Macbook pro 15 inch, non-retina, 2.3 ghz or 2.6?

I am looking to buy a macbook pro for college and i dont know if i should get 2.3 ghz or 2.6 ghz. Yes the 2.6 has 250 more gb hard drive and 4 gb more ram but i can upgrade it to 8gb and 750 hard drive and if i do that and add apple care it is cheaper then buying the 2.6 ghz with apple care. So my quesion is will .3 ghz really make a difference?

Not immediately, for the average user. In about 5 years, when software needs more processor horsepower its nice to have that extra .3Ghz. It means the useful lifespan of your computer might be extended an extra year, to extend past trends into the future. Although predicting software trends is probably unwise.
You also get a better resale value out of a faster processor. If you planon doing processor intensive work like video editing then you should get the fast processor in any case. Ald lastly, if you have the extra money you should do it just on principle.

  • Internal drive for Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina display from late 2013?

Hi everyone. After some water spillage to my new computer, the guys at the Apple Store have told me that my internal hard drive needs to be replaced. No other damage was done, thankfully. I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina Display from late 2013. The Apple genius said my current hard drive has flash storage, and that my new hard drive will need that as well as the computer requires it. Does anyone know where I can buy such a hard drive? Is it possible to buy it from Apple? I am happy to buy online or in a store (I live in Australia). Also, is this Mac Pro model difficult to take apart? I'd like to install the hard drive myself.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

    From the specs:
    STORAGE AND MEDIA
    Storage
256, 512 GB, or 1 TB flash storage
    Media
    Optional Apple USB SuperDrive

  • My Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display crashes sometimes when connected to an external monitor

My almost-new Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display goes black and shuts down sometimes when connected to my external monitor. (The first time it did this was when connected to a projector.) They have replaced the motherboard but it still happens sometimes. The computer and monitor both come back on after a few seconds.

  • HT204384 SD Card will not mount on Macbook Pro Mid 2012 (non-retina), tried everything

I am trying to use a PNY 4GB SD Card on my Macbook Pro Mid-2012 (non-retina), but I cannot get it to mount or for the Macbook to even see it's there.  I read some people had success slightly pulling it out, pushing it in faster, cleaning the port, etc. which I have tried all of these, but to no avail.
    Anybody have an idea?
    Thanks,
    -Justin B.

Had problems reading SD cards after a Mountain Lion update. Try this XQuartz solution that fixed this for me. I'm using a 13" MBP mid-2012. All you have to do is install this programme and re-insert your SD card.
XQuartz no longer comes with new Macbooks, only X11.
See this support page from Apple on where you can download XQuartz.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5293?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
You can download Xquartz directly from here:
    http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/
This should be the most up to date version. If not check for updates once you have downloaded it.
Simply re-insert your SD card and voila!

  • MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display and SSD upgrade?

Looking to upgrade to a SSD in my MacBook Pro (summer 2012) non-retina display. Are there ones that work better in a MacBook Pro?

In theory at least, any SSD will work fine. There are some additional considerations to make, however. It mostly revolves around updating the drive's firmware. Many SSD companies do not offer Mac-friendly ways to perform this procedure. From the list Clinton provided, you can drop Corsair and Samsung immediately for this reason.
I would not consider OWC, Intel, or any SSD that uses a Sandforce chipset because of spotty reliability. Yes, improvements have been made, but I still do not trust them. Of the dozens of SSDs I've owned and deployed over the last 2-3 years, the only ones to need replacement were ones with Sandforce.
That leaves Crucial, Plextor, and OCZ. The former two basically use the same Marvell chipset. While I can't speak for Plextor, Crucial's firmware updates are OS agnostic. You simply down an .iso file, burn it to CD, boot from that disc, and perform the update. It works perfectly on a Mac. Doing a quick check of Plextor's support site, it seems the proedure is the same.
For OCZ, I'm only focusing on the Vector and Vertex 4. The former is brand new, having just hit the market within the last couple weeks. If you're looking to buy right now, I would stick with the Vertex 4 as it's a more proven commodity. OCZ has created a suite of tools that you copy to a USB flash drive. You can boot from it, and it takes you to what I think is a very heavily modified Linux distribution. From there, you can do a firmware update, check drive health, and perform a SATA secure erase to return the drive to its "out of the box" state. To get the most from the tools, you should have a USB mouse plugged in. Also, firmware updates require the use of a hard-wired Ethernet cable; you can't use wireless.
Bottom line - for an SSD upgrade, stick with Crucial, Plextor, or OCZ as they are the most Mac-friendly (aside from original Apple parts, of course).

When you order a MBP you can have it delivered at any Apple retail store.  When you get the e-mail that the MBP is ready to be picked up, you have options to enter in the rersponse if you or someone else will pick it up.  You will have to fill in some required information that will identify that person to the store personnel.
I had my last MBP delivered to the local store, but I picked it up.
    Ciao.

If you are on Yosemite, and have a CoreStorage volume (the default), it is not visible on the Windows side. The Apple HFS driver cannot read CS volumes.
You can verify this by running the following command in OSX Terminal.
    diskutil cs list
If you get any output, such volumes will not be visible.
As a work around, if you really need it, check the 'Revertible' value. If it is yes, you can revert it to HFS+ by using the following command
    diskutil cs revert
Here is the syntax for the command. The LVUUID parameter can be seen as a long string for your Logical Volume. Do not use the Logical Volume Group or any disk UUIDs. If you need the exact command, please post the output from the diskutil cs list command?
    diskutil cs revert
    Usage:  diskutil coreStorage revert
            MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode|lvUUID
[-stdinpassphrase | -passphrase [passphrase] | -recoverykeychain file]
Convert a CoreStorage logical volume back to its native type.
The file system must be mounted and resizable (i.e. Journaled HFS+).
Ownership of the affected disk and a passphrase (if encrypted) is required.

  • Macbook Pro 13 inch with Retina vs Macbook Air 13 inch

Hi everyone, I just have a few questions regarding the two Macbooks listed above, here is my situation:
I am going to be a Freshman in college next year and have decided to purchase my first Macbook. I am familiar with most Apple products but Macbooks are the one area I do not have experience in. I have done some research and have widdled my decision down to either the Air or the rMBP. I am looking at the entry level of these laptops, so both would be equipped with the regular 128gb SSD drives and the 1.8GHz and 2.5GHz proccessors. My budget would not be more than the cost of the rMBP, so upgrading to anything more than $1,399 is not really an option.
    My uses:
    Basic Word processing
    Web surfing
    Video streaming
Music and picture storage (nothing more than 10 gigs)
Video and Picture editing with the Adobe Suite (this is my biggest concern, how will both computers react to the software? Which would handle it better?)
Now I know everyone has seen posts like this before but the difference is with the recent update in pricing. Now that the rMBP is $1,499 (with a $100 discount for education it will be $1,399) is it a better deal? Is the performance and retina display worth an extra $200? I have read rumors that the retina display causes some slow down in operation for the rMBP.
Lastly, if I decided to purchase the Air, should I invest in the upgrade to the 256gb SSD or maybe purchase a cheaper USB 3.0 external hardrive?
Thank you for your time and consideration, it is really appreciated!
    Cameron

Here's my take on that one.
Skip the 13 Inch Macbook Retina until it's been in refreshed a couple more times to get rid of the screen issues some people are having - I was one of the first ones that bought the 15 Inch Macbook Retina - after 2 months of use - got rid of it because of issues with Photoshop and Office - i'm sure an update was already released by Adobe and Microsoft to support Retina display by now.
In any event - the Macbook Air is a good idea - but instead of going with just the 256GB Flash Storage - why not do the 8GB of RAM and 256GB Flash Storage?
Or you can get the 13 Inch non Retina Macbook Pro so you can upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive at your own convenience.
in any event - best thing to do is go to your local Apple Store and compare the two and see what feels right for you.

  • Macbook pro 15 inch non user upgradeable now

Why did apple stop selling 15 inch Macbook Pro that is non user upgradeable concerning memory and hard drive size ?

Because they did. They want everyone to use a large phone/pad with attached keyboard and separate screen.

  • Critirias to choose a macbook pro 13 inch (no retina display)

my family decided to buy me a mac. i am a teenager and i liked the mac pro 13 inch (no retina display). But i am wondering if mac pro is good enough for usual personal uses (no professional). is that mac good at games (ex SIMS)? are 13 inch ok or its too small? thanks in advance

Buy extra RAM from a reputable Mac-friendly store with a lifetime exchange warranty like Crucial.com, macsales.com, etc. I've been getting mine from macsales.com for years.
For gaming, the 13" might not be the best solution. I am not a gamer, but games today tend to want a nice graphics card. The problem with the 13" is that the graphics (Intel HD Graphics 4000) are integrated with the CPU, not a separate graphics card, and also use up some of the system RAM because integrated graphics do not have their own memory. Check the graphics card requirements on all the games you want to play, and get feedback from online gaming forums as to how well the 13" Intel HD Graphics 4000 performs for the games you want to play. (The 15" MacBook Pro also has an a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M dedicated graphics card with 512MB or 1GB of its own graphics memory, and most gamers would vastly prefer this.)
If you exclude gaming, the 13" is definitely more than good enough for personal uses. It's also appropriate for some professional uses.

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris

  • OS X 10.8.2 and Macbook Pro 13 inch with retina display...

I bought a 13 inch macbook pro with retina display 6 days ago and am having issues with updating the OS to OS X 10.8.2. I have downloaded the update and when I attempt to install it flashes up this message " OS X update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I have spoken to the guys at the apple store where I bought it and they said that it was an software corruption and exchanged the machine. However the new machine is still having the same problem so I discussed it with them once more. Now they say there is no update and I have to wait for it to be released. I am confused because the display 13 inch macbook pro with retina displays have the software, OS X 10.8.2, installed. How is that? Anyone know what the **** the truth is and how I remedy my current problems?
    Kindest regards

I just tested it and this is what I got on my 2012 MBP:
As this update is from October, it is the regular update for machines prior to mid/late (?) 2012's. We are supposed to test solutions before posting them; in any case, this will not work on 2012's.

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 non retina goes ramdomly into sleep mode

    Hello people,
I bought a macbook pro non retina mid 2012 and everything was going fine until I installed Mountain Lion OS X. From this moment, my macbook is going into a random sleep mode. It is important to notice, that I cannot see any pattern, it can happens even when I am typing something and when it happens the screen goes black suddenly and it takes some seconds to return. When I was living in Germany last year, I called apple support two times. I installed the mountain lion update the first time as they recommended and the second time I reseted the SMC settings. They said to me that if it didn't work, I should reinstall the operational system before going to an apple store. Thing is that in the meantime I returned to my home country Brazil, where we still don't have a physical apple store and unfortunately the problem was not solved when I reinstalled the operational system. I don't know what to do next. I am afraid that since there is no apple store in Brazil, I just lost the chance to exchange it for a new one... Any suggestion that I didn't try would be welcome.

So, nobody can give me a suggestion? I am disappointed. When I googled for this problem I saw some people facing a similar problem, but their solution they offered didn't help me.

  • As of 2015: Best SSD for 9,2 Macbook Pro (mid-2012 non Retina)

Hi All, this is my first post in the community, so I apologize ahead of time if it is evident in my query.
I currently purchased a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non Retina. Model ID: MacBookPro9,2.(i7, 2.9 GHz)
My question is: as of today (April 2015) what is the best SSD available (around 500GB in size) for my specific laptop? I've searched quite a few communities and just around Google and have found numerous options that people swear by and the same options that people swear against. What's been difficult is a lot of the posts were created much earlier on (which is expected for a MBP from 2012). I have read good (and bad) things about Samsung 840, 850 pro, 850 evo; as well as hearing good things about Crucial's M4, Mx100, Mx200. My preference is to spend approximately $200 for a 500GB unless there is clear evidence that I need to splurge on an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro because the Samsung/Crucial drives will just cause me trouble.
If anyone can lead me to the SSD's that Apple themselves use, I would be much appreciative. As of now, I'm not even sure which Controller they utilize (Marvell?) and if they support TRIM. Any information to shed some light on this would be great as a lot of my knowledge has purely been from the articles I've been reading in the past few days.
I know this question has been asked over and over again; but again, I am asking it to try and find the best SSD as of late.
    Thanks ahead of time!

"I thought the non Retina MBPs were still connected via a SATA connection. "
That is correct and that is why I was recommending that people buy that 2012 MBP non Retina that Apple was selling until just recently. Having the SATA connection while slower than PCIe allowed you more flexibility in purchasing upgraded drives.
"I currently purchased a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Non Retina"
So you bought one of these? Be aware that if you modify the laptop in any way your warranty will be void unless the work is done by an Apple approved tech if Apple becomes aware of it.
That said you could put a 480 SSD from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/
That can be had for $229 currently.
I'd be wary of installing a Samsung in there because of problems like this:
Samsung 850 EVO in Early '11 MBP
A lot of people are running that drive just fine but now and then....
I've installed 6 OWC SSDs in various Macs and have had 0 problems and 0 hassles formatting and installing them.
