MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2GHz) 2007 wont start up

Hi all.
I have just got in to work and powered on my mac book pro to nothing. I have nothing on the dispay or any sounds except the dvd drive doing its annoying eject load thing it always does.
I have checked to see if a DVI monitor plugged in displays anything, it doesnt. I have taken the HD out and tried that, its fine. All i get from the MacBook pro is the dvd drive noise and the little light by the release button.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could this be the main board?

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I have taken the HD out and tried that, its fine.
What do you mean? Do you mean that you tried the HDD in an enclosure and it works? Or do you mean that the computer starts up without the HDD installed?
Have you tried booting from the install disk or the Apple Hardware Test disk? If you have what results have you had?

You're welcome, j. If not enough free space availabe is the issue, now is a good time to upgrade to a much larger HD, as prices have never been better. Clear, illustrated directions are available at ifixit.com, macsales.com, powerbookmedic.com, youtube and others. Macsales, amazon and newegg have a nice selection of HDs, while the latter two also have lots of user reviews.
Given that your MBP is 4-5 years old, and the average life-span of a HD is 3-5 years . . . .
Given that you have a 17" MBP, you can install any capacity HD currently available, just make sure it's 2.5", SATA, and 12.5mm high or less (there's at least one Seagate monster out there that's 14-15mm high). All other things being equal, a 5400RPM HD is going to use less battery power, run cooler, quieter, and with less vibration, and, of course, run a bit slower than a 7200. An SSD is also a possibility (a very expensive one), but you're not going to see anywhere near the speed bump as newer machines due to the SATA 1 (1.5Gbps) SATA/HD bus bottelneck.

Just did a software update, and all that my Macbook Pro does is just beep. Does anyone have any solutions?

It was a list of about five updates, but the one that stands out is the Lion OS X complete update - I think.

  • Macbook pro 13 inch vs iMac 21,5 inch (again ^^)

    Hello everyone,
First thanks in advance for replying!
    My situation:
Have an old iMac 17inch core 2 duo 2GHz with 1GB of RAM.
I don't have a laptop but i would like to have the portability of one, but it itsn't a necessty for the work i wanna do. (i can find a way around it all if need be)
What i do on my mac:
Most of the time i use my mac for web browsing, watching youtube video's, movies, TV shows, and social media, and as a hobby i'm into photography.
Currently i'm using iphoto to edit my photo's and while i find it good and practical i want to do a little more than what iphoto can do. I want to start using aperture for editing. Now remember it's as a hobby it's nothing hardcore just basic editing (black and white, saturation, adjusting colour and stuff).
So i'm going to buy myself a new Mac because this one is getting real slow when editing, even in iphoto. (takes like 5minuts to save the edited photo is way to long) Now i know i can upgrade the RAM for not much money but i want a new machine.
I'm at a dillema. Should i get the macbook pro 13 inch i7 or the imac 21,5 inch same price point?
If i get the macbook pro I would be using it somewhat like this: 90% desktop with external monitor 24inch and 10% portable.
(Like when i'm going on vacantion to edit some photo's or use it as storage for them, sitting downstares not behind my desk, take it a friends house. But all this i can miss if need be)
    Now for the questions
Is the macbook pro 13 inch going to cut it as a desktop computer + monitor while using aperture as the heaviest program ever and multi tasking?
Do i need the graphics card and quad core of the imac for aperture?
    Thanks

Can't use the ipad for my travels
I can't put my RAW photo's from my DSLR onto the ipad to "save them" for later editing.
    Thank for the reply!

  • Is the MacBook Pro 13 inch good enough?

Is the non retina  MacBook Pro 13 core i5 with 4g of ram good enough for nonprofessional  video editing  making apps surfing the web watching videos ? Or can I get a MacBook Air 13 inch ? is these two good  enough for what I want ? And what is the difference between them and the MacBook Pro 13 inch core i7 with 8g of ram ? Is it a big difference between them ? Which one of these three you advice me to go with ?

That will work fine. I would eventually stick 8G of RAM in it though. I have 8G in mine and have run low and started paging out already. Safari and Flash are big RAM hogs.

I wouldn't even consider a laptop. I upgraded from an iMac 17 to a 24 over three years ago and now it seems small c/w the 27.
I use my old 17 when I go on the road as it goes into a padded bag along with the keyboard and mouse and only takes minutes to set up.
You'll get far more bang for your buck with a desktop and it will last you a lot longer. MacBooks are famous for hard drive failure and I wouldn't bother with one until they are fitted with flash drives as standard.
Me, I'm waiting for a 17 inch Airbook to appear.

  • How can I connect my Early 2011" Macbook Pro 13" inch, with a generic Mini Display Port to HDMI connector, to a LG 32LD340 LCD TV, using Mountain Lion 10.8.2?

I have an Early 2011" macbook pro 13 inch (core i5 2.3ghz 4gb ram 320hdd) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I want to connect it via Mini DP to HDMI connector, and a HDMI cable to a LCD TV LG 32LD340. When I had Lion OS, I had no problems at all.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

My MacBook Pro 15-inch with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors just failed. Do you guys know if apple still fixes them?

I tried last week. The best I could get was a discount on the repair, but the damage to my logic board by the GPU caused it to no longer boot. The program ended in December last year, but it has been extended in the past.
If you have no other damage you might be able to get a flat rate tier 1 repair if you are in the USA.

  • Macbook pro 15 inch wifi problem (late 2011)

    Hello,
Here I write a little desperate with this problem that I have on the MacBook Pro (late 2011) with WIFI .
For several months ago, when I power on the MBP is all apparently normal , spend a few minutes and I lose the WIFI , the icon still comes out as "connected " but no WIRELESS signal , I turned off the WIFI, but, when I try to change back to turn ON, the icon of WIFI still OFF ( the inverted triangle ) . Restarting the MBP and still the problem no signal and appears as disabled , delete PRAM several times until finally everything works again , spend some time and again the same thing sometimes is fine for several hours, go out to eat and return and again the same thing, the worst was when I saw the message "Hardware not found" and "X " where the icon goes WIFI . I rebooted several times and not managed , this was the "hardware not found" message. Some time ago I went something like , when Lion had and read that resetting the PRAM and managed , never came out , but now even that it manages , and it is becoming more common , I thought it was the OS ( MacOSX Mavericks ) so I reinstalled (I'm not used Time Machine, I install all again ), this work the lasted several days without fail, until she passed again, I'm out of WiFi, when I see no WIFI signal in the list , restart me WIFI goes off and I can not change , restart it goes back to " hardware not found" and so on.
Now desperate for this, I opened the MBP , disconnected the cables from the Airport card and reconnected with care and making sure you are all well , turned on the MBP again and works!!, I lasted two weeks , then I thought it was that. But again the whole problem again.
Already investigating more online and I found some details from other users
1 / Both WIFI and Bluetooth are on the same card ( the q disconnected and reconnected )
2 / If the card was wrong , losing the WIFI Bluetooth should lose , but I tried Bluetooth and has no problems
3 / Reported that resetting PRAM or SMC but still, in my case, does not work.
Now all I have left to rule is the WIFI antenna that is located ( if I remember correctly ) for the bottom of the screen, and according to several users this tends to fail from constant use to close or open the MBP (or either to cover or uncover ) , and sometimes it just heats and heats close to this area .
Has anyone had a similar problem? My MBP turns 2 only on March 7, 2014 , I can not believe all that cost me and now is about to fail , I have a Sony VAIO Core 2 Duo for about 5 years (or more) ago and is still running and has been dropped many times and nothing has ever happened : (
Additional data on my MBP ,
Several months ago ( long before the problem with the WIFI) I changed the hard drive for an SSD ( 250GB Corsair Neutron X ) .
There is a problem that often makes me too, is that when you close the MBP ( to open ) , and open it back again ( out of sleep) the following happens :
1 / It instantly freezes when waking from sleep and I have a long wait to enter the password.
2 / When you leave idle normal let me put the password, but just when giving ENTER freezes
3 / Out of sleep, let me put the key, ENTER and when I load the desktop freezes
    Another problem :
This only happened to me a few times , as I mentioned , my MBP is formatted ( have Mavericks ) before formatted (clean install without time machine) , I closed the MBP ( I sent to sleep) and the open the screen was black , but as with bright, and not leave the state, turned off force ( pressing the button) , start the MBP again (power on) charged normal gray screen with apple but with a fairly low brightness, spent a few seconds and turned the brightness to normal and started normally .
I hope some can help me with these problems.
PD : I'm from Peru , if anyone knows a trusted service that please let me know .
    Thank you very much .

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

I recommend you to run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509 It's possible that something is damaged, and Apple Hardware Test will help you finding it. Make sure you tick the option to run an extended test, and connect your Mac to the charger.
If your Mac came with DVDs, you have to insert the Mac OS X DVD to run Apple Hardware Test. As you haven't got the SuperDrive, you will have to buy an external optical drive

I want to known how to install windows 7 on Old Macbook 15'inch 2.3 Core 2 Duo by using usb
I try many time, but after restart bootcamp partition, apple show blinking folder error
I think this firmware not support to install windows by usb
    NOTE:
I Cannot install Apple New OSX Mountain Lion, Mavericks etc in this MAC
If I cannot install windows 7 on this MAC, so tell me what I will do with this MAC  ?

I agree with the optical drive, mine acted strange, and i thought people were crazy and my drive was shot, but a simple cleaning disc worked miracles.
But- are you trying to reboot with both the USB install and the DVD install both plugged in?  that would definitely cause confusion.
Do this, reboot with NOTHING plugged in.  Once you hear the Mac chime, immediately press and hold option.
You should only see the Mac HD, and Recovery Partition.
THEN plug in your external DVD, and wait a min or two, you should see a disc icon appear next to the recovery partition that says something like windows.  If that doesnt appear after a min or two, unplug it and put the USB stick and do the same thing.  I had to do it this way on my mid 09 MBP.
Let me know if this works to start the install.  If not we may have to start over with Bootcamp Assistant

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:
