Macbook pro 13 retina 4 ram 128 SSD or 8 ram 256 SSD

Hello,
I would like to ask, what config would suit my needs the most. I have read all these forum questions, but I am still undecided.
Here are things that I WILL DO:
- Safari opened (max 20 tabs), music (iTunes), mail, skype = these tasks at the same time
- Full HD video playback (youtube, etc...) = only this task with skype running
- Pages or word = only this task with skype running
- 27 Full HD monitor connected via HDMI
Things I WON'T DO:
- playing games
- photo, video editing
- I wont be instaling new versions of OS X (will be on mavericks forever)
- no storing of heavy filles (only some documents, iTunes library which has about 15GB and that is all)
That's it. I would like to ask if the retina 13 base line models can provide me smooth experience with no lags, slow downs, page reloads, etc.. Or if I shloud consider the middle range model (8 ram, 256 SSD). I don't want Macbook air.
Thank you in advance and have a nice day. (sry for english )

Miselik,
Great clarity on describing your needs.
I use a 4 GB MBA on Mavericks with no issues.  However 8 GB will future-proof the machine as applications get larger.  So the 4/8 GB decision is not a heavy one.  Either will work.
A bigger decisions is can you live with 128 GB of mass storage or would you prefer 256?  From your description you indicate you will not need a lot of storage so 128 GB should do.  If you run out of SSD space you can always offload some files on an external disk.
For only $200 more I personally would go for the larger model but your description indicates the smaller model will work for your needs.

can i self upgrade my macbook pro with retina display ram?

To answer a little more directly - no. RAM on the Retinas is not connected through standared SODIMM slots, but connected directly to the logic board.

  • Would be an Macbook Pro with Retina screen with 128gb ssd enough?

    Heya there!
I'm gonna begin with college in 2 months in The Netherlands.
I am gonna do Programming such as: Php, html, jquery, mysql and much more. (It must be to have microsoft office on my laptop, and I guess also adobe PS, Illustrator, dreamweaver and much more..)
I'm thinking of buying a macbook pro with 8gb and 128 gb ssd, but im consired if 128 gb is enough...
Should I get a macbook pro with 256gb ssd and 8 gb ram for € 1.407,23, or a macbook pro with 8 gb ram and 128 gb ssd for: € 1.314,06..
I will also get a 70 euro giftcard, what should I buy which would be good for me to take with to the college?
    Greets,

I suggest that you contact the department at the school where you will be studying and pose that question to them.  Understand that at the present time, there are no third party storage options available allowing you to increase storage.  If you exceed the storage of the MBP, you will be forced to rely on an external HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro 13'' retina: 8gb or 16 gb? 128gb or 256 gb ssd?

    hi, I am photography student and thinking of buying a mid 2014 macbook pro 13'' with retina display.I am doing photoshop, illustrator, indesign and sometimes after effects and I want to use that mac at least 3 years. I am stuck on the ram,cpu and ssd configuration. so here is my questions;
    - should I choose 16 gb ram or 8gb is enough? (16 gb costs 150 usd more than 8gb)
-do i have to increase the cpu to 2.8 ghz ?
    and which ssd capacity?
any other suggestions are welcome and thank you!

Normal, not EDU price, is $2200 on what I think is as close as possible.

Those will give you some ideas from a tech savvy professional graphics perspective.
If there was a 32GB and you can afford the 1TB SSD then yes I would go for it.
The system is on a very fast PCIe-SSD and plugins, scratch and such means the boot drive gets a lot of use and will pay off, if not, then the 512GB SSD option. I just find $500 BTO COST for the 1TB over the 512 to be hard to swallow.
Add to that the need to add some Thunderbolt2 storage for your projects and such as your needs warrant, but something more than "just" USB3 (fine for backup and/or single drive use).

  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina Spec Query

I am looking to buy a MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display with 512GB SSD and I was wondering if it was necessary/worth upgrading to the i7 processor or 16GB of RAM or both. Will it still run fast with i5 and 8GB RAM? I will be using it for Photoshop, GarageBand, Surfing, and various college work. Do I need the i7 or will I be fine with i5. I am trying to future proof because I want it to last me a good few years.

I spent 30min on the phone to apple support resetting PRAM etc and its made no difference. He said they are compatible with b and g but they don't work as efficiently as the old macs. Because I'm with sky I can't have a custom or dual band router but the support guy suggested buying an airport express to plug in and use that as a dual band 5Ghz, which to be fair will bring better wireless to all of my devices so I'm going to buy one at the weekend.
I get about 1/5 of my net speed over my current router with my rMBP but if I disable my other devices my sagem sky router will auto N for my mac and it'll be full speed again. Shame you can't make that router only work on 5Ghz.

  • Aperture in full screen mode seems to crash MacBook Pro with Retina

    To anyone who has an idea;
I have a brand new (couple months old) 15" MacBook Pro w Retina (16GB RAM, 2.3GHz i7) and I can repeatedly crash it just by running Aperture in a full screen mode and flipping through the photos (I have 21000+ photos and I was cleaning them so it required a lot of flipping back and forth, deleting but no editing). It appears as if it was running out of RAM and not releasing it back. I have all the latest updates installed (always) and I know this is not related to my machine since within the first week of having it I noticed a dent on my screen and Apple sent me a brand new machine. I could replicate this behaviour on both machines.
To mitigate the restarts, I use FreeMemory Pro app set at "freeing" RAM once it drops to 4GB but if I push the Aperture too fast (and I do not mean major editing but just simply going through many photos in full screen mode, viewing them), I still crash it.
I was wondering if there is anyone else with something similar and if you have any tips. I have reported it to Apple.

    Hi,
I'm having exactly the same hard- and software configuration like you, Gordito73 - up to date of course as well. Aperture continues to crash after it really seams to run out of memory while editing lots of photos with many different effects. -.-

  • 13" MacBook Pro with Retina 256gb SSD and 16gb ram?

So I have decided to go with a 13" MacBook Pro with Retina.
I am now deciding on how to customize it...
    My uses are:
Primary -> Writing. I am an aspiring writer/ future published author, and this unit will serve as a primary storage unit for on-the-go writing. The SSD will help in this capacity, tremendously, as well as battery life, as inspiration to write can happen anywhere. I found he typability to be easier on the MacBook Pro as well, rather than the Air.
    Secondary -> Music, videos, gaming.
Basically, I am aware that the crispness of the rPro is apparent. I am not worried so much by the music, or videos, or even browsing part, as I'm sure its quite speedy.
What I am thinking is the might of the 4gb ram, 128gb SSD storage.
Would it be more worthwhile, since I plan to use this for 5+ years, to go for the little bit extra and get the 8gb ram, 256gb SSD storage unit, for only $200 extra. This seems a minor fee considering the length at which I plan to use and keep this.
That being said, I still play some older games and whatnot, with the possibility of playing World of Warcraft in the future... That being said, and knowing that Macs are not gaming powerhouses (unless you wish to go 15"+), would it be worthwhile to splurge another $200 for the 16GB ram? What major differences would doubling the 8 to 16 do for me and the performance of this MacBook?
    Thanks in advance!
    Nick

Since it is not possible to upgrade the RAM after purchase (it is soldered to the logicboard), I would definitely opt for 8GB. The same goes for the SSD- I would opt for double the storage. Though it is possible to upgrade your drive in the future, it comes at the cost of installing it yourself and potentially voiding any Apple warranty.
It would not be worthwhile to spend another 200$ on 16gb of RAM, IMO for your purposes. The lack of a discrete GPU and a duel core processor is what will limit gaming performance. 8GB of RAM is enough, in itself.
Rather than spending an additional $400 dollars, either spend the extra $200 for the 8gb 256GB model, or consider the 15'' entry level model for $700 extra dollars-which would be plently powerful enough for your purposes.

  • Possible to install a new SSD to a 13-inch macbook pro with retina display

I just bought a 13-inch macbook pro with retina display last week from apple. I want to make this macbook a protable workstation, so I upgraded the RAM to 16G. I also purchased an Samsung 1T SSD 840 EVO, which is suggested from most of the web, but when I took my laptop apart, the macbook is using a different SSD call PICe SSD, which is much smaller than a normal SSD.
Not sure if anyone has encountered the same issue? Is it possible to upgraded the SSD in this case or have to stuck with it?
    Thanks

    stevenwang480,
your 840 EVO can’t be installed in place of your PCIe SSD. In theory, you could upgrade your MacBook Pro’s PCIe SSD with another PCIe SSD, but the availability of third-party PCIe SSDs is nearly (if not actually) zero at this time. In the interim, you could put your 840 EVO into an external enclosure.

  • Apple MacBook Pro 13'' i7-2,9GHz | 8GB | 750GB (MD102) vs Apple MacBook Pro 13'' Retina i5-2,4GHz | 8GB | SSD 256GB (ME865)

Hey guys. I'm going to buy a macboock pro for the first time and I have 1500/1600€ to spend. I will need to use programs such as illustrator, photoshop, after effects, premier or final cut pro and 3d programs like blender (3d modelling and animation). I don't know wich of this two macs to pick (the price is the same for both, at least here in Portugal), so help me here.
    Apple MacBook Pro 13'' i7-2,9GHz | 8GB | 750GB (MD102) vs Apple MacBook Pro 13'' Retina i5-2,4GHz | 8GB | SSD 256GB (ME865)

If nor money, nor space are a constraint, I would go for the Retina model with the i7 processor and the largest available SSD. And 16Gb of RAM, of course...
I would never consider a computer with an i5 processor and just 256 GB of storage!
And the Retina machines cannot be upgraded later, so better to order it at full specs...
So, as the package is now fixed (Retina, i7, 16 GB RAM, 1Tb SSD), the only choice now is between a 13" or 15" model.
If, as you said, space is not a problem, then go for the 15".... If you prefer the 13" screen, you will get the most powerful 13-inch machine available...
In both cases you wll get the maximum currently possible.... That is the only sensible choice when money is not a constraint...

  • I have a macbook pro 15" Retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram yet when i try to download a HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD?

i have a macbook pro 15" retina Display with 2.6 ghz and 8gb of ram when i try to download an HD movie from itunes it says my computer doesn't support HD? i went to the support on the apple website and looked at the specs that a computer has to meet in order to play HD movies and mine is well above them. Why can't i play the movies?

That would at least partially explain it.
These MacBook Pros drew more power than the power brick could readily supply, and so would only run at top speed when the power brick was supplemented by the battery.
Though the applicable tech note has been removed, it stated:
"If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."

  • I'm a normal user, using cad programme, not using my laptop for games, my question is: do I need to get 16 gb ram in my retina macbook pro or 8  gb ram is pretty enough?

I'm a normal user, using cad programme, not using my laptop for games, my question is: do I need to get 16 gb ram in my retina macbook pro or 8  gb ram is pretty enough?
    Thanks for support.

8 GB may be sufficient for CAD but 16 would be a much better idea.
All the Macs I have ever owned were eventually upgraded to the maximum amount of memory they could use. Considering that as of now, the RAM you specify is all the RAM you will ever have, get as much as you can. That is the only way to maximize its economic life.
If Apple offered a 32 GB version I'd get it.

i have the macbook pro 13" retina display. Can I upgrade my 8gb ram to 16gb? my processor is 2.5Ghz intel core i5

To save space on the computer, Apple has decided to solder the memory onto the logic board on the MacBook Pro with Retina display and the MacBook Air, and that's why you can't add more memory after buying the Mac. This only applies to these computers, not for the other ones

  • The Macbook Pro without retina, can you add ram your self to it?

Will Ram be user replaceable for the macbook pro without retina?

The apple customer support told me that it is only possible to change the ram, but it is not possible to change the harddrive anymore, otherwise you will loose your warranty.
I first thougt it was a bad joke, but it isn´t guys. If you want another harddrive they do it for you for 150 bucks/hour…

I have a macbook pro non retina, and I wanna know, there is any problem if I take my computer turned on into my backpack actually is not a ssd disk thanks

it's fine if you leave it on.......i keep mine turned on while travelling with my macbook in my laptop bag and have had no issues.
if however, you plan on running around or jogging - it's better to turn it off.
but leaving it on will not hurt it.

  • HT1270 does installing aftermarket RAM into new macbook pro non-retina void apple warranty

does installing aftermarket RAM into new macbook pro non-retina void apple warranty

Only for the RAM which should be covered by the manufacturers/vendors warranty.  Now if you damage the MBP while installing the RAM then you may find yourself voiding the MBP warranty.  But ir does take a lot to do that.
    Ciao.
