MacBook Pro 15' 2.8GHz 2009 not charging battery.

Hi there!
This problem just came out of no where!
My battery doesn't charge anymore. Also the date gets back to 2001 every time the MBP powers up.
I tried to re set the SMC and nothing happened. After released all keys and power the MBP the Magsafe didn't change colour as described.
Another note: the instructions don't say the time that you actually have to hold the keys down for?
How long do you have to wait before powering up your MBP etc. Nt very specific.
Anyway, The battery information says that Battery is "Not Charging" on the System Profiler and the drop down menu on the top right battery icon. My MBP is still under warranty but I don't usually panic before go to the Mac Shop and get help. "It takes a long time to get help by a genius in Melbourne, even if you book a time" Poor guys they don't stop.
I cleaned all the surfaces of the Magsafe and MBP and I also have a second MBP and used the other Magsafe with the same issue.
On the System Profiler info the battery seems to be Ok with just one cycle.
Any help will be very appreciated.
Cheers

The other way around is the same. I tried "detect display", nothing happens. Nothing showing another display at all.
If it was a defective cable then I would NOT get a replacement because I just don't want the hassle of working on it and the problem will be the same.
Most likely to mail it back to get cash back.
Umm, to add, I am running 10.6.4 and have NOT yet upgrade it to 10.6.5. I still don't think that'll solve the problem.
Any ideas?

My MacBook Pro tells me it's not charging when I connect the charger.  Right now it's reading it, but other times it does not.  What do I do?

Initiating a charge cycle is a costly and disruptive operation. It is only started when the benefit to battery life exceeds the cost to battery life of a charge operation. That is usually when the battery falls below 90 percent charged.

  • Macbook Pro Mid-2010 15" is not charging with dim green light

    Hi all,
I have spilled a bit of water on the keyboard of my Macbook Pro this Monday. It continued working just fine.
So, I took it home, and 2h later, when I pluged the charger in, the light turned into a very faint/dim green light and it was not charging anymore. It does not consumes battery power, because it's plugged in the outlet, but it does not charge either (says "not charging").
    I have tried the following:
Plugging it in to a different outlet
    Trying other MagSafe chargers
Making sure it's the correct charger (85w)
    Resetting SMC
    Resetting NVRAM
I have opened the back, and although I could not dismount it anymore because the lack of appropriate screwdrivers, I could find no sign of humidity or water damage.
Checking the system information page in the MacOS, I could notice that, when the charger is plugged, amperage information gradually progresses from ~ -2000 to 0.
And it does not seem to recognize the charger. See below:
    AC Charger Information:
    Connected:     Yes
    ID:     0x0000
    Wattage (W):     0
    Revision:     0x0000
    Family:     0x0000
    Serial Number:     0x00000000
    Charging:     No
Do you guys have any other suggestions?

If you are lucky, the power adapter is faulty.  I suspect that there are problems inside the MBP.  I still advocate a trip to an Apple store genius bar.  Your MBP has a hardware issue and they (Apple) can diagnose it and tell you exactly what will be required to repair it.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook pro model 5.5 2009 not downloading Yosemite?

From everything I've read, I should be able to install Yosemite on my 2009 Macbook pro, but after several attempts to download from the App store (and waiting several hours each time) it doesn't seem to be working. The icon on the dock says downloading, then "waiting" but nothing happens. Any suggestions?

The root cause of the problem is the OS according to SSD manufacturer OCZ.

  • MacBook Pro using power adapter but not charging.

My MacBook Pro is plugged in w/the power adapter, the green charging light is on, but my battery percentage is only showing 15% and is not increasing.  It was actually at 60% this afternoon...went to 22% and now is @ 15%.

Could be bad battery or faulty charger or faulty charging circuitry. Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

I installed the new one, the MacBook did not recognize it. I thought it needed to charge, but the green light on the power cord came on, so I didn't think that was the problem. In the status bar, the battery shows up with an X in it, and no percentage will display.

  • MacBook Pro shuts down and won't charge, battery light on the side is off completely?

    Hey guys,
So about 20 minutes ago, I walked over to my macbook pro ('17) to plug in my phone charger. The top was already open, so I didn't have to pull it up. I clicked the touchpad to turn it on, and it turned on for literally half a second, and turned black with a bit of a static noise I believe. As if it blew a fuse.
So I look on the side of the computer where you can press that little button and a bunch of lights will turn on according to battery life, and nothing. Not one light turned on. I got this computer fixed a month ago with a replaced battery, screen, graphics card I believe, and operating system.
What happened?? It won't charge or turn on. Is there any chance I can revive this or is it toast?

Hi, I am having the same exact problem! Anyone who know what to do?

  • Macbook pro turns it self off, wont charge battery, often wont boot.

Around June, after a couple months of light issues, my macbook pro basically just stopped turning on. I initially thought it was the video card, and since it was one of the earlier core 2 duo models, didnt think it was worth fixing. Just recently I happened to get the torx screwdriver needed to fully open the computer, and after not trying it for a couple of months, it booted up like new. At this time the battery appeared to be charging normally, but again something happened that seemed to coincide with my plugging a usb mouse into the usb port near the magsafe adapter, the light flickered and then it ceased charging. A little while later I was trying to move files off, and it shuts itself off. Then the same problem comes up while trying to boot it, typical noise, and then the apple screen comes up, and the picture is flickering and dims til its off again.
Since then the computer can be used for periods, seemingly doing better after its left off for hours at a time, but only for 30min-1hr max. the battery appears to not be charging at all, and the magsafe light, is either a bright green, or a dim green that has flickers between green and orange. If i press the button on the battery, no lights show up on it at all, and whenever the computer is actually on the batt. monitor says 0%.
The adapter, is in pretty good shape since I replaced it a 18mo ago, so I dont think thats the cause, the battery itself had very little life when it was running before dying in june, but Im not sure how a defective/dead battery could cause any of the other problems. I tried to reset the settings by removing adapter+batt. and holding power for 5 sec, but i dont see any effect.
Im clueless about troubleshooting macbook pros and laptops in general, though i would honestly think that the issue is basically due to the laptop not being able to be powered correctly, but after that I am lost.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi W, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try removing the battery and booting.

  • Why does my macbook pro keep shutting down with a charged battery

Why does my Mac book pro keep shutting down? I lose everything I am working on when it shuts down  help

    kva,
which model MacBook Pro do you have? Is it running Mac OS X 10.5.5? If not, which version of OS X is currently installed on it?
Are you running on battery when it shuts down, or are you running on AC when it shuts down, or does it happen in either case? Which app are you working in when it shuts down? Does it happen only in that app, or does it happen no matter which app you’re working in?

  • Macbook pro power cord frayed and not charging

Ive just noticed I have the same power cord problem. I plugged in the cord into my macbook and noticed that the light did not turn on. Upon closer inspection I noticed the wire was frayed and was real hot. I have not moved my power adapter or have had something happen for it to be that bad. Im not sure if Im still under my 1 year warranty plan thing, but I was wondering if I took it into the apple store they would still replace it. So if anyone has been in this situation and knows the best option, besides spending the 80 bucks for a new one I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hope you feel better.
I assume the OP bought it there and can certainly go back under the 1 year and show them another melted one as there have been enough melted ones for them to know this is a bit of a problem. He can call Applecare as well of course.

  • Macbook pro 2011 late md322 will not charge

    Helppp !!!
    What should I do?
I bought this mac 20 days ago

Hi, my friend had this happen. It turned out to be a hardware fault, whereby the sensor that detetcs that the lid is closed had died.
Fron what the AASP, who fixed the issue, advised it is quite common place and only repairable by an AASP.
If you are under Applecare, you can make a claim. Alternatively, contact your local AASP and have the machine evaluated, and the repair quoted.
    Good luck.

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding your Shift key down when booting. Also, try holding the eject key down when booting to eject the DVD. If you plug a mouse in and hold the clicker down when booting, that should eject the DVD.

  • Mag safe adapter for macbook pro 15 inch mid 2009 model

is it safe to  use a 60 watts mag safe adapter for my macbook pro 15 inch mid 2009 model. i went to istore to have a battery replacement and they advice me to change my 60 watts mag safe to 85 watts because it is not compatible.....

    use the 85w charger.
"Power adapters for Intel-based Apple notebooks are available in 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
For instance If you have a MacBook (13-inch Late 2009) that normally uses a 60W adapter, you can also use an 85W adapter with that computer. You would not use a 45W adapter with that computer; it would not provide enough power for that MacBook. "
