MacBook Pro 15-inch mid-2012 model or 15-inch retina display?

Hi!
I've decided to buy a 2012-model 15-inch MacBook pro.
1. I'd like to know which one would be a better choice- MacBook pro regular model or the retina display one?
2. The retina display model does not have any Ethernet port. Can I use a third-party USB 2 to Ethernet adapter? Will it work?
3. I don't live in the US or canada. My city has an apple premium reseller. If I buy the notebook from the reseller, will I be able to upgrade to mountain lion free of cost? I ask this because some dudes have told me that I may not be able to upgrade gratis.
I'd highly appreciate your opinions and suggestions. Thanks in anticipation

I get confused a bit by this "you can't upgrade it arguement so buy a model that you can upgrade". Seriously, how many people do you think pull old parts out of a notebook (as a percentage of total sales) and replace then with higher capacity or more memory parts? I doubt it is even 1%, yet many who write here are concerned that they'll get "stuck" with the technology they bought.
My 5 year old Core 2 Duo recently had a system board failure. It wasn't covered by the extended warranty so I had the HDD removed and ordered a new computer. I doubt it made sense to put a new system board in when the rest of the computer (HDD, RAM, Display, processor) could all be next (remember they are all 5 years old too).
They way I deal with the obsolecence issue is to buy a bit more power, storage and memory than I need today and keep the same computer for the 4 - 5 year period I'll use it. After that, Apple doesn't have parts for it anyway.
So, on my last notebook, I had 120 GB of storage (it is about 1/3 ful), 8GB of ram and a 2.3 Core 2 Duo processor. For what I do, it had plenty of performance. My new order is a 2.6/16MB/256SSD model. More than I need today and about right for what I'll need tomorrow. I could have saved $600.00 by buying the base non retina model, but to upgrade a new MBP from the base specification to what I've ordered (aftermarket stuff) would likely be more than $600.00. So what would be the point?
My advice, spec what you think you'll need over the life of your new computer and buy it. If it needs a repair, unless you are an expert or someone who doesn't mind the risk of a self repair, you'll be happier and will have less hassle.

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:

I'm trying to get my internal mic to work after my recent install on a MacBook Pro 9,2 (mid-2012), but without much success.  I've installed alsa, alsa-utils, alsa-plugins, etc., and audio output works fine, but the internal microphone still doesn't work.  In alsamixer (after F5 to see all), I see Master, Headphone, Speaker, Bass Speaker, PCM, Mic Boost, Mic Boost, S/PDIF, S/PDIF Default PCM, S/PDIF 1, S/PDIF 2, S/PDIF 16, Capture, Auto-Mute Mode, and Digital.  All are unmuted and turned up, and Auto-Mute Mode is set to disabled.

    I have a macbook pro core i7 mid 2012
And update to the latest version 10.8.4 system after updating the system I have the problem appeared to take off the device and stops at the apple logo for about 5 minutes and then enters the desktop How can I solve this problem and thank you

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 SSD Dual Drive Installation , i need to install ssd or hdd without removing my optical drive?

    salam 3lykum,
my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 need to install SSD Dual Drive in the enclosure in the laptop, but without removing my optical drive? can one help me. and without cable sata to usb to use it external.

I only know of one 2 terabyte drive that will fit in a notebook - and it comes in an enclosure that you must disassemble to get to the drive -> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=110YIC0GU53A7&coliid=I38PEBUNYX6OUM&psc=1.
HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

No. Macs that came standard installed with Lion or later don't come with media, and, indeed, some don't even come with DVD drives to run media in.
...What if some problems will occur regarding the OS? How can I fix it?...
Such Macs come with a hidden recovery partition. You can boot from that and restore the OS if that's what's needed, or run Disk Utility to repair the HD. Check out http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 for details.

  • What Mac mini has equivalent power (hardware wise) to a Macbook Pro i7 Core mid-2012 non retina laptop?

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I am interested to know which Mac mini has the power equivalence to a MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.9GHz 13" Mid-2012' non retina's Specs?
    Macbook Pro Specs here:

My 2012 Macbook Pro was sadly stolen from my university's dorm room at UCLA. I am now looking again to buy another Apple Mac product. I specifically would like to buy a Mac Mini, since I believe it will fit my needs.
Any comments are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Given they all run at closely similar clock times I would expect similar or relatively close performance from either the i7 MBPs and i7 upgraded Minis from the same production periods. They both have similar hardware and similar CPUs. The upper-end MBPs, however, may have better GPUs - something you should check. Minis all use integrated graphics. MBPs of 2012 and on are all Retina models except for one 2012 MBP model. All 13" models use integrated graphics only. The 15" models all have an additional discrete GPU.

    You can't.
    About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

  • Macbook Pro 13 In. Mid 2012 Repair?

    Hello,
I purchased my Macbook Pro Mid 2012 in July of 2012. Over the years my Mac has somehow sustained some damage including, Dent on casing of screen, hinge cracking, and moderate scratching around the casing. I honestly cannot pin point how all of these damages happened. I know that the hinge's cracking is from constant use because I take very good care of my mac. I guess my question would be, how much would it cost to send my Mac to apple for repairs?
    Thanks!

    Try SMC and NVRAM resets:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
    Then try a safe boot:

    Any change?
You may also consider installing additional RAM.  Yosemite will run more efficiently with 8 GB or more.

  • Anyone else have this problem recently on Macbook Pro or Air Mid 2012 and later ?

My iTunes 11.0.2.26 Is becoming unresponsive lately on my 15" Mid 2012 Macbook Pro ?? Suggestions ? Anybody else deal with this ? By the way i bought this laptop 2 weeks ago brand new and by the way i have 20,000 songs on it though is that the problem ? I have 367 GB free out of 500GB on my Macintosh HDD harddrive ???

The new Mac's came with OS X Lion 10.7 and there are no boot disks.
Since it's so new, take it back to the Apple Store and let them deal with it.
If not you can hold Command and r (as in rotten) keys down and boot the computer.
You'll be presented with a several options, including one to reinstall OS X Lion provided you have a Apple ID, which means you have to use Safari in there to set one up. To do that you need to set up a email account with Google or Yahoo. Once you get the ID, then you can download Lion and reinstall it.
It's so stupid not having a copy of the OS on hand to perform your own repairs.
Of course Apple will be happy to sell you a $69 Lion USB stick.
Like I said, take it back to the store, and try to get your money back, that will force them to think about just giving you a replacement machine that works.
Lion doesn't work really but it can be acceptable until the patches get released.

I presumed from your original post that you had to fork out another $3000 for a temporary replacement, and be without your original for 1 week, then have to return the temporary one. Not to mention all the postage etc.  Now, just presuming that you would be happy to pay $200 to have it fixed without all that hassle. Obviously your not satisfied with the current option otherwise you wouldn't have posted the thread to begin with.

I purchased this internal disk. I need to know if this will be compatible. Only then I would know if its Okay to use or should I exchange it. I need you guys to tell me.. Thanks for your help :-)

An SSD replaces your hard drive. Unfortunately they are kind of small in comparison, so you may need to stick with a hard drive. A SSD uses flash memory like a USB drive, except in place of your hard drive. The speed increase is phenominal. This will replace your drive so you will need to reload OS X which is easy thanks to Internet Recovery.

  • MacBook Pro 13" unibody mid 2012 power button not working!

My macBook won't start (or shut off) by pressing power button. It does however start if I connect maglock, I've troubleshooted and am all out of ideas.

Is it under Applecare? If so, just take it in and let them fix it for you. The only other thing I can think to try is an SMC reset, though I don't hold much hope for that as a fix. Use the option "for a battery you should not remove yourself"
