Macbook pro 13in back case clicking noise when flexed? (late 2013)

Yesterday I noticed that when I put a moderate (but by no means excessive) amount of pressure on the back of the case in certain areas with my thumb, there is a very audible clicking noise produced when the pressure is released. You can also feel resistance or a change in flex which to me, feels as though the case comes in contact with something on the inside of the computer, although I really can't be sure. It feels almost sticky when the pressure is released and the sound happens. What I'm wondering is, has anyone else experienced this, and if so was anything actually wrong, did it lead to issues etc. or is it just how the case sits. I looked at a display model of 13in late 2013 retina and it did not have this sound or feeling that I could tell (but still had similar flex). The 15 in late 2013 was much sturdier than the display 13 in retina and the old 13in without the retina screen felt like a solid piece of metal in comparison to my laptop. Here's a picture of the areas I can hear the sound when pressed
It's not really the flex I'm concerned with, I am aware that flex happens when you have thin pieces of aluminum. This weird feeling and sound just don't seem normal to me. Please if you have a late 2013 13in retina, let me know if you hear or feel anything when you press here!

Hi f,
I know you're looking for someone with the same model MBP as you have; sorry, I don't have one, but I'd like to point out a couple of things.
You already know that not all of them make that noise, as you've tested a display model. Because of that, I would definitely bring my MBP into an Apple Store and have them look at it. If you're still within 14 days of purchase, you may even want to consider a return and get a new one.
Another point: if there is something amiss with your MBP, continuing to make it "click" could be causing harm, and I would stop doing it immediately, tempting as it may be. ;-)
If the clicking is caused by picking up your MBP with one hand, use two hands to pick it up. As you've noticed, the case is rather "flexy;" this flex, exacerbated by picking it up with one hand, has caused internal hardware problems with MBPs and PBs in the past. If memory serves me, they used to put it in the owners manual; if they don't anymore, I think they should. Two hands.

  • Macbook pro makes a lot of noise when its is on.

Macbook Pro makes a lot of noise when its being used. It is the sound of the processor and it gets very hot at the bottom of the laptop. Any sugestions for why this is happening? Any solutions??

    Hi p,
The CPU doesn't make noise, so it's probably fans you're hearing, which would correspond with the heat you're feeling. Read this link to see if there's a process running too high:

  • Macbook Pro is making a clicking noise

About 2 days ago my Macbook Pro started making a periodical clicking noise. Every 15-20 minutes my laptop makes a clicking noise that comes from the right side of the laptop. It almost sounds like the CD drive is trying to open, but I cleaned the opening for it and there was nothing in the way. Does anyone know what it might be?

Imagine the needle on a record player - as it travels across the LP, the needle is picking up information from the LP, which is then transmitted to you via stereo.
Now, visualize that there is a problem with that platter (record), and the needle runs across it back and forth over and over, trying to find data or information. As it hits the inside, it makes a "clicking" sound.
This is an example of what is happening inside your computer when a hard drive begins to fail.  When you start to hear something like this, and you don't have a logical reason for it, assume that your hard drive is going to crash completely - Priority #1 is to do a complete backup of your system and/or important data so, if the drive *does* fail, you don't lose it all.
Approach it with suspicion in the next few weeks, and note if there are certain conditions when it happens.  Tech support would then be able to help you more effectively.  Good luck!

  • Late-2011 MacBook Pro 13" Freezes with Clicking Noise

    Hi guys,
I bought a MacBook Pro for my birthday in April earlier this year (the model is the Late 2011 i5 13 inch model). Recently I have been encountering a problem where randomly a clicking noise will start and repeat every 5 or so seconds. On top of this, the laptop completely freezes, with the spinning beachball, however I am still able to move the mouse around. The only way to get the clicking to stop and to restore functionality is to force shut down the computer by holding the power button, which presents the problem of potential work loss.
I have searched the internet for people who are having similar problems and have come across some others who seem like they have the same problem, but I cannot be sure. Could this mean that my hard drive is failing? I'm certain that it's not the SuperDrive as I am still able to insert DVDs and hear the drive spin up and the laser assembly move while the clicking is going on. In the absence of other mechanical components in the computer (besides the fan), and with the freezing, I assume that the noise is coming from the HDD.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen to them? And on top of that, is it worth taking it to a Genius Bar? As I do not have a way to reproduce the problem (it occurs at random with no obvious trigger), do you think they will be able to do anything, or am I on my own?
Sorry for being a stereotypical 'register-only-for-help' person, but I rely on this MacBook for my college work and cannot afford for it to be broken.
I hope you guys can give me advice.

Okay, I'll backup my files and take it to the Apple store. Thanks for the help.

I left my macbook last night with the screen up and without the charger
this morning the screen would not turn on, I have been charging it all day still nothing
I called apple I tried all the steps,
holding down the Left SHIFT+CONTROL+APPLE+POWER the charging light goes from orange to green and back to orange
To my understanding this is supposed to do some reset? I have tried turning it on in all types of situations
there is also a clicking sort of revving noise constantly coming from the macbook only when the charger is plugged in and disappears on removing the cable
    it's a 15" A1398 model with retina
PLEASE don't tell me to take it to apple I am no where near an apple store
I am a med student and have my USMLE exam next week I am freaking out as half my files are available online the other half are not
all repairs I'll have to do myself, is it a hard drive problem? is there a difference in the types of hard drives I use for my Mac?
    Best place to buy them?
Please help me out ASAP, and remember med students are all in 6 figure debt
    Thanks
PS: also running the latest update 10.9 if it makes a difference

Diagnostic testing is free at Apple store. But you have to pay for the repair.

  • Superdrive making clicking noise when my Macbook Pro is lifted

    Hello all,
I recently had my New 13.3 in. Macbook Pro displayed replaced and now when I lift the Macbook, the superdrive makes a clicking noise similar to the sound when a dvd-rom can't read a disc. There is no dvd in the drive during this time. I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem with their Macbook Pro.
I have another question, when I received my macbook with the replaced display, the display had several patches of dirt and an line scratch underneath the screen. Will apple replace the screen for me again or is it possible to have the entire macbook replaced? This is very frustrating to have to send in my brand new macbook for repairs twice in one month...
Thank you advance for your help.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make clicking noises when pressure is applied to the unibody?

I purchased a MacBook Pro in late July of this year. Recently, I have noticed that when I begin to type on the keyboard, the unibody will make a faint sound when pressure from my hands is applied to the MacBook. I also notice a faint clicking noise when I pick up the MacBook Pro to move it somewhere. Additionally, the screen hinge makes a faint clicking noise when the screen is opened. Are these sounds normal?

Check if an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) is closer, as some do not trust Geek Squad to diagnose something as simple as "all the keys are missing". But judge for yourself.: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434

  • MacBook Pro. Was Streaming radio. When came back to computer it appeared to have shut off. Now can't get it to respond in any way.

MacBook Pro. Was Streaming radio. When came back to computer it appeared to have shut off. Now can't get it to respond in any way. Now that you can't remove the battery, I don't know how to get it to quit, although it doesn't appear to be making any noise, so might have quit on it's own.  Any ideas? Thanks!

I honestly don't remember what it came with though I do remember having two drives so long ago.  Since then I've had to replace them with newer, faster ones, and just didn't really need a second drive.  I don't copy cds, I just need something to read DVDS (which the current one doesn't seem to want to do) and occasionally burn something.
I bought the MacPro becuase I am a tireless multitasker, having super memory eating programs on at all times.  Right now I am working in Photoshop while watching a movie, with two P2P programs open, two chat programs and surfing the internet, with two monitors active so I can see everything.. I can't imagine the average pc doing this wthout blowing up   Mac Pros are the ultimate computer for those that like to do a lot at once.
The speed and memory capacity of the Mac Pro make it the best computer hands down to handle a mind that can't be satisfied with doing just one thing at a time!
And six years after buying it, it can still eat the average pc for breakfast  How's that for great?

Time Machine on Macbook Pro and iMac both running 10.7.4 don't  react the same. Macbook Pro runs back every hour even if asleep, and iMac only when it's awake. Why?

I thought the backup whilst asleep was only used on Mountain Lion.. but perhaps it was also introduced with Lion.. anyway it is only enabled on later firmware.. in latest laptops.

  • Small clicking noise when moving

hello, ive only got the new macbook pro 13 the other day. when i slightly move the machine, it makes a small clicking noise (when its running with lid open), but it doesn't every time, like 3 out of 10 times. and i dont mean moving as in taking it into a different room, i mean like a slight move if i need to stretch or a wobble of my body with the macbook. any advice pls? thanks

My 2.53ghz 13" macbook pro is doing the same thing. This is odd because the 13" unibody macbook I had before this also has SMS and it never did this. If it is the SMS sensor, it is kicking in for very slight movements.
Could it be the SMS sensor is a little too sensitive? If so, is this something I should be concerned about?

  • Little clicking noise when computer picked up or moved.

is it normal that my macbook pro 13 makes a little clicking noise when moved suddenly or picked up ? it sounds like the optical or hard drive to me.

    Hi nomadikpat,
Your machine has an SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) that is designed to park the drive head inside your hard drive when the machine receives a quick and sudden external force. This safety feature is designed to preserve the HD so that a mechanical failure doesn't potentially cause data loss.

You could just try changing your Input Sources under System Preferences>Language & Text:
But I kind of doubt that's going to work. It may be a hardware problem or a system problem. If you take it into Apple they might be able to determine which and might advise a reinstallation of System software. I would take it to an Apple Store or an AASP but, first, make sure that you have a backup just in case they suggest a clean install of the system.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook Pro 13in 2011 Boot up

    Hello,
So, for some reason whenever I turn my Macbook Pro 13in 2011 on, the normal white screen appears with the Apple logo and the little loading wheel, but this time a gray bar appears loading on the bottom of the wheel, could someone please explain what is happening, this is making my laptop load up very slowly. I'm scared I might lose everything.
Thanks, please get back to me,
    IMAC2296

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.
