Macbook Pro 13" screen fills with snow.

Any help would be appreciated here.
My wife's 13" Macbook Pro is experiences a curious problem. While she is working on it, the screen will just fill with snow. It looks like an old analog TV tuned in between channels. This is the LCD dispaly of the Macbook, not an external monitor. We've had the computer from new, and have yet to experience any problems.
It is an Intel I5, 2.3MHz, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 3000 graphics, 384MB, SATA HD, running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 on a 13" screen, resolution 1280x800.
She has to shut down the computer and re-start it to continue using it. Sometimes, she has to let it sit for a while in order to get it to restart. I'm thinking it could be an overheating issue in the chipset, or perhaps a memory or hard drive problem, but I'm not sure. When she last restarted, the system reported this message:

robertofrombc,
does your wife’s 13-inch Early 2011 MacBook Pro feel warmer than usual, or is its fan running more loudly than usual, when the screen starts displaying its snow?
If you still have the model-specific grey installation DVDs that originally came with this MacBook Pro, you could run the Apple Hardware Test that is on the one labelled “Applications Install DVD”, to see if its extended hardware test can detect anything amiss with the hardware.

I have a macbook pro and the software with snow leopard only has upgraded to 10.5.8, do I need to purchase mountain lion to upgrade to 10.6.8?

Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

  • MacBook Pro running Windows XP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When I got a MacBook Pro in 2006 I gave a small partition to my husband so he could log into his computer at the office. I used Boot Camp and an OEM WIndows XP disk. Everything ran smoothly for 5 years... last week he started having problems with windows and after doing some diagnostics and deletions we were able to get the system up and running.
I have recently gotten a newer MacBook Pro and decided I should wipe the old one clean, give him a larger partition and reinstall everything. SO... I downloaded lion wiped the drive clean and reinstalled system software. Opened up Boot Camp clicked download Windows support software got an error. After searching support found that Lion doesn't support XP... His company still uses XP and he's not that computer Savvy so it makes sense to keep him with what he's familiar with (plus who wants to buy another windosOS)... SO I decided to reinstall the original disk of Snow Leopard, re partitioned the drive loaded XP, used the Windows installer disk I originally made with the Boot Camp beta version I downloaded 5+ years ago and everything was hunky dory... till this morning when I logged on to his system to do further installs and it says that hardware changes had been made and that WIndows needed to be "reactivated" click here... so I do and find the internet connection was missing (?) Works fine on the mac so it's a windows issue.
So I put in the windows xp disk to see if I can reinstall the OS and get an error "no boot disc"... I just decided to start over but am wondering if I made a mistake using the "mac windows installers" disk I made years ago. I go on to support and tried to download a newer version  of the installers and it wants to give me an older version of Boot Camp.(am now thinking I might have had regular leopard when I first set up the initial partition/install for Windows)
I realize this is all long winded and maybe somewhat confusing. Bottom line is... I have a macbook pro that I need to install Windows XP on. Am I on the right track (planning to reinstall the XP disk but NOT repartition, etc.) Should I go back to Leopard? Should I erase the partition and start over? is there more updated Windows drivers I should be using??? SHould I bite the big one and buy Windows 7 and go forward from there?

Ok, that's what I have done... I have Snow Leopard Installed, 10.8.6 and it's got Boot Camp 3.0.4... my questionis the Mac Windows Install Drivers you add after installing Windows. Windows looks terribly awkward and I'm guessing it has something to do with the ATI graphics card sofware the mac disk installed. Is is ok to use the one I created years ago? I can't seem to find a place to create a new one using the 10.8.6 and 3.0.4.
When I orignially installed Boot Camp you had to create a disk using Boot Camp that you installed in Windows after the initial OS installation.

  • New Macbook Pro won't work with Snow Airport

I am trying to connect my new Macbook pro with an old airport snow.
The macbook can see the airport's network, but everytime I try and connect to it there's an error.
I can connect to the airport via the ethernet, but if I try to use the assistant for the snow/graphite models it says i don't have a airport card installed. Which I do.
Is it possible to connect my new macbook with this older airport. Or is my computer to new for this old wireless router?
    Any ideas??

Thanks for the input. Yes, I've driven the 23" with another Mac. I took the laptop back to the shop today. Hopefully they can resolve the issue.

  • New macbook pro should it come with snow leopard

i bought a macbook pro 2 days ago from a well known store called comet when i got it home though i noticed it never came with snow leopard should i get this free with the macbook or do i have to pay £7.50 and if so is it worth it

    Hi
I bought my MacBook Pro on the release date for Snow leopard at an Apple Store (Brighton, UK). This came with a Snow Leopard drop in Disc.
It looks like the one you picked up from Comet was old stock (not that old of course just shipped by Apple before the Snow Leopard release date), and it may well be that you will have to claim under the up to date programme.
I doubt very much that Apple will have supplied update discs for Comet to include at point of sale for Macs shipped prior to the release date of Snow Leopard. As far as I am aware Comet do not stock Snow Leopard as a separate product, so they are unlikely to be able to let you have a copy.
It is probably worth giving Apple customer services a call and see what they say, or go to an Apple store and ask, if you are close enough to one to make it viable. Take your receipt from Comet and explain nicely, you may get lucky and they will give you a copy.
If you do have to pay via the up to date scheme then I would say yes it is worth it. You won't see much difference, but you will be bang up to date for under £10.
    Good luck
    Paul

  • I cannot repair the HD even from the installation cd of a macbook pro (i have macbbook with Snow Leopard). Even more, i cannot reboot from the HD to export the cd etc... Can you please help?

    History:
Started with stucking. No sesponse to any attempt than force quit.
When i checked the disc, replied: nod fail, repair with installation cd. Sth like that.
I borrowed the installation disc of a macbook pro (i have macbook). I run the utilities to repair the disc 2 times. Failed. After i didn't know how to take out the cd. I had to force quit.
Then, at start, it takes 10-15 minutes with the Apple sign and a small silver bar, until it switch of by itself. I repeated the procedure 10 times totaly, the same!
Sime times, when i start from the installation cd ( i hold "c" at the start), it does'n "see" the hard drive to start up with.
Important detail: When i run the disc repair operation from the Disc Utility of the Installation cd, on the column of the volumes, the "HD Macintosh" characters are grey, whether others are normaly black.
Budget detail: i don't have money to buy products etc, so i count on your advises!!! I prepare a performance though, soon, and i can add the trademark of the sponsor, if somebody is interested... All the data in the computer are about this work, so i cannot risk to lose them.
    Thank you in advance!

It sounds as if your MacBook's hard drive is dead, or possibly dying. Replacement drives are fairly inexpensive. You'll need an install DVD like the one that came with the MacBook. Contact Apple via expresslane.apple.com to order a new set. Once you have the machine up and running, restore your data from your backups. If you don't have backups, contact a data recovery outfit to see what they can get off of your old hard drive.
    Backups are important!
    Best of luck.

  • Need to boot new macbook pro (yosemite 10.10) with an external drive (snow leopard 10.6.8)

need to boot a new macbook pro (yosemite 10.10) with an external drive (snow leopard 10.6.8). Toshiba canvio 1TB, USB 3.0. Have formatted it for mac already. Actually works when chosen as the "boot drive" on my 2009? macpro desktop with snow leopard 10.6.8. OS. I still need to work from FCP 7.0.3 as we have many projects from the past that must be "re-edited" from time to time. The macbook pro sees the drive from the systems preferences as a "boot drive" but nothing happens when it is selected. Have also tried from start up, holding option key until drives appear for boot. Will only go as far as the grey screen with apple logo when selecting external drive.

    Try using a virtual machine.

When I boot up the mac freshly it takes quite long to get to the initial login screen (which as I understand is a pre-boot login provided by the recovery partition if File Vault is enabled). However, what is even more bothering me is that once I get to this screen, the whole UI is behaving extremely slow. The mouse makes jumps of a few inches on the screen and the animations (e.g. if you click a user and then an animation shows the password entry field) are running in slow motion and only update every few seconds. Typing the password afterwards runs smothly again (altought for example moving the mouse at this point still behaves as described before). After loggin in to the account OS X runs fine without any hicks. Can anyone give me a hit what this could be and how I could resolve this?
    This has already been done:
    Reset PRAM
Boot into recovery partition and run repaired disk and disk permissions
Run all OS X maintenance operations and cleared caches using OnyX
What I could imagine is that somehow the recovery partition is damaged (which as I understand is used to boot to the login screen if File Vault is enabled).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris

Just ordered a Retina MacBook Pro11,2 (mid-2014 15", 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OSX 10.9.4 Pre-installed - Build 13E28)  and have the exact same issue.  The first thing I did when i booted it for the first time was enable FileValut2 and encrypt the disk.  Though I failed to notice this behavior prior to encrypting the disk, the stuttering/lag happens without fail every time I have logged in from a cold boot, locked screen or sleep. Additionally I have noticed the same stuttering behavior when switching tabs on various built-in OSX applications such as the tabs on the About This Mac > More Info.... (System Information) dialog for example, and similarly other dialogs that experience this behavior of resizing when switching tabs. I was running no other software than About This Mac > More Info ... (System Information) and OSX 10.9.4 itself.  The issue happens without fail with and without a USB mouse plugged in.
I am really glad to have found this thread and with such recent posts.  I'd love to find out that this is just a software bug that will be fixed when OSX 10.10 "Yosemite" is released.  If not, I hope the cause of this bug is determined soon so I can still exchange or have it repaired.
Migflono and Matthew, would you be able to post your hardware specs for comparison?

  • Macbook pro as [MacBook Pro Blank Screen ] with voided Warranty ?

I have the same issue as told in this post.
MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External)
However, I have manually replace my HDD to another. Since my HDD die before and want a bigger one. And I think my warranty have voided.
So does it include in the replacement program of the logic board with free of charge ?
Will apple help me do the replacement if I'm able to charge that fee even my warrany voided ?

It really doesn't make a bit of difference whether someone else had an experience similar to yours. It's still up to AppleCare to deal with it.
But you can certainly waste your time here for whatever you think you'll find. Good luck.

  • Can I use a macbook pro 2 screen with a macbook pro 3?

my girlfriends 2007 macbook pro 3 screen stopped working yesterday so we bought a 2006 macbook pro 2 off craigslist and found out that it wont run mavricks so I was wondering if the screens were backwards compatable, like if I use the screen from the 2 and put it on the 3?
They are both the same size 15"
    thank you

You might look at iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com and see if the two different MBP displays have the same part number.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro Retina screen black lines

    Hi everyone.
I have had my macbook pro retina since june 2013. I have had two strange experiences with the screen, all of a suddent after the screen went to sleep (on battery) and i turn it on again I get the screen filled with black and gray lines like this
and I cannot restore it to normal without turning it off and on again. I could take a screenshot though.
So I was wondering if you knew what it is due to and what should I do? My laptop is fairly new and I still have warranty.
It was purchased in New York but now I am in Copenhagen, Denmark.
We do not have a proper apple store, but some "Apple stores" which are affiliated with them and they normally ship them to Netherlands for repairing. Should I bring it in and get it fixed? Also I can do that here in DK too even though it was bought in New York right?
    Hope someone can help me.

Yes. Take it to the store and have it checked out.
    Best.

  • Installing Tiger on a Macbook Pro that came only with Leopard

    Hi guys,
Any ideas on how to install Tiger onto a Macbook Pro that came preloaded with Leopard, and only has a Leopard disc?
I've got a refurbished Macbook Pro recently. Realised that one of my application doesn't work, Capture One Pro. Visited Phase One's website and they said it only supports 3.9 and above at the time it was released, which makes it 10.4.10.
Systems in the story below: Macbook Pro Core Cuo. Macbook Pro C2D (new set), Mac Pro, iMac Core 2 Duo
    Here's what I've tried
    1. I've an original disk that came with my MBP CD. When I try to boot from that disk on my MBP C2D, it gives me the crash screen -> "please hold the power for secs to restart".
    2. I've tried installing Tiger onto my iMac and did a harddisk clone via Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to my MBP CD. Tiger was able to run on my MBP CD fine.
    3. Then I tried using CCC to clone it over to my MBP C2D. It doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
    4. I've tried installing Tiger on my Mac Pro. Used CCC to clone over the disk image to MBP C2D. Doesn't work too. Crash screen.
    5. Created disk images of Tiger with Disk Utility on iMac, Mac Pro. Tried to restore using the iMac, Mac Pro disk images of Tiger. Doesn't work. Shows me the crash screen.
    6. Updated Tiger to 10.4.11 on my Mac Pro. Created disk image using Disk Utility. Restored MBP C2D with it. Crash screen on load.
I'm out of ideas and Apple Support won't open until Monday.
It seems that this MBP C2D is set on not installing Tiger, no matter what. Wonder if getting hold of a Tiger retail disc will do the trick?

You can install tiger onto a MacBook Pro up to version 3,1.
Run System Profiler and under hardware:
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1 This line is the model number!
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B00
    SMC Version: 1.27f1
    Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXXX
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
I have got tiger installed onto this MacBookPro which is the latest 4,1 model, but you require the latest Tiger disk (which the Apple Genius had in my case), but the volume, brightness and trackpad gestures do not work! Everything else is fine.

Wow!  I think I had this same issue just last night.
I was cleaning my macbook pro retina on the outside.  Then I opened it up and was wiping dust off the monitor and I can't pinpoint exactly when, but the colors changed suddenly.  It looked super strange, it was like green halo's and it looked worse when looking at it at an angle.  Of course I took no pictures!!!  I was freaking out that my 2 grand laptop was busted and I somehow removed a protective film or something.
But I digress...  The image looked very green and spacey, it was almost a neat effect.  After about 5 minutes it started to look a little more digital though.  There were straight lines of this halo effect on the edges and top.  After about 10 minutes it turned into a predominate issue with the blacks on screen.  I could open a web browser and it was unnoticable on a white background.  After about 15 minutes, you could only barely see the green cloud effect if you looked at the monitor from an extreme angle.  After about 20 minutes, it was completely back to normal, I almost feel paranoid like I see a halo or something strange.  But I believe that might be all in my head now.
So yerp, lemme know what you guys figure out.
