MacBook Pro 13in Rattle

I just got a brand new MacBook Pro 13in about a month ago, and this weekend it developed a rattling noise. I'm not positive if it is the hard drive or the fan, but I suspect it is the fan. The noise seems to be coming from the upper left side of the keyboard.
Is there something I can do about this? Would this be covered under AppleCare? The local genius bar is pretty noisy, I doubt the noise could even be heard in there.

I've been planning on going to the Apple store to talk with the Genius, but I haven't gotten around to doing it. I'll try to go in the next few days.
My main concern is that the rattling is not going to be noticeable in the store, but I will keep you updated on how the situation turns out.

  • Macbook Pro 13in 2011 Boot up

    Hello,
So, for some reason whenever I turn my Macbook Pro 13in 2011 on, the normal white screen appears with the Apple logo and the little loading wheel, but this time a gray bar appears loading on the bottom of the wheel, could someone please explain what is happening, this is making my laptop load up very slowly. I'm scared I might lose everything.
Thanks, please get back to me,

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

Open the Users folder on the internal drive, drag all of the other home folders to the desktop, and then move the files inside to the desired locations.

Have you opened Disk utility and formatted it?  Most new HDDs come formatted for Windows, not Mac.

  • Replacement hard drive on Macbook Pro 13in early 2011 advice needed!

    Hi!
I am replacing the hard drive in my MacBook Pro 13in from early 2011. The choices I can afford are either the Seagate 500GB 7200 rpm or the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB 5400rpm drive. I heard that the faster spinning drive causes reduced battery life and more noise. Is this true? Which one would you all suggest I choose?
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
I am using the same model with upgraded RAM. I am also changing my hard drive to a SSD which can't be compared to a spinning drive. The best choice would be getting a SSD, however, if you have to choose between those two you listed, I would go with Seagate. Not only because it is affordable, but also most of manufactured laptops have that brand. About the battery life and more noise, that statement is "true", but it is not noticeable. I mean, faster spinning will consume more battery than slower spinning of course, but it will not effect your battery life significantly. Because it is spinning faster, it will have faster read/write ability than 5400 rpm HDDs. Overall, it really depends on how much budget you got. A 128 GB or 256 GB SSD would be affordable with a fantastic ability to do many tasks.
    I hope it helped you.

  • MacBook Pro 13in(Retina)with only 8G

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 13in(Retina)with only 8G-any recommendations of how to get more memory?  (I can't even load a basic desktop pub. program like Printshop)

I think you're confusing RAM with storage. Even the base model MBPr has 128GB of flash storage. The 8gb of ram is temporary storage that your mac uses for the operating system and applications. What exactly do you mean that you can't load even basic programs?

  • 2012 Macbook Pro 13in 2.9GHz vs 2011 October 15in quad core refurb

This fall I will be a freshman at my college and I have decided that I am going to invest in a macbook pro. Right now I could buy 2012 13in with 8gb of ram for $1399 or I could purchase the refurb for $1359. My question is which one will benefit me more in the long run? Is 15in to bulky and heavy to take to college? If i chose the refurb would I be able to count on it for years to come? Will it last longer than the 2012 13in. If I got the 15in I would probably upgrade to 8gb of ram. I would be missing out on USB 3.0 if I chose the refurb though. Is this a deal breaker? I'm planning on getting into Economics and my college pretty much endorses Macs so that won't be a problem. Otherwise, I will probably just be doing normal things on my computer like watching videos, surfing the web, typing papers, downloading music and the occasional playing of flash games on the internet. I just want to make sure that I can get a computer that will last me at least 4 years and hopefully more. Any suggestions and thoughts would be very helpful!

I would go a different route.....
I would buy the the 15' Quad Core.
Regardless of which one you decide to purchase, they would last for years if proper care is used.
The 2.9GHz is a fast machine.  No doubt about that one.  It is however, in the end, only a dual core.
Let say you decide to do some number crunching, the dual core will run out of steam before the quad core does.
Or you decide to use photoshop, the dual core will do the job but the quad will do it efficiently because of it's quad core design, the processing is done by all four cores thus finishing faster.
And when it comes with your occasional games, the 15' has it's own discreet graphics to process the videos while the 13' has to rely on the processor to drive the built in intel video.  So the processor will be working harder on the 13' which will make your MB run a little on the hot side.

  • MacBook Pro' 13in & i5/i7

Does anyone know out there if Apple are considering putting either the i5 or the i7 into the 13in.
Just might wait if yes is the answer !!!
    Steve

Only the tech designers and top brass at Apple know the answer to your question.
I've read a number of articles which claim different reasons why Apple chose not to go with the Intel Core i in the 13", some of which make sense others less so.
The benchmarks I've seen for the Core i3 running @ 2.16GHz are pretty much on par with the 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo used in the base model 13" MBP (the core i3 doesn't have Turbo Boost).
The problem as I see it, is with Intel's requirement to use the Intel HD GPU, which by all accounts /reviews provides poorer performance than the old nVidia 9400 chipset. To use the Core i in the 13", Apple would have to either accept poorer single GPU performance (compared to the previous version) or opt for an onboard and a dedicated GPU (2 Graphics cards like on the 15 & 17 MBPs). The 13" chassis is quite compact so fitting 2 GPUs in the 13" would be complex (but possible perhaps by sacrificing the space taken up by the optical drive) and 2 GPUs would increase the cost of manufacture (which in turn would lead to higher retail prices).
I have an i5 based iMac for grunt work and opted for the 13" 2.4GHz with the Core 2 Duo. Do I regret my purchase? Not at all. This is still a very capable little machine, compact enough to carry around all day with excellent battery life.
It does exactly what I want it to do when I want t to do it.
I have finally found a suitable replacement for my very first 12" PowerBook G4 (which until now has been my favourite notebook). I'm really pleased with what Apple have done with the 2010 MacBook Pro. I love using this little machine.

  • Macbook pro 13in vs 15in

I'm thinking buy macbook 13in or 15in... I never had macbook so I have no idea :( Please help me!
I heard that MBP 13in have same display thing like Macbook air does, so people recommended me to get MBP 15in...
But when I saw tech spec, they all have same display! That intel 4000... So i'm wondering when new macbook pro came out, they all changed into same graphic display? If it's same thing, then i'm thinking just get 13in... because i heard 15in is heavy.
And I'm going to use adobe program such as photoshop, illustrator, lightroom... Like that.
What do you recommend for hard drive?

The Intel graphics chip that is integrated into the CPU is common to the 2 systems.  It shares memory with the system.
The 15 in has a second graphics chip that is more powerful, and it has its own dedicated RAM.
The 15 in is heavier than the 13 in, but the 15 in is still lighter than the 14 in HP laptop I have for work.
For harddrive, I recommend buying the default harddrive.  You can buy a new one of larger size for less money at macsales.com and install it yourself.
What you WILL want to ay for is what you cannot upgrade yourself later:  high-resolution (1680x1050) and anti-glare screen, or faster CPU (not worth the upgrade to faster CPU unless you need the better dedicated graphics card that comes with it).
But you need to go to an Apple Store and try out both for weight and screen size.  Only you know if the extra weight is worth the extra graphics processing power.
For the record, I have a 15 in 2.0 GHz quad-core i7, anti-glare screen, hi-res screen (1680x1050).  Default RAM purchased and I upgraded 4 GB to 8 GB.  I will change the HD later.   Still lighter than a 14 in HP laptop.

  • MacBook Pro speaker rattle

    Hey guys.
My MacBook Pro is about 13 months old now, and just recently i have noticed rattling in the right speaker. This mainly happens on high pitched sounds like a piano being played in a song.
My MacBook Pro is the early 2011 model.
I'm now out of warranty so was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences or advice?
    Thanks in advance
    Jack

I have had similair issues. I solved mine by messing with the audio output settings. You can try going to System Preferences>Sound>Output and adjusting the balance and output volume.
Example- My right speaker is broken, I do thishope this helps,

  • Upgrading Macbook Pro 13in Hard Drive

I have looked up many forum posts about this topic but I am still confused as my specific problem is not solved. I have seen how to replace the HDD, but i don't know which to get, I watched a video that directed me to a link that says compatible 2.5" Hard Drives and SSD, but im not sure which to pick, and which will work.
This link is the SSD that caught my eye, it's a hybrid but honestly, I don't know which to get, SSD or Hard Drive, I don't really care about the speed, or noise, I just want the one that would work with no hassles.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/MQ01ABD100HM/
In Buying a new HDD/SSD for a macbook pro mid 2009 13in model, what are the specs of the drive that I should get. On some sites, I see toshiba and crucial, there are some that say desktop and notebook.
What should I be taking into consideration when upgrading? I don't want to end up buying a drive that isn't compatible and have to return it.

You can pretty much buy any 2.5" SATA-II or III HDD or SSD. You will find you get more capacity in an HDD versus higher speed with the SSD. From what you have written I'd say you should stick to an HDD. Good options include Hitachi, Seagate, and Toshiba. You haven't stipulated what capacity you want in your new drive, but the maximum for the notebook drive is now around 1.5 TB (a Hitachi model.) I would not get a hybrid as they tend to be iffy in older model computers. The Seagate 500 GB hybrid is no longer in production and is hard to find, but the best model for your computer, although you may have success with the 750 GB model.

  • My MacBook Pro 13in Mid-2010 won't start unless I hold the power button for about 10 seconds! Help Please!

    Hello.
    I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch (mid-2010):
Processor: 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
    Running Mac OS X 10.7.2
Yesterday I opened my computer (was sleeping as usual) and the screen just flasehed white and the computer powered off. The magnetic electricity thingy was connected and was green, so it was fully charged, and connected to the electricity.
Since it powered off, I tried turning it on again, and again, one second after starting to boot up, screen flashed white and the computer powered off.
I read somewhere I should hold down the power button longer, so I did, and it booted up. That's why I am able to write this. But every time I turn it off or put it to sleep, it does the same thing when I boot up.
If I don't hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, the computer won't work.
Then today, I did a backup of my entie hard drive, just in case. Later, I started using Excel, and about 1 hour after I was on it, suddenly it got really slow. Like I would click on a program like Safari, and it would take over 30-45 secs to start and be ready. And my computer is usually really fast!
I went on the Internet again, started in safe mode, boot up with option+command+P+R to reset PRAM, and nothing worked. Then suddenly on one turn-off/turn-on (since I can't restart because the computer only starts if I hold the power button for 10 seconds), again it is working at normal speed.
What can this be? Any ideas?
I really appreciate your time and help in advance
    Gaby

I forgot to say I had already tried that as well. Just in case, I just tried it again and there was no change :S
Are you running the Apple-supplied RAM? Have you run Apple Hardware Test? I don't know what else you've tried, but this may be time to do a fresh install of Lion if you have not done so since installing Lion.

You can't do anything but file a huge complaint with Apple and join the chorus.
    https://macmatte.wordpress.com/
I've already contacted Steve jobs about this issue long ago and we got the anti-glare MacBook Pro's back and the new iMac's have 75% reduced glare, but that's the last I've heard about it and it's not enough really.
There is about 1% glare glass, but the technology can't be exported to China where Apple makes it's stuff as it's a trade/military secret.
Last I heard Apple is going to start making Mac's in Texas, which would allow anti-glare touchscreen glass to be a possibility in future Mac's.
So keep sending those emails to Cupertino is all I can say.
