  • Display goes black when in a call

I have noticed an annoying feature with my Nokia N8: The display goes black when in a call (holding the phone to my ear). When the call is finished I have a difficulty to close the call. Is this a Nokia special feature for saving battery that can be turned off or is it an error?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hey Is1987Is! Sorry you are having this problem.
It is normal behaviour for your screen to go black when held near your ear.
Is your screen just not coming back on once you finish your call or take it away from your ear?
Incase it is a bit more of a serious case of your phone having a black screen after hanging up a call. You can try this troubleshoot.
To make sure your proximity sensor is not over sensitive causing your phone to have a black screen, during incoming and outgoing calls aswell as alarms.
First thing is try to verify sunlight/IR oversensitivity with a typical desk lamp.
This could be done by making a phone call (or setting alarm) and putting the phone under the desk lamp when the phone is ringing (or alarm activated).
If phone is oversensitive to IR, display should go blank caused by IR radiation from desk lamp.
If this is the case you should take your phone to your Local Nokia Care Point, and they will be able to fix it for you!
I hope this helps, let me know if your phone goes black screen during an incoming calls when you test it under the lamp!

  • Why is the display going black when editing in FCP X?

Here's a tough one that the Genius Bar couldn't make heads or tails of:
I'm using FCP X to edit some videos, as I have for a few years now. Upon launching Final Cut Pro it loads my timelines etc as it always does, but sometime soon after (either while waiting for background tasks to run, or when click on an event) the screen goes black. I've replicated the same problem with multiple external drives, projects, etc.
And yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCP X following the specific instructions on the Apple.com website. No such luck. Taking it to the Apple Store resulted in a lot of head scratching, confirmation that something is definitely wrong, and a then this Support Forum question.
Anybody heard of something as bizarre as this? I'm hoping so. Thanks.
    My Gear:
    MacBook Pro w Retina Display
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.2
    Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1
multiple external drives (Lacie, WD, etc)

What do you mean by saying the screen is going black?
Do you mean the whole monitor or just the Viewer in FCP X?
Try these general troubleshooting strategies  even if you've already done them.
Use this free app to trash the preferences. This should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
    2. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3. Trash FCP X using this free app and reinstall it.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
If these 3 measures don't work, create a new User Account (Admin) in System Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.

  • Macbook Pro 2013 HDMI Monitor Goes Black for a few seconds

So I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 2013 (specs below) and for the entire time I have been using it with a BenQ RL2455 via HDMI with no problems at all. Recently though I have started to experience problems between the computer and the monitor. There is no particular sequence as to when this will happen but the monitor screen just goes completely black for a couple of seconds, and then goes back to normal.
There is nothing to suggest that the monitor is being disconnected from the mac, as it still detects the fact that the two are still connected. I have followed each cable back to the source and they all seem to be properly connected.
As you can imagine, this is very annoying and inconvenient, and it would be much appreciated if anyone knows any solutions to this. I just thought i'd see if there was anything i could do before i contacted apple, just incase i was being a total idiot and missing something obvious!
    Thanks!
    Specs:
    Macbook Pro Retina 2013
    2.6GHz Intel Core i7
    16GB Ram
    1TB SSD

15" or 13"? How long have to had it?
I've noticed my HDMI monitor comes up blank on reboot sometimes. Using a late 2013 MBP Retina 13" for a couple of days now.

  • Macbook (white, circa 2008) display goes black

Just recently, the screen on my white Macbook circa 2008 suddenly goes black.  I can see a dark image with ambient light but no key or key combination helps.  I have discovered that when the screen in blackened out, if I tilt the screen either backward or forward, the screen comes back on.  I have shut down and restarted but the screen remains black on startup.  I have reset PRAM / NVRAM with no success.  I thoought it might be related to heat but it has now happened when the machine is cold.  I have turned off the automatic display dimming option in both battery and power modes.  I replaced the hard disk because the old one failed but that was quite a while ago and the machine worked fine after.  I am using Snow Leopard v10.6.8 with all available updates installed.  I have resisted resetting SMC because that seem drastic to me.  Does anyone know what could be going wrong and/or have a solution for me?  Thanks much in advance.

Those symptoms point towards a bad inverter cable. The cable routes through the left hinge and over time closing and opening the screen can cause it to fail. See here http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Inverter+Cable/4772/1

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Model very sluggish when trying to carry out "demanding" tasks.

    Hello,
I've had my MacBook Pro for almost three years now, I purchased it in August of 2010 and I have never had any problems with it until recently. First, the disk drive went out on me, it will read very low capacity disks such as photo disks or DVDs but when I try to pop in a game disk or burn anything, it makes this really loud noise and freezes up. I've already had this problem looked at, and I will be sending it to Apple to be repaired in the next month or so.
However, recently, a new problem has occured. Whenever I open an app, especially Safari, if I try to carry out "demanding" tasks (i.e. watch videos on YouTube, get on Facebook, listen to music from Pandora) it freezes and the only solution is to shut the computer down (by pressing and holding the power button, which I know is unhealthy for the computer) and turn it back on. Control+Option+Esc doesn't work anymore when this problem occurs and it doesn't just freeze the app in question, it freezes the entire computer. My GeekSquad and AppleCare over-the-phone-support options are both expired, as I haven't had any reason to renew them, since I haven't had any problems in the past two and a half years.
I have tried every solution that has been said on the web. I've cleaned all the chaches, I've reset the SMC, I tried to reset the PRAM but I didn't get the expected results, I've reset Safari, I've run virus scans, I've deleted unecessary items, I've done disk repairs, I've run all the great utility apps such as OnyX and Memory Clean, I have done everything that has been suggested with no results.
The only thing I can attribute this to is the recent addition of Virtual DJ Pro to my computer. My boyfriend and I use this computer for many purposes, such as making music, making videos, photo editing, writing, surfing the web, but mostly used for school. It used to be used for playing Sims 3, but since the disk drive has stopped working, I have removed the program from the computer completely.
I have read that Macs usually slow down after about 80% of their memory capcity is reached. I'm worried that this is the problem, but why would it only affect Safari? iMovie and iPhoto occasionally freeze, but they have had this problem since I've had the computer. This computer is running with a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core i5 processor with OS X 10.8.3 software and 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3 memory. I plan on buying an external hard drive soon and backing up using Time Machine, as I have never done this before and I fear that this problem may affect all of my documents.
I'm still covered by the in-store GeekSquad, but it's a twenty minute drive and the last time I took it in for the disk drive check-up, they basically said "Sorry, take it to Apple" and the nearest Apple store is three hours away in Kansas City, MO.
I put this question under "Internet and Networking" as the thing mostly affected by this problem is Safari. My internet connection is not the problem; it performs fine on the desktop, iPad, and iPhone 5. I am at my wits end here, and if anyone could offer a simple solution, I would be more than grateful. Thank you for your time in reading and taking time to respond to my question.

In the Replacement Program Support Article, it states:
Apple will service affected 15-inch MacBook Pro computers free of charge until three years from date of purchase. This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
According to these terms, you are outside the eligibility window. However, I still second andyBall_uk's sentiments.
Make a Genius Bar Reservation. Print out a copy of the kernel panic report and the Support Article. If the 'Genius' refuses servicing without cost, ask for the store manager. It is ultimately at the manager's discretion.
Additionally, if this doesn't work out, you can look into Apple's flat fee repair program:
Do You Know About Apple's Flat Rate Repair Pricing?
    Best of luck.

  • My MacBook Pro (mid 2010) has cursor problems when the fan comes on.

Hi, I have been trying a variety of recommendations to see why my MacBook Pro seems to be having slowness issues.  yes, I took it in to the Mac store and they found nothing.  I have tried some other things that I think may have helped but now I see that specifically the cursor goes crazy when the fan kicks in and when the fan goes off it is okay again.  I have run SMART Utility & I didn't see anything from that.

The fans coming on and the cursor going crazy are a correlation, not a cause-and-effect.
The fans come on when measured temperatures inside your computer are getting too high. The fans come on to try to exhaust the excess heat. If the cursor goes crazy at the same time, this is likely to also be caused by the computer getting too hot, not by the fans.
    This is one possible cause:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • Mac Pro display going blank when opening Pages.

    I have a Early 2008 MacPro 3,1, 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM / MAC OS X LION Version 10.7.4
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB.
When I open Pages, the screen goes black with horizontally moving thin white stripes - Then the desktop appears again for a second, then it goes black again. This happen on and off for about 5 minutes and then goes away. It also goes away when I close Pages, if I can do that quickly when the screen appears again for a second. I have Pages '09 Version 4.0.3 (766). This has also happened since the first year I bought the computer. Apple said it may have been the cable - Their phone support was never able to fix it. I just recently found this was related to Pages. Please help if you can.

    Try doing an SMC reset.
If your Macbook has a removable battery remove it and disconnect the Magsafe power adapter. Now hold the power button on for about 5 seconds. Then put the battery back in, attach the power adapter and power it back on and see if the problem goes away.
If your battery is NOT removable, to do an SMC reset hold down the Command + Option + Shift + Power buttons all at the same time. You won't get any indication that anything has happened but this also resets the SMC on those systems that don't have a removable battery.
    Hope this helps!

If you just got it and this is the first time you have turned it on the solution is very simple.
Take it back to where you bought it and exchange it for one that works. Don't bother calling Apple. Take it back.

  • Issue with Macbook Pro (early 2011) screen going black.

I installed an SSD with Mt Lion.  Periodically the screen goes black like it's going to sleep.  It hasn't done this in the past just noticed it the last few weeks.
The SSD is a Crucial with 8GB of Crucial memory.  I've got all the software fixes up to date.  Has anyone else seen this.  I've read a few postings, one mentioned issues with Mt. Lion and another with a logic board in the laptop.

Well, seem like there's already ton of thread related to this issue ...

After I head to shut off my macbook pro without being able to close the programmes, my account-page tells me this is the "Macbook pro van Piet" with the extra notification (2). Can somebody tells me what ths means.
    Thank you, Piet

    Thank you, Niel,
I was able to solve this little problem with your answer. At first I was afraid it was related to a virus, because I had to turn of the computer because an add blocked the closure of Safari.
