Macbook Pro 13" (Late 2010, 7,1) 8GB RAM upgrade, boot up error
Dear all,
I am currently trying to update my brother's macbookpro7,1 13" to more current hardware with a new 128GB SSD and more RAM (he has 4GB). The SSD was installed successfully and runs perfectly fine, but when I installed the 8GB RAM into my brother's macbookpro7,1, it produces a black screen and a beep with 5 second pauses in between. I had looked up this error code and it indicates that the RAM cannot be found. This is where I am having difficulty understand, because I actually pulled the 8GB RAM from my other Macbook Pro 15" and it runs fine there. After noticing the error, I swapped back in the old RAM and both Macbook Pro's start up and run just fine. (Before I reinstalled the old RAMs to their respectively laptops though, I had attempted multiple solutions, like cleaning the RAM slots, reseating but to no avail, still black screen and beep.) The only difference I noticed on the RAMs are the 8GB are 1 Rank (1Rx8) and the 4GB is 2 Ranks (2Rx8) . Other than that, they are both DDR3 at 1066Mhz. Is the rank causing this problem? I'd suggest you look at the manufacturer info on the 8 gig modules, then check their website to see if it's compatible with the 13".

iPhoto library is on external HDD
I was in a slideshow, with around 1,911 photos in it. About halfway through, my Macbook ran out of battery. Now when I restarted and charged the Macbook and reopened iPhoto, the slideshow won't advance through photos, and I can't figure out any reason why it would do this.
I thought it may be corrupted, so I deleted and reinstalled iPhoto library, iPhoto itself, and disconnected and reconnected my external HDD.
This didn't work, the photos still won't advance.
I don't know any reason why this would be happening, and there is ample space on my internal drive.

JamesMake a few tests, James, to narrow down the problem and find out, if the slideshow is corrupted, your iPhoto Library, or settings in your account.
To test, if only your slideshow has a problem, create a new slideshow, just for testing. Just use "File > New Slideshow" and add a few photos. Does this slideshow play correctly?
If the test slideshow does not play either, create a new iPhoto Library. Use the File menu in iPhoto: File > Switch to library > Create New. Import a few photos and create a slideshow. Does it play?
If even a new library does not solve the problem, test in a different user account (see this document: Isolating an issue by using another user account - Apple Support):
This process involves creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
Create a new standard or admin user account in Users & Groups preferences.

After you have completed testing, log out of the test account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in as your regular account.
After you have completed all testing with the test user account, you may want to delete it. You can delete an account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences.
Note: Prior to deleting a test account, make sure you are completely done with it. If you have files in the Guest User you wish to keep, you should copy them to the /Users/Shared folder .
If you should find, that slideshows only play in a new user account, post back. -

What version of LR should I choose to run it on a 2008 macbook pro OS 10.5 (updated with 8GB RAM)
As it says in the title: I want to run LR on my 2008 macbook pro OS 10.5 (updated with 8GB RAM). Adobe support told me that it would not be a problem, yet i'm confronted with a com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1. I have no idea what it is or how to solve it.
Can you please help me? Thank you.You will not be able to use a LR 5 key on an older LR. While an intermediate version of OS X may be easier on your system and may allow a newer version of LR than LR3, if it is not current you still have to get that old version of LR from an alternate channel.
If you have an easy way to clone your system I would try upgrade you Yosemite and putting LR 5 on it since you have a key. If it doesn't perform to your satisfaction you can always clone back to 10.5 and seek an alternate solution.
However, was the LR 5 key owned by your previous job along with that other laptop? If so, it violates the license for you to use it. -
I was planning on buying a new 13 inch MacBook Pro with 512 GB memory and 8GB RAM. The main purpose for this purchase Is to be able to run Final Cut Pro anywhere I want to. Should I upgrade to 16 GB of RAM with the added expense and wait time or is that overkill?
8GB should be plenty . . . though as with most things in life, it all depends on exactly what you are doing. If you intend to edit long, highly complex projects loaded with effects and multicam clips you can't get enough RAM.
For over 3 years, I and many others, have been using 4GB with no problems. -
Add Supported Channels Airport extreme Macbook Pro 15' late 2010
My wireless network at school recently added another router under our classroom. The channel for this connection is channel 13 which is not supported under the default supported channel settings.
I was wondering if there is way to add or change these settings.

Thank you for the reply. One thing I forgot to mention is that I am in Israel. I didn't think this would be an issue! Anyway, during this week I was able to find out a little more information about this problem.
Our wifi network at school is "shared" by two routers. The first is in one building about 300 meters away and it is using channel 5, and the second is in our music studio and it is using channel 13. We asked our network administrator at school to either change the name of the second router in our studio or to just change the channel to 1-11. He said that just because we have macs he will not go through the trouble(hater). The iMacs we use in our classroom were bought here in israel, so I am assuming that this is the reason they have channel thirteen and everyone who bought a mac book pro in America does not have channel 13.
ANYWAY!!
Definately an annoying problem that can be solved in a minuet, but because of some very lazy people it might take a little more effort. Thank you once again for the help, I really appreciate it.

hi i need help, im new on mac, i bought the las year a macbook pro 13's late 2011 with 4 gb of ram and 500 gb of hdd, i5 proccesor of 2.4. the mbp was working ok, until yesterday, i was working on keynote and then, it started to getting really slow, then it frozzen, and the little umbrella start to appears,i tried every thing, i shut down the power button, wait a minute then i power up, and nothing, i run the ccleaner, i check the hdd status, the ram, and everything was ok, i even boot up the system like fabric and still nothing i got the umbrella everything than i run an application. please please help me.

Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz Core i5 8GB RAM - Constant RAM usage?

I just upgraded my Macbook Pro's RAM to a DDR3 8GB 1067MHz setup that came highly recommended after much research on the topic. My question is, how come in my Activity Monitor I have so much RAM being used at any given time? It doesn't seem to matter if I have ZERO applications or 15 applications open, it's constantly using more than 2GB.
I understand that inactive is just as good as free, but still even including inactive, it's still sucking more than 2GB with nothing open.
On top of that, I run NO virtual machines, yet I have roughly 1GB wired ALL THE TIME.
Now I've read mixed reviews about how OSX Snow Leopard manages RAM, and I have to say, I am concerned with these numbers. Also, I have no page outs, so I don't think I have a RAM stick issue.
Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on here? also if there is a program out there that can manage this better than SL is currently doing (which is a crappy job it seems).

The 1GB wired is your OSX, and can only be changed if you work at removing some parts that you don't need. I've read where some people have gotten the wired OSX memory down to 600MB, but it doesn't seem to be very productive.
As for having 2GB running, if you remove the 1GB for OSX, then you'll have dozens of tasks still running to do everything from running the monitor to sound to everything else. Moreover, they get into RAM, because there is plenty of room. BUT, if you open applications, some of these processes may grow or shrink depending on needs.
Here is an older article about Mac memory use. It's a bit dated, but pretty accurate.
I personally think you're fine. You have over 6GB available for everything you might do. I run Aperture in 64bit, and 4GB for me is more than fine. -
MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 Experiencing Significant Slow Down After Boot Camp Installation
Okay, so today, after installing Windows 7 on my MacBook Pro via Bootcamp Assistant, I experienced significant performance slow down (fans going at full blast, applications opening after extended periods of time, keystrokes not being registered) when I returned to my OS X partition/second hard drive. I have dual hard drives, one of them being a Samsung 256 GB SSD with OS X Mavericks and the other being my original 500 GB HDD, divided into a 250 GB OS X Mavericks partition and a 250 GB Windows partition. I have the SSD set as my startup disk and I have it located in the main HDD bay. I moved the old HDD into a caddy and placed it where the optical drive normally should be.
After multiple failed attempts to install Windows via USB and Bootcamp Assistant, I decided to reinstall my optical drive and use a Windows installation disk. This attempt proved successful, and I was able to install Windows 7 onto the 250 GB partition I had created for it on the 500 GB HDD. After completing basic setup of Windows, I removed the optical disk drive and reinstalled the SSD and the HDD into their original spots (SSD in the main HDD bay, HDD in the caddy where the optical drive normally is).
After completing this tedious process, I booted my Mac back up using the SSD. However, I noticed something was wrong when the login screen, apps, and nearly everything else on my desktop had slowed to crawl. I decided to check my Activity Monitor to see what the problem might be. Activity Monitor told me that the task "kernel_task" was taking up anywhere from 200-600% of my CPU, which explained the slowdown in performance. I looked around to see if there were others with the same problem as me, and I found that Spotlight Indexing might be an issue, with a potential remedy being move my Bootcamp Partition into the Privacy section of Spotlight under System Preferences. After doing that, I experienced no increase in performance and everything was still going very slowly.
The next step I took was to see if booting into Safe Mode would help the issue. After booting into Safe Mode on my SSD, I noticed that things were back to their normal speeds, with applications opening at the speed they should be and keystrokes being registered instantaneously. However, the fans were still going and had not shut off once booting into Safe Mode. In addition, I checked Activity Monitor and the "kernel_task" in question was no longer taking up massive amounts of the CPU.
At this point, I don't know what to do and I need help in restoring my Mac to original speeds. I may end up deleting my Boot Camp partition as a last measure if all else fails, seeing as I installed Windows in the first place for running a few programs and games that I can live without. However, I'd prefer to not have things come to that and fix things before deleting the Boot Camp Partition. I've heard that if everything runs normally in Safe Mode, then the issue is third-party software. Is this true?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am writing this from the MacBook in question in Safe Mode because it's essentially useless in normal SSD operation.1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Will macbook pro (13-inch: 2.7 GHz, 8GB Ram), run logic pro9/pro tools8?
i have been looking at macbook pro's for a while and i thought that this would run the software fine, but i heard that it may not, i am not at all experienced with the was mac's in general distribute the cpu usage in comparison to windows and how memory/power hungry they are, obv they are not as bad as windows, they are alot more efficient, but thats as far as i know. ijust wnodered whether i needed to buy the macbook pro 15 inch with the quad core proicessor, will this be significantly faster and run the software logic pro9/pro tools8 better...please help me???

Best aftermarket 7200rpm HD for the Macbook Pro 15" Core i5 2.4GHz 8GB RAM
Ok <deep breath>. So I have been researching out the WAZOOOO now for the best aftermarket HD for my new Macbook Pro 15" 2.4 Core i5. It currently has the standard 320GB 5400rpm HD in it, so before I have too much data on it, I wanted to upgrade it so my machine will be faster and have more memory.
Requirements:
1. 500GB
2. 7200rpm (or faster if it exists which i don't does)
3. QUIET
4. Doesn't melt my computer (Temperature management)
5. No SSD, just too expensive for the 512GB ($1,300?!?!, are you crazy?)
Now from what I've read it has generally come down to 3 HD's, but what I don't have any perspective on is how they compare to EACHOTHER. So in no particular order:
1. HITACHI Travelstar 7K500 HD20500 IDK/7K 500GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s
2. Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT 500GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s
3. Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive
Can someone please chime in on which is best in these 3 categories: (In order of importance)
1. Speed
2. Noise

Hitachi 500gb 7200rpm drive that comes with MacBookPro has failed in my 3 month old i7 15" MacBookPro and to top it off Apple couldn't replace it in timely fashion. No store or Certified Service Repair shop had it in stock in a Tri-State Area (NYC). Took them 3 days to get a replacement drive in stock! This is a business machine and I could not afford being down for that long. Apple store and Apple Support on the phone both quoted me up to 7 business days to get the replacement hard drive in stock! I couldn't wait that long so I went out and bought the WD Scorpio Black 500gb 7200rpm from a local retail store.
Only reason why I went with WD is because the 320gb version had over 1000 reviews with 5 stars over all rating.

After installing the new drive I was back up and running in about an 2.5-3 hours time (over 150gb to restore). So far it works great! No complains here! If anything I would say it is quieter than Hitachi drive with less vibration. Regarding data throughput, I have not tested this yet.
I have owned various brands of hard drives in the past. Seagate, WD, Maxtor, IBM, Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba, etc... had them all. Had most of them fail on me in one way or another, which in some cases warranted a replacement. Lately I have had great luck with WD and I feel that their quality control has definitely improved. Seagate used to be my first choice but I am hearing they are slowly starting to go down hill. I personally would go for WD followed by Seagate. Never Hitachi! Every drive I ever owned by them has failed without giving any warning. I feel that the quality is just not there, kind of how Maxtor drives were back in a day.
I am waiting for the price to drop more and then will splurge on a SSD. 2 choices I found, and was recommended, are OWC ( http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internalstorage/Mercury_Extreme_SSD_Sandforce/Solid_StatePro ) and Cruical ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148349 )

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 install hangs on Bootcamp MacBook Pro 13 Late 2010
I have created my partition and am installing using the W7 64 bit DVD. Everything goes ok until I get to Expanding Windows Files - it hangs on 0%. Any ideas?
Same issue here, but it seems I just solved it.
I tried tu burn 2 DVDs of Windows 7, but both of them showed the same error.
Before that I tried to get some of my USB Devices to boot the setup from there which didn't work either.
Now I did the following trick: The Windows DVD boots, but doesnt install. So I booted from DVD until the welcome screen from the dvd cam up and plugged in my flashdrive with the windows setup files copied on it.
The I opened up a command window with shift + f10, changed to the flash drive in the subdirectory sources and executed the following command:
setup.exe /m:f:\sources /installfrom:f:\sources\install.wim
This starts the setup from the flashdrive and specifies the install image which should be used during setup. f: is the drive letter of the flash drive.
The usb drive and the dvd is only needed during the first phase of the setup where the image is copied to your HD.
As I'm now at 56% of "Expanding Windows files" it seems to work for me.

Upgraded to lion, thought it was going to be the hip new thing but I can't stomach it. Time to go back home.
The problem I'm having is that I can't run the snow leopard disk no matter how hard I try.
I tired booting to the cd and I got that pleasantly multi lingual message telling me "you must restart your computer"
I wrote the disk image to a USB and got the same massage when I tried to boot to it.
When I try and run the disk from the desktop I get the grammatical masterpiece of an error message "you have install Mac os x 23.1"
My computer is boot camped if that makes a difference at all, and I don't care about my data I have it manually backed up (not tm).
How I can snow leopard 10.6.8 again?First, do you have a backup? If so then you can just boot from your Snow Leopard disc, re-initialize the hard drive and install SL anew, then restore from an older backup (assuming you have one?).

P.S. You might be able to install without wiping your hard drive. To see, just use your SL disc and try to reinstall. I don't know - I've only gone back-in-time with TM since getting a new Mac with Lion installed. -
I have upgraded my MacBook Pro 15 late 2011 to 8Gb RAM, now when I go to about this mac in it more info it doesn't show AMD graphics card as it used to before, it just show Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB is that a problem that I need to worry about?
and in system report >> hardware >> Graphics/Display >> it shows both grafics card listed.Some Mac's when the RAM is increased the Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics will bump itself up to the higher video RAM it takes, this seems to be what occured.
It also means the dedicated graphics card will be used less, but only so slightly less.
You obviously still should have both, you can test this by turning off Graphics Switching in Energy Saver, that will use the decicated AMD card all the time.
