I know. The WD Scorpio Black comes with a 3yrs warranty (provided you dont buy an OEM device). I understand that many people are actually better off buying the stock option and upgrading themselves. However, I buy Apple/Mac to avoid having to worry about the computer running, it just has to. So, if i can get the upgrade for only 50 Euros, for me this is the better choice. Thus, any defect will be Apple's problem during the lifetime of the Apple Care protection plan. (BTW: I have had bad experiences with Apple support declining to take a Mac Mini server crashing problem under investigation because of myself swapping the memory against Micron Mac-certified RAM and i'd rather avoid some support declining to repair the logic board because they say something went wrong whiie i swapped the hard disk... i am an engineer, but you just never know)

  • Macbook Pro (Late 2011) 15" - Hard Drive Replacement Problem

    Hi there guys,
My standard 750GB Hitachi Hard Drive failed on me last week and after speaking to AppleCare who told me that my laptop was out of warranty, I decided to try and fix the problem myself as I have a few friends that have had the same issue in the past and have switched the hard drives themselves.
I bought a 1TB Western Digital WD10JPVX which comes with SATA-III, which I was led to believe my computer could handle after reading the numerous threads on here confirming so.
I've fitted the new hard drive and sure enough the SATA connector attached fine, now the problem arises when I turn on my computer. On startup (with the OS X install disc inside the drive), the normal boot up chime sounds along with the Apple logo on screen, however, nothing else happens.
    I've tried the following:
    1. Holding down the Option Key to go into Startup Manager - After selecting the OS disc (with no hard drive listed alongside) nothing happens.
    2. Pressed the C button to boot from DVD - Again, no response.
    3. Tried to boot without the disc - Folder logo with a question mark in the middle flashes on screen, which I would imagine means no hard drive installed.
If anyone else has had similar problems then I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks
    Matt Bayley

I own both the early and late 2011 15" MacBook Pro.
BOTH these Macs can RUN 10.6.8. Neither can Boot from the "Full Retail" 10.6 DVD, because it contains at best 10.6.3

The table show that your Mac shipped with 10.7.2  but i have affirmed (from other sources) that it is mainly a "speed bump" of the early 2011 version, and could run 10.6.7 if there were such an Installer DVD.
Release Discs for a different model Mac will NOT work, because they only have the Drivers for that model. So forgetabout your iMac discs.
I had to start with a "full retail" 10.6.3, Install on another appropriate Mac, update to 10.6.8, then clone to the MacBook Pro. Works fine, but what a torturous path.
Were you running 10.6.8 or 10.7 or other when it stopped working?

  • My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

  • Upgrading hardware in MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012)

    Hello,
I'd like to upgrade my MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2012). I've decided to replace my HDD with SSD, obviously, and add some RAM memory. I would appreciate if you let me know what do you think about the following hardware:
    Crucial 2x4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL11
    SSD Crucial MX100 256GB SATA3 2.5" 550/330 MB/s 7mm
Do you have any experiance with this particular hardware and do you think it's OK for my Mac, which btw I use mostly for my work: Mail, iWork, LibreOffice, Safari, iTunes, VLC etc.
Thanks in advance for your answers!

You can upgrade RAM(till 16GB) as well as HDD.

  • Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012 low fps in bootcamp

    Hello,
My English is not so good, so sorry if it's not correct, but I hope anyone could help me.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012, 2,3 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB ram, 250 GB SSD.
My problem is when I go to bootcamp for gaming I get realy low fps. The most games start at 30 fps, but then they drop immediately to 8/9 fps and a second later back to 30 fps.
It's like a car, when you drive to hard you have to slow down, but then you drive to slow so you need to go faster. He speed up and a second or 2 later he kicks on the brakes and a moment later he speed up again and kicks again on the brakes.
Even with al the game setting on realy low and the lowest resolution. And that al the time in every game. My bootcamp is Windows 8 but in Windows 7 did I have the same problem. I did already a SMC reset and Pram reset and 5 clean installs. But nothing works. I installed al the updates in OS X en in Windows. There al alrealy some forums about this problem, but by them was a SMC reset enough. Maybe something is wrong with my Nvidia grapihc card. The problems starts everytime when the Nvidia card need to do this work.
it's quite an annoying problem, it's not a cheap laptop, but my old laptop ( 2 years old ) are the gaming performs better compared to this one. I think the problems start after this SMC update http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1559?viewlocale=en_US but I'm not quite sure.
Are there more people with this problem, please let me know. And maybe how you solve it.
I hope realy if any one could help me.
If you know a anser, please give it in a comment
    Thanks,

My MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012 at Mavericks 10.9.3 is freezing up several times a week -- often happens, but not limited to, using the Application Window key.

You have too much junk installed…
    The 'easy' way - reinstall
I think you will be quickest backing up the HD to an external disk (check it still boots!). Erase the internal HD, reinstall 10.9, migrate your USER DATA ONLY back to 10.9, reinstall the apps you use, then delete the old login items & user launchd jobs that migrated. You should have a stable system at the end of it.
The hard way - 'cleaning up'
Firstly search these forums for opinions on running Sophos's AV - it adds extra work to your system & many have had issues with it on 10.9. At the very least ensure it is the latest release & 10.9 supported. Sophos is running 7 system level background jobs and 2 kernel extensions! These all can modify how the system runs.
At the end of cleanup you may have a stable system - it really depends on how much effort you put into clearing out all the system level jobs that are not compatible with 10.9. The developers don't make it easy to remove software too, so you may have a lot of searching to do (for instructions & uninstallers).

Uninstall Jacksta, the 'startup items' have been deprecated since 10.4 - Apple told developers to stop using them years ago.
Update all the other apps listed or find uninstallers/ removal instructions to correctly remove the software.
Are all those sierrawireless and novatelwireless drivers used or needed anymore?
Can you uninstall BlueStacks? It's failing to run jobs inside your user account, get rid of things that don't work (or update them & check they do work).
Java's updater is failing to run - is Java up to date? Do you need Java installed? It isn't installed on Mac OS anymore because of it's lousy security record. Update or remove if you don't need it.
You could try removing Sophos & find that the Mac runs OK - but eventually having all the old kernel extensions & background jobs around will eventually cause something else to break.

  • MacBook Pro 15'' mid 2012 does not boot

    Hi
We upgraded our MacBook Pro 15'' (mid 2012) we changed the memory from 4GB to 16GB, changed the hard-disk for a 512GB Samsung SSD and installed 10.10 Yosemite (clean install)
Everything worked OK, we installed some software. All of a sudden the laptop switched itself of. We thought the battery was empty but as it turned out, the notebook is dead. When starting we hear the clicking sound of the DVD drive but that's it, no chime. The screen stays black although we think we see some backlight, very weakly.
We tried a lot, putting back the old drive and memory but the behavior is the same. We removed all memory and then the MBP beeps, but does not start.
Reset PRAM, reset SMC, removed the battery, nothing helps.
    - Is the beeping an indication that the CPU still works?
    - What can be the cause of this?
    - What can we do?
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Beach ball of Death at log in Screen Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2012 10.10.3   supplemental

I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid-2012 that is running 10.10.3 with all updates (including supplemental 10.10.3 update), that will "beach ball" when I click one of the user accounts after the MacBook starts up.   If I wait 10-15 minutes, I am able to enter a password.  Usually after doing so, it takes another 10-15 minutes to log in before I can actually use the computer.
    MacBook is joined to domain.
Problem with beach ball occurs on all user accounts, domain, local and mobile.
Can boot Mac into Safe Mode just fine- no beach ball.
I have tried reinstalling Yosemite using the Recovery Partition.  This did not fix the problem.
Original Yosemite install is a clean install on the Mac hard drive (completely erased existing OS before installing Yosemite).
Recently purchased the Mac- problem occurred 2 weeks after purchase.  I had been using Mac with 10.10.3 fine up until yesterday.
Tried resetting NVRAM and SMC.  No change.
Booted into Safe Mode, ran Disk Utility.
Booted regular (waited) and ran Disk Utility.
No change after running Disk Utility.
Not sure if this is a residual 10.10.3 problem (again, the Mac has the 10.10.3 supplemental update) or it is a hardware problem.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you

The spinning beach ball is the please wait. Till your computer can allocate more memory to the app you are tying to open. Since it happens in all user accounts, you have an app or apps with a startup item that is using a lot of memory. Something that all users have access to. That is why you can startup in safe mode. Opening and running the activity monitor in all processes for memory might help you to find out what is causing this. It could be more than one process. Safe mode disables a lot of startup items and some other non essential apps. You could download and run Etrecheck. Post it and we might be able to see where your problem is.http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck If you have a lot of ad on programs that you run ,you might need more memory.

  • Dropped MacBook Pro i5 Mid 2012 Fan tries to spin but cuts out, Battery Charging Indicator light showing but cuts out

    Good evening,
A few weeks ago i dropped my MacBook Pro (i5 Mid 2012) and it failed to turn on, battery had charge in it at the time.
When i press the power button nothing happens. I have also tried resetting the SMC, nothing happens.
Next i plugged in the mag safe charger, before i pressed the power button i saw the charging light come on for a second then cut out.
If i press the power buttong, nothing happens.
I opened the back of the machine and tried the above steps again to see what happened.
    1. When i press the power button nothing happens.
    2. When i plugged in the mag safe charger, before ti pressed the power button i see the fan starts to spin for maybe 2 seconds then stops. I hear the hard drive start to spin but that also stops at the same time, during this the front batter charging indicator light also illuminates, but also cuts out.
Its like when you attach the charger it wants to do something but stops everything after 2 seconds. I left it plugged in for maybe 1 min and its just repeated this action maybe 20 times.
At no stage when i press the power buttong, plugged in or not does it react.
I have taken out the hard drive and plugged into another manchine as an external drive and it works perfectly. Hard drive is no problem! From what i can see all connections are ok, and appear to be plugged in correctly, no burn marks or damage visible.
    Logic board failure from impact?
    Thanks,
    Gary

Wouldn't this be better in the Macbook Pro forum than the Pages forum:

My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012 version run quite slowly?

I used to have a Windows PC, which ran VERY VERY VERY slowly. I heard that Macs did not get viruses and ran very quickly, so I bought a brand new MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012 version (entry level). At first it was running quite smoothly, but after some time it became slower, with boot ups taking about 2-3 minutes, instead of the 30 seconds boot up time I kept on hearing on Internet reviews. Is the RAM (4GB) insufficient? Or is 30 seconds just exaggerated? Launching apps can take quite a while, especially graphics intensive apps such as iMovie. Opening folders in my thumb drive can be quite a pain too, seeing as there is a lot of visible lag in the opening of files and folders.

Boot times of 2-3 minutes are a little slow, my 15" doesn't do 30 seconds but faster than 2-3 minutes.  From your comments about how you are using the MBP, the entry level model may not have been the best choice...the 13" models have only one graphic processor, the 15" models have two.  The normal-usage Intell 4000 and a discrete AMD that kicks in with graphic intensive software.  If you are going to do a lot of video and games, the discrete processor will be a big help.  Also, 4 GB ram is often more than adequate, but some software really benefits from more ram.
You can check the ram usage, and cpu usage, by going to Launchpad, Utilities, Activity Monitor.  See what the memory usage is with your software open and active...is the ram being used fully, are there a lot of page ins and page outs?  That means it is using the mass storage as it runs out of memory space.  If that is the case, increasing the ram to 8 GB will help.
The Activity Monitor can also show you the load on the cpu so that gives an idea of how much you are pushing the system.

  • Macbook pro 15 mid 2012 with os x 10.8.4 taking long time to boot up

i am using macbook pro 15 mid 2012

after system starded its hard to open any application(safari) for starting time some times while using safari the cursor is in not responding i mean doing some process its showing colour wheel rotating
please tell me how to speed up my macbook pro

How much free disk space is available ??
Click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About this Mac > More Info > System Report then select Storage on the left under Hardware.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
If there's sufficient free disk space, check for login items. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Delete any items there then restart your Mac to test.
some times while using safari the cursor is in not responding i mean doing some process its showing colour wheel rotating
    Try troubleshooting plugins and extensions...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If it's not a plug-in issue, select the Extensions tab. If there are any extensions installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.  If that made a difference, uninstall one at a time, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
