MacBook Pro 13" vs MacBook Air 13"

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro 15” that I purchased nearly two years ago as a desktop replacement and which rarely leaves my house. I have been thinking about purchasing a 2nd MacBook to use for traveling purposes when I am out of town on business or on vacation. The question I have is does anybody know or have any thoughts on which of the following has better benchmarks or would be faster and more responsive---with upgraded specs the two would cost me almost the same--about $1500.00. A 2010 MacBook Air 13”1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2GB memory comes with a 128GB flash storage (Toshiba) and I would have Apple add 2 GB of Ram. Or, a 2010 MacBook Pro 13” 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB Memory and a 128GB SSD (Toshiba) which is available as an installed option by Apple for $350.00. Both SSDs are made by Toshiba for Apple although the one in the MacBook Pro is a standard SSD and the one in the MacBook Air is a flash drive. I have seen benchmarks for each of these machines on Andandtech and Macworld and other places but I have not been able to locate any results in which a MacBook Pro 13” with an Apple installed 128GB SSD was tested. I have seen plenty of benchmarks in various places with a third party SSD on a MacBook Pro such as OWC and others but none in which the Apple installed SSD was tested (and ideally compared to the current MacBook Air 13” with or without the extra ram). I was wondering if anyone has seen any data on this and/or if anyone has a MacBook Pro 13” with an Apple installed SSD or a new MacBook Air 13” and can relate their experience. Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

I'm not sure who that's directed at. While I roughly agree with some of your points I think there's more to it.

First off, the SSD is replaceable and not soldered though I would agree it is not 'easily replaceable' for your average home users. More importantly, the reasons that a user would even WANT to replace a SSD are slim to none. Most people replace their hard drives because they either want a faster one, more space, or it simply fails. SSDs are much MUCH faster than their spinning counterparts and have amazing life expectancy -- usually far longer than the user will actually hold on to the computer itself.
====
Slim to none? Hardly. 128Gb is simply not enough for me for my work or play. My MBP has a 240Gb SSD and a 1Tb SATA drive in it. The Air for me is a great travel buddy, it's not a great complete replacement. It would mean carrying around with me an Air & External storage. Cloud storage? Understand that for some stuff, but storing my DVD stuff in the cloud isn't feasible - the download times would be tiresome. I don't mean movies by the way, I mean DVD software images that I use a lot.
I totally agree with an SSD being years ahead in terms of performance. I'd never go back to a physical drive for OS & Apps. Reliability? Well, it's early days on that. See my article here: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2010/4/1SSD_Failures_More_thoughts_on_thetech.html
I use a lot of SSDs in the kit I have. My Mini has one, my MBP has one, my Air has one (obviously) as do my two windows machines. Completely sold on the tech. More reliable? That's not been my experience to date. They should be, I agree, and I expect reliability to get better, that's true, but they're not as infallible as you seem to indicate.
====
Optical drive? Are you serious? When is the last time you actually used a CD/DVD. To install Mac OS X? The new MBA comes with a USB stick containing Snow Leopard, iLife '11 (and iWork '09 if you purchase it with your Mac). You can still use a USB CD-ROM drive or even another Mac via Remote Disc. For the few times a year you use one, I am sure you can make due with other means. If not, get the Superdrive, it also is a DVD+DL burner.
====
Completely agree. Rarely use a DVD drive. As you can see from my notes, I replaced the DVD in my MBP with another hard disk.
====
Now for RAM, unless you do heavy Photoshop editing or the like, 4GB is more than enough. I was running World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 simultaneous in windowed mode and I didn't notice any issue switching between the two. Also, I run Parallels 6 with Win7 using 1280MB of RAM without a hitch. The 4GB amount is perfect for 99% of computing needs.
====
You're making a lot of assumptions about people's usage patterns. 4Gb is great for general operation. I survived with my main machine running 4Gb for years, before moving to 6Gb and then 8Gb. For my main work I can not use a machine with only 4Gb. It can't cope. My 8Gb machine can.
How did I cope before? Well, I had my laptop and another machine at home.... I'm not that far from that solution now with the Air & the MBP am I? Difference is the more powerful machine is mobile.
If you're an office type user who wants Office in OSX, maybe Photoshop, and you want to run Win7 & Office in Parallels/Fusion then yes, 4Gb is probably enough. If like me you're a tech architect who has documents that run into 4/500 pages including embedded Excel, Visio etc. then 4Gb just ain't enough. Never mind the stuff I have to do with server virtualisation. I can run about 8 VMs on my MBP, no way can the Air cope with that. I admit this is probably an unusual requirement.
====
Now flexible, I DEFINITELY disagree with. Everyone that uses an Air for more than a day wonders why in the world they used to carry such a bulky computer before. The Air does it all and for a fraction of the weight/size. I've owned one for about a month now and I'm still amazed at how capable of a computer it is and how fast it is.
====
Me too, I was astonished how well the Air performs considering it's specifications.
====
Needless to say, all my doubts quickly disappeared. The initial boot took a whopping 15 seconds into OS X. After that, it now takes about 8 seconds from powered off to get into OS X and it's completely responsive as soon as you see the dock. My friend was floored. How could a machine like that be seemingly faster than his MBP? How did they fit all this power in such a small computer?
====
Isn't that different from my SSD equipped MBP.
====
On paper, the MBP looks faster but in practice the MBA -feels- faster in every aspect. Windows appear instantly, boot times are amazing (5 second restart?), and it's all around just a dream. I've used computers for over 15 years and this is the fastest computer I've ever owned. It's that good.
====
It is a fast unit. It's as no way as fast and capable as my MBP. It just isn't. I can do more and faster on the MBP than I can on the Air. But here's the thing - a lot of it's down to what you're doing isn't it?
The Air for me is very much a second machine. I use it to go to meetings, when I'm travelling to site, I often use it for documentation. I'm off to Aus for a couple of weeks - the Air will be coming with me, not the MBP.
====
Don't underestimate the Air. I know the previous revisions have been underdogs, but this one is a real winner. Anyone that owns one will tell you the same story I have.
====
I completely agree. The only caveat I'd add is that you need to assess it against your requirements of course. I for one could not replace my day to day machine with one - it's not able to cope with the stuff that my MBP can do with ease.

    Addressbook synching would be through your iCloud account. It has nothing to do with Safari.

  • Should I buy a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air

    I am currently going into high school and have saved enough money to buy a macbook. However, I am debating to if i should buy a MacBook Pro or a Macbook Air. I would use the laptop for these things
    1. Basic Microsoft programs(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. for school)
    2. I will also be Parallels on my mac
    3. Light amount of gaming (League of Legends)
    4. Websurfing/Research ( usually with an abundance of pages open)
    5. Studying ( as any student would do)
    6. Video Watching
    7. Music
    I am willing to upgrade the internals of the macbook but have a budget of about 1,250 dollars. Advice about which laptop to pick as well as what upgrades may need to be made for the internals will extremely help. Thank you

    In addition to what Japib wrote
    You might be able to shave $50 or so via education pricing at online Apple Store
    Parallels has education pricing, ditto MS Office. Your school (district) might have some education prices for software.

    A basic MBA will be more than adequate.  Take into consideration that storage may be a long term issue unless you are not averse to traveling with an external HDD.
    Ciao.

  • What would be a better choice between a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air?

    I will be starting college next fall as a neuroscience major and I am torn between purchasing a MacBook Pro vs. a MacBook Air. Which would be a better choice considering I would be using it to take notes, creating documents, presentations etc.? I am not a person involved in heavy gaming, or major creative things. Just simple stuff but I do however spend countless hours doing research. Help!

    Personally the Airs have no appeal for me. Limited hard drive space (actuall no hard drive, it is all flash storage space) which can not be upgraded.
    Airs are to small unless you get the 13" model and for that money you can get a nice 13" MBP or even a 15" model.
    For me an Air would be a second or third computer but not my only computer.

  • MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air - which is better for a high school student? Tips/suggestions?? Thanks

    I can't decide if I want to purchase the MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air for my high schooler. It has to have multiple life purposes such as social networking, webcam, word processing etc.  I am probably buying a refurbished laptop from this website. Any other tips are appreciated!

    Remember: the MacBook Air does not have an optical drive, so you can't use CD's or DVD's. However, if you do not plan on using the computer for gaming, video editing, or large-file storing go with the Air, as it is much less expensive, but just as fast and responsive as the MacBook Pro. Not to mention that it's $200 cheaper.

    Light weight basic needs, power miser - MacBook Air (glossy screens)
    Semi-light weight basic needs, more storage, DVD drive, hot machine (no 3D gaming) - 13" MacBook Pro (glossy screens)
    Bit heavier, pro needs, 3D gaming, cool machine, power hungry, - 15" MacBook Pro  (anti-glare screen option, recommended)
    Same as above, larger screen for HD video, cool machine,  power hungry, 17" MacBook Pro (anti-glare screen option, recommended)

  • Do I go with the MacBook pro or the MacBook air? I'm going into 8th grade and were required to have labtop. I Also edit videos for my YouTube chanel. Which should I get 13 inch model.

    MacBook Air: thin, light, fast SSD storage. Cons: not upgradable, expensive.
    MacBook Pro: cheaper, upgradable, better graphics card, more storage and RAM for the buck.  Cons: not as light
    you'll get more for the money with the MacBook Pro. the Air is better as a second computer for people.

  • For Macbook pro Retina and Macbook Air Users Please Help

    Hi
    i Want Ask Macbook pro Retina and Macbook Air Users how use this macs both ( Only how use  both )
    we sit many hours on laptop that will hurt our eyes
    what the macbook less strain on eyes
    what the best macbook screen not hurt our eyes
    sorry my english is not good but i hope you understand me
    i want only users how use the both of this macs
    thank you

    People are different.  Not everyone experiences eye strain with an LED/LCD screen, or with a retina screen or any other kind of screen.  Some people do.
    So no one here can possibly say how you will feel using either one - everyone is different.
    You need to find some display models or something and try them yourself and see what you like and how you feel using them.  Anything anyone here has experienced is immaterial - all that matters is what you expereince and we cannot predict that for you.
    I stare at computer screens all day long, and have done so for many, many years now.  I've never had a problem with matte LCD, glossy LCD (like my MBP), CRT, plasma or page white.  About the only problem I've ever had is occasionally dry eye, since everyone tends to blink less when concentrating on anything backlit for long periods of time.  Simple artificial tears deals with that, and just learning to stagger regular breaks.

    Hi
    I have started migration système to transfert from hold Macbook pro to New MacBook air
    Application starter successfully for several hours.
    But since more than 3 hours I got the message "transferring Time zone paramètres " with time left less than 1 minute.
    Any recommendation or suggestion to solve it ?
    Many tanks

    If it has run for 3 hours it's probably done and you can quit Migration Assistant and reboot the new computer. In the future rather than using Migration Assistant I would recommend using Startup Assistant which tends to be a bit more reliable and does not create a new user account as MA does. If  you're interested here is an article explaining Setup Assistant tips.

  • Macbook Pro 2012 or Macbook Air 2013

    Hello,
    I looking to buy a Apple Laptop but really confused to which one to get Macbook Pro 2012 or Macbook Air 2012. Here are is what I do:
    Web Development (PHP, Python Django, Node.js, Tornado)
    Photoshop (4 times in 10 uses)
    Illustrator (1 time in 10 uses)
    Web surfing
    Need a good backup time (min of 3hrs)
    Want a good performance
    Will have it for 4 years

    Photoshop (4 times in 10 uses)
    Illustrator (1 time in 10 uses)
    When you use these, you'll be thankful you got a Pro.
    Web development
    Web surfing
    Both are about equal.  Some game performance may be better on a Pro, especially if it uses the graphics chip.
    Need a good backup time (min of 3hrs)
    Don't you mean max?  A lot is dependent on how much data you have to backup and whether you choose to clone or use Time Machine.  Clones are faster the second go around.  Time Machine can be fast, but if you use it for archival, you'll be spending time turning off Time Machine, and archiving necessary to keep archives off the Time Machine drive.  And Time Machine needs at least twice the capacity of your original, where clones only need the original.
    Want a good performance
    Pro is invariably better performance than Air.
    Will have it for 4 years
    Both only get a warranty up to three years if purchased within the first year from date of computer purchase.
    http://www.safeware.com/ offers insurance, but not warranty.
    Some credit card companies extend manufacturer warranty.  Check if yours does.

  • How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

    How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

    MacBook Pro - no problem, it is an extremely popular computer for running that software. Just look at the Adobe demo videos of their products, most of the time you can see a MacBook Pro running the software in their video.
    MacBook Air - should be just as good most of the time.
    However, if you get involved in heavy Photoshop work like highly stacked layers/masks/channels, 16 bits per channel or up, or merging HDR or panoramas, the MacBook Pro may be better because it can take 16GB RAM while the MacBook Air can take only 8GB RAM.
    Also, if you are going to do serious programming in XCode or Dreamweaver, you may find the MacBook Air screen to be too small for all of the code windows and tool palettes that you may want to open and arrange in those programs. The 15" Retina screen of the MacBook Pro will let you spread out your work and do less window switching. The 11/"13" MacBook Air screens are both smaller and non-Retina so not as sharp.
    Even Photoshop is nicer on the 15" MacBook Pro because of the extra screen space for the image with less intrusion by the tool palettes.
    In short, if you are a casual user the MacBook Air will be great. If you are a professional with a heavy workload the MacBook Pro may be more efficient overall due to the larger screen and higher RAM capacity.

  • What Makes the MacBook Pro better then MacBook Air?

    What Makes the MacBook Pro better then MacBook Air?
    I am considering getting a laptop of one of the 2.
    I think Macbook pro is what i want as just a secondary computer, need a laptop that performs same as my desktop IMac
    What are really the differences between the Pro and Air?
    What Pro is best?
    Anyone have problems? and am i best with paying for a brand new computer vs refurb?
    thanks

    It really depends what you use it for.
    I'm in my senior years in high school and I just bought my macbook pro (15 in - $1799 w/out tax). I'm willing to spend the extra money as I am planning to use it to continue my education in post secondary school. I think that the MBP is great for work, designing and for professionals. The MBA is great for portability and chicness. The graphics on the MBP is beyond my expectations and it's great. Its great for many things.
    It all comes to this. Are you willing to spend the extra money on a MBP. What will you be using your computer for? WIll you be using it for a very long time? Are you going to be careful with it? I heard that the MBA is flimsy and can easily break.
    I also recommend you ask a person at the Genius Bar at your local Apple store and they will be glad to assist you. I researched for a solid half of a year before i made a decision and bought my macbook pro.
    Hope this helps.
